Constructing hierarchical pore structures in melamine foams with silver and cellulose nanofiber to achieve broadband sound absorption and enhanced mechanical performance

Lu Shen,Yinfu Luo,Long Ni,Mei Liang,Shengtai Zhou,Huawei Zou

It is a great challenge to prepare lightweight porous materials with high-efficiency broadband sound absorption and good mechanical properties. In this work, a series of melamine foams (MF) which were decorated by silver (Ag) and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) were prepared by the in-situ deposition and freeze-drying method. The deposition of Ag particles on the foam skeleton formed nanopores, and hierarchical porous structures were constructed along with the existence of micropores in MF. In addition, the formation of filamentous CNF structure further optimized the pore structure, which resulted in achieving excellent broadband sound absorption and enhanced mechanical properties of corresponding composite foams. Specifically, Ag@MF-6-CNF achieved more than 95 % sound absorption efficiency in the range of 2500–6400 Hz. Besides, the compressive strength of Ag@MF-6-CNF reached 13.8 kPa at a strain rate of 50 %, which was 75 % higher than pure MF. The proposed method provided a reference for preparing lightweight porous materials for noise attenuation applications in industrial sectors.

Integration of Antifouling and Underwater Sound Absorption Properties into PDMS/MWCNT/SiO2 Coatings

Pan Cao,Huming Wang,Mingyi Zhu,Yifeng Fu,Chengqing Yuan

Any surface immersed in sea water will suffer from marine fouling, including underwater sound absorption coatings. Traditional underwater sound absorption coatings rely heavily on the use of toxic, biocide-containing paints to combat biofouling. In this paper, an environmentally-friendly nanocomposite with integrated antifouling and underwater sound absorption properties was fabricated by adopting MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2into PDMS at different ratios. SEM, FTIR and XPS results demonstrated MWCNTs were mixed into PDMS, and the changes in elements were also analyzed. SiO2nanoparticles in PDMS decreased the tensile properties of the coating, while erosion resistance was enhanced. Antibacterial properties of the coatings containing MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2at a ratio of 1:1, 1:3, and 1:5 reached 62.02%, 72.36%, and 74.69%, respectively. In the frequency range of 1500–5000 Hz, the average sound absorption coefficient of PDMS increased from 0.5 to greater than 0.8 after adding MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2, which illustrated that the addition of nanoparticles enhanced the underwater sound absorption performance of the coating. Incorporating MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2nanoparticles into the PDMS matrix to improve its sound absorption and surface antifouling properties provides a promising idea for marine applications.

Diatomaceous Earth/Polyvinylidene Fluoride Piezoelectric Composite Foam for Enhancing Sound Absorption Performance

Jiang Shanshan,Yu Zhijun,Zhu Haixin,Huang Yuewen,Wang Bin

Noise has become a major potential problem in modern society, with a profound impact on human health. There is an urgent need to develop more effective sound-absorbing materials to control noise. In this study, composite foams were prepared by the sacrificial template method combined with non-solvent-induced phase separation using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as matrix and diatomaceous earth (DE) as filler. The result shows the addition of DE can act as a crystallization site to induce the formation of β phase in the PVDF matrix, thus enhancing the piezoelectricity of the foam. Due to the local piezoelectric effect of PVDF promoted by DE and the high porosity of DE itself, the sound absorption performance of DE/PVDF composite foam was better than that of pure PVDF foam. When the DE was 5 wt%, the noise reduction coefficient of DE/PVDF-2 composite foam was 50% higher than that of pure PVDF foam, and the average sound absorption coefficient (500–6400 Hz) was 38.5% higher. This work successfully prepared a moistureproof, flame-retardant, compression-resistant, and lightweight PVDF composite sound-absorbing foam, which is expected to be a commercial sound-absorbing material. Magnetic-responsive shape memory performance of 4D-printed acoustic metamaterials

Bin Xue,Shu Huang,Hang Zhang,Youqing Zhang,Zhengqi Qian,Jie Sheng,Junhui Zhang,Emmanuel Agyenim-Boateng,Mingliang Zhu

In order to address the limitations of traditional acoustic metamaterials in sound absorption selectivity as well as their inadequate flexibility and adaptability for noise reduction, a honeycomb-thin-film acoustic absorbing metamaterial was developed in this study via 4D printing. By incorporating soft magnetic particles, the structure was enabled to obtain a remote magnetic response, thereby facilitating adaptive sound absorption capabilities. The mechanical properties, shape memory characteristics, and sound absorption performance of both the matrix material and the printed structure were independently evaluated and analyzed. The results indicated that the shape memory polymer containing 10 wt% Fe3O4 exhibited exceptional properties, with a shape fixation rate of 100%, and a shape recovery rate of 97%; the honeycomb-thin-film structure could revert to its original shape within 120 s. The tuning ranges for the two absorption frequencies (sound insulation and sound absorption) were determined to be 68 Hz and 53 Hz, respectively. This study introduces a novel approach to the development of smart acoustic materials with adaptive sound absorption properties.

Broadband sound absorption cellulose/basalt fiber composite paper with excellent thermal insulation and hydrophobic properties

Shunxi Song,Yuming Lyu,Junfan Zhao,Wei Ren,Jing Wang,Linghao Li,Qianyu Wang,Meiyun Zhang

Cellulose-based materials find extensive applications in sound absorption due to their high porosity, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness. However, these materials also suffer from some limitations such as hydrophilicity and low thermal stability that restrict their applicability and lifespan. Herein, we report a cellulose/basalt fiber (CBF) broadband sound absorption composite paper with excellent thermal insulation and hydrophobic properties fabricated by wet forming and silane vapor treatment. Benefiting from the introduction of eco-friendly basalt fibers, the composite paper has an adjusted pore structure and thermal conduction pathway, leading to enhanced sound absorption and thermal insulation performance. Particularly, the composite paper with 50 wt% basalt fiber shows remarkable sound absorption coefficient (0.71 on average) and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.034 W/m·K). As a novel application of eco-friendly materials for sound absorption, the CBF composite paper is an ideal candidate for indoor architectural decoration.

Enhanced Toughness and Sound Absorption Performance of Bio-Aerogel via Incorporation of Elastomer

Junshi Shen,Ruofei Hu,Xueliang Jiang,Feng You,Chu Yao,Huan Yang,Peng Yu

In this study, Arabic gum/ carboxylic butadiene-acrylonitrite latex aerogels (AG/XNBRL) hybrid aerogel was successfully prepared by a green method, i.e., the combination of latex compounding and vacuum freeze-drying process. After that, the obtained composites were subjected to a high temperature treatment to crosslink the rubber phase. It was found that the AG in the AG/XNBRL hybrid aerogel could act as a framework to improve the dimensional stability of the aerogel, while the XNBRL phase could significantly improve the mechanical flexibility of the ensuing composite. Compared to the AG aerogel which is highly brittle in nature, the AG/XNBRL hybrid aerogel not only exhibits significantly enhanced toughness, but also shows improved thermal stability and sound absorption performances; for instance, the half weight loss (50%) temperature and average sound adsorption coefficient for aerogel containing 30 wt% XNBRL is 344 °C and 0.585, respectively, which are superior to those of neat AG aerogel. Overall, this work provides novel inspiration to prepare the mechanical robust bio-based aerogel for the sound absorption application. Keywords:aerogels;Arabic gum;carboxylic butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber;mechanical performance;sound absorption

Zinc Borate Nanoparticle-Loaded Carboxymethyl Chitosan Aerogels for Flame Retardancy and Acoustic Absorption

Ting-Ting Li,Kelei Zang,Xiaomeng Wang,Ching-Wen Lou,Jia-Horng Lin

In this paper, zinc borate nanoparticles were synthesized by in situ synthesis using zinc nitrate and sodium tetraborate as raw materials, and zinc borate nanoparticles were loaded onto carboxymethyl chitosan aerogel prepared by directional freezing in combination with a freeze-drying technique, and zinc borate (ZB)/carboxymethyl chitosan composite aerogels (ZBAs) with excellent multifunctionality have been successfully prepared. The thermal behavior of carboxymethyl chitosan aerogel (CCSA) and ZBAs was analyzed using TG and DTG, and the flame retardancy of the composite aerogel was explored by simple vertical combustion experiments, where the introduction of ZB significantly improved the flame retardancy of CCSA. Meanwhile, the presence of ZB did not affect the porous structure of the aerogels, and the average acoustic absorption coefficient of the ZBA was the lowest at 0.58, and the maximum value of the thermal conductivity was 0.069 W·m–1·k–1, which indicated that the aerogels were loaded with zinc borate nanoparticles for effective thermal insulation and acoustic absorption. Moreover, the composite aerogel maintained excellent antimicrobial properties after the addition of zinc borate nanoparticles. The results of this study provide ideas for the comprehensive application of carboxymethyl chitosan aerogels in different fields.

Hierarchical pore structure based on cellulose nanofiber/melamine composite foam with enhanced sound absorption performance

Lu Shen,Haoruo Zhang,Yanzhou Lei,Yang Chen,Mei Liang,Huawei Zou

For the preparation of high-performance sound absorption materials, the fabrication of hierarchical pore structure has proven to be an effective way. Herein, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and melamine foam (MF) were combined by an environmentally friendly method for the first time, which endowed the final composite foam with both macropores and mesopores. The hierarchical pore structure was constructed by cyclic freezing-thawing, which enhanced the multiple reflections and micro-vibration of the sound waves, resulting in an obvious improvement in sound absorption performance. Specifically, compared with the unmodified MF, the sound absorption performance of composite foam with a thickness of 20 mm at 0.4 wt% CNF concentration showed an enhancement of about 107 % at 500 Hz and the NRC (noise reduction coefficient) had an improvement of 80 %. This work is expected to provide more inspiration for the design and preparation of high-performance sound absorption materials.

A low-cost hierarchical FeBTC/PI composite with gradient pore structure for broadband noise reduction and efficient thermal insulation

Chao He,Anze Shui,Liuhai Ni,Jiayi Lou,Juan Ma,Hulei Yu,Sai Xu

Porous materials are widely used for sound attenuation, but achieving broadband absorption remains challenging. Under the guidance of finite element simulations, this study designed and fabricated a gradient porous sound-absorbing material via the air bubble method and freeze-casting technique. The gradient pore structure, constructed via a dual-templating approach using ice crystals and air bubbles, dissipates sound waves in a stepwise manner, thereby enhancing the sound absorption performance of traditional PI aerogels. Subsequently, iron-trimesic metal organic framework (FeBTC), as an acoustic metamaterial, was introduced into foam aerogel through the liquid diffusion method to form a hierarchical sound-absorbing composite structure. The synergistic effect of the hierarchical composite structure significantly improves the sound absorption and insulation performance of foam aerogels. The FF 2 P composite aerogel exhibits an average sound absorption coefficient (ASAC) of 0.82 and an average sound transmission loss (ASTL) of 26.6 dB across the broad frequency range of 500–6300 Hz. Meanwhile, the small-pore layer with ice crystal pores enables composite aerogels to retain excellent thermal insulation performance (0.04 W/m·K). Besides, the introduction of a foam gradient structure enables foamed aerogels to achieve excellent mechanical durability. The successful development of the gradient hierarchical composite aerogel provides a novel approach for designing high-performance, low-cost noise absorbers.

Optimization of Interfacial Strengthening and Sound Absorption Properties of Acid–Alkali Nano-SiO2 Infiltrant Synergistically Modified Basalt Fiber Fabric/Epoxy Composites

Liu Shuai,Liu Fang,Guan Liandi,Zhang Jianwei

BF is a promising reinforcing material for resin matrix composites. Still, it fails to fully utilize its excellent mechanical and functional properties due to the weak interfacial bonding between BF and the resin matrix. In this work, the fibers were treated by acid and alkali synergistically with nano-infiltrant (containing nano-SiO 2 ) to improve the inertness of the fiber surface and enhance the interfacial bonding. Then, BFFC was prepared by hand-coating bisphenol F epoxy resin on the surface of BFF. The microstructure, mechanical properties, durability, thermal stability, and sound absorption properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the acid and alkali synergistic nano-infiltrant-modified BF surfaces showed excellent interfacial bonding with increased roughness and reactive groups, which effectively revised the bonding strength between BF and the resin matrix. In particular, the tensile strength, durability, and thermal stability of the composites with alkali synergistic nano-infiltrant were revised by 59.8%, 45.9%, and 48.1%, respectively, compared with the untreated samples, and the structure of the composites was also optimized to enhance the sound-absorbing performance, reaching an average sound absorption coefficient of 0.49. In future, it can promote the development of BF composites toward multi-functionalization.

Grain-Growth-Inhibited Mullite Fiber Sponges with Superior Thermal Insulation and Sound Absorption Properties

Li Jiaxin,Zhai Yaling,Su Xiaolong,Lu Zhenyan,Zhao Jian,Tian Guichao,Jia Chao,Zhu Meifang

Mullite fiber is one of the most outstanding oxide ceramic fibers for maintaining high-temperature performance while retaining flexibility. However, the rapid grain growth within mullite fibers inevitably compromises their flexibility, making the suppression of grain growth a significant challenge. Here, we develop high-performance mullite fibers with excellent flexibility at 1500 °C by optimizing the precursor-to-polymer molar ratio via solution blow spinning. Proper ratio control reduces excessive polymer content, minimizes pore defects, and, more importantly, suppresses grain growth during high-temperature treatment, thereby enhancing thermal stability and preserving fiber flexibility. The mullite fiber sponges exhibit excellent compressive resilience, high-temperature thermal insulation, and sound absorption properties. The sponges withstand 1000 compression-recovery cycles, achieve an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.028 W m −1  K −1 , and demonstrate a sound reduction coefficient of up to 0.82. This study highlights the optimization of precursor-to-polymer ratios as a promising strategy to enhance mullite fiber properties, providing valuable insights for efficiently producing high-performance ceramic fibers and potentially extending to the fabrication of other ceramic fiber materials.
