An efficient, simple, and inexpensive N, S-co-doped hydrochar (SNHC) was synthesized from waste straw by a one-pot hydrothermal process without calcination for the removal of Cr(VI). SNHC demonstrated excellent adsorption performance for Cr(VI) and high stability, achieving a high capacity of 171.33 mg/g (293 K, pH 2) and a capacity retention of 82.73 % after five cycles. The adsorption behavior was determined as a multilayer adsorption process based on chemisorption according to the simulation the results of Freundlich adsorption isotherms and pseudo-second-order models. The characterization of SNHC revealed that graphite N and thiophene S formed by the material were the effective active sites, functioning as electron donors to contribute a significant amount of electrons to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Therefore, next to electrostatic adsorption and complexation, the synergistic reduction of Cr(VI) by graphite N and thiophene S was the main mechanism for Cr(VI) removal. Additionally, density functional theory calculations indicated a low adsorption energy of thiophene S, which increased the attractive interaction between SNHC and Cr(VI) and played the most important role in reducing Cr(VI). The mechanism of the effect of graphite N and thiophene S on Cr(VI) removal not only offered a comprehensive perspective on the role of N, S co-doped mediation in hydrochar but also provided the basic theory for its practical application.

The present work investigated an effective reductive desulfurization method for thiophene sulfur in high organic sulfur coal utilizing the potassium tert-butoxide/hydrosilane. Maximum decreases of 65.8% and 64.2% in organic sulfur for Xinyu coal and Guxian raw coals were, respectively obtained under the optimized conditions of the molar ratio of reductive assistant to sulfur of coal (15), treatment time (80 min), temperature (215 °C). According to the results of XPS, more than 80% mercaptan , sulfoether and thiophene on the raw coals surface were removed without destroying the macromolecular structure of coal. Sulfur on treated coal surface samples mainly existed in the form of sulfonate and sulfone due to the hydrolysis and oxidation of intermediate products generated in the reduction desulfurization reaction. These findings confirmed the possibility of effective removal for thiophene sulfur in coal utilizing the reductive system, which could give a reference for thiophene sulfur removal of high organic sulfur coal.

A hyper cross-linked polymer, HCPVIM, was prepared by copolymerization of vinylimidazole (VIM) and divinylbenzene (DVB), whereby three poly ionic liquids (PILs) were synthesized via quaternization of the imidazole ring by hydrochloric acid, n-butyl chloride and 1,4-bis(chloromethyl) benzene, respectively. Their composition, morphology, specific area and thermal stability were characterized, and their adsorptivity for thiophenic sulfurs was studied. The HCPVIM is a mesoporous sorbent with specific area of 675 m2 g–1, and shows much higher desulfurization ability than its monomer analogue, ethyl imidazole, being about 8.0 mg S g–1 for dibenzothiophene (DBT) at equilibrium S-concentration of 900 ppm. Its desulfurization ability follows the order of DBT > benzothiophene> thiophene, being the same order as alkyl imidazole and imidazolium based ionic liquids. Compared to HCPVIM, the PILs are also mesoporous materials but with negligible micropores, lower specific area of ∼180 m2 g–1, and lowering thermal decomposition temperature of about 150 K. The PILs show a complex adsorption behavior for different sulfur compounds. As a whole, quaternization of HCPVIM tends to decrease the desulfurization ability for all sulfur compounds except the protonated HCPVIM for thiophene, which manifests the combinative effects of the decreased porosity and specific area and the increased electrostatic interactions in the ionized sorbents.

For further enhancing the electrochemical oxidation performance, sulfur-doped carbon particle electrode was employed in the three-dimensional (3D) electro-assisted activation of persulfate process (ACS/PS/EC). Herein, an in situ S-doped activated carbon (ACS) was prepared and applied as the particle electrode as well as catalyst in ACS/PS/EC system. Several carbon particle electrodes with different annealing temperature were prepared and characterized via EA, BET, XPS and Raman spectra . Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was perform to obtain the specific capacitance and investigate the interfacial electron transfer of ACS particle. The results of comparative experiments showed significant synergy between electric and catalytic activations of PS. Especially, the as-prepared sample treated at 850 °C (ACS-850) exhibited an outstanding catalytic performance, and the phenol degradation rate was greatly improved by nearly 100% with the application of electric field. By comparing of several carbon particle electrodes with different functional groups and specific capacitances, it is revealed that thiophene sulfur functional group is the mainly active site for both electric and catalytic activation of PS, and the specific capacitance acts as assistant factor. Quenching experiments proved that the 3D electro-assisted activation of PS proceeded through both radical and non-radical pathway. Possible mechanism for ACS/PS/EC electrochemical process was proposed.

Improving inherent performance of photoactive materials and designing a novel detection strategy are crucial for achieving excellent photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor. Herein, we present a facile thermal-treatment strategy for fabricating thiophene-sulfur-doped graphene/ZnO nanocomposite (t-SG/ZnO). In this nanoarchitecture, pure thiophene-sulfur-doped graphene (t-SG) acted as a novel enhanced carrier, which can effectively improve the visible light photoactivity and photostability of ZnO nanoplates by enhancing the interfacial charge transfer and decreasing the band gap of pure ZnO nanoplates. The as-prepared t-SG/ZnO nanocomposite exhibited higher photocurrent intensity, which was about 1.5 times and 2.6 times than that of nitrogen doped graphene/ZnO and graphene/ZnO, respectively. Furthermore, we have fabricated an “on-off-on” PEC aptasensing strategy for sensitive and selective determination of acetamiprid based on the outstanding PEC performance of t-SG/ZnO by using the aptamer technique as specific recognition. This PEC aptasensing strategy not only gives insights into using t-SG as a novel sensibilizer to improve the PEC nature of semiconductor but also offers a new PEC aptasensor platform for acetamiprid direct detection. This proposed method provides a promising flexible platform for pesticide detection.
