The performance of Fe(III)-based catalyzed sodium percarbonate (SPC) for stimulating the oxidation of tetrachloroethene (PCE) for groundwater remediation applications was investigated. The chelating agents citric acid monohydrate (CIT), oxalic acid (OA), and glutamic acid (Glu) significantly enhanced the degradation of PCE. Conversely, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) had a negative impact on PCE degradation, which may due to its strong Fe chelation and HO scavenging abilities. However, excessive SPC or chelating agent will retard PCE degradation. In addition, investigations using free radical probe compounds and radical scavengers revealed that PCE was primarily degraded by HO radical oxidation in both the chelated and non-chelated systems, while O 2 − also participated in the non-chelated system and the OA and Glu modified systems. According to the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies, the presence of HO in the Fe(III)/SPC system was maintained much longer than that in the Fe(II)/SPC system. The results indicated that the addition of CIT, OA or Glu indeed enhanced the generation of HO in the first 10 min and promoted degradation efficiency by increasing the amount of Fe(III) and maintaining the concentration of HO radicals in solution. In conclusion, chelated Fe(III)-based catalyzed SPC oxidation is a promising method for the remediation of PCE-contaminated groundwater.

In this study, a novel and environmental-friendly biochar prepared by alien species, Alternanthera philoxeroides ( AP ) under a temperature range of 300–700˚C (BC300-BC700), was applied to remove phenanthrene (PHE), perchloroethylene (PCE), and PHE/PCE bi-contaminant from aqueous solutions. Interestingly, the maximum adsorption capacity of AP biochar changed nonlinearly as the pyrolysis temperature increased, with BC400 and BC300 having the highest maximum adsorption capacities of 2.83 and 2.13 mg/g, respectively, followed by BC700, BC500, and BC600. The sorption kinetics of PHE and PCE on BC300 under single- and bi-contaminant conditions can be described by pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order kinetic models, respectively. In addition, it was observed that PHE and PCE could be removed simultaneously by BC300, and the presence of PHE inhibited the maximum sorption capacity of PCE onto AP biochar. Furthermore, this study revealed that the functional groups of C-O, C = O, and C = C played a key role in the removal of PHE/PCE from bi-contaminant solutions. These findings suggested that pyrolysis of invasive plants can be an option to control invasive plants and also contribute to the adsorption of organic contaminants for contaminant remediation. Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) with extracellular electron transfer (EET) capabilities have shown significant potential for bioremediating halogenated hydrocarbon contaminated sites rich in iron and humic substances. However, the role and microbial molecular mechanisms of iron-humic acid (Fe-HA) complexes in the reductive dehalogenation process of DIRB remains inadequately elucidated. In this study, we developed a sustainable carbon cycling approach using Fe-HA complexes to modulate the electron flux from sawdust (SD), enabling almost complete reductive dechlorination by most DIRB (e.g., Shewanella oneidensis MR-1) that lack complex iron-sulfur molybdo enzymes. The SD-Fe-HA/MR-1 system achieved a 96.52% removal efficiency of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) at concentrations up to 250 μmol/L within 60 days. Material characterization revealed that DIRB facilitated the hydrolysis of macromolecular carbon sources by inducing the formation of amorphous ferrihydrite (FeOOH) in Fe-HA complexes. More importantly, the bioavailable FeOOH activated additional intracellular electron flow pathways, increasing the activity of potential dehalogenases. Transcriptome further highlight the innovative role of biogenic amorphous FeOOH in integrating intracellular redox metabolism with extracellular charge exchange to facilitate reductive dechlorination in DIRB. These findings provide novel insights into accelerating reductive dechlorination in-situ contaminated sites lacking obligate dehalogenating bacteria.

In situ thermal desorption (ISTD) technology effectively remediates soil contaminated by dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). However, more efforts are required to minimize the energy consumption of ISTD technology. This study developed a laboratory-scale experimental device to explore the coupling merits of two traditional desorption technologies: steam-enhanced extraction (SEE) and electrical resistance heating (ERH). The results showed that injecting high-density steam (> 1 g/min) into loam or clay with relatively high moisture content (> 13.3%) could fracture the soil matrix and lead to the occurrence of the preferential flow of steam. For ERH alone, the electrical resistance and soil moisture loss were critical factors influencing heating power. When ERH and SEE were combined, preheating soil by ERH could increase soil permeability, effectively alleviating the problem of preferential flow of SEE. Meanwhile, steam injection heated the soil and provided moisture for maintaining soil electrical conductivity, thereby ensuring power stability in the ERH process. Compared with ERH alone (8 V/cm) and SEE alone (1 g/min steam), the energy consumption of combined method in remediating perchloroethylene-contaminated soil was reduced by 39.3% and 52.9%, respectively. These findings indicate that the combined method is more favorable than ERH or SEE alone for remediating DNAPL-contaminated subsurfaces when considering ISTD technology.

Viscosity remedial technology, which uses a water-soluble polymer mixed with remedial fluids, has been introduced in recent years to improve the removal efficacy of perchloroethylene/tetrachloroethylene (PCE) by improving oxidant coverage (i.e. sweep efficiency). Xanthan gum and hydrolysed polyacrylamide (HPAM) are relatively stable with time and temperature and possess salt and oxidation resistance, indicating that they may be good flooding agents (the former is better than the latter in this work). In this work, we quantified the polymer directly improved oxidation of PCE during transport by using a two-dimensional flow tank. Using a low pore volume (≤3.0), the removal rate of the PCE increased with the polymer concentration before stabilizing at approximately 93.00 and 88.30% for xanthan and HPAM, respectively. In this work, over 80% of PCE was removed via less than 3.0 PV of the SDS solution, whereas complete removal (100%) was achieved with less than 3.0 PV of SDS foam. Furthermore, the new experimental discoveries demonstrate that xanthan is better than HPAM and SDS foam is a better remediation agent than the SDS solution for removing PCE.

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds, such as tetrachloroethylene (PCE), are the most commonly detected toxic contaminants in groundwater. In this study, the performance of PCE removal by a microbial consortium combined with nZVI modified by layered double hydroxide (nZVI-LDH) was evaluated. The enriched PCE-degrading consortium consisted of 44.49% Clostridium and other potential PCE degraders, and 0.5–2.5 mg/L PCE was completely biodegraded within 4 days. The characterization of nZVI-LDH indicated that LDH was coated on the surfaces of nZVI particles with an increased surface area. The PCE removal kinetics by nZVI-LDH was well described by a second-order model, and the removal rate constant of nZVI-LDH was 0.12 L h/mg, higher than that of native nZVI (0.02 L h/mg). Interestingly, the presence of Cu 2+ improved the removal efficiency of PCE by nZVI-LDH, owing to its role as a catalyst or medium for charge transfer during reduction. Removal of PCE was enhanced by coupling the PCE-degrading consortium and nZVI-LDH. The initial removal of PCE was mainly dominated by the abiotic degradation and adsorption of nZVI-LDH, and biodegradation then played a major role in the exhaustion of nZVI-LDH. These results suggest that biodegradation coupled with nZVI-LDH has a great potential for applications in the remediation of chlorinated-solvent contaminated groundwater.

Microbial reductive dechlorination has been considered an effective process for the clean-up of organohalide-contaminated sites. Heavy metal ions are commonly present as co-contaminants in various organohalide-contaminated sites. To understand the impacts of heavy metal ions on the environmental fate of organohalides, we investigated the effects of Zn2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ on reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) in sediment microcosms and transferred enrichment cultures. PCE and 1,2-DCA-dechlorinating enrichment cultures could be consecutively transferred in the presence of up to 10 mg/L Cu2+ or 10 mg/L Zn2+; by comparison, up to 50 mg/L Cd2+ had minor impacts on the microbial reductive dechlorination of PCE and 1,2-DCA. The inhibitory effects of tested heavy metal ions on microbial reductive dechlorination ranked in descending order are Zn2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+. Community profiling and principal component analysis indicate that the concentration and type of contaminants (e.g., heavy metal ions, organohalides) shaped the microbial community structure, an observation similar to a prior report. The enrichment of certain organohalide-respring bacteria (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalogenimonas) during continuous transfers exposed to heavy metal ions suggests that they are capable of tolerating high concentrations of heavy metal ions. Our findings provide insights into the impacts of heavy metal ions on microbial reductive dechlorination and may be helpful for in situ bioremediation at sites contaminated with organohalides and heavy metals.

Conventional monomeric surfactants employed in surfactant − enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) face significant limitations, including precipitation propensity, substantial adsorption losses, and suboptimal solubilization of dense non − aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). This necessitates the development of novel surfactants with enhanced surface activity and solubilization capacity. Accordingly, a novel sugar − based nonionic Gemini surfactant, APG − EGDE, was specifically synthesized for subsurface application. APG − EGDE features hydrophilic groups derived from two glucose molecules, offering high biodegradability and excellent resistance to low temperatures and ionic interference. The hydrophobic groups were comprised of two long and straight hydrocarbon chains, providing a low critical micelle concentration (CMC: 0.07 mmol/L) and reduced surface/interfacial tension (4.0 mN/m with PCE). And the ether bond (C − O − C) acted as a linker group. Remarkably, homogeneous solutions did not precipitate under extreme groundwater environmental conditions such as high salinity (10 % NaCl or CaCl 2 ) and low temperature (<0 ℃). At 1 g/L, the adsorption loss by medium sand of APG − EGDE was minimal, with only 0.0058 mg/g. APG − EGDE exhibited superior PCE solubilization capacity (10052 mg/L at 40 g/L), exceeding conventional surfactants such as SDS and Tween − 80. One − dimensional column flushing confirmed high PCE removal efficiency after 10 pore volumes. These results showed the Gemini surfactant APG − EGDE serving as a superior surfactant alternative for remediating DNAPL − contaminated aquifers.

Hazardous waste dechlorination reduces the potential of creating dioxins during the incineration process. To investigate the salt effect on waste dechlorination, molten hydroxides with a low melting temperature were utilized for the pre-dechlorination and decomposition of chlorine-containing organic wastes (COWs) including trichlorobenzene (TCB), perchloroethylene , hexachlorobenzene and chlordane . The results showed that a eutectic mixture of caustic sodium and potassium hydroxides (41 wt.% NaOH and 59 wt.% KOH) led to a low melting point below 300°C and a relatively high chlorine retention efficiency (CRE) with TCB as a representative COWs. The amounts of hydroxides, reaction time, and temperature all had notable influence on CRE. When the mass ratio of hydroxides to TCB reached 30:1, approximately 98.1% of the TCB was destroyed within 2.5 hr at 300°C with CRE of 71.6%. According to the residue analysis , the shapes of reaction residues were irregular with particles becoming swollen and porous. The benzene ring and C–Cl bonds disappeared, while carboxyl groups formed in the residues. The stripped chlorine was retained and condensed to form chloride salts, and the relative abundance of the chloride ions associated with the mass of TCB in residues increased from 0 to 75.0% within the 2.5 hr reaction time. The observed concentration of dioxins in residues was 5.6 ngTEQ/kg. A reaction pathway and possible additional reactions that occur in this dechlorination system were proposed. Oxidizing agents may attack TCB and facilitate hydrogenation/dechlorination reactions, making this process a promising and environmentally friendly approach for chlorine-containing organic waste treatment .

Methyl sec-butyl ether (MSBE), a volatile organic compound, poses significant risks to both environmental safety and human health. Consequently, developing efficient sensors for the rapid and accurate detection of trace levels of MSBE is essential. In this study, we synthesized mesoporous CeO2 nanoparticles using carbon quantum dots as templates, resulting in the development of a highly sensitive cataluminescence sensor system. This sensor demonstrated an impressive linear detection range of 0.50–20 mg l−1 (R2 = 0.998) and a low detection limit of 0.08 mg l−1, coupled with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3. We applied the mesoporous CeO2 nanoparticle sensor to measure MSBE levels in various environments, including a volatile medicine reagent freezer, laboratory gas, and a storage cabinet, which yielded concentrations of 2.07, 1.38, and 3.96 mg l−1, respectively. The sensor also exhibited excellent recovery rates, ranging from 91.1% to 110%, with relative standard deviations (RSD, n = 5) from 3.4% to 8.7%, indicating reliable performance. Additionally, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was employed to elucidate the mechanism underlying the developed cataluminescence sensor. This study introduces a versatile approach for designing gas sensors for MSBE that not only exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity but also significantly enhances their potential applications in both industrial and environmental monitoring.

HgTe colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising for infrared detection due to their broad spectral response, high photosensitivity, and potential for low-cost fabrication. However, conventional synthesis methods struggle to achieve precise size control, narrow size distribution, high monodispersity, and tetrahedral morphology. In this work, we introduce diphenylphosphine (DPP) to enhance the reactivity of the telluride precursor, promoting uniform nucleation and allowing precise control over CQDs morphology, size, and monodispersity. A dual regulation strategy based on synthesis temperature and thiol ligand alkyl chain length is further employed to enable controllable growth of CQDs in both size and shape. The organic-inorganic heterojunction short-wave infrared photodetector constructed using HgTe CQDs layers obtained via this method and an organic hole transport layer of PEDOT:PSS exhibits a responsivity of 652 mA/W at 1650 nm and a detection rate of 7.88 × 10 11 Jones at room temperature. This work presents a novel, cost-effective, and scalable strategy for synthesizing HgTe CQDs, laying a solid foundation for the development and commercialization of high-performance infrared photodetectors.

s HgTe quantum dots (QDs) are promising for infrared optoelectronic applications due to their size-tunable bandgap and solution-processable nature. However, conventional synthesis methods often result in aggregation and instability, limiting their practical use. This study presents a strategy to improve the dispersibility of HgTe QDs by using mercuric iodide (HgI₂) as the mercury precursor and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) in combination with oleic acid as the ligands during the quenching stage. Comparative experiments showed that MPA-treated QDs exhibited improved dispersion, with a reduced hydrodynamic diameter (~135 nm) compared to those without MPA (~180 nm). Additionally, photoconductive devices fabricated with MPA-treated QDs demonstrated significantly better performance. These devices exhibited higher switching ratios and responsivity, reflecting the improved dispersion and surface stabilization of the QDs, which enhanced charge transport efficiency and reduced recombination losses. This work provides an effective approach for controlling dispersion and enhancing the performance of HgTe QDs for infrared optoelectronics.
