Electrochromic windows can control the amount of sunlight entering buildings, thus enabling thermal regulation and offering a significant opportunity to reduce building energy consumption. However, current electrochromic windows encounter difficulties with multi-color control and fully independent adjustment of visible light and near-infrared heat. Herein, this work introduces an advanced multi-color four-mode dual-band electrochromic smart window (DESW) that not only showcases various color transformations but also independently manages visible light and near-infrared heat from solar radiation, providing year-round thermal regulation for buildings. This device features a zinc anode with Prussian blue analogues and tungsten oxide film electrodes. Its optical state superposition effect allows for a range of color transformations (yellow, orange, green, and black), enhancing visual appeal and offering four distinct optical states for precise control of visible light and near-infrared transmittance. Simulation results show that this device achieves greater energy efficiency than commercial glass in most global climates throughout the year. Moreover, the energy generated by this multi-color four-mode DESW can be used to power low-energy devices within the building, further decreasing overall energy consumption. This research opens up extensive possibilities for smart window design and supports the development of green buildings, contributing to global carbon neutrality and sustainable development.
Increasing modal variations of stimulus-responsive materials ensure the high capacity and confidentiality of information storage and encryption systems that are crucial to information security. Herein, thermochromic perovskite microcapsules (TPMs) with dual-variable and quadruple-modal reversible properties are designed and prepared on the original oil-in-fluorine (O/F) emulsion system. The TPMs respond to the orthogonal variations of external UV and thermal stimuli in four reversible switchable modes and exhibit excellent thermal, air, and water stability due to the protection of perovskites by the core–shell structure. Benefiting from the high-density information storage TPMs, multiple information encryptions and decryptions are demonstrated. Moreover, a set of devices are assembled for a multilevel information encryption system. By taking advantage of TPMs as a “private key” for decryption, the signal can be identified as the corresponding binary ASCII code and converted to the real message. The results demonstrate a breakthrough in high-density information storage materials as well as a multilevel information encryption system based on switchable quadruple-modal TPMs.
Recently, persistent luminescence materials (PLMs) have attracted extensive attention in the anti-counterfeiting and information encryption fields. Unfortunately, single visible persistent luminescence (PersL) demonstrates limited information security because the changes in information coded by visible PersL can be observed by the human eyes. In this work, we develop a dual-mode PLM with ultraviolet (UV) and visible PersL, Mg3Lu2Ge3O12:Bi3+,Re3+ (Re3+ = Pr3+ and Tb3+) (MLGO:Bi3+,Re3+). The emitter Bi3+ yields invisible UV PersL, and the emitter Re3+ exhibits visible PersL. The color of visible PersL can be changed upon variation of the Re3+ content. Because the UV PersL hidden behind visible PersL is invisible to the human eyes, the capacity of invisible information encryption can be realized. With a specific filter and a charge coupled device camera for detection, the encrypted optical information will appear. Based on the dual-mode PLM with UV and visible PersL, we design the four-mode information encryption method and display excellent information encryption capability.
