Efficient conversion of biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol to levulinate esters over commercial α-Fe2O3

Dezhang Ren,Jun Fu,Lu Li,Yunjie Liu,Fangming Jin,Zhibao Huo

An efficient process for the production of levulinate esters from biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol in liquid alcohol over commercial α-Fe2O3 was firstly investigated. Among the catalysts we tested, α-Fe2O3, a cheap, commercially available and environmentally benign catalyst, exhibited a remarkable catalytic performance for the transformation and gives levulinate esters in good yield compared to the previous studies. The corresponding esters such as methyl levulinate, ethyl levulinate and butyl levulinate were obtained in high yields under optimized reaction conditions. Several influence factors for the formation of levulinate esters were also discussed. A plausible reaction mechanism for the formation of levulinate ester from furfuryl alcohol was proposed. From the viewpoint of practice and economy, the present study provides a potential application for the efficient synthesis of fine chemicals from biomass-derived compounds over cheap, commercially available and environmentally benign catalysts.

Selective Hydrogenolysis of Furfuryl Alcohol to Pentanediol over Pt Supported on MgO

Yuhao Yang,Qiaoyun Liu,Zhongyi Liu

The catalytic conversion of naturally rich and renewable biomass into high-value chemicals is of great significance for pursuing a sustainable future and a green economy. The preparation of pentanediol from furfuryl alcohol is an important means of high-value conversion of biomass. The Pt-based catalyst supported on MgO was applied to the selective hydrogenation of biomass furfuryl alcohol to prepare pentanediol. By adjusting parameters such as catalyst loading, reduction temperature, reaction temperature, and pressure, a highly active catalyst was designed and the optimal catalytic hydrogenation conditions were determined. The hydrogenation experiment results showed that the selectivity of the 2Pt/MgO-200 catalyst for 1,2-pentanediol and 1,5-pentanediol reached 59.4% and 15.2%, respectively, under 160 °C and 1 MPa hydrogen pressure. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), CO2-temperature programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), and other methods. The characterization results indicate that the reduction temperature has a significant impact on the metal Pt, and an appropriate reduction temperature is beneficial for the hydrogenation performance of the catalyst. In addition, the basic sites on the carrier are also another important factor affecting the activity of the catalyst. In addition, stability tests were conducted on the catalyst, and the reasons for catalyst deactivation were studied using methods such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results showed that the activity of the catalyst decreased after five cycles, and the deactivation was due to the hydrolysis of the carrier, the increase in metal particle size, and the surface adsorption of organic matter.

Furfuryl alcohol is a precursor for furfurylthiol in coffee

Christoph Cerny,Hedwig Schlichtherle-Cerny,Romelo Gibe,Yuan Yuan

This study investigated the role of furfuryl alcohol (FFA) in the formation of furfurylthiol (FFT), the most important odorant in roasted coffee, using in-bean and spiking experiments. Green beans were spiked with FFA, and after roasting FFT was quantified by stable isotope dilution analysis. The FFT level in the roasted beans increased dose-dependently with addition of FFA. Additionally, beans were spiked with isotopically labelled d 2 -FFA which generated isotopically labelled d 2 -FFT after roasting. However, no labelled furfural was observed. The results unambiguously show that FFA serves as a precursor of FFT in coffee. On the other hand, the data indicate that furfural stems not from oxidation of FFA and plays no major role as precursor for FFT formation during coffee roasting. The suggested formation pathway leads from FFA to the furfuryl cation, then protein-bound S-furfuryl- l -cysteine and by subsequent elimination to FFT.

Montmorillonite-catalyzed furfurylated wood for flame retardancy

Liangliang Zhang,Jiasheng Xu,Haiying Shen,Jiaqi Xu,Jinzhen Cao

Flammability, as an undesirable inherent nature of wood, limits its usage in many fields of structural applications. Hybrid organic-inorganic modification offers a way to improve the flame retardancy of wood. In this study, montmorillonite (MMT)-catalyzed furfurylated wood was prepared by polymerization of furfuryl alcohol (FA) with hydrogen-MMT (H-MMT) used as catalyst. Poplar wood ( Populus cathayana Rehd. ) was delignified at first to increase its nanoporosity, and then impregnated with H-MMT/FA suspensions, followed by curing at 105 °C to form the MMT-catalyzed fufurylated wood hybrids. The H-MMT/FA suspensions were dispersed in the cell walls and cell lumens of delignified wood. The acidic catalyst, H-MMT, catalyzed in situ the polymerization of FA in wood, restrained the smoke emission of FA and provided catalytic sites for char formation under combustion. Additionally, H-MMT sheets can be used as an effective flame retardant due to its thermal and gas barrier properties . Cone calorimeter test showed that the total heat release of modified wood was decreased by 29% compared with original wood. The modified wood exhibited excellent flame retardancy by reducing the amount of flammable gases and impeding the diffusion of heat.

The critical role of furfural alcohol in photocatalytic H2O2 production on TiO2

Jingzhen Zhang,Longhui Zheng,Fu Wang,Chao Chen,Haodong Wu,Sajjad Ahmed Khan Leghari,Mingce Long

Isopropanol is frequently employed as the electron donor to facilitate hole transfer and promote photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. However, the role of alcohols can be more complicated due to the interaction with TiO 2 . According to a comparison of aliphatic, aromatic and aromatic heterocyclic alcohols on photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production on TiO 2 , furfural alcohol (FFA) displays superior capability to others. The presence of alcohols with aromatic structures can significantly accelerate formation and suppress decomposition of H 2 O 2 . Moreover, furfural alcohol tends to form more stable complexes on TiO 2 surface, which can negatively shift the flat band position, induce visible light activity, and boost two-electron reduction of oxygen. The altered electron transfer pathway for H 2 O 2 production was indicated by the Koutecky-Levich plots, the less pH dependence, and the signals of peroxide species in Raman spectra. This study brings insights for modulating the interfacial oxygen reduction and designing highly efficient and selective H 2 O 2 production photocatalytic systems.

Direct Amination of Biomass-based Furfuryl Alcohol and 5-(Aminomethyl)-2-furanmethanol with NH3 over Hydrotalcite-derived Nickel Catalysts via the Hydrogen-borrowing Strategy

Kuo Zhou,Ruihong Xie,Meiting Xiao,Darun Guo,Zhuodi Cai,Shimin Kang,Yongjun Xu,Jinjia Wei

Graphical Hydrogen borrowing : An efficient NiAl hydrotalcite-derived nickel catalyst has been developed for the direct amination of biomass-based furfuryl alcohol and 5-(aminomethyl)-2-furanmethanol with NH 3 via the “hydrogen borrowing” strategy. The synergistic catalysis of Ni 0 and Al δ+ -Al-O δ− site was of vital importance for the amination of alcohols into corresponding primary amines. A series of hydrotalcite-derived nickel catalysts were synthesized and employed for the direct amination of biomass-based furfuryl alcohol with NH 3 via the hydrogen borrowing strategy. The effects of the Ni/Al molar ratio and calcination temperature of the NiAl hydrotalcite-like precursors on the performance of the Ni x Al-CT catalyst were investigated. The systematic characterization showed that the synergistic catalysis of the metal and acid-base sites was of vital importance for the amination of alcohols. In particular, the Ni 2 Al-600 catalyst with high amount of Ni 0 sites (1.26 mmol g −1 ) and suitable density of acid-base sites (0.71 mmol g −1 and 1.10 mmol g −1 , respectively) exhibited the best dehydrogenation capability and therefore excellent catalytic activity. An 84.1 % yield of furfurylamine with complete conversion of furfuryl alcohol was obtained under the reaction conditions of 180 °C and 0.4 MPa NH 3 in 36 h. The presence of Ni 3 N in the spent catalyst, confirmed by XRD, TEM and XPS characterizations, was demonstrated to be responsible for the deactivation of the Ni x Al-CT catalyst. In addition, the Ni 2 Al-600 catalyst exhibited satisfactory performance toward another important biomass-related transformation of 5-(aminomethyl)-2-furanmethanol to 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan, with a yield of 70.5 %.

Alloying palladium with copper on zirconium dioxide for accelerating the selective catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol

Chenghu Zhang,Zezhou Xing,Ying Li,Tong Xu,Yinghui Sun,Jie Bai

Utilizing metal alloying strategies to fully exploit the role of precious metals in upgrading biomass chemicals remains both a challenging task and a key sustainable strategy. To improve the hydrogen transfer efficiency of furfural molecules in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation pathway, we report a Pd–Cu alloy composite nanocatalyst supported on mesoporous-structured zirconia through electrospinning technology. The chemical states of Pd and Cu in the catalyst were studied using XRD, HRTEM and XPS characterization methods, proving the presence of the PdCu alloy. A series of synthesized monometallic and bimetallic catalysts were tested for their ability to catalyze the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural. Results showed that the PdCu alloy catalyst exhibited excellent performance similar to that of the monometallic Pd catalyst. 95.6% furfural conversion and 91.5% furfuryl alcohol selectivity were achieved at 170 °C and 2 MPa N2 for 12 h, and the catalytic activity did not decrease significantly after 6 cycles. The excellent catalytic activity was mainly attributed to the alloy and solvent effects, which promoted the improvement in hydrogen transfer efficiency.

Breaking binary competitive adsorption in the domino synthesis of pyrroles from furan alcohols and nitroarenes over metal phosphide

Xiang Li,Likang Zhang,Zeliang Wu,Shixia Chen,Jun Wang,Zheling Zeng,Ji-Jun Zou,Shuguang Deng,Qiang Deng

Herein, an efficient domino synthesis for N-aryl pyrroles and tetrahydropyrroles from biomass-derived furan alcohols (i.e., 5-methyl furfuryl alcohol, and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan) and nitrobenzenes was reported for the first time over metal phosphides. Dual active sites, including metal sites for nitro hydrogenation, acid sites for furan alcohol ring-opening determine the catalytic performance. Different from traditional tandem catalysts of Pd/C and HZSM-5 or Amberlyst-15 that suffer from binary competitive adsorption of furan and nitro groups on metal sites, as well as hydroxyl and hydrogenated amino groups on the acidic sites, metal phosphides show unexpected cooperative catalytic properties with the oriented synthesis of pyrroles over NiCoP and tetrahydropyrroles over Ni 2 P. Furthermore, the catalyst displays outstanding stability and recycling performance after 4 runs. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for governing reaction routes by selective activation and shows the powerful synergistic effect of hydrogenation and acid catalysis.

Refining Surface Copper Species on Cu/SiO2 Catalysts to Boost Furfural Hydrogenation to Furfuryl Alcohol

Jieqiong Wang,Jingyi Yang,Zezheng Bing,Yuanyuan Gao,Tao Yang,Qiaoyun Liu,Meng Zhang,Zhongyi Liu

Controllable hydrogenation of carbonyl groups (C=O) is crucial for converting furfural into high-value furfuryl alcohol. Instead of traditional impregnation method, a novel Cu-based catalyst (Cu/SiO2) is prepared using the ammonia evaporation method (AE) for the efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol under mild conditions. At the reaction conditions of 90 °C and 1 MPa H2, the 5Cu/SiO2-AE sample showed optimal performance with higher turnover frequency (36.0 h−1) and furfuryl alcohol selectivity (>99.9%). After five cycles, the catalyst recycled still showed a high reaction activity and selectivity for furfuryl alcohol. Characterization results such as XRD, H2-TPR, FT-IR, and XPS showed that the excellent catalytic performance of 5Cu/SiO2-AE catalyst was attributed to the formation of layered copper silicate and the high dispersion of Cu species. Furthermore, the formation of layered copper silicate resulted in a higher ratio of Cu+/(Cu0+Cu+) at a reduction temperature of 250 °C, which was also responsible for the optimum activity. This work showed the importance of controllable synthesis of layered copper silicate in improving the catalytic performance of copper-containing catalyst.

Tailoring selectivity in furfural hydrogenolysis over NiCoAl catalyst through a simple rinsing process

Zepeng Zhao,Wenguang Zhou,Guozhang Chang,Lungang Chen,Chenguang Wang,Yuhe Liao,Jinxing Long,Longlong Ma,Yong Liu

In this study, the structure–activity relationships were investigated in converting biomass-derived furfural into cyclopentanone (CPO) or tetrahydrofuran alcohol (THFA) using a rinsing method to modulate the NiCoAl catalyst. Characterization of two catalysts, NiCoAl (without rinsing) and NiCoAl-R (with rinsing), reveals differences in morphology, composition, and acidity. Rinsing induced a transition from agglomerate to layered structure in NiCoAl-R, which exhibited higher acid strength and improved Lewis to Brønsted acid ratio. NiCoAl-R contained a high percentage of metal oxides, while NiCoAl had a high percentage of metallic species on its surface. These distinctions resulted in varied performance in FFA hydrogenolysis, with NiCoAl-R favoring CPO formation and NiCoAl facilitating THFA production. In situ DRIFTS experiments reveals differing furfural sorption states, and DFT calculations highlighted the higher activity of metal oxides in ring-opening reactions. This investigation elucidates the intricate relationship between catalyst properties and performance, offering insights for tailored catalyst design in biomass conversion.

Electroreductive C–C Coupling of Furfural to Jet Fuel Precursors in Neutral Media via Synergistic Catalysis of the Polyoxotungstate and Cu Complex

Weijie Geng,Di Zhang,Ni Zhen,Jianxin Du,Jing Dong,Chengpeng Liu,Shi-Lu Chen,Yingnan Chi,Changwen Hu

The electrochemical coupling of biomass platform molecules to biofuels provides a promising method for addressing energy crises and environmental issues. However, achieving high yields of C–C coupling products under ambient conditions remains a challenge. Herein, we present a highly efficient electrocatalyst, [Cu(pz)]3[PW12O40] (Cu-PW12), fabricated by combining a Cu-pz complex (pz = pyrazine), a redox catalytic center, with Keggin-type PW12O40, and an electron sponge. Cu-PW12 exhibits remarkable catalytic activity for the electroreductive C–C coupling of furfural (FF), a bulk and low-cost biomass platform chemical, to produce a jet fuel precursor, hydrofuroin (HDF). Under neutral and ambient conditions, over 99% of FF is converted and the selectivity of HDF reaches 91.2%. Furthermore, experimental and theoretical studies, including control experiments, kinetic isotope studies, electrochemical and spectral analyses, and DFT calculations, reveal a synergistic catalysis effect between Cu center and PW12. The introduction of PW12 not only facilitates electron transfer, improving FF conversion, but also changes the rate-determining step, favoring the formation of HDF. Under turnover conditions, the Cu-PW12 catalyst is initially reduced and then FF is reduced by the Cu center to ketyl radical after protonation on the electrode surface. Finally, the self-coupling of two ketyl radicals in solution leads to the generation of HDF.

Base-Free Aerobic Oxidation of Furfuralcohols and Furfurals to Furancarboxylic Acids over Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Supported AuPd Bowl-Like Catalyst

Wen Guan,Yunlei Zhang,Changhao Yan,Yao Chen,Yanan Wei,Yu Cao,Fang Wang,Pengwei Huo

Graphical Take a bow ( l ): Benefiting from the alloying effect for supported bimetallic AuPd catalyst and the formation of hydroxyl radical initiated by H 2 O dissociation on hydrophilic surface, base-free aerobic oxidation of furfuralcohols and furfurals to furancarboxylic acids is performed over AuPd/pBNC- x %HNO 3 bowl-like catalysts. Upgrading furfuralcohols and furfurals to furancarboxylic acids is of great significance for high value-added downstream chemicals synthesis and biomass conversion. Developing an efficient catalyst is the key to acquiring a completely sustainable process. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon-supported bimetallic AuPd bowl-like catalysts were synthesized. The surface wettability of nitrogen-doped carbon was well adjusted by the nitrification process. Benefiting from the alloying effect of bimetallic AuPd catalyst and the formation of hydroxyl radical initiated by H 2 O dissociation on the hydrophilic surface of nitrated nitrogen-doped carbon, base-free aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) could produce the highest 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) yield of 93.9 %. In-situ infrared spectroscopy uncovered adsorption configuration of HMF, and the nitrated carbon surface was favorable for HMF and intermediates to enter the active sites, greatly promoting the catalytic oxidation process. Employing other furfuralcohols (furfuryl alcohol, furan-2,5-diyldimethanol, 2,5-bishydroxymethylfuran) as well as furfural and 5-methylfurfural as starting materials, 35.6–95.4 % yield of furancarboxylic acids (FDCA, 2-furoic acid, 5-methyl-2-furoic acid) were also obtained. Moreover, the developed catalysts could maintain excellent stability and activity after four successive runs. This deep insight into the role of bimetallic synergy and surface wettability provides a basis for the rational design of the highly efficient catalysts for the oxidation of furfuralcohols and furfurals and related reactions.
