The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (biotype B) is a worldwide pest of vegetables and field crops . We tested the efficacy of imidacloprid (IM) with a root fertilizer ‘Root Feed (RF)’ (9% N, 7% Ca, 1.5% Mg and 0.1% B) sub-irrigated in the growing medium against the whitefly on tomato. Tomato seedlings (3–4 true leaves) were treated with 0, 3, 6 or 12 mg active ingredient (a.i.) seedling −1 of IM and with RF (0, 0.02, 0.04 or 0.08 ml seedling −1 ). The efficacy of 12 mg IM seedling −1 was further evaluated in the greenhouse for 60 days. The survival of B. tabaci adults, nymphs, and egg production were negatively affected by the treatments in a dosage-dependent manner. Treatment of 12 mg IM seedling −1 caused >60% adult and nymph mortality 50 days after treatment (DAT). The active ingredient of IM in tomato leaves also increased with the increase of IM dosage. The RF exhibited a limited effect on B. tabaci . However, the mortality of whitefly adults and nymphs treated with RF (0.02 or 0.04 ml seedling −1 ) positively interacted with IM, and was greater than IM alone. In the greenhouse, 12 mg IM seedling −1 greatly reduced the number of whitefly adults and increased the dry weight of the tomato plants at 30 DAT. In conclusion, application of 12 mg IM seedling −1 on tomato seedlings before transplanting effectively controled B. tabaci for up to 50 days, and the efficacy of IM combined with 0.02 ml RF seedling −1 performed even better. This could be a cost-effective method for managing B. tabaci on tomato and other vegetables.

To compare photodegradation processes in single- and binary-contaminant systems, a representative antibiotic (tetracycline) and insecticide (imidacloprid) were employed as two contaminants of emerging concern. Ag/AgBr modified BiOBr was synthesized hydrothermally in an ionic-liquid/water medium and characterized via various techniques to support mechanistic studies. As-prepared flower-shaped Ag/AgBr/BiOBr exhibits superior photocatalytic activity to Ag/AgBr and BiOBr. Parallel experiments were conducted in single-contaminant systems to optimize the solution chemistry for comparison studies; these suggested that the photodegradation rate (DR) is highest at 1.0 g L−1 at catalyst dosages ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 g L−1, while raising the initial concentration reduces the DR. Additionally, electrostatic interactions between the reactants and photocatalyst cause DR fluctuations at different pH values. In the mechanistic studies, the contributions of the dominant active species (˙O2− and h+) were analysed quantitatively through quenching tests with scavengers. Furthermore, electrostatic interactions between the reactants and the active species result in non-equilibrated contributions from ˙O2− and h+ in single-contaminant systems. Comparison studies distinctly demonstrated a synergistic effect in binary-contaminant systems, which is caused by the mutually complementary utilization of h+ and ˙O2− during the photodegradation of tetracycline and imidacloprid.

Imidacloprid (IMI) stress positively correlates with the potential of coumarins to alleviate abiotic stress. However, little is known about the pathways and mechanisms by which coumarin reduces the IMI residue by regulating plant secondary metabolism and plant–microbe interactions. This study examined the impact of coumarin on the uptake, translocation, and metabolism of IMI in pepper plants by modulating the signal molecule levels and microbial communities in the rhizosphere and phyllosphere. Analysis of 2 h─28 d pesticide residue dynamics revealed that coumarin dramatically reduced IMI concentration in pepper fruits. Coumarin upregulated the phenylpropane pathway genes, which increased the levels of flavonoids, phenolic acids, phytohormones, and capsaicinoids. Importantly, phyllosphere and rhizosphere microbial diversity results showed that coumarin improved the abundance of beneficial microorganisms and positively correlated with secondary metabolite secretion. Therefore, coumarin exploited the interaction between the phenylpropane and coumarin synthesis pathways and beneficial microbes to enhance the nutritional quality and IMI degradation.

The uptake, translocation and accumulation behaviours of imidacloprid in six leafy vegetables , including Xiadi cabbage (XDC), Huaguan cabbage (HGC), Gaogengbai (GGB), Shanghaiqing (SHQ), Kangresijiqing (KRQ) and Ziyoucai (ZYC), were investigated under hydroponic conditions. Seedling stage (S-stage), rapid growth stage (R-stage) and maturation stage (M-stage) for each vegetable were considered. The root concentration factor (RCF), translocation factor (TF) and bioconcentration factor (BCF) were used to compare the difference. The results show that during 48 h of exposure, the total amount of imidacloprid taken up by the test vegetables increased with vegetable growth; however, the imidacloprid concentration in vegetable tissues varied significantly according to the variety and growth stage. For individual vegetables, imidacloprid was most easily accumulated into HGC and GGB shoots at R-stage, but into XDC, KRC and ZYC shoots at S-stage. For varieties, the ability of accumulating imidacloprid from solution to shoots seemed to follow the order of GGB > XDC > SHQ > KRQ > HGC > ZYC. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed significant negative correlations between daily transpiration and log BCF and between log RCF and log TF , indicating that the difference of uptake, translocation and accumulation behaviours of imidacloprid in vegetable varieties and growth stages may be related to the daily transpiration and the ability of concentrating imidacloprid in vegetable roots.

In recent years, imidacloprid, a first generation neonicotinoid pesticide, has attracted considerable attention due to its high detection rate in the environment and food, as well as its detrimental impact on human beings. The identification of structure-related impurities constitutes an essential aspect of pesticide registration and product standard development, and is of paramount importance for exposure risk and safety evaluation. In this study, the analysis of impurities in high-purity imidacloprid material was conducted using a combination of liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap) and machine learning platform (SIRIUS + CSI:FingerID). The structure of IMI, as well as the feature fragments, were served as the foundation for decoding the chemical structures of the impurities, and this procedure was guided by the molecular formulas and fragment tree by SIRIUS + CSI:FingerID. Ultimately, 28 impurities were annotated and assigned confidence levels, of which 10 had CAS registry numbers, 5 had PubChem CIDs, and 4 were further verified by three dimension indexes (retention time, ultraviolet spectra and mass spectra) using standards. These impurities have been categorized into three levels (4 in level 1, 12 in level 2a and 12 in level 2b) according to their credibility. This approach was capable of providing accurate molecular formulas and possible structures of impurities, thereby greatly saving the time taken to resolve mass spectra. The elucidated impurity fingerprint can assist in the assessment of the potential health and ecological risks associated with imidacloprid and related impurities.

An improved understanding of imidacloprid (IMI) metabolism and accumulation in casing soil or compost-mushroom systems will help to optimise the safe use of IMI for agricultural pest control in Agaricus bisporus cultivation. In this study, the dissipation, metabolites and accumulation of IMI in casing soil or compost- A. bisporus systems were investigated. The results show that the IMI dissipation half-lives at doses of 10 and 50 mg kg −1 were 65 d and 59 d in casing soil and 6.6 d and 6.2 d in compost, respectively during the cultivation period. Three IMI metabolites were observed in casing soil during cultivation of mushrooms. Urea-imidacloprid (IMI-urea) was a major metabolite, accounting for more than 59%. In compost, the main metabolite in the first 5 days was IMI-urea, from 5 to 10 days olefin-imidacloprid (IMI-ole) and 6-chloronicotinic acid (6-CNA) were both the most prominent compounds, and after 10 days 6-CNA alone. At 50 mg kg −1 dose, IMI and the metabolites (IMI-urea, IMI-ole) were detected in the fruiting body with IMI applied to casing soil and only the metabolite 6-CNA was detected in fruiting body with IMI applied to compost. The bio concentration factors (BCFs) of IMI-ole and IMI-urea were higher than of IMI and 6-CNA, and the BCFs had no obvious relationship with log K ow . Furthermore, the potential dietary risk of IMI in A. bisporus was acceptable when application rates in casing soil or compost was up to 50 mg kg −1 . Our study supports a safe use of IMI as agricultural pest control in A. bisporus cultivation.

An investigation of the metabolism and transfer of imidacloprid (IMI) in banana plants and soil was performed using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Results indicated the presence of eight IMI metabolites in soil and leaves that resulted from hydroxylation of the imidazolidine ring, the reduction and loss of nitro groups, and oxidative cleavage of methylene bridges. Six metabolites, including 4/5-hydroxy IMI (4/5-hydroxy), IMI olefin (olefin), and 6-chloronicotinic acid (6-CNA), were detected in the fruits following leaf treatment, while only three were detected after soil treatment. Quantitative analysis showed that the total amount of imidacloprid and its metabolites transferred from leaves to fruits was higher than that transferred from soil to fruits. Therefore, leaf transfer was considered the main means by which IMI and its metabolites transferred to banana fruits. We found that adjuvants tank-mixed with IMI could reduce the total concentration of pesticide transfer from leaves to fruits, especially reducing the amount of metabolites transformed from the reduction and loss of nitro groups and oxidative cleavage of methylene bridges, thus reducing the pesticide residue in fruits and achieving the purpose of reducing the safety risk.

Imidacloprid (IMI), an emerging pollutant, has high toxicity to non-target organisms. This paper presents the kinetics of IMI removal by ferrate(VI) at different pH (6.0–9.0), molar ratios ([ferrate(VI)]:[IMI]) and added Fe(III) ions. The apparent second-order rate constant ( k app ) decreased with increase in pH from pH 6.0 to 9.0 (i.e., (1.2 ± 0.1) × 10 2 M −1 s −1 to (8.3 ± 0.3) M −1 s −1 ). The species-specific rate constants were obtained as k (HFeO 4 − ) = 1.3 × 10 2 M −1 s −1 and k (FeO 4 2− ) = 6.9 M −1 s −1 . The decreases in the concentration of HFeO 4 − with increase in pH caused the observed pH dependence in k app . At pH 7.0, the removal of IMI increased with the molar ratio from 1.0 to 10.0 with complete removal at the highest ratio. The variation in pH from 6.0 to 9.0 had no obvious effect on removal of IMI. Experiments indicate that IMI removal is mainly by ferrate(VI) oxidation and to a lesser extent by Fe(III) adsorption. Mineralization of IMI was also observed (20–26%). The addition of Fe(III) ions to ferrate(VI)-IMI at pH 7.0 and 8.0 resulted in enhanced removal of IMI, but the presence of Ca 2+ , SO 4 2− , HCO 3 − , and humic acid (HA) has negative effects. The presence of coexisting substances in river water slightly decreased IMI removal by ferrate(VI) by less than 10%. Identification of products and frontier electron density (FED) calculations demonstrated involvement of opening of the five-membered heterocyclic moiety of IMI by ferrate(VI). Toxicity assessment with NIH 3T3 fibroblasts and ECOSAR analysis indicated lower toxicity of oxidized products than parent IMI.

In this paper, a flexible terahertz (THz) Metamaterial (MM) with high sensitivity is proposed for the detection of the pesticide imidacloprid. The MM sensor is composed of a polyimide (PI) substrate and a periodic aluminum (Al) split ring resonator array. The sensing performance of the MM is verified by both simulation and experiment. The simulation results show that the refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the proposed MM sensor is 220.7 GHz/RIU, and the figure of merit (FOM) of this MM is 1.52. Then, the sensing performance of the MM sensor is verified by using imidacloprid solutions with different concentrations. The experimental results show that the detection sensitivity of the MM sensor is 12.3 GHz/(mg/ml), and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.0112 mg/ml. The THz MM sensor proposed in this paper is flexible, simple to make, cost-effective, highly sensitive and has a very broad application prospect in the concentration detection of pesticides such as imidacloprid.

Overusing imidacloprid (IMI) has been found to impede secondary metabolism and hinder plant growth. The impact of IMI stress on the interaction between metabolites, rhizosphere, and plant-microbe dispersion through various pathways in pepper plants has not been extensively studied. This study investigated the effects of IMI on plant signaling components, secondary metabolic pathways, and microbial communities in the rhizosphere and phyllosphere . Here, the distribution of IMI and its metabolites (6-chloronicotinic acid, IMI-desnitro, 5-hydroxy-IMI, IMI-urea, and IMI-olefin) was primarily observed in the pepper plant leaves. A rise in IMI concentration had a more significant inhibitive effect on the metabolism of pepper leaves than on pepper roots. The findings of non-target metabolomics indicated that IMI exposure primarily suppresses secondary metabolism in pepper plants, encompassing flavones, phenolic acids, and phytohormones. Notably, the IMI treatment disrupted the equilibrium between plants and microbes by decreasing the population of microorganisms such as Vicinamibacteria , Verrucomicrobiae , Gemmatimonadetes , and Gammaproteobacteria in the phyllosphere, as well as Vicinamibacteria , Gemmatimonadetes , Gammaproteobacteria , and Alphaproteobacteria in the rhizosphere of pepper plants. The study demonstrates that overexposure to IMI harms microbial composition and metabolite distribution in the rhizosphere soil and pepper seedlings, inhibiting plant growth.

Consumption of leafy vegetables with excessive imidacloprid (IMI) can cause serious harm to the human body. To achieve rapid IMI detection, a carbon dots (CDs)-based fluorescent (FL) probe was hydrothermally prepared using O-phenylenediamine as the precursor. The morphology, particle size distribution, crystal structure, optics and chemical bond state of the as-prepared CDs were characterized. The mechanism of the CDs in detecting IMI was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the CDs’ selectivity, stability, sensitivity, and actual sample recovery were tested. The CDs showed good selectivity, stability, and anti-interference ability. Under optimum conditions, there was a strong linear relationship between the FL intensity of the CDs and the IMI concentration in the range of 0.037–0.2 mg/L. The detection limit was 0.00187 mg/kg. The CDs were successfully applied to detect IMI in lettuce, cole, spinach, and pakchoi with spiked recoveries between 81.026% and 106.803% and a relative standard deviation between 0.001 and 0.027%.

Neonicotinoid and fipronil insecticides have been consumed worldwide, particularly in China. There is growing interest in the environmental research community about the occurrence, sources, and risks of neonicotinoids and fipronil. A new method based on high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and disc solid phase extraction (SPE) techniques were developed for the determination of neonicotinoids and fipronil in seawater in this research. The effects of the styrene divinyl benzene-reverse phase sulfonated (SDB-RPS) membrane-based solid phase extraction optimization process and the HPLC separation parameters on the detection results of the target compounds were studied. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit of this method for 12 target compounds ranged from 0.05 ng L−1 to 0.50 ng L−1 and absolute recovery was achieved from 58.9–106.5%. The results proved that this method can effectively detect neonicotinoid and fipronil pesticides in seawater. At the same time, dinotefuran, nitenpyram, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, fipronil and its metabolites were found in seawater samples from the Yangtze River Estuary and the adjacent sea area. Among them, the total concentration of neonicotinoid insecticides ranged from ND-12.45 ng L−1 and the average total concentration was 3.5 ng L−1; the total concentration of fipronil and its metabolites ranged from ND-2.45 ng L−1, and the average total concentration was 0.79 ng L−1. The results showed that there was contamination of neonicotinoids and fipronil in the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent area.
