Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enables pesticide residue monitoring to become facile and efficient. In this study, a core–shell structured gold nanoparticles@ZnCo metal–organic framework (AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF) SERS substrate was designed and successfully synthesized for efficient and selective detection of thiram. The bimetallic ZnCo-MOF shell can not only enrich the targeted molecules in the electromagnetic field because of its excellent absorptive capacity, but also act as a stabilized matrix for protecting the AuNPs from aggregation. The AuNPs@ZnCo-MOFs exhibited a high enhancement factor (EF) of 3.51 × 106 and a low detection limit of 1 × 10−7 mol L−1. Besides, the substrate material showed exceptional stability for up to 28 days at room temperature. The AuNPs@ZnCo-MOFs were used to detect thiram which displayed wide linearity (1 × 10−7 to 1 × 10−4 mol L−1) and high recoveries (83.45–99.61%). Moreover, the AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF SERS substrate exhibited excellent anti-interference ability and size selectivity for the target molecules. These indicate that the AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF substrate has great potential for the detection of thiram residues in practical applications.

Copper ion (Cu2+)-triggered carbon dots (CDs/Cu) with dual emissions were utilized to develop a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for ultrasensitive detection of inert thiophanate-methyl (TM). TM could be recognized by CDs/Cu through π–π stacking and could chelate Cu2+ of CDs/Cu through metal ion coordination, inducing synchronous fluoresent quenching of the dual emission of CDs/Cu based on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer. The fluorescence ratio of CDs/Cu (F416/F481) linearly responded in a TM concentration of 0.10–20.00 μmol/L with an ultralow limit of detection of 2.90 × 10–6 μmol/L. A synchronous response of the ratiometric sensor enhanced the specificity toward TM and presented remarkable capability of anti-interference in complex matrices. The sensor exhibited satifactory accuracy and precision for practical applications with recoveries of 88.33–101.09% and relative standard deviations of 1.61–5.06%, demonstrating an ultrasensitive ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor for detecting pesticides residues in complex matrices.

Pesticides abuse has drawn considerable attention in agriculture, environment and food safety in recent years. How to selective and on-site detection of pesticide residues with rapid operation and low cost is still a hot topic. In this work, we report a novel method for the detection of pesticide thiram using phosphorescent Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (ZnS:Mn 2+ QDs) combined by an affinity reaction between thiram and Ag + ions. On the one hand, the phosphorescence of as-prepared ZnS:Mn 2+ QDs at 590 nm can be effectively quenched by Ag + ions due to the direct cation-exchange reaction at the surface of QDs. On the other hand, the presence of thiram can inhibit phosphorescence quenching through the formation of stable Ag-thiram complex. This inhibition resulted in a linear recovery in emission intensity with increasing the amount of thiram, which enables thiram residues to be identified under the UV light illumination. In buffer condition, thiram could be detected within the concentration range of 50 nM–2.5 μM with a detection limit of 25 nM. Moreover, the proposed method has been successfully applied to thiram residues identification at fresh fruit peels. The investigation provides a profile for instant and visual detection of surface residues using doped quantum dots.

Pesticide detection based on nanozyme is largely limited in terms of the variety of pesticides. Herein, a spherical and well-dispersed Fe 3 O 4 /graphene oxide nanoribbons (Fe 3 O 4 /GONRs) composite nanozyme was applied to firstly develop an enzyme-free and sensitive colorimetric and fluorescence dual-mode detection of thiophanate-methyl (TM). The synthesized Fe 3 O 4 /GONRs possess excellent dual enzyme-like activities (peroxidase and catalase) and can catalyze H 2 O 2 to oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into oxidized TMB (oxTMB). We found that Fe 3 O 4 /GONRs can adsorb TM through the synergistic effect of multiple forces, thereby inhibiting the catalytic activities of nanozyme. This inhibition can modulate the transformation of TMB to oxTMB, producing dual responses of absorbance decrease (oxTMB) and fluorescence enhancement (TMB). The limits of detection (LODs) of TM were 28.1 ng/mL (colorimetric) and 8.81 ng/mL (fluorescence), respectively. Moreover, the developed method with the recoveries of 94.8–100.8% also exhibited a good potential application in the detection of pesticides residues in water and food samples.

A SERS substrate FP/Ag/ZIF-8 composed of filter paper (FP), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) film arranged in a layered structure was developed for sensitive detection of pesticide thiram in various samples. Roles of these components in analyte adsorption and Raman signal enhancement were studied using a pesticide intermediate 4-Aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as the probe. The substrate showed high adsorption and optimized SERS response with thick metal organic framework (MOF) coating (125 nm), which is different from previous reported plasmonic particle-MOF composite substrate, where thinnest MOF coating produced the strongest SERS signal. Detection limit for 4-ATP improved 1000-fold on FP/Ag/ZIF-8 (3 pM) compared with that on FP/Ag (3 nM). Importantly, the FP/Ag/ZIF-8 with porous and flexible property can efficiently capture pesticide thiram in different real samples using soaking, filtration or swabbing operation. The subsequent SERS detection of thiram showed advantages of low detection limit (soaking, LOD: 0.04 nM in lake water), fast detection (filtration, within 1 min in peach juice) and suitable for curve surface analysis (swabbing, LOD: 0.1 ng/cm 2 on apple peel), respectively. The substrate also displayed good reproducibility, high stability and size-selective response for thiram detection. Such a layered plasmonic particle/MOF hybrid may hold great promise for toxicant analysis in environment and food.

The noble metal nanoparticles-based colorimetric detection can simply determine the concentration of the substances by naked eyes, but difficultly resolve the conflict between sensitivity and anti-interference ability. Herein, a triangular silver nanoplates (TSNPs)-based anti-etching colorimetric detection method for analyzing thiram was proposed by regulating the antagonistic action between the protection of thiram and the etching of I − on TSNPs . The internal mechanism of etching induced peak shift of TSNPs was revealed by the discrete dipole approximation method. The effect of thiram and I − on the color of TSNPs was systematically studied. As a consequence, this method not only shows a limit of detection of 19.7 nM in the linear range of 0.025−0.35 μM by absorption spectroscopy, but also produces sensitive color changes for the detection by naked eyes. Especially, it shows good selectivity that can resist the interference of other substances including other pesticides and halide ions in the specimens. It also shows excellent applicability in the detection of thiram residues in soil. This work provides a potential device-free strategy for the application of colorimetric detection in specimens with lots of interfering substances.

In this study, a prospective strategy on seed-mediated growth in vacuum is provided and used to prepare flexible silver nanofilms (AC 0–3 NFs) with high purity, crystallinity and SERS performance. Noteworthy, AC 2 NFs surface is uniformly covered with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), following the appearance of numerous nano-gaps between Ag NPs. Through the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation, it is found that the ultra-small nano-gaps less than 5 nm can generate abundant “hot spots” to amplify the Raman signal. Therefore, the above AC 2 NFs as SERS substrates exhibit superior activity for the SERS detection of thiram in tomato juice, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 10 −15 M and the enhancement factor (EF) of 3.7 × 10 11 . Meanwhile, AC 2 NFs show outstanding reproducibility and stability during the SERS detection. Additionally, the calibration curve is established, by which the thiram (10 −7 to 10 −15 M) can be quantitatively detected. Clearly, the as-prepared flexible AC 2 NFs have great potential in the SERS detection and analysis.

For on-site analysis, the combination of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and colorimetry, as a dual-mode detection, can effectively improve the accuracy of detection, and reduce the influence of instrument fluctuation, which greatly improves the accuracy and reliability of the results. However, the preparation of SERS/colorimetry substrates are usually time-consuming and costly, which limits their practical applications. In this paper, a hydrophobic paper-based SERS/colorimetry substrate can be prepared by a simple spraying method. The hydrophobicity is introduced by the structures formed with polydimethylsiloxane and polymethylmethacrylate, which leads to high detection sensitivity due to its enrichment effect. Moreover, the electrostatic interaction between Ag nanoparticles and the analytes further enhances the performance of SERS and colorimetry in detection of thiram and aspartame. It also provides a new method for the detection of aspartame with colorimetry. Finally, the detection limits of SERS and colorimetry for thiram and aspartame are 0.1 mg/L and 0.1 g/L, 1 mg/L and 0.1 g/L, respectively. The paper-based SERS/colorimetry substrate makes the results more reliable through dual-mode detection, which shows great potential in the detection of real samples.

The purpose of this study was to develop a flexible substrate methylcellulose-decorated silver nanoparticles (MC/Ag NPs) film and explore its application in fruits and vegetables by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology for rapid detection of pesticides. The performance of the MC/Ag NPs film substrate was characterized by Nile blue A (NBA), and the detection limit was as low as 10−8M. The substrate also exhibited satisfactory Raman signal strength after two months of storage. The impressive sensitivity and stability were due to the excellent homogeneity of the silver nanoparticles that were grown in situ in the methylcellulose matrix, which generated “hot spots” between the silver nanoparticles without a large amount of aggregation, and resulted in the ultra-high sensitivity and excellent stability of the MC/Ag NPs film substrate. The MC/Ag NPs film substrate was used to detect thiram pesticides on tomato and cucumber peels, and the minimum detectable level of thiram was 2.4 ng/cm2, which was much lower than the maximum residue level. These results indicate that the MC/Ag NPs film is sensitive to rapid detection of multiple pesticides in food. Keywords:surface enhanced Raman scattering;flexible;thiram;MC/Ag NPs film;in situ

The development of sensitive fluorescence sensors and efficient preparation of samples is a challenge in the detection of pesticides in complex samples. In this study, multicolor nitrogen dots (M-Ndots) were synthesised via microwave irradiation at 140 °C for 10 min with 5-amino-1H-tetrazole and p-phenylenediamine as precursors, which have a high fluorescence quantum yield of up to 31%. Furthermore, the M-Ndots were employed as fluorescence sensors for pesticide detection by being combined with a gas membrane separation device, to eliminate the interference from the complex sample matrix. In this process, the M-Ndots were used for sensing thiram and chlorpyrifos through their affinities to Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ , respectively. Because thiram could decompose into volatile CS 2 , its derivate was sensed using the fluorescence of M-Ndots via a complexation reaction with Cu 2+ . Chlorpyrifos, due to its volatility, can reduce the Fe 3+ ion by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase , which produces H 2 O 2 to oxidise Fe 2+ . In a real application, the time consumption for 96 samples was less than 30 min in one run of the gas membrane separation device. The recoveries for thiram and chlorpyrifos ranged from 90.0% to 115.0%, and the analytical results were validated using LC-MS/MS methods, with relative errors ranging from −7.4% to 10.1%.

In response to the prevalent issue of thiram as a common pesticide residue on the surface of fruits and vegetables, our research team employed an acidic hydrated metal salt low co-fusion solvent to dissolve cellulose lysis slurry. Subsequently, a regenerated cellulose membrane (RCM) was successfully prepared via sol-gel method. Uniformly sized Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on RCM utilizing the continuous ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. The resulting Ag NPs/RCM flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates exhibited a minimum detection limit of 5 × 10 −9 M for Rhodamine 6G (R6G), demonstrating good uniformity (RSD = 4.86 %) and reproducibility (RSD = 3.07 %). Moreover, the substrate displayed a remarkable sensitivity of 10 −10 M toward thiram standard solution. Given its inherent flexibility, the substrate proves advantageous for the detection of three-dimensional environments such as fruit and vegetable surfaces, and its practicality has been confirmed in the detection of thiram residue on apples, tomatoes, pears, and other fruits and vegetables.

Thiram (THI) and asomate (ASO) are frequently detected agrochemicals in food samples due to widespread use as fungicides. However, their detection suffers from matrix interference, or the necessity of derivatization before measurement. Integrating HPLC with a post-column carbon dots (CDs)–enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) system makes it possible to simultaneously separate and selectively detect ASO and THI in fruit samples free of derivatization and deep purification. The studies on mechanisms demonstrated that CD intermediates of anionic radical were responsible for the remarkable CL enhancement of ASO or THI. The CL intensity is directly proportional to the fungicide concentration, with the ranges of linearity for ASO and THI being 5–250 μg·L −1 ( R 2 = 0.9993 ) and 4–200 μg·L −1 ( R 2 = 0.9986 ), respectively, and the corresponding limits of detection (S/N = 3) being 1.61 and 1.33 μg·L −1 , respectively. The developed method enables the exploration of the novelly sulphur-targeted CL application based on carbon nanomaterials.
