The quest for platinum-based catalysts with enhanced catalytic efficacy and durability during the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) has been a focal point in energy conversion science. Traditional platinum-based catalysts are often constrained by their high platinum content, which escalates economic costs and complicates experimental protocols. In this study, we introduce a low-platinum-loaded catalyst synthesized via a two-step method, which incorporates a four-component alloy. This innovative approach significantly reduces platinum content while maintaining superior catalytic performance through precise control over the alloy’s composition and structure. The two-step synthesis methodology streamlines the conventional multi-step processes, enhancing the catalyst preparation’s efficiency and reproducibility. The resulting PtCoSnCu/N-C alloy catalyst exhibits remarkable catalytic activity in methanol solution, with mass activity and specific activity that are 9.73 and 9.75 times higher, respectively, than those of commercial platinum on carbon (Pt/C) catalysts. Notably, the optimized PtCoSnCu/N-C alloy catalyst demonstrates exceptional long-term stability, outperforming Pt/C in aging and extended stability tests. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate the optimization of the electronic structure and the synergistic effect of surface atoms in the PtCoSnCu/N-C catalyst, which mitigates the adsorption energy of CO molecules and enhances the utilization rate of active sites during the oxidation process. This research presents a paradigm-shifting low-platinum catalyst strategy for methanol fuel cells, establishing a theoretical foundation for catalyst design and optimization.

The controllable synthesis of mesoporous Pt-based catalysts with designed compositions is highly desired for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, we look beyond the traditional Pt-based all-metal alloys and fabricate quaternary PtPdNiP mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdNiP MNs) using a facile two-step strategy. Benefitting from their mesoporous nanoarchitectures and composition effect, the as-fabricated PtPdNiP MNs exhibit superior catalytic activity and durability for the ORR. The proposed synthetic strategy is highly feasible for the fabrication of metal–nonmetal nanoarchitectures with designed structures and controlled compositions.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as a promising energy storage solution owing to their intrinsic safety, low cost, environmental friendliness, and high theoretical specific capacity. However, their practical application is hindered by uncontrollable dendrite growth and side reactions at the zinc metal anode. To address these challenges, a simple and cost-effective electrodeposition strategy is proposed to construct a quaternary Zn-Cu-Sn-Bi alloy artificial interface layer on zinc foil (ZCSB@Zn) as the anode of AZIBs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ optical dendrite observation confirm that this dense alloy interface layer reduces the migration barrier and weakens hydrogen adsorption, facilitating uniform zinc deposition while effectively suppressing side reactions and dendrite formation. The symmetric ZCSB@Zn cell exhibits extraordinary cycle stability exceeding 8000 h. Furthermore, the assembled ZCSB@Zn//CSB-MnO 2 full cell demonstrates a high specific capacity of 199 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 , maintaining stability even under high loading of 10 mg cm −2 and high temperature conditions (50 °C). This study presents a scalable and cost-effective strategy for constructing quaternary artificial interface layers in zinc metal anodes, highlighting their potential for practical AZIB applications.

Silver-based I–III–VI-type semiconductor nanocrystals have received extensive attention due to their narrow-band luminescence properties. Herein, we demonstrated a seed-mediated growth of quaternary Ag–In–Ga–S (AIGS) nanocrystals (NCs) with narrow-band luminescence. By conducting partial cation exchange with In3+ and Ga3+ based on Ag2S NCs and controlling the Ag/In feeding ratios (0.25 to 2) of Ag–In–S seeds as well as the inventory of 1-dodecanethiol, we achieved optimized luminescence performance in the synthesized AIGS NCs, characterized by a narrow full width at half maximum of less than 40 nm. Meanwhile, narrow-band luminescent AIGS NCs exhibit a tetragonal AgGaS2 crystal structure and a gradient alloy structure, rather than a core–shell structure. Most importantly, the kinetics decay curves of time-resolved photoluminescence and the ground state bleaching in transient absorption generally agree with each other regarding the lifetime of the second decay component, which indicates that the narrow-band luminescence is due to the slow radiative recombination between trapped electrons and trapped holes located at the edge of the conduction band and the deep silver-related trap states (e.g., silver vacancy), respectively. This study provides new insights into the correlation between the narrow-band luminescence properties and the structural characteristics of AIGS NCs.
