Acarid Suction Cup-Inspired Rapid and Tunable Magnetic Adhesion

Xiaocheng Hu,Yimou Fu,Yide Liu,Binhong Liu,Shaoxing Qu

Adhesion appears in nature as a kind of clinging strategy for living creatures to survive in a complex environment. Nevertheless, the artificial counterpart applications are limited by many factors, such as slow responding rate and high driving voltage. In this paper, a novel magnetic adhesion achieved by the actuation of Ecoflex embedded with iron particles is presented, which is demonstrated by a magnetic suction cup (MSC) that can switch the adhesion state within 500 ms. Compared with suction cups made of the dielectric elastomer in existing literature, the present work's driving voltage is safe for humans. Furthermore, a mechanical model is developed and verified to optimize the design of the MSCs. By applying an altering magnetic field, the adhesive force varying with time exhibits complex waveforms such as sinusoidal wave, triangle wave, square wave, and even pulse wave can be achieved. For some situations that large adhesion force is not necessarily considered while the adhesion requires to be accurately and quickly controlled, such as transfer printing and intelligent sensing, the magnetic adhesion demonstrated in this article will enrich the future available applications.

A bioinspired switchable adhesive patch with adhesion and suction mechanisms for laparoscopic surgeries

Xiang Wu,Junjie Deng,Wei Jian,Yanyu Yang,Hanjie Shao,Xinhua Zhou,Ying Xiao,Jingyun Ma,Yang Zhou,Rong Wang,Hong Li

Medical adhesives play an important role in clinical medicine because of their flexibility and convenient operation. However, they are still limited to laparoscopic surgeries, which have demonstrated urgent demand for liver retraction with minimal damage to the human body. Here, inspired by the suction cup structure of octopus, an adhesive patch with excellent mechanical properties, robust and switchable adhesiveness, and biocompatibility is proposed. The adhesive patch is combined by the attachment body mainly made of poly(acrylic acid) grafted with N -hydroxysuccinimide ester, crosslinked biodegradable gelatin methacrylate and biodegradable biopolymer gelatin to mimic the adhesive sucker rim, and the temperature-sensitive telescopic layer of microgel-crosslinked poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) to shrink and form internal cavity with reduced pressure. Through mechanical tests, adhesion evaluation, and biocompatibility analysis, the bioinspired adhesive patch has demonstrated its capacity not only in adhesion to tissues but also in potential treatment for medical applications, especially laparoscopic technology. The bioinspired adhesive patch can break through the limitations of traditional retraction methods, and become an ideal candidate for liver retraction in laparoscopic surgery and related clinical medicine.

Bioinspired nanofiber dressings with counter-transport of exudate and drug for treating heavily exuding wounds

Xuening Jin,Yihao Wu,Zizhao Chen,Zheng Chen,Fujin Zhou,Qishu Jin,Shuting Wu,Yanping Feng,Jianfeng Ma,Xiaohui Guo,Jiang Chang,Chen Yang,Botao Song

Heavily exuding wounds are difficult to heal due to the accumulation of a large amount of exudates and the difficulty in efficient delivery of drugs by conventional wound dressings. Herein, inspired by the microstructure and function of octopus sucker (OS) and tree trunk (TT), we propose a bioinspired strategy to fabricate novel bioinspired OS&TT bilayered wound dressing, assembled by a lower OS-like nanofiber membrane with concave convex arrays and an upper TT-like nanofiber sponge with vertically aligned pores. The integration of bioinspired concave arrays and vertically aligned pores endows the bioinspired OS&TT dressing with dual vertical suction property, enabling effective drainage of significant amount of accumulated liquid. Moreover, the bioinspired convex arrays facilitate distinct drug reverse delivery, achieving a drug delivery efficiency exceeding 88.27 %. In vivo heavily exuding wound treatment results indicate that, the bioinspired OS&TT dressing can alleviate tissue edema, decrease the contents of proinflammatory cytokines, and accelerate wound healing due to the unique dual vertical suction of exudates. When treating the bacteria-infected wound, benefiting from the reverse delivery of antimicrobial ε-polylysine to efficiently kill bacteria, the bioinspired OS&TT dressing shows a better wound healing effect than the dressing with inefficient drug delivery capacity.

Effects of lattice defective spinel addition on broad-band light absorption, electrical and mechanical properties of alumina composite ceramics

Minghui Sun,Jiaheng Li,Hetuo Chen,Lingnan Wu,Guohong Zhou

With the rapid development of the semiconductor integrated circuits, higher optical, electrical, and mechanical properties of vacuum chucks are required to prevent the influence of light reflection, avoid the breakdown of component from electrostatic accumulation and ensure wear resistance to extend its service life. In this paper, MnO 2 is introduced to Al 2 O 3 -Cr 2 O 3 -TiO 2 composite to form lattice defective spinel to regulate the optical, electrical, and mechanical properties of alumina ceramics via vacuum sintering. The X-Ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that the phase of composites are Al 2 O 3 and spinel, with a noticeable leftward shift trend of spinel's diffraction peaks corresponding to larger lattice constants. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirms the increase of Mn 3+ , Mn 2+ , and Vö, where Mn 3+ replaces Al 3+ in the spinel, resulting in an increase in the lattice constant. Additionally, the aliovalent ionic substitution formed oxygen vacancy (Vö) introduces defect energy levels and decreases band-gap energy (from 1.332 to 1.248 eV), which significantly enhances the light absorption performance of black alumina ceramics in the UV–VIS–NIR range. Moreover, the Vö acts as the path of free electrons in the material, thereby reducing its volume resistivity to 7.06 × 10 11  Ω cm. Although the existence of defects leads to stress concentration, the mechanical property of black ceramics remain satisfactory due to the smaller grains. As the MnO 2 content is 1.5 wt%, the absorptivity is greater than 85 % in the UV–VIS–NIR range (91.7 %@564 nm), and the volume resistivity, hardness, fracture toughness are 6.53 × 10 12  Ω cm, 13.12 GPa, 2.36 MPa m 1/2 respectively, which provides a candidate material for vacuum chuck applying in semiconductor manufacturing.

A mobile magnetic pad with fast light-switchable adhesion capabilities

Lin Su,Dong Dong Jin,Cheng Feng Pan,Neng Xia,Kai Fung Chan,Veronica Iacovacci,Tiantian Xu,Xuemin Du,Li Zhang

Octopus suckers that possess the ability to actively control adhesion through muscle actuation have inspired artificial adhesives for safe manipulation of thin and delicate objects. However, the design of adhesives with fast adhesion switching speed to transport cargoes in confined spaces remains an open challenge. Here, we present an untethered magnetic adhesive pad combining the functionality of fast adhesion switching and remotely controlled locomotion. The adhesive pad can be activated from low-adhesion state to high-adhesion state by near infrared laser within 30 s, allowing to fulfill a high-throughput task of retrieving and releasing objects. Moreover, under the guidance of external magnetic field, the proposed pad is demonstrated to transport thin and fragile electronic components across a tortuous path, thus indicating its potential for dexterous delivery in complex working environments.

A Bioinspired Smart Adhesion Actuator with Fast-Driving and Self-Sensing Capability

Chenxing Xiang,Huiming Ning,Ning Hu,Lidan Zhang,Rui Zou,Alamusi Li,Feng Liu,Kaiyan Huang,Jie Wen,Shu Wang,Xiaopeng Wu,Zengrui Song,Yaolu Liu,Liangke Wu

Smart adhesion actuators have played an increasingly important role in industrial manufacturing, medical equipment, and other applications of daily life. Inspired by the octopus sucker, a smart bionic adhesion actuator is designed that uses hydrogel-based materials with a photothermal effect to simulate the contraction and relaxation of octopus sucker muscles, enabling it to rapidly grasp and release objects weighing more than 24 times its own weight, while having good cyclic stability. The magnitude of the grasping force can be monitored in real time through an additional sensing structure, which is similar to the nerves of octopus sucker. By sensing and adjusting the state of adsorption, controllable adsorption can be achieved using this self-sensing function, thereby greatly improving energy efficiency. It provides a new direction for the design of smart bionic adhesion actuators with hydrogels.

Nanofiltration Membranes with Octopus Arm-Sucker Surface Morphology: Filtration Performance and Mechanism Investigation

Zihui Wang,Xuewu Zhu,Xiaoxiang Cheng,Langming Bai,Xinsheng Luo,Daliang Xu,Junwen Ding,Jinlong Wang,Guibai Li,Penghui Shao,Heng Liang

Precisely tailoring the surface morphology characteristics of the active layers based on bionic inspirations can improve the performance of thin-film composite (TFC) membranes. The remarkable water adsorption and capture abilities of octopus tentacles inspired the construction of a novel TFC nanofiltration (NF) membrane with octopus arm-sucker morphology using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) during interfacial polymerization (IP). The surface morphology, chemical elements, water contact angle (WCA), interfacial free energy (ΔG), electronegativity, and pore size of the membranes were systematically investigated. The optimal membrane exhibited an enhanced water permeance of 22.6 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1, 180% better than that of the TFC-control membrane. In addition, the optimal membrane showed improved single salt rejections and monovalent/divalent ion selectivity and can break the trade-off effect. The antiscaling performance and stability of the membranes were further explored. The construction mechanism of the octopus arm-sucker structure was excavated, in which CNTs and β-CD acted as arm skeletons and suckers, respectively. Furthermore, the customization of the membrane surface and performance was achieved through tuning the individual effects of the arm skeletons and suckers. This study highlights the noteworthy potential of the design and construction of the surface morphology of high-performance NF membranes for environmental application.

Blue-ringed octopus-inspired microneedle patch for robust tissue surface adhesion and active injection drug delivery

Zhou Zhu,Jian Wang,Xibo Pei,Junyu Chen,Xinwei Wei,Yanhua Liu,Pengcheng Xia,Qianbing Wan,Zhen Gu,Yong He

Intratissue topical medication is important for the treatment of cutaneous, mucosal or splanchnic diseases. However, penetrating surface barriers to providing adequate and controllable drug delivery while guaranteeing adhesion in bodily fluids remains challenging. Here, the predatory behavior of the blue-ringed octopus inspired us with a strategy to improve topical medication. For effective intratissue drug delivery, the active injection microneedles were prepared in a manner inspired by the teeth and venom secretion of blue-ringed octopus. With on demand release function guided by temperature-sensitive hydrophobic and shrinkage variations, these microneedles can supply adequate drug delivery at an early stage and then achieve the long-term release stage. Meanwhile, the bionic suction cups were developed to facilitate microneedles to stay firmly in place (>10 kilopascal) when wet. With wet bonding ability and multiple delivery mode, this microneedle patch achieved satisfactory efficacy, such as accelerating the ulcers’ healing speed or halting early tumor progression.
