Noise, such as people talking, car whistle, tire friction, etc., affect people’s lives. In practical applications, curtains and wall coverings have sound absorption function to reduce noise annoyance is expected by people. In order to improve the sound absorption of the widely used woven fabric, a damping membrane was constructed on the fabric surface to prepare a flexible sound-absorbing composite material. Effects of fabric structure, constructed structure, membrane thickness, filler on the sound absorption of the composite were explored. From the results, the sound absorption of composite is caused by the porous sound absorption of the fabric, the damping and noise reduction of the membrane and the resonance sound absorption of the structure, which cannot be simply predicted by the model. When the membrane thickness of the structure was about 50 μm and the filler was vermiculite, the composite exhibited the best sound absorption performance: the sound absorption coefficient ( α ) reached 0.56, which was about 2.8 times that of the fabric. Moreover, the sound absorption bandwidth of the composite was nearly 1500 Hz wider than that of fabrics. This flexible composite material can be used as sound-absorbing products such as wall coverings, thin curtains and other products.

It is a great challenge to prepare lightweight porous materials with high-efficiency broadband sound absorption and good mechanical properties. In this work, a series of melamine foams (MF) which were decorated by silver (Ag) and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) were prepared by the in-situ deposition and freeze-drying method. The deposition of Ag particles on the foam skeleton formed nanopores, and hierarchical porous structures were constructed along with the existence of micropores in MF. In addition, the formation of filamentous CNF structure further optimized the pore structure, which resulted in achieving excellent broadband sound absorption and enhanced mechanical properties of corresponding composite foams. Specifically, Ag@MF-6-CNF achieved more than 95 % sound absorption efficiency in the range of 2500–6400 Hz. Besides, the compressive strength of Ag@MF-6-CNF reached 13.8 kPa at a strain rate of 50 %, which was 75 % higher than pure MF. The proposed method provided a reference for preparing lightweight porous materials for noise attenuation applications in industrial sectors.

Any surface immersed in sea water will suffer from marine fouling, including underwater sound absorption coatings. Traditional underwater sound absorption coatings rely heavily on the use of toxic, biocide-containing paints to combat biofouling. In this paper, an environmentally-friendly nanocomposite with integrated antifouling and underwater sound absorption properties was fabricated by adopting MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2into PDMS at different ratios. SEM, FTIR and XPS results demonstrated MWCNTs were mixed into PDMS, and the changes in elements were also analyzed. SiO2nanoparticles in PDMS decreased the tensile properties of the coating, while erosion resistance was enhanced. Antibacterial properties of the coatings containing MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2at a ratio of 1:1, 1:3, and 1:5 reached 62.02%, 72.36%, and 74.69%, respectively. In the frequency range of 1500–5000 Hz, the average sound absorption coefficient of PDMS increased from 0.5 to greater than 0.8 after adding MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2, which illustrated that the addition of nanoparticles enhanced the underwater sound absorption performance of the coating. Incorporating MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2nanoparticles into the PDMS matrix to improve its sound absorption and surface antifouling properties provides a promising idea for marine applications.

Noise has become a major potential problem in modern society, with a profound impact on human health. There is an urgent need to develop more effective sound-absorbing materials to control noise. In this study, composite foams were prepared by the sacrificial template method combined with non-solvent-induced phase separation using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as matrix and diatomaceous earth (DE) as filler. The result shows the addition of DE can act as a crystallization site to induce the formation of β phase in the PVDF matrix, thus enhancing the piezoelectricity of the foam. Due to the local piezoelectric effect of PVDF promoted by DE and the high porosity of DE itself, the sound absorption performance of DE/PVDF composite foam was better than that of pure PVDF foam. When the DE was 5 wt%, the noise reduction coefficient of DE/PVDF-2 composite foam was 50% higher than that of pure PVDF foam, and the average sound absorption coefficient (500–6400 Hz) was 38.5% higher. This work successfully prepared a moistureproof, flame-retardant, compression-resistant, and lightweight PVDF composite sound-absorbing foam, which is expected to be a commercial sound-absorbing material. Polyurethane (PU) foam is widely used in various industries due to its advantages in heat preservation, heat insulation, sound absorption, etc., but this kind of material is extremely flammable and has fire hazards in use. Furthermore, the material compressive properties are insufficient, and the sound absorption performance of medium and low frequencies at low thickness also needs to be improved. Based on the above, in order to comprehensively improve the properties of polyurethane, a ternary layer-stacked composite consisting of spacer fabric/polyurethane/silica aerogel (FPS composite) was innovatively designed and prepared in this study. In the FPS composite, the spacer fabric surface layer functions similarly to the wall mesh fabric, which successfully solves the cracking problem of SiO2 aerogel layer. In addition, the FPS composite reinforced by the spacer fabric with chain + inlay and hexagonal mesh surface structure has compressive modulus of 1.25 MPa and 0.8 MPa, respectively. The thermal conductivity of the two FPS composites is 0.0479 and 0.0452 (W m−1 K−1), respectively, and the FPS composite can achieve flame self-extinguishing within 40 s. In addition, the “filled microperforated plate-like” structure implemented by the introduction of spacer yarns gives the material resonance sound absorption characteristics, the FPS composite has a noise reduction coefficient value of 0.26 at a low thickness of 7.5 mm. To sum up, the composite materials prepared in this study can expand the application field of PU foam and adapt to industries that have requirements for heat preservation, heat insulation, fire prevention, sound absorption, and other aspects.

Noise pollution has been recognized as having negative impacts on human psychological and physiological health. Common porous sound-absorbing materials are often limited by low sound absorption coefficient (SAC), excessive thickness, and poor moisture resistance or mechanical properties. Herein, poly(urethane-imide) and melamine foam (MF) were successfully combined for the first time using hydrothermal synthesis and ambient drying to fabricate a poly(urethane-imide)/melamine (PUI/MA) aerogel with a multi-stage pore structure and a core–shell framework. The introduction of PUI reduces pore size and increases tortuosity, thereby enhancing thermal and viscous losses of sound waves. Compared to unmodified MF, the noise reduction coefficient of PUI/MA aerogel achieves an 80 % improvement. Furthermore, numerical microstructural modeling calculations show that the JCA model’s predictions are more consistent with the SACs of PUI/MA aerogels. In addition to significantly improving SAC, the core–shell structure endows the composite aerogels with a compressive Young’s modulus up to 30 times that of MF, a water contact angle over 120°, and a thermal conductivity of less than 60 mW/m/K at 150 °C. The facile and cost-effective fabrication process, superior broadband sound absorption, and excellent fundamental properties suggest that PUI/MA aerogel is a promising candidate for noise mitigation in residential, rail transport, and industrial applications.

In order to address the limitations of traditional acoustic metamaterials in sound absorption selectivity as well as their inadequate flexibility and adaptability for noise reduction, a honeycomb-thin-film acoustic absorbing metamaterial was developed in this study via 4D printing. By incorporating soft magnetic particles, the structure was enabled to obtain a remote magnetic response, thereby facilitating adaptive sound absorption capabilities. The mechanical properties, shape memory characteristics, and sound absorption performance of both the matrix material and the printed structure were independently evaluated and analyzed. The results indicated that the shape memory polymer containing 10 wt% Fe3O4 exhibited exceptional properties, with a shape fixation rate of 100%, and a shape recovery rate of 97%; the honeycomb-thin-film structure could revert to its original shape within 120 s. The tuning ranges for the two absorption frequencies (sound insulation and sound absorption) were determined to be 68 Hz and 53 Hz, respectively. This study introduces a novel approach to the development of smart acoustic materials with adaptive sound absorption properties.

As an acoustic metamaterial, Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can absorb sound energy abnormally. In this research, a thin and flexible acoustic material was prepared by growing MOF on the fabric. The successful growth of MIL-53(Fe) on the fiber surface was confirmed by SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS. From the sound absorption and sound insulation test results of MIL-53(Fe)@fabric, the in-situ growth of MIL-53(Fe) greatly improves the sound absorption and sound insulation performance of the fabric, and gives the fabric an abnormal acoustic effect. From the calculation results of the theoretical model, the growth of the sub-wavelength scale MIL-53(Fe) significantly increases the flow resistance of the fabric, which is the root cause of the abnormal sound absorption of the material. It is worth noting that the sound transmission loss of the prepared flexible material doesn’t follow the mass law and exhibits excellent sound insulation performance. This is not only related to the increase in the sound energy reflected by the fabric, but also to the abnormal sound absorption of MIL-53(Fe). Here, the sound insulation performance of MOFs@fabric is reported for the first time. This work promotes the research and application of MOFs in the field of acoustics, and provides a method and theoretical basis for the design and preparation of acoustic protection textiles. Cellulose-based materials find extensive applications in sound absorption due to their high porosity, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness. However, these materials also suffer from some limitations such as hydrophilicity and low thermal stability that restrict their applicability and lifespan. Herein, we report a cellulose/basalt fiber (CBF) broadband sound absorption composite paper with excellent thermal insulation and hydrophobic properties fabricated by wet forming and silane vapor treatment. Benefiting from the introduction of eco-friendly basalt fibers, the composite paper has an adjusted pore structure and thermal conduction pathway, leading to enhanced sound absorption and thermal insulation performance. Particularly, the composite paper with 50 wt% basalt fiber shows remarkable sound absorption coefficient (0.71 on average) and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.034 W/m·K). As a novel application of eco-friendly materials for sound absorption, the CBF composite paper is an ideal candidate for indoor architectural decoration.

Noise pollution is acknowledged as the main environmental problem and is as harmful to human physical and mental health as water and air pollution. However, the acoustic properties of traditional sound absorption materials in low frequency ranges still need to be improved. Herein, the low-frequency sound absorption coefficient of porous ceramics was further improved by coating a graphene oxide (GO) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composite film inside the porous ceramics. The improved sound absorption coefficient of the porous composite reached 30.4% in the range of 200–800 Hz, which is attributed to the enhancement of the thermal viscous effect and the extension of the dissipation mechanism. Predictably, designing the morphology of three-dimensional interconnected porous structures on the microscale is comparatively useful for developing a porous sound absorbing material effective in middle- and low-frequency noise.

Challenges remain in the design and manufacture of acoustic devices with excellent broadband sound absorption performance. Herein, an efficient acoustic absorber with hierarchical pore structure and additional acoustic-electrical energy conversion mechanism is reported in which combined zirconia porous ceramics and P(VDF-TrFE) piezoelectric aerogels. Reticular cross-scale pore structure enables sound waves to propagate and dissipate effectively. The vibrations generated by piezoelectric aerogels under acoustic excitation further consume sound waves through converting acoustic energy into electrical energy based on the local piezoelectric and triboelectric effect, which improves the medium and low-frequency sound absorption capability. The average sound absorption coefficient of the prepared acoustic composites reaches 0.87 while the noise reduction coefficient is 0.54. Furthermore, the composites also possess low density, high compressive strength, good hydrophobicity and thermal insulation properties for applications. Therefore, this innovative strategy offers new design ideas for the next generation of high-performance acoustic materials with promising applications in transportation and industrial construction.
