With the explosive growth of electrocommunication and portable electronics, exploiting the superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with the desired flexibility and lightweight is critical. Herein, the waste carbon fibers (CFs) eco-friendly recycling strategy and a facile and cost-effective paper-making method are utilized to prepare recycled carbon fiber felt (rCFF) decorated with cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) (rCFF/CPAM). Profiting from the inherent excellent conductivity of lossless recycled carbon fibers (rCFs) and optimum rCFs dispersion in CPAM, the abundant efficient pathways are constructed in the 3D interconnected rCFF/CPAM networks, resulting in the rCFF/CPAM exhibits a remarkable electrical conductivity of 140.06 S/m, a highly efficient EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 66.15 dB and an exceptional of SE A /SE T ratio of 83.8 % at 0.875 mm. More importantly, the felt also contains the advantages of outstanding flexibility, lightweight and sustainable re-utilization. In summary, this strategy provides an economical and practical way to manufacture the superior performance rCFF/CAPM, but also promotes the high value recycle and reuse of waste carbon fiber resources.

In recent years, the demand for efficient and flexible electromagnetic (EMI) shielding has increased dramatically to ensure the stability of electronic devices and protect the body from electromagnetic radiation due to the development of wearable electronics and fifth-generation network communication(5G). Nonwovens made from short-cut recycled carbon fibre have shown potential for use in the EMI shielding area due to their economic and ecological benefits. However, achieving lightweight, high-efficiency, and flexible electromagnetic shielding remains challenging. To address this problem, we constructed a lightweight multifunctional recycled carbon fibre (rCF)/ Ti 3 C 2 T x / Poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) nonwoven fabric with double-layered structure, high electromagnetic shielding efficiency (EMI SE), photothermal effect and good Joule heating performance via simple double vacuum-assisted filtration and hot-pressing strategy. Different sizes of Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes were prepared using improved mild etching, ultrasonic and vortex fluid power-focused delamination (PFD) methods. The rCF/Ti 3 C 2 T x /PEDOT: PSS (MPrCF) nonwoven fabric showed superior conductivity (96.18 S/cm), a favourable EMI shielding efficiency of 63.3 dB, and excellent absolute shielding efficiency of up to 13,900 dB cm 2 *g −1 with only 0.25–0.35 mm thickness due to the unique porous double layered lamination structure and high conductivity. In addition, the new MPrCF veil exhibited superior joule heating and photothermal performance with a saturated temperature of up to 290.2 °C at 5v voltage and 112.3 °C at 300 mW/m 2 light intensity. This new rCF veil shows great potential applications in composite reinforcement fields as a lightweight and scalable electromagnetic shielding material.

The spent carbon cathode (SCC) is a hazardous solid waste from aluminum production. It has an abundant carbon source and a unique graphitic carbon layer structure, making it a valuable waste for recycling. This paper uses alkaline and acid leaching methods to report a straightforward way of extracting recovered carbon (RC) from SCC as anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The results show that alkaline and acid leaching conditions at 70 °C with 1 M NaOH and HCl solution individually in 6 h and a liquid-solid ratio of 20:1 can result in RC with up to 94.63% carbon content than 49.38% in SCC, exhibiting a typical graphite structure. SCC and RC materials are obtained after calcination at 400 °C in an inert atmosphere and used as anode materials (SCC-400 and RC-400). In this paper, The initial charging specific capacities are 490.0 mA h g −1 , 195.4 mA h g −1 , and 423.2 mA h g −1 and initial coulombic efficiencies (ICE) are 67.8%, 78.9%, and 72.0% of RC-400, SCC, and SCC-400. RC-400 also shows excellent capacity retention and impedance values. This exciting finding provides a viable, non-hazardous, and resourceful method for treating and disposing of SCC from aluminum electrolysis.

Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) possess pronounced anisotropic properties, necessitating advancements in through-thickness electrical conductivity and other functionalities without compromising mechanical integrity. MXenes, as an emerging family of two-dimensional nanomaterials, have demonstrated significant potential for enhancement modification in this area. However, achieving uniform distribution and effective utilization on a large scale with low filler content has posed a significant challenge. Herein, a highly lightweight, flexible, and functional Ti 3 C 2 T x / poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) /Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) reclaimed carbon fiber (rCF) veil reinforced plastics (MPA-rCFRPs) was fabricated through large-scale vacuum-assisted filtration and autoclave technology. The modified MPA-rCFRPs have exhibited substantial improvements in electromagnetic shielding with MXene additive amounts as low as 0.24 %–1.07 %, increasing the electro-magnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) to 87.12 dB, improved by 350.02 %. Remarkably, the through-thickness electrical conductivity of MPA-rCFRPs exhibited a 767.14 % improvement, escalating from 19.73 S/m to 151.41 S/m. Meanwhile, the modified composites have exhibited enhanced photothermal, electrothermal, and flame-retardant properties, and the above improvements have not shown a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the material. This work represents a practical solution for the construction of large-scale MXene-based carbon fiber composites and opens the door to functional reutilization of rCF materials.

Polylactic acid (PLA), a rapidly emerging bio-based plastic, faces challenges in reinforcement due to its weak mechanical properties and poor interface adhesion with carbon fibre surfaces. This study introduces an MXene/recycled carbon fibre (rCF) reinforced PLA 3D printing material, prepared through electrostatic self-assembly of MXene and recycled carbon fibre. MXene addition significantly enhances the fibre-substrate interface bonding in fibre-reinforced PLA filaments. This results in the printed parts displaying enhanced toughness, the flexural strength achieved of 105.45 MPa, modules of 5.98Gpa, and notched impact strength of 7.12 kJ/m 2 , realizing 15.6 %, 112.1 %, and 31.8 % improvements, respectively in comparison to pure PLA. Additionally, the modified PLA demonstrates absorption-dominated superior electromagnetic shielding performance. This research offers a viable approach for enhancing recycled carbon fibre-reinforced thermoplastic PLA and insights into designing sustainable, structurally, and functionally integrated composites.

As widely used lightweight and high-strength materials, the sustainable development of thermosetting composites is hampered by their limited recyclability. Developing simple methods for the efficient and upgraded recycling is desirable but challenging. Herein, carbon fiber reinforced degradable thermosetting resin composites were prepared, and the effects of resin degradation process and its derivatives on the sustainable recycling of carbon fiber were studied. Through the tunable departure and re-adsorption of degradation derivatives in cleaning post-treatment, recycled carbon fibers achieved not only non-destructive recovery but also simultaneously improvements in tensile strength from 3.0 GPa to 3.7 GPa and surface energy from 47.2 mN/m to 66.7 mN/m. The adhered derivatives, rich in -NH- and oxygen-containing groups, exhibited good interactions with the fiber surface and epoxy resin. Benefiting from this, the inter laminar shear strength of recycled carbon fibers reinforced epoxy composite effectively improved 24.3 %. In this work, directly reusing resin degradation products for the recycling of reinforced fibers was proposed and the key role of the composition and distribution of degradation products in recycling properties was revealed. The strategy of integrating characteristics of components to enhance material recyclability is expected to have widespread applicability, promoting the sustainable transition for thermosetting composites.

The widespread usage of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites imposes serious challenges in disposing of end-of-life and wasted products. Pyrolysis recycling has become an efficient strategy to decompose the resin matrix and extract the fiber, while the bottleneck lies in maintaining the structural integrity and physicochemical properties of the recycled fibers, along with reconstructing corresponding composites with performance efficiency. In this work, a two-step pyrolysis strategy is demonstrated to decompose the resin matrix and remove the carbon residues without damaging the internal structure of the recycled carbon fiber felts (rCFFs), followed by surface modification to facilitate the reconstruction of rCFFs-reinforced phenolic resin composites. The composites achieve remarkable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance in the X band with maximum EMI shielding effectiveness value of 70.5 dB, along with impressive flame-retardant performance under a high heat flux of 50 kW/m 2 . Besides, more than 80 % EMI shielding effectiveness is maintained after 10 pyrolyzing cycles by optimizing the pyrolysis parameters. Catering to maintaining the intrinsic properties of the recycled carbon fibers by proposing comprehensive recycling strategy, the synthesis of rCFFs-based materials is of great significance for promoting the substitution of pristine EMI shielding counterparts and the practical reutilization of carbon fiber resources.

Both environmental and economic factors have driven the development of degradable resin for carbon fiber (CF) recycling under mild conditions. However, the vast majority of thermosetting materials are difficult to recycle. This paper presents bio-based polyimine vitrimers to fully recycle the CF. The effect of vitrimers fine structures on the thermal, mechanical, solvent resistance, and degradation properties is carefully investigated. The tensile strength at break and Young's Modulus of pure polyimine vitrimers reach ≈80.3 MPa and 2.89 GPa. Importantly, the mechanical property of isophoronediamine-based polyimine vitrimers/two-layers CF exhibits a slightly inferior value to that of bisphenol A epoxy. Polyimine vitrimers are easily degradable under acid solution at 60 °C for 24 h. The surface morphology and chemical structure of CF are not changed after recycling. This work on mildly degradable polyimine vitrimers from vanillin and readily recycling of CF is desirable for the development of eco-friendly CF composites and lignin functional materials.

For recyclable carbon fiber-reinforced composites (CFRC), epoxy vitrimers are frequently utilized as matrix. However, there are a number of limitations on these vitrimer matrices, including a relatively low glass transition temperature ( T g ), insufficient strength, and flammability. Creating epoxy vitrimers with improved strength, high T g , and fire-safe properties are the aim of this work. For usage in recyclable and fire-safe CFRC, the vitrimer was created specifically. By curing bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether with a vanillin-derived imine hardener, and incorporating 10-(2,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-10-hydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO-HQ) for reactive flame-retardant, we achieved high-performance epoxy vitrimers with impressive tensile strength (>80 MPa), T g (≥135 °C), and flame retardancy as well as excellent reprocessability. The vitrimer, EVHQ2.0 (22 wt% DOPO-HQ), showed excellent flame retardancy (LOI: 32.5%, V-0 rating in UL-94). Using EVHQ2.0 as the matrix, we obtained CFRC, with remarkable mechanical performance (flexural strength: 480.4 MPa, flexural modulus: 31.7 GPa). Moreover, the CFRC demonstrated a high level of fire safety, achieving a V-0 rating and possessing a LOI value of 35.5%. Additionally, we also realized non-destructive recovery for valuable carbon cloth through chemically decomposing the vitrimer network using additional diamines. What's particularly noteworthy is that by reassembling the deteriorated vitrimer with reclaimed carbon fiber, the composite can be completely recycled. A carbon fiber reinforced composite with mechanical characteristics similar to the primary composite is created by this method. This research breakthrough holds significant implications for the development of recyclable composites with fire-resistant properties and improved mechanical performance.

Recyclable carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to the combined merits of excellent mechanical and thermal properties, recyclability and reprocessability. This paper reports on the successful preparation of closed-loop recyclable CFRP by in-situ polymerization and dynamic cross-linking (ISPDC) technology. The SEM, XPS and monofilament tensile curves were measured to investigate the morphology, chemical details, and mechanical properties of the recycled carbon fiber (CF); the chemical structure of the degraded resin was further characterized and analyzed according to the NMR and FTIR spectra. The obtained results show that under mild acidic conditions, the CFRP was degraded to high-quality recycled CF and linear polymer with methacrylic acid units, which can be used to prepare regenerated CFRP. In addition, due to the dynamic feature of the hemiacetal ester structure in the CFRP matrix, the CFRP also exhibited multiple functions, such as rapid welding, reprocessing, shape shifting, and self-healing, as well as the extremely long shelf life of composite prepregs . Our analysis of the recycling and dynamic exchange processes indicates that the strategy of embedding a releasable linker is dominant for the preparation of closed-loop recyclable and multifunctional CFRP.

With the continuous increase in the use of carbon fiber composites, the composite waste generated during production and application will always have an impact on the environment. By pyrolyzing carbon fiber composites, carbon fibers can be recycled, which is also beneficial for the sustainable development of carbon fiber composites. Compared to commercial carbon fiber (CFs), the performance of recycled carbon fiber (rCFs) is somewhat reduced, and it is generally mainly used as a low value filler. In order to enhance the application value of recycled fibers and broaden their application fields, we developed a simple, eco-friendly modification technique to construct supramolecular networks on the surface of rCFs. Evaluate the application effect of carbon fiber by preparing composite materials with tannic acid cured epoxy resin (TE). In comparison with rCFs composite samples, the supramolecular network modified rCF composites can achieve performance improvements through synergistic non covalent and covalent interface interactions: mechanical strength increased by 27.01 %, shape memory storage entropy energy density increased by 8.95 %, and structural stability was maintained under high temperature conditions. This work provides a new technological approach for the widespread application of recycled carbon fibers.
