Uranium photocatalytic extraction has been regarded as a promising way for nuclear wastewater management. Lots of studies showed the enhanced adsorption capacity of photocatalyst can improve the uranium extraction capacity. However, the mechanism of synergistic effect between adsorption and photocatalytic is still unclear. Herein, we proposed a novel adsorption trigger uranium self-photocatalytic extraction strategy which can enhance the transition from soluble uranyl ions to insoluble metastudtite. Silica (SiO2) with different amounts of surface silicon hydroxyl groups were utilized as both adsorbent and photocatalyst, and they were obtained by modifying with H2SO4, HCl and HNO3, respectively. The SiO2 equipped different specific surface area with an order of SiO2(H2SO4) (350.12 m2 g-1) > SiO2(HNO3) (286.80 m2 g-1) > SiO2(HCl) (264.85 m2 g-1) > SiO2 (9.70 m2 g-1). The adsorption capacity of U(VI) on SiO2(H2SO4) was highest as 137.95 mg g-1, which was 7 times higher than that of the unmodified SiO2. The improvement of adsorption performance with acid-modified SiO2 enhanced the aggregation of uranyl ions, thereby accelerating the self-photocatalytic extraction of uranyl ions. Additionally, the modification of SiO2 with H3PO4 introduces phosphate groups that significantly diminish the photocatalytic activity of uranyl ions, sequentially effectively halting the self-photocatalytic degradation of uranium. Furthermore, SiO2(H2SO4) showed the good reusability and stability after being recycled and reused five times as well as good selectivity for U(VI). The work delivers a further understanding of the effect of catalyst adsorption on photocatalytic reactions, serving as a guide for the development and synthesis of advanced photocatalysts in future studies.

Nanofiltration membranes are essential for lithium recovery from brine, but their selectivity declines under high-salt conditions due to electrostatic shielding and fouling. We introduce a novel strategy to enhance membrane performance by enhancing positive charge density on the membrane surface while creating negative charge microdomains within the membrane. Specifically, we functionalized a polyethyleneimine-based membrane with 1,4-butanesultone through a ring-opening reaction, which balanced ion-membrane affinity and optimized the transport kinetics of water and ions. The resulting membrane exhibited a significant enhancement in permeance up to 11.2 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and selectivity for Mg 2+ /Li + up to 51. Notably, it maintained over 96.21 % MgCl 2 rejection across a wide salt concentration range of 1–20 g L −1 , outperforming the results reported in literature. The comprehensive testing and mechanistic study indicate that this improved performance is due to the synergy of Donnan effect and ion-attraction, facilitated by the designed charge distribution. A two-stage nanofiltration process employing this membrane reduced the Mg 2+ /Li + ratio in brine samples from 43 to 0.25, highlighting its practical application potential. This work introduces a new paradigm for the design of highly selective membranes.

This work presents a novel strategy for the development of boron-selective adsorbent with synergistic adsorption effects, which is achieved by using tannic acid (TA) modified MoS 2 nanosheets to graft polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto the boron-selective resin (BSR), preparing the BSR-MoS 2 -TA/PEI composite material, and leveraging the unique interlayer structure of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets to reduce the resistance of H 2 O transport, thereby effectively exerting the synergistic adsorption effects of BSR and PEI. The influencing factors of boron adsorption by BSR-MoS 2 -TA/PEI, such as the PEI grafting amount, adsorbent dosage, pH value, and competitive anions, were investigated. The results revealed a maximum adsorption capacity of 31.10 mg·g −1 at 35°C, which is significantly higher than that of the commercial BSR (5.9–7.2 mg·g −1 ). The fitting results of adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics demonstrated the characteristics of boron adsorption by BSR-MoS 2 -TA/PEI, and the adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. Owing to the outstanding stability of the BSR substrate, BSR-MoS 2 -TA/PEI could undergo at least five cycles of adsorption. The mechanism of boron adsorption mainly encompassed complexation, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bond formation.

Antioxidants are usually added into NR to resist the oxidation caused by UV irradiation, whereas commonly used antioxidants are usually organic and prone to decomposition and migration. Inorganic UV absorbers such as titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles can maintain chemical stability under UV radiation, whereas the hydroxyl radicals from electron-hole pairs in TiO 2 would damage the NR matrix and the poor compatibility of TiO 2 with NR limited the process. Therefore, inert SiO 2 is coated on TiO 2 (TiO 2 @SiO 2 ) to reduce its photocatalytic activity, and polydopamine (PDA) is coated on rubber to improve stability. The strong light-absorbing properties of PDA could also improve the UV-resistant ability of NR. In addition, poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) coating NR-PDA provides the matrix negative charge, and polydiallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride wrapped around TiO 2 @SiO 2 can give a positive charge, thereby moderating the compatibility between the filler and the matrix through electrostatic adsorption. The green UV-resistant natural composite NR-PDA-TiO 2 @SiO 2 was fabricated. The composites exhibited strong tensile strength and excellent UV-resistant properties, which particularly extend the service life of rubber products as UV-shielding materials, thus showing significant potential in extreme environments.

Variations in the wettability of nanolubricants, which crucially influence tribological performance, are driven by physical factors such as substrate morphology, material composition, surface tension, and lubricant viscosity. In the study, the tert-butylhydroquinone-modified silver/carbon black (Ag@CB) nanoparticles are employed to develop an effective lubricant. Herein, the influence of nano-Ag@CB concentration, surface tension, oil viscosity, and substrate morphology on the surface wettability is explored by quantifying the contact angle in experimental and molecular dynamics simulation results. The maximum deviation between experiment and simulation is 4.2%. It is jointly verified that the strong adsorption effect, driven by the high synergy between hybrid nanoparticles, optimally enhances the wettability of the composite nanolubricant by 54.2%, with a minimum contact angle of 22.4 °, compared to single additive and basic lubricant. The effect on tribological performance is investigated by innovatively varying the wettability of the friction sub-materials. By analyzing mean square displacement, radial distribution function, energy profiles, microscopic atomic motion trajectories, and adsorption processes, the underlying mechanisms for the wettability enhancement of nano-bio-lubricants are elucidated. The results of this study can shed lights on the design of nanolubrication with high wettability and superior lubricating properties.
