Mineralization of CO 2 to minerals like calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) has been considered as an effective approach to combat global warming. In this paper, Ca 2+ ions were firstly extracted from waste carbide slag, and then facilely transformed to vaterite CaCO 3 via disperse bubbling carbonization method assisted with an air stone. By optimizing the reaction conditions, highly mono-dispersed vaterite CaCO 3 microspheres (VCMs) were obtained. These microspheres consisted of aggregated CaCO 3 nanocrystals , bearing a mesoporous structure. As a proof-of-concept, these mesoporous microspheres were utilized for dye adsorption and electromagnetic (EM) microwave absorption. For the former, the VCMs were used to adsorb Congo red, yielding a fast adsorption time of 9 min and a high adsorption capacity of 138.77 mg/g. For the latter, EM microwave dielectric parameters were measured, and dye-adsorbed VCMs exhibited better microwave-absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss of −43.2 dB, about 3 times of pristine vaterite. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of solid-waste-derived VCMs as microwave absorbent and dye adsorbent. Considering the low-cost, eco-friendly and facile preparation and effective utilization of VCMs, our work provides a promising strategy for large-scale carbon capture, solid waste utilization, and treatment of microwave and wastewater pollution.

Solid wastes, including incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA), waste bentonite, and waste glass powder (WGP), were recycled and sintered at a low temperature (680 °C) to produce lightweight aggregates (WSA). WGP acted as a fluxing agent to significantly lower sintering temperature of 1000–1200 °C in other studies. WSA demonstrated an excellent mechanical strength of 3.76 MPa. The adsorbent dosage, initial pH, kinetics and isotherm on heavy metals adsorption were evaluated in batch adsorption experiments. The isothermal data exhibited a good correlation with the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was approximately 9.26 mg/g at 296 K. Pb(II) removal was dominated by precipitation and cation exchange. Breakthrough curves were determined for fixed-bed adsorption. At 50% breakthrough, the maximum adsorption capacity was 1.82 mg/g. The WSA after heavy metals adsorption were then reused to replace river sand (10–50%) in producing lightweight mortars. The solidification of spent WSA in the lightweight mortars could significantly reduce the leaching of Pb(II) by 98.5%. Moreover, the reuse of spent WSA resulted in low density and low thermal conductivity of cement mortars. This study demonstrates total waste management for municipal solid wastes: upcycling of waste–utilization–permanently stored as construction materials.

As a promising anode material for next-generation high-energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), one of the main technical issues for silicon (Si) electrodes is the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). By a pre-lithiation process, preparation of lithium–silicon (Li–Si) alloy electrodes can efficiently improve the ICE, thus leading to excellent electrochemical performance. Herein, with solid wastes as precursors, we report a cost-efficient approach for the fabrication of Li3.25Si anode materials via simple magnesiothermic reduction and then mechanical alloy reaction methods, combining the advantages of low-cost and high ICE. The prepared Li3.25Si@acetylene black (Li3.25Si@A) electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a high reversible capacity of 1138.9 mA h g−1 over 90 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1 and its ICE is as high as 107.7%, which is superior to that of the commercial Li3.25Si@A electrode. With a simple and low-cost manufacturing process and high ICE, the fabrication process will be definitely meaningful in achieving low-cost and high-capacity anode materials with a prolonged cycle life.

A unique core–shell structured pitch-pyrolyzed carbon-coated porous Si/SiO x /needle coke (Si/SiO x / NC@C) nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized via a low-temperature aluminothermic reduction combined with a scalable spray-drying and following carbonization processes. The fabrication of silicon-based materials in Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites derived from high silica-containing silica fume powders enables effective utilization of industrial solid waste. The Si/SiO x nanoparticles in Si/SiO x /NC@C with abundant internal nanovoids are anchored on the surface of needle coke matrices, forming Si/SiO x -needle coke dual-phase cores, which are wrapped by a thin pitch-pyrolyzed amorphous carbon layer. The synergetic combination of these inherent advantages, such as high electroconductivity, porosity, amorphous/crystalline mixture structure, and high-valence SiO x residues, remarkably enhances the composite’s structural stability and buffers internal structure stress induced by alloying/dealloying of Si. The Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites demonstrate exceptional electrochemical stability, exhibiting a specific reversible capacity of 771.5 mAh g⁻ 1 with minimal capacity decay (~ 0.06% per cycle) over 500 cyclic repetitions at an elevated current density of 200 mA g⁻ 1 . Rate capability tests show that the Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites achieve a high capacity of 660.25 mAh g −1 even when subjected to the highest current of 3200 mA g −1 . More notably, this work provides a facile and promising economical route for the scalable industrial production of high-performance Si-needle coke anode materials for future LIBs from industrial solid waste.

Residues of Tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in water can cause monumental damage to the environment and human health. Accumulating and landfilling decarbonized coal gasification fine slag (DGFS) leads to the waste of resources and environmental pollution. Based on the principle of Treating Waste with Waste, a Fenton-like catalyst (DAPC) for the catalytic degradation of TCH in water was prepared using DGFS as raw material by one-step acid leaching. The composition, micromorphology and surface functional groups of DGFS and DAPC were analyzed, and the catalytic degradation effect and cycling performance of DAPC catalyst on TCH were investigated. The results showed that the specific surface area of DAPC is 191.20 m 2 /g, which is nearly 40 times higher than that of before acid leaching. The presence of abundant polar functional groups, such as hydroxy and siloxy, on the surface of the catalyst provides active sites that facilitate the adhesion of TCH to the DAPC catalyst surface.. The degradation efficiency of TCH was 88.30% after 3 h under the optimal conditions (DAPC: 5 g/L, H 2 O 2 : 2 mL) and 83.68% of the initial value after four cycles, demonstrating excellent catalytic and cycling performance. Using DGFS as the raw material for a Fenton-like catalyst can reduce production costs, enhance catalyst activity and prevent iron sludge pollution. This study presents a new approach to treating TCH pollutants and utilising DGFS effectively. In the future, we can modify the surface of DAPC to improve its catalytic efficiency and explore its general applicability by using it to degrade other pollutants in water.

This study presents an innovative approach for preparing full solid-waste coal slime-based lightweight porous ceramics with high mechanical strength through optimized foam-gelcasting technology. The Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA) was employed to characterize the distribution of key components within the coal slime system. Thermodynamic simulations, utilizing Factsage software, coupled with TG-DSC and XRD analyses, were conducted to elucidate the compositional transformations and crystalline phase formation mechanisms of complex mineral systems during high-temperature sintering. Systematic investigations were conducted on the influence law of slurry pH on slurry stability, establishing the qualitative relationships between sintering temperature (1150–1300 °C) and the pore architecture and mechanical performance of ceramics. Optimal results achieved at pH = 10 and 1300 °C demonstrated exceptional porosity (69.5 %), low thermal conductivity (0.18 W/(m·K)), and remarkable compressive strength (12.84 MPa). 3D rendering and pore size analysis revealed favorable pore parameters, with an average pore size of 54.87 μm, surpassing conventional solid-waste derived ceramics. The developed material exhibits promising engineering applications in thermal insulation and lightweight construction, providing a high-value solution for coal slime utilization.
