Composite medical dressings are made by combining different materials to achieve functions that cannot be realized by a single material, making it an important research direction for medical dressings. This study utilized the unique grooved structure of lotus stem fibers, and the functionality provided by different preparation processes for each layer of material to prepare a medical dressing that can achieve super-strong liquid absorption and storage effects. The prepared materials were characterized and analyzed through liquid absorption performance tests, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the pore structure of modified chitosan hydrogel, the curled distribution of lotus stem fibers in the material, and the moisture-wicking structure contribute to improving the liquid absorption properties. The composite dressing prepared using the optimal process for each layer of material exhibited moisture absorption and retention rates of 591.34% and 87.99%, respectively, demonstrating excellent liquid absorption properties. The antibacterial properties of the composite dressing were also tested against two common bacteria, and the dressing showed good antibacterial performance. The results indicated that the self-assembled composite medical dressing made from lotus stem fibers meets the preparation requirements, and has good application prospects for use in medical dressings.

Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP) is an extract derived from the rare and valuable Chinese herb Bletilla striata [Thunb.] Reichb. f.. Although BSP research has progressed considerably, producing portable BSP dressings with hemostatic efficacy remains challenging. This study describes a novel dressing with a reticulate structure. To create this structure, BSP sponges were cross-linked with chitosan and lyophilized. The resulting BSP sponges had excellent mechanical properties, a high density of pores, and an outstanding capacity for fluid absorption. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the BSP sponges had excellent hemostatic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties; they also exhibited good stimulation of cell growth and wound healing properties. Furthermore, they were less likely to provoke complications than traditional materials. Cytocompatibility assays revealed that they also stimulated cell proliferation. Therefore, our study suggests that BSP sponges have promising clinical applications as wound dressings.

Effective bleeding control and wound healing are very important and can be life saving. However, traditional wound dressings with structural deficiencies are not effective in controlling bleeding and promoting the regeneration of functional tissues. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) layered nanofiber sponge was obtained by expanding two-dimensional (2D) nanofiber membranes into the third dimension. This sponge has a layered nanofiber structure, which increases the interfacial interaction between the sponge and blood cells to accelerate hemostasis . Through fine-tuning of structure, the 3D nanofiber sponge acquires properties beneficial to wound healing such as good elasticity and high permeability and fluid absorption ratio. The 3D nanofiber sponges are both highly compressible and resilient, providing tamponade for deep wounds and creating a good 3D dynamic microenvironment to regulate cellular behavior. Further research has demonstrated that the layered nanofiber structure could promote the regeneration of functional dermis and the restoration of differentiated adipocytes during the early repair phase. Experiments using model mice with full-thickness skin defects have shown that the layered nanofiber structure could effectively accelerate wound healing and reduce scar formation. This layered 3D nanofiber sponge design is easy to produce. Due to its excellent wound healing property, this porous nanofiber sponge has great potential for future clinical application as wound dressings.

Wound infection caused by excessive exudate leads to overhydration of wounds and prevents wound healing. Thus, there is a need for a wound dressing to be developed that can unidirectionally export excess biological fluid while inhibiting bacterial infection. Herein, a nanofibrous bilayer membrane with a unidirectional water transport function was fabricated by electrospinning as a novel wound dressing, which can export excess biological fluid efficiently and further inhibit bacterial infection. The inner layer of the bilayer nanofiber membrane is polylactic acid (PLA)-zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, which are hydrophobic and antibacterial. The outer layer is polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-sodium polyacrylate (SPA) nanofibers, which are hydrophilic and liquid-absorbent. The bilayer nanofibrous membrane's morphology, mechanics, thermal stability, wettability , water absorption, gas permeability, and unidirectional water transport ability were characterized and evaluated. The study showed that the nanofibrous bilayer membrane exhibited excellent physicochemical properties and biological performance, and its mechanical properties can reach 4.6 MPa. In addition, when the thickness of the hydrophobic layer is 3 µm and the thickness of the hydrophilic layer is 44 µm, the double-layer fiber membrane can effectively export the excess biological fluid in 5.09 s and prevent the wound from wetting again. The nanofibrous bilayer membrane with excellent water absorption, air permeability , thermal stability, and mechanical strength provides a feasible solution for chronic wound healing.
