Removal of As2O3 in coal-fired flue gas by metal oxides: Effects of adsorption temperature and flue gas components

Shilin Zhao,Xingyu Xie,Yiren Liao,Yuchen Wang,Zhiqiang Sun

Arsenic emitted from coal-fired power plants has attracted widespread attention. Metal oxides are promising adsorbents for arsenic removal , but the influence laws and mechanisms of temperature and flue gas components on their arsenic removal performance are unclear. In this work, systematic research on the effects of adsorption temperature and flue gas components on As 2 O 3 removal by Fe 2 O 3 , CaO, and γ-Al 2 O 3 was conducted. The results show that As 2 O 3 removal ability satisfies Fe 2 O 3  > CaO > γ-Al 2 O 3 at 300–900 °C, which is mainly related to their basic site strength. At 500 °C, Fe 2 O 3 has the largest As 2 O 3 removal capacity (adsorption capacity: 158.4 μg/g; removal efficiency: 84.68%). Increasing adsorption temperature is beneficial to the transformation of arsenic to high-valent arsenic (As(V)) on the surface of Fe 2 O 3 , CaO, and γ-Al 2 O 3 . Low-concentration SO 2 will compete with As 2 O 3 for adsorption on the three metal oxides surface, which thereby inhibits their As 2 O 3 removal ability. The presence of NO has an obvious inhibitory effect on the As 2 O 3 removal of Fe 2 O 3 , CaO, and γ-Al 2 O 3 , which is little affected by the change of NO concentration. Fe 2 O 3 is a metal oxide adsorbent with strong arsenic removal potential. Compared with basic simulated flue gas (BSFG) components, the presence of SO 2 , NO, and SO 2 +NO in the simulated flue gas all inhibits the adsorption of As 2 O 3 by Fe 2 O 3 . Finally, future work on arsenic removal from coal-fired flue gas adsorbents is presented. This work has important engineering applications and theoretical research guiding significance for the development of high-performance arsenic removal adsorbents.

Cooling Capacity Test for MIL-101(Cr)/CaCl2 for Adsorption Refrigeration System

Zhongbao Liu,Banghua Zhao,Yong Huang,Xin Qi,Fengfei Lou

An MIL-101(Cr) powder material was successfully prepared using the hydrothermal synthesis method, and then the original MIL-101(Cr) was combined with different mass fractions of CaCl2using the immersion method to obtain a MIL-101(Cr)/CaCl2composite material. The physical properties of the adsorbent were determined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), an N2 adsorption desorption isotherm test, and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The water vapor adsorption performance of the metal-organic frameworks MOFs was tested with a gravimetric water vapor adsorption instrument to analyze its water vapor adsorption mechanism. Based on the SIMULINK platform in the MATLAB software, a simulation model of the coefficient of performance (COP) and cooling capacity of the adsorption refrigeration system was established, and the variation trends of the COP and cooling capacity of the adsorption refrigeration system under different evaporation/condensation/adsorption/desorption temperatures was theoretically studied. MIL101-(Cr)/CaCl2-20% was selected as the adsorption material in the adsorption refrigeration system through the physical characterization of composite materials with different CaCl2concentrations by means of adsorption water vapor test experiments. A closed adsorption system performance test device was built based on the liquid level method. The cooling power per unit and adsorbent mass (COP and SCP) of the system were tested at different evaporation temperatures (288 K/293 K/298 K); the adsorption temperature was 298 K, the condensation temperature was 308 K, and the desorption temperature was 353 K. The experimental results showed that COP and SCP increased with the increase in the evaporation temperature. When the evaporation temperature was 298 K, the level of COP was 0.172, and the level of SCP was 136.9 W/kg. The COP and SCP of the system were tested at different adsorption temperatures (293 K/298 K/303 K); the evaporation temperature was 288 K, the condensation temperature was 308 K, and the desorption temperature was 353 K. The experimental results showed that the levels of COP and SCP decreased with the increase in the adsorption temperature. When the adsorption temperature was 293 K, the level of COP was 0.18, and the level of SCP was 142.4 W/kg.

Optimizing CaO-based CO2 adsorption: Impact of operating parameters

Chengzhuang Zhang,Jia Fang,Zhiqiang Han,Peng Chen,Xilong Xu,Kejian Wang,Yunxi Shi,Jianxiong Liao

CaO-based adsorbents present a promising approach for industrial CO 2 emissions reduction. This study systematically investigates the influence of adsorption temperature, adsorbent mass, CO 2 concentration, and flow rate on CO 2 capture efficiency using commercial CaO via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Optimal adsorption performance, achieving a capacity of 0.62 g/g and a rate exceeding 0.14 g/g/min, was observed at 750°C, 7 mg mass, 20% CO 2 , and 20 mL/min flow. Characterization (SEM, BET, and FTIR) indicated that 750°C preserved a hierarchical pore structure (24.64 m 2 /g surface area, 0.1026 cm 3 /g pore volume, and 7.08 nm average pore size), mitigating sintering and pore blockage while confining carbonation to surface layers. Kinetic modeling confirmed chemisorption dominance (pseudo-second-order). These findings elucidate fundamental mass/heat transfer limitations, supporting the development of enhanced CaO-based carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies.
