Bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC), one of the main curcuminoids, has numerous biological activities. However, the low solubility and stability of BDMC limit its application. In this work, in order to improve the solubility and stability of BDMC, we encapsulated BDMC using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) + Tween 20/Tween 60 mixed surfactants. The molar ratio of CTAB to Tween 20/Tween 60 was optimized by response surface analysis. The thermodynamic parameters (binding constant, enthalpy change, entropy change and Gibbs free energy change) for the interaction of BDMC with CTAB + Tween 20/Tween 60 mixed micelles were obtained by fluorescence spectroscopy and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy. Positive enthalpy change and entropy change indicated that hydrophobic interaction was the main driving force. Moreover, due to the longer alkyl chains of Tween 60, the encapsulation of BDMC by CTAB + Tween 60 mixed micelles was stronger. The encapsulation of BDMC in the hydrophobic alkyl chains by the mixed micelles was determined by fluorescence polarization technology, time-resolved fluorescence assay, and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Solubilization and stability experiments showed that the solubility of BDMC was improved and the alkaline hydrolysis of BDMC was inhibited due to the encapsulation of the mixed micelles. The improvement of the solubility and stability of BDMC was more obvious in CTAB + Tween 60 mixed micelles because of the stronger interaction between them. The above results indicated that CTAB + Tween 20/Tween 60 mixed micelles could be used to encapsulate BDMC to improve its solubility and stability.

Oily wastewater caused by the traditional oil spills and the increment of emerging lipid (such as biodiesel) pollution endangers human and nature seriously. Herein, we conceive a novel β-cyclodextrin-threated interface demulsification structural strategy to assemble superhydrophilic aramid nanofibers (ANFs) membranes for surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsion separation. Aim to modify the monomers, p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) molecules were covered by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to form inclusion compounds. Different poly (p-phthaloyl-p-phenylenediamine) with poly-pseudorotaxane structure (β-CD@PPTA) was obtained by low-temperature solution polycondensation by adjusting the proportion of modified monomers. The corresponding β-CD@ANFs membrane was successfully fabricated by non-solvent induced phase separation. The effect of β-CD@PPD monomers on the structure, element content, surface wettability, separation performances and durability of the modified membrane were investigated systematically. The modified membranes had the superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity characteristics. The flux and oil rejection of membrane both raised with the increased added proportion of β-CD@PPD monomers. The well-designed membrane exhibited tween 60 stabilized N-hexadecane-in-water emulsion permeances over 126.59 ± 5.35 L/m 2 h with separation efficiency above 99.73%. More significantly, the membrane had long-term demulsification performance and ideal purification effect on the separation of biodiesel wastewater, showing forceful prospect in removing lipid oil pollutants from the oil-in-water emulsions. The membrane prepared by poly-pseudorotaxane modification could better serve the development of oil-in-water separation field.

5-flourouracil (5-FU) is typically modulated with leucovorin (LEU) in clinical practice to improve clinical efficacy and patient survival rates. However, this combination has undesirable side effects and makes 5-FU more toxic. Hence, integrating a vesicular system (proniosomes) with another delivery vehicle may improve drug targeting, while resolving the aforementioned drawbacks. This study aimed to engineer 5-FU/LEU proniosomes for possible delivery to the colon. The modified slurry approach was used to create drug-loaded proniosomes (150 mg/9 g of carrier) using both water-soluble (dextrin (DEX) and lactose (LAC)) and insoluble (Neusilin FH 2 (NEU)) carriers. The powdered formulations were filled into Eudragit S100 (10 %)-coated capsules or Eudragit FS 30D capsules for enteric- or colon-specific delivery. In vitro evaluations (flow properties, powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis, particle size analysis, entrapment efficiency, drug release, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), polydispersity index, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and stability studies) were performed on the formulations. An in vitro cytotoxicity test [real-time cell assay (RTCA)] against HCT-116 colon cancer cell lines was performed using the optimized formulation. In vitro evaluations showed that the nanoparticles had good physicochemical properties. RTCA studies showed sustained cell death with the formulations compared to the pure drug and placebo. The sequential drug release of the colon-targeted capsules containing 5-FU and LEU- loaded proniosomes showed negligible drug release in SGF (pH 1.2) and phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.8) (approximately 11 %) but profound drug release (>80 %) at pH 7.4. Drug-loaded proniosomes engineered for colon targeting (Eudragit S100 (10 %) capsules or Eudragit FS 30D capsules) showed good colon-specific targeting and favorable in vitro cytotoxicity profiles.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has demonstrated its potential to enhance depression treatment through various biological pathways. However, the application potential of CBD is significantly impeded by its polymorphic nature, limited water solubility, and hepatic first-pass metabolism. To improve chemical stability and water solubility, nanostructured lipid carriers loaded with CBD (CBD-NLCs) were developed using a hot-melt emulsification method and optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The process parameters were optimized using a four-factor and three-level Box–Behnken experimental design consisting of 29 experiments. The CBD-NLCs were formulated and characterized, demonstrating desirable properties, including a mean particle size of 54.33 nm, a PDI value of 0.118, a zeta potential of −29.7 mV, and an impressive encapsulation efficiency rate of 87.58%. The nanoparticles were found to possess an approximately spherical shape, as revealed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The stability studies have demonstrated that CBD-NLCs effectively mitigated the photodegradation of CBD and exhibited a stable behavior for 42 days when stored. The CBD-NLCs displayed a biphasic release profile characterized by an initial burst release (over 50% of CBD released within 20 min) followed by a subsequent gradual and sustained release, aligned with first-order kinetics and Fickian diffusion. These findings demonstrate the potential suitability of this formulation as a carrier for CBD in food fortification and pharmaceutical applications.

Medium- and long-chain structured lipids (MLSLs) rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were synthesized by acidolysis of fish oil (Omax 1812, a mixture of sardine and anchovy oils) with caprylic acid (CA) using a lipase bio-imprinted with fatty acids as a catalyst. A bio-imprinted lipase for the acidolysis reaction was first prepared under optimal conditions, and its activity was 1.43 times higher than that of the non-bioimprinted. The bio-imprinted lipase was used as a catalyst to produce such MLSLs, and the reaction conditions were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, equilibrium was achieved in 8 h, and the total and the sn -1, 3 CA contents in the obtained product were 28.72% and 42.26%. Additionally, the total and the sn -2 DHA contents were 14.23% and 21.10%, respectively, and the total and the sn -2 EPA contents were 16.43% and 10.14%, respectively. These obtained MLSLs, rich in sn -1, 3 CA, and sn -2 DHA, EPA can deliver significant health benefits.

To achieve effective temperature-regulated modification of spray-bonded cotton for superior thermal management capabilities, a dual-network phase transition microspheres (PCP) was developed through a one-step process using emulsion polymerization. This innovative approach incorporated eutectic polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the phase change component, chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM) as the first network, and ionically cross-linked calcium alginate (CA) as the second network. The PCP, which contains PEG solid-loaded in the dual network, was utilized as a modifier for the post-treatment of spray-bonded cotton using a coating technique. Key findings reveal that the effectively immobilization of PEG has been, without any abserved chemical reactions between PEG and PAM/CA. Additionally, PEG maintained its crystalline properties when combined with PAM/CA. The PCP exhibited a distinct morphology with smooth, spherical particles averaging round 5 μm in diameter. The optimized PCP sample exhibits a melting onset temperature of 37.20 °C, a melting enthalpy of 92.59 J·g −1 , and impressive heat resistance. The resulting temperature-regulated spray-bonded cotton (TRSBC) displayed intelligent temperature control characteristics with a melting onset at 37.65 °C and a latent heat of 32.08 J·g −1 . Compared to untreated spray-bonded cotton (USBC), TRSBC exhibited a notable delay effect in both heating and cooling processes, resulting in a temperature differential of 23.5 °C during heating and 16.3 °C during cooling, underscoring its superior temperature control capabilities. Research indicates that TRSBC possesses significant potential in thermal management applications, encompassing clothing, high-tech textiles, and temperature-regulating sandwich panels, thereby presenting considerable opportunities for commercial ventures. Due to its high porosity, large specific surface area, and strong photothermal conversion performance, graphene aerogel has unique advantages in the field of pollution treatment, especially in the field of recovering highly viscous oils. However, for the treatment of highly viscous oils, the high adsorption capacity and high adsorption rate of graphene aerogel often cannot be combined, which is one of the important reasons limiting its development in this field. A double-step templating strategy for graphene aerogels preparation was used in this work, i.e., Pickering emulsion soft templating and unidirectional freeze casting. Specifically, the dense Pickering emulsion droplets can be stabilized in a short period of time, so that they can be cured quickly. After that, graphene aerogels (DGA-0.8-25) with dual pore structure were prepared by unidirectional freeze casting technology to further form aligned pores based on the pores formed by the Pickering emulsion droplet soft template. The dense presence of Pickering emulsion droplets gives DGA-0.8-25 an ultra-high porosity (96.8 %), which can adsorb 184.53 times its own mass of crude oil. Due to the unidirectional pore structure, the adsorption rate of DGA-0.8-25 on crude oil is as high as 8.39 g·g −1 ·min −1 , which realizes dual improvement of the adsorption capacity and rate of graphene aerogel on crude oil and shows a good application prospect in the treatment of high viscosity crude oil. In addition, DGA-0.8-25 has unique advantages in the field of oil–water separation, with a separation efficiency of 99.04 % for water-in-oil emulsions and 97.63 % for oil-in-water emulsions. When repeated used in photothermal adsorption of highly viscous oil, DGA-0.8-25 can still maintain more than 90.61 % of its initial adsorption capacity after ten cycles of use-regeneration. Because of its unique advantages such as high efficiency and low cost, DGA shows promising in its future large-scale use.

The goal of this research was to study the factors influencing the in vitro transdermal penetration of nicotinamide and to establish an evaluation method for the in vitro transdermal absorption of nicotinamide. The permeability of nicotinamide was investigated with Franz diffusion cell in vitro transcutaneous assays, and the effect of the receiving solution composition, receiving solution pH, skin type, diffusion cell temperature, active ingredient concentration, supply quantity, and product dosage form on its permeation was investigated separately by high-performance liquid chromatography. The best assay for the transdermal absorption of nicotinamide was established—there was a better transdermal absorption performance, more stable system, better applicability, and better reproducibility when the receiving solution was PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) solution, the pH was 7.4, the membrane was pig ear skin, the temperature was 37 °C, the concentration of nicotinamide was 3%, and the dose of the test substance was 2 g. In the three cosmetic dosage forms of toning lotion, milk lotion, and gel, the permeability of milk lotion was the highest, followed by toning lotion and gel.

Periodontal bone destruction caused by periodontitis, surgery, or trauma results in loss of periodontal ligament attachment, which in turn leads to tooth mobility and tooth loss. Complete periodontal bone reconstruction remains challenging. Periodontal ligament mesenchymal stem cells (PDLSCs) are a crucial cellular resource for regenerating and repairing periodontal bone defects. As a cell-free therapeutic approach, exosomes (Exos) derived from PDLSCs represent a promising and effective cell-free therapeutic strategy for inducing neo-bone growth. Due to the electrophysiological features of native bone, this study proposed the use of a piezoelectric fibrous membrane as the delivery carrier for Exos in guided tissue/bone regeneration therapy, synergistically promoting periodontal bone regeneration. The membrane was composed of poly(l-lactide)/gelatin, fabricated via electrospinning, and coated with polydopamine for Exos loading and sustained release. The piezoelectricity of the membrane came from the poly(l-lactide) after polarization. The material electroactivity and the bioactive Exos combinedly created a microenvironment conducive to cell recruitment, proliferation, angiogenic and osteogenic differentiation. In rat periodontal bone defect models, piezoelectric membranes functionalized with PDLSC-Exos significantly enhanced bone regeneration compared to membranes lacking Exos or piezoelectric properties. Collectively, this study provided valuable new insights to design biomimetic membranes with enhanced angiogenesis and osteogenesis properties for vascularized periodontal bone regeneration and other applications.

Suspended nanodroplets affect the transfer process within fluids through micro-perturbation or micro-convection effects. Therefore, adding dispersed nanodroplets as the dispersed phase into the liquid phase to form nanoemulsions can enhance the CO 2 absorption process. The quality of nanoemulsions mainly depends on the emulsification equipment. Traditional physical mechanical effects can only achieve large-scale macroscopic mixing, which usually takes a long time to complete, resulting in issues such as low production efficiency, batch operation, and long preparation cycles. This paper uses an impinging stream-rotating packed bed as a reactor, with span60 and tween60 as surfactants, and adopts a high-gravity process intensification technology to prepare undecane/methanol nanoemulsions with good dispersion stability. Nanoemulsion absorbents for CO 2 capture applications have been developed. The effects of different operating conditions on the dispersion stability of nanoemulsion were investigated. Furthermore, CO 2 absorption performance of nanoemulsion absorbents and methanol were investigated in a bubbling reactor. Based on the results, the reasonable mechanism for the enhancement of mass transfer was also discussed in detail. Further experiments on CO 2 absorption using nanofluids were conducted and compared with pure methanol. The results indicate that when the undecane volume fraction is 0.01 %, the high-gravity factor is 27, the impinging velocity is 14.1 m·s −1 , and the circulation time is 20 min, the nanoemulsion exhibits the highest stability, with the narrowest particle size distribution of oil droplets, an average particle size of 20.5 nm, and the highest uniformity. Simultaneously, the change in turbidity over time is minimal. The corresponding thermal conductivity at 25°C is 0.2003 W/m·K. The addition of nano-oil droplets significantly accelerates the CO 2 absorption rate, allowing the absorbent to reach saturation earlier, while the total amount of CO 2 absorbed remains the same. Compared with pure methanol, the nanoemulsion enhances the CO 2 absorption rate by 4.48 %. This work may provide a promising green method for efficient production of nanoemulsions for carbon dioxide capture.

Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) have been widely used for the delivery of bioactive compounds. Sheep tail fat comprises both high- and low-melting-point lipids, making it a natural lipid matrix for producing NLC. Herein, NLC were prepared using sheep tail fat as the lipid matrix, and their physicochemical, crystallization, and digestive properties and quercetin (Qc) delivery efficiency were investigated. Results revealed that the particle size of NLC solidified at 4–25 °C ranged from 251 to 285 nm during 60 days. Tween 40 and 60 promoted heterophane nucleation in NLC, whereas Tween 20 and 80 promoted homogeneous nucleation. Heterophane nucleation may form fewer, larger internal crystals in the NLC, which may have disrupted the interfacial film and resulted in Qc leakage and decreased bioaccessibility. NLC stabilized with Tween 80 (T80-NLC) and solidified at 25 °C showed the maximum Qc encapsulation efficiency of 82.9 % and the maximum bioaccessibility of 42.8 %. However, when the solidification temperature was decreased to 4 °C, the bioaccessibility of T80-NLC reduced to 19.3 %, likely because the crystallization of NLC may disrupt their interfacial structure.

The primary challenge associated with stainless steel in fuel cell operation is its susceptibility to corrosion, which leads to increased contact resistance and subsequent degradation of electrochemical performance. In general, the protective layers have been loaded onto the metal surface by widely used traditional techniques such as physical vapor deposition (PVD), or cathode arc ion plating. However, the above sputtering and evaporation ways require a high-vacuum condition, complicated experimental setups, higher costs, and an elevated temperature. Therefore, herein the achievement for uniform coatings over a large surface area has been realized by using a cost-effective strategy through a complete wet chemical process. The synergistic regulation of two conductive components and a plastic additive has been employed together with the entrapment of a surfactant to optimize the microstructure of the coating surface. The assembly of layered graphite and a polystyrene sphere could maintain both the high corrosion resistance feature and excellent electrical conductivity. In particular, the intrinsic vacant space in the above physical barriers has been filled with fine powders of indium tin oxide (ITO) due to its small size, and the interconnected conductive network with vertical/horizontal directions would be formed. All the key technical targets based on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have been achieved under the simulated operating environments of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. The corrosion current density has been measured as low as 0.52 μA/cm2(for the sample of graphite/mixed layer) over the applied potentials from −0.6 V to 1.2 V and its protective efficiency is evaluated to be 99.8%. The interfacial contact resistance between the sample and the carbon paper is much less than 10 mΩ·cm2(3.4 mΩ·cm2) under a contact pressure of 165 N/cm2. The wettability has been investigated and its contact angle has been evolved from 48° (uncoated sample) to even 110°, providing superior hydrophobicity to prevent water penetration. Such an innovative approach opens up new possibilities for improving the durability and reducing the costs of carbon-based coatings.
