Temperature-Responsive Hydrogel Carrier for Reducing Adsorption Loss of Petroleum Sulfonates

Shengwei Zhang,Bo Peng,Weijie Wang

As an effective anionic surfactant for chemical flooding, petroleum sulfonate (PS) is often used in conjunction with alkalis to reduce the adsorption loss of PS onto rock and clay surfaces. However, alkali injection can lead to scaling, aggravate the water-sensitive effect of clays, and accelerate polymer hydrolysis. Here, a temperature-responsive biohydrogel-based carrier (XLK) was designed to protect PS from adsorption onto geological features. XLK, an aqueous mixture containing 0.5% xanthan gum, 0.5% locust bean gum, and 2% KCl, was a gel at room temperature and transformed gradually into a sol above 50 °C (sol/gel transition temperature, Tsol/gel). Below the Tsol/gel, most PS was retained in the gel, preventing the adsorption of PS onto quartz sand. Above the Tsol/gel, PS was released into the surrounding medium. After it had been loaded with PS, the storage modulus (G′, Pa) of XLK increased from 102 to 103 and the loss modulus (G″, Pa) increased from 101 to 102. Environmental scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that PS filled gaps within the cross-linked network structure of XLK. Compared with the aqueous XLK formulation, the addition of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) decreased the melt rate of XLK and the interfacial tension (IFT) of PS. Among the constituents of XLK loaded with PS, KCl had the most obvious effect of lowering the shear modulus of HPAM. Sufficient amounts of KCl were effective in reducing the IFT of PS to ultralow levels (10–3 mN/m).

The superior surface activity and solubilization performance of a novel sugar − based Gemini surfactant for the remediation of PCE − contaminated aquifer

Yeping Gao,Yu Yao,Chengwu Zhang,Chuanyu Qin,Liming Ren

Conventional monomeric surfactants employed in surfactant − enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) face significant limitations, including precipitation propensity, substantial adsorption losses, and suboptimal solubilization of dense non − aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). This necessitates the development of novel surfactants with enhanced surface activity and solubilization capacity. Accordingly, a novel sugar − based nonionic Gemini surfactant, APG − EGDE, was specifically synthesized for subsurface application. APG − EGDE features hydrophilic groups derived from two glucose molecules, offering high biodegradability and excellent resistance to low temperatures and ionic interference. The hydrophobic groups were comprised of two long and straight hydrocarbon chains, providing a low critical micelle concentration (CMC: 0.07 mmol/L) and reduced surface/interfacial tension (4.0 mN/m with PCE). And the ether bond (C − O − C) acted as a linker group. Remarkably, homogeneous solutions did not precipitate under extreme groundwater environmental conditions such as high salinity (10 % NaCl or CaCl 2 ) and low temperature (<0 ℃). At 1 g/L, the adsorption loss by medium sand of APG − EGDE was minimal, with only 0.0058 mg/g. APG − EGDE exhibited superior PCE solubilization capacity (10052 mg/L at 40 g/L), exceeding conventional surfactants such as SDS and Tween − 80. One − dimensional column flushing confirmed high PCE removal efficiency after 10 pore volumes. These results showed the Gemini surfactant APG − EGDE serving as a superior surfactant alternative for remediating DNAPL − contaminated aquifers.

A new type of renewable surfactants for enhanced oil recovery: Dialkylpolyoxyethylene ether methyl carboxyl betaines

Binglei Song,Xin Hu,Xiangqiang Shui,Zhenggang Cui,Zhijun Wang

To avoid side effects in alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding due to use of caustic alkalis, surfactant-polymer (SP) flooding free of alkali has been paid more attention in recently years. This calls surfactants more hydrophobic than those used in ASP flooding. A carboxyl betaine with double long alkyls, didodecylmethylcarboxyl betaine (diC 12 B), is such a candidate which behaves very well in reducing crude oil/water interfacial tension (IFT) but suffers from poor aqueous solubility and large adsorption loss by negatively charged sandstone. In this paper a new type of carboxyl betaines derived from renewable materials were synthesized by inserting EO groups between the long alkyl chains and head groups, and both homogenous compounds (diC 12 E n B, n   =   2, 3, 4) and a mixture of homologues diC 12–14 E n B ( n   =   2.2) derived from commercially available coconut alcohol polyoxyethylene ether were obtained and their properties as surfactants for SP flooding free of alkali were evaluated. The results show that with increasing EO number the solubility of the surfactants increases whereas the adsorption loss decreases, and accordingly the hydrophilicity of the surfactants increases, leading to a decrease of their preferred alkane carbon number ( N min ). Using these surfactants solely ultra low IFT (<0.01   mN/m) can be achieved by diC 12 E 2 B, diC 12 E 4 B, and diC 12–14 E 2.2 B against C 13–15 , C 7–9 , and C 8–9 n -alkanes, respectively, and an order of 10 −2   mN/m IFT between Daqing crude oil and connate water can be achieved. However, ultra low IFT between Daqing crude oil and connate water can be achieved by using these surfactants via formulations. In comparison with diC 12 B the new surfactants with EO groups have both improved aqueous solubility and lower adsorption loss when employed in SP flooding free of alkali.

Mechanisms of nanofluid based modification MoS2 nanosheet for enhanced oil recovery in terms of interfacial tension, wettability alteration and emulsion stability

Tuo Liang,Jirui Hou,Jiaxin Xi

Recently, much attention has been directed toward nanofluids’ applications for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Here, amphiphilic molybdenum disulfide (KH550-MoS2) nanosheets are synthesized using a hydrothermal approach. The physicochemical properties and EOR potential of ultralow concentration KH550-MoS2 nanofluids are systematically investigated at Changqing Oilfield (China) reservoir conditions (temperature∼55 °C and salinity∼7.8 × 104 mg/L). Interfacial tension (IFT), wettability alteration and emulsion stability are characterized to evaluate the physicochemical properties of KH550-MoS2 nanofluids. The results show that ultralow concentration KH550-MoS2 nanofluid (50 mg/L) can decrease IFT to 2.6 mN/m, change contact angle (CTA) from 131.2° to 51.7° and significantly enhance emulsion stability. Core flooding experiments are conducted to determine the dynamic adsorption loss law and oil displacement efficiency of KH550-MoS2 nanofluid. Results indicate that the cumulative produced KH550-MoS2 nanosheets ratio to total injected KH550-MoS2 nanosheets (CNR) reaches 91.5% during flooding in a low permeability reservoir. Moreover, ultralow concentration KH550-MoS2 nanofluid can increase oil displacement efficiency by 14% after water driven. This work offers a new amphiphilic nanofluid with high efficiency for EOR.

Formula optimization of thermosensitive biological sol–gel carrier for EOR surfactants by rheological investigation

Shengwei Zhang,Bo Peng,Dan Luo

Adsorption loss of surfactants by rock formations reduces surfactant efficiency and increases cost. We propose a new approach to solve this problem. Xanthan gum/locust bean gum (XLB) and xanthan gum/konjac glucomannan (XKG) were chosen as surfactant carriers. Both XLB and XKG are thermosensitive; they are in a gel state at low temperature and sol state at high temperature. When the temperature near an injection well is low, gelled carriers can shield surfactant charge and reduce adsorption loss of surfactants by the formation. A high temperature deep in the reservoir transforms the carriers into a sol state to release the surfactants. In this way, the transport distance of the surfactants is increased, which enables the surfactants to contact more crude oil. The effects of ratio, pH, and salinity on the rheological properties of the XLB and XKG systems were evaluated to optimize the formulation and define the sol–gel transition temperature (T sol/gel ). The storage modulus and loss modulus of the system was affected by the ratio of rigid glue (XG) and flexible glue (LBG and KGM). Adding acid or base weakened the shear modulus, CaCl 2 and NaCl had little effect on the shear modulus, and KCl significantly increased this property. The shear modulus of these two systems was greatest when the two biogels were mixed in equal proportion, the pH was not adjusted, and 3% KCl was added. Environmental scanning electron microscopy images revealed that KCl transformed the loose porous crosslinked structure into a dense lamellar structure. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) and hexadecyl dimethylamine betaine had little influence on the shear modulus of the system, while cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide prevented the systems from gelatinizing. The zeta potential and surface tension of XLG (XLB with 2% KCl) and XKG (XKG with 2% KCl) with 3% SDS were measured. The absolute values of their zeta potentials in the gel state were smaller than those in the sol state, which indicates that XLG and XKG effectively shielded surfactant charge. The surface tension decreased with increasing temperature. When the temperature was higher than the T sol/gel , the gel melted completely and the surface tension was almost unchanged. This indicates that the surfactants were released slowly by the carriers before melting was complete. Both XLG and XKG proved to be efficient carriers for surfactants that are used for oil displacement.

The effectivity and applicability of a novel sugar-based anionic and nonionic Gemini surfactant synthetized for the perchloroethylene-contaminated groundwater remediation

Yu Yao,Yufeng Fu,Chengwu Zhang,Hui Zhang,Chuanyu Qin

Surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) has effectively removed dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) from the contaminated aquifers. However, restricted by structural defects, typical monomeric surfactants undergo precipitation, high adsorption loss, and poor solubilization in aquifers, resulting in low remediation efficiency. In this study, a novel sugar-based anionic and non-ionic Gemini surfactant (SANG) was designed and synthesized for SEAR. Glucose was introduced into SANG as a non-ionic group to overcome the interference of low temperature and ions in groundwater. Sodium sulfonate was introduced as an anionic group to overcome aquifer adsorption loss. Two long-straight carbon chains were introduced as hydrophobic groups to provide high surface activity and solubilizing capacity. Even with low temperature or high salt content, its solution did not precipitate in aquifer conditions. The adsorption loss was as low as 0.54 and 0.90 mg/g in medium and fine sand, respectively. Compared with typical surfactants used for SEAR, SANG had the highest solubilization and desorption abilities for perchloroethylene (PCE) without emulsification, a crucial negative that Tween80 and other non-ionic surfactants exhibit. After flushing the contaminated aquifer using SANG, > 99 % of PCE was removed. Thus, with low potential environmental risk, SANG is effectively applicable in subsurface remediation, making it a better surfactant choice for SEAR.
