Analytical Characterization of Wooden Figurines Excavated from the Tomb of Princess Yongtai, Qianling Tomb, China

Yanli Li,Xiaobin Hou,Xin Zhang,Lijun Wang,Jiaxin Li,Gele Teri,Kezhu Han,Zhihui Jia,Xiaolian Chao,Huiping Xing,Yuhu Li

Wooden figurines were excavated from the tomb of the Princess Yongtai of the Tang Dynasty. A series of analytical techniques were employed to understand the craftsmanship of wooden figurines during the Tang Dynasty. The pigments, cross-sections, and adhesives were analyzed using energy X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDX), micro-Raman spectroscopy, polarized light microscopy (PLM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py–GC/MS). The results demonstrate that the pigments were primarily cinnabar, malachite, azurite, goethite, carbon black, and anglesite. The cross-sectional images show that the painted layer of the wooden figurines includes pigment and preparation layers. The main component of the preparation layer was mendipite. Chinese wax, animal glue, and benzoin were used as adhesives. This study provides scientific support for antiquarians and a basis for the protection and repair of this valuable world cultural heritage site.

Hybrid Nanogels-Based Printable Tattoos Inspired by Lady Costume from Tang Dynasty for Monitoring Solar UV Radiation

Neng Hu,Di Gao,Xin Cai,Lin Lei,Weijia Wang,Huiqing Fan,Peter Müller-Buschbaum,Qi Zhong

Inspired by the lady costume from Tang Dynasty, printable tattoos are prepared from hybrid nanogels to monitor ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunshine. The hybrid poly(di(ethyleneglycol) methylether methacrylate- co -poly(ethylene glycol) methylethermethacrylate) nanogels containing graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets, abbreviated as hybrid P(MA- co -MA 300 )/g-C 3 N 4 nanogels, are prepared by precipitation polymerization. Due to the excellent photocatalysis of the g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, the dyed hybrid nanogels can be rapidly photodegraded under sunshine. Based on the linear correlation between the discoloration of dyed hybrid nanogels and the dose of solar radiation, the UV radiation from sunshine can be simply monitored by checking the color in real-time. By applying different types of dyes, the hybrid nanogels even can be used to trace the dose for the synthesis of vitamin D, induction of erythema and risk of skin cancer simultaneously. Favored by the stickiness of acrylate-based polymers, the hybrid nanogels can be printed to the body as tattoos to realize decoration and UV detection. By simply switching the template for printing, the tattoo patterns can be easily changed according to personal interests and applied position on the human body. Therefore, the present hybrid nanogels can be a promising candidate to monitor the solar radiation dose and decorate the human body.

A dual-mode strategy combining SERS with MALDI FTICR MS based on core-shell silver nanoparticles for dye identification and semi-quantification in unearthed silks from Tang Dynasty

Ming Guan,Xiaojing Kang,Le Wei,Xingjun Hu,Chao Han,Xing Li,Hanwen Liu,Liang Qu,Zhenwen Zhao

Silk, as one of the representative artifacts of China, profoundly affects the communication between eastern and western civilizations, and dyes, as the color support of silks, reflected crucial historical, cultural and technological information. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) characterized by vibrational information has been extensively employed in dye analysis. However, since natural plants with complex coloring compositions in ancient China were broadly applied in dying textiles, the existing SERS methods often misinterpret results in dye analysis. Besides, semi-quantification of each component was of great difficulty by SERS, limiting the exquisite comparative analyses of different historical samples. For the first time, a dual-mode strategy combining SERS with high mass resolution MALDI FTICR MS was developed in virtue of core-shell silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@PDA), which realized the precise identification and semi-quantification of complex dye mixtures, thus significantly improving the accuracy and applicability of traditional SERS method. Four typical dye components (alizarin, purpurin, berberine and indigo) have been identified and semi-quantified in unearthed dyed silks from Tang Dynasty based on the method. More interestingly, multiple dye components with different contents and their ratio could be precisely determined, which might help in further investigating their dyeing techniques. This dual-mode strategy represents a promising tool for providing solid support for cognition, evaluation and restoration of textile objects in museums and conservation centers.
