At present, most of the reported carbon dots (CDs) are still dispersed in the solvent in liquid state . However, solid-state CDs cannot fundamentally prevent the aggregation-caused quenching effect (ACQ), which seriously affects their application. Herein, hydrophobic solid-state luminescent CDs with typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior were synthesized by simple solvothermal method using dithiosalicylic acid (DSTA) and acetic acid. The AIE behavior of CDs is mainly due to the presence of disulfide bonds, which restrict the intramolecular rotation of CDs surface groups around them, thus generating solid-state fluorescence (SSF) in long-wave emission. In addition, by using MA , urea and sulfonamide to tune the emission behavior of CDs, red, yellow and green AIE CDs named R-CDs, Y-CDs and G-CDs were obtained successfully. The as-prepared CDs powder was further applied to fabricate multi-color light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on UV chips. The fabricated tri-color LED devices can maintain high color purity and color rendering index (CRI). More importantly, the Correlated color temperature (CCT) of the three LED devices was located in the warm light area, which could effectively reduce visual fatigue. Finally, we applied three kinds of AIE CDs in fingerprint detection and effectively displayed the details.

Ozone is widely used in air sterilization, food and medical disinfection in modern society, but high ozone levels in the living environment are considered harmful and have been associated with various respiratory diseases. Therefore, quick detection for ozone of part per million (ppm) levels is significant for living environment and an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) compound has been synthesized. Due to an intrinsic excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, this “off-on” probe can fluoresce in the solid-state. This intrinsic fluorescent property makes it easy to detect lower concentration of ozone since the reaction product of probe can avoid being affected by pH and solubility through luminescence in the solid-state. The limit of gaseous ozone detection can be as low as 0.28 ppm for obviously distinguishable fluorescence colour from blue to cyan, showing that the probe can be useful for detecting ozone without the need of elaborate equipment.

The findings of the research indicate that coal-derived carbon dots (CDs), produced through top-down methods, exist as a blend of graphene quantum dots (GQDs), carbon quantum dots (CQDs), and carbon nanodots (CNDs). Within this mixture, numerous individual particles are dispersed, each containing multiple sp 2 -carbon domains, suggesting the presence of multiple fluorescent centers of varying sizes. These fluorescent centers scatter photon energy, leading to a wide full width at half maximum (FWHM >80 nm). To tackle this issue, the study significantly improves the fluorescence efficiency of coal-based CDs by employing a nitrogen-doping approach. Additionally, these nitrogen-doped CDs are combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to formulate secure inks exhibiting solid-state fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties, showcasing their potential for anti-counterfeiting applications in safeguarding important documents and artworks.

Carbon dots (CDots)-based solid-state luminescent materials have important applications in light-emitting devices owing to their outstanding optical properties. However, it still remains a challenge to develop multiple-color-emissive solid-state CDots, due to the serious self-quenching of the CDots in the aggregation or solid state. Herein, a one-step synthesis of multiple-color-emissive solid-state silica-coated CDots (silica/CDots) composites by controlling CDots loading fraction and composite morphology to realize the adjustment of emitting color is reported. The emission of resultant silica/CDots composites shifts from blue to orange with the photoluminescence quantum yields of 57.9%, 34.3%, and 32.7% for blue, yellow, and orange emitting, respectively. Furthermore, the yellow emitting silica/CDots composites exhibit an excellent fluorescence thermal stability, and further have been applied to fabricate white-light-emitting devices with a high color rendering index of above 80.

Solid-state fluorescent carbon quantum dots (QDs) can be used for the encryption of security information. Controlling the dispersion and aggregation of the QDs is crucial for switching their solid-state fluorescence “on” and “off.” The use of polymers has been proposed to slightly separate the QDs inside aggregates to trigger their fluorescence. However, the complex interactions between the QDs and flexible polymer chains make this process challenging. Here, fluorine-modified carbon nanodots (FCDs) were used in a solution as the printing ink. After printing, the FCDs were aggregated on paper via hydrogen bonds, thereby quenching the fluorescence. After a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) treatment, the FCDs exhibited yellow solid-state fluorescence due to an increased interdot spacing. The fluorescence intensity and emission wavelength could be tuned by varying the molecular weight and quantity of PEG used. Finally, we demonstrated a high-resolution encryption and decryption system based on the PEG-triggered fluorescence of FCDs.

It is attractive and encouraging to develop new fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with excellent optical properties and promising applications prospects. Herein, highly-efficient green emissive CDs ( m -CDs) with a high quantum yield (QY) of 71.7% in water are prepared through a facile solvothermal method. Interestingly, the m -CDs exhibit excellent fluorescence stability in the pH range of 1–9. However, the fluorescence intensity of the m -CDs is almost completely quenched as the pH is increased from 9 to 10. The mechanism of the unique pH-responsive behavior is discussed in detail and a plausible mechanism is proposed. Owing to the unique pH-responsive behavior, the m-CDs are used as a on-off fluorescent probe for water quality identification. By combining the reversible pH-ultrasensitive optical properties of the m-CDs in the pH range of 9–10 with the glucose oxidase-mimicking (GOx-mimicking) ability of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs), glucose can be quantitatively detected. Finally, two environment-friendly starch-based solid-state fluorescence materials (powder and film) are developed through green preparation routes.

Solid-state multicolor carbon dots (CDs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their wide applications. However, the fluorescence quenching of solid-state CDs occurs due to the π-π stacking or energy transfer between adjacent carbon dots. In addition, it is difficult to observe the afterglow of solid-state CDs due to their self-quenching and deliquescence. Here, electrochemically prepared multicolor CDs emit the solid-state fluorescence and afterglow emission with lifetimes up to 657 ms by embedding the CDs into urea matrix. More importantly, the surface amino groups and C = O bonds regulate the afterglow emission of CDs from phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence at room temperature. Surface amino groups of multicolor CDs can enhance the spin–orbit coupling, increase the intersystem crossing (ISC) and reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). Thus it can promote the generation of triple excited states and regulate the singlet–triplet energy gap value from 0.384 to 0.026 eV. The formation of covalent bonds stabilizes the single and triple excited states and inhibits the non-radiative recombination, which achieves the enhanced fluorescence and visual afterglow of multicolor CDs. The fluorescence and afterglow CDs can be applied to dual signal imaging and anti-counterfeiting, which broadens the practical applications for solid-state CDs via surface state modulation.

In this work, by using a flexible tricarboxylate ligand 5-(4-carboxybenzyloxy) isophthalic acid (H 3 L), a novel pillar-layered Mn–organic framework, namely, [(CH 3 CH 2 ) 2 NH 2 ][Mn 3 (HL)L(A C ) 2 ] ( SQNU-23 , SQNU = Shangqiu Normal University), was synthesized by using a DEF/HAc solvent system. In SQNU-23 , each S-shaped Mn-O chain is interconnected by two bridging modes of organic ligand to form a 3D pillar-layered framework with 1D rectangular channels. The solid-state fluorescence of SQNU-23 exhibits a significant red shift of about 140 nm compared to that of organic ligand. Moreover, SQNU-23 as a luminescent thermometer exhibits good linear dependence in the wide temperature range (100 to 300 K).

Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit vivid photoluminescence in solutions, but show no or weak photoluminescent emissions in solid state. In this paper, we prepared a polyurethane (PU)/CD composite with solid-state fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation by anchoring oil-soluble CDs in a crosslinked PU matrix through chemical reaction. This polymer composite has high robustness, transmittance, and organic solvent resistance, as well as good stretching ability. Interestingly, since the chemical reaction between the CDs and the PU matrix changes the UV absorption feature of the CDs, the PU/CD composite has blue (near 405 nm), cyan (near 470 nm), and green (near 495 nm) fluorescent emissions, even though the CD solution just possesses green (near 530 nm) fluorescent emissions. This PU/CD composite shows the possibility of application in optoelectronic devices.

In this research, four CPDs with different solid-state fluorescence were successfully synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal condensation cross-linking carbonization (HCCC) approach employing pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and ethylenediamine (EDA) as the polymerization monomers. It was proposed that there are two competing reaction pathways in the formation stage of polymers, and regulation of reaction conditions can affect this competitive relationship to acquire CPDs with different solid-state fluorescence. The morphology and surface structure of four kinds of CPDs were characterized in detail using several characterization techniques. These four CPDs not only possessed small particle sizes of 1.83–2.36 nm, but also exhibited excellent fluorescence stability. Results displayed that CPDs-1, CPDs-2, CPDs-3, and CPDs-4 solid powders exhibited fluorescent yellow, yellow, brownish-yellow, and brown fluorescence under 365 nm UV lamp, which could fabricate fluorescent films and apply in LED devices. Interestingly, it was noticed that the modulation of the content of CPDs in CPDs/PVA composite films or the surface of LED chips could greatly adjust the color of composite film and LED light emission. In sensing studies, CPDs-2 could serve as fluorescence probe to construct a sensitive and selective sensor for the detection of luteolin, the linear range was 0–100 µM and the detection limit was 30 nmol/L. In practical sample analysis, the recovery rate and the RSD were 94.96 %–107 % and 0.54 %–3.52 %, respectively. In addition, CPDs-3 was used to construct a fluorescence sensing platform for the detection of water in the range of 0 % to 90 %. Moreover, as a potential nano-fluorescent probe, CPDs-2 showed low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility in cancer cell imaging research and plant seed growth processes.

Exploiting solid powder fluorescence holds significant potential in diverse domains including medicine and forensics. Conventional fingerprint detection methods often fall short due to low contrast, sensitivity, and high toxicity. To addressing these challenges, we present a novel method for latent fingerprint detection using fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) encapsulated into conventional or mesoporous SiO 2 colloidal spheres (CD@SiO 2 or CDs@ m -SiO 2 ) through a surface functionalization-assisted cooperative assembly process. The synthesized monodisperse CDs@SiO 2 and CDs@ m -SiO 2 spheres, with tuning particle size, adjustable porosity and pore size, and highly dispersed CDs, exhibit improved fingerprint visibility and contrast on various substrates such as glass, stainless steel, and plastic. CDs located in SiO 2 with excellent affinity effectively avoids their solid-state self-quenching phenomenon, which, coupling with mesoporous SiO 2 shell, maximumly retains their fluorescence properties. Our method demonstrates a high contrast, selectivity, and sensitivity in fingerprint detection, offering an environmentally friendly and healthy alternative to conventional techniques, and showcasing a facile route to novel solid-state CDs-based fluorescent materials for forensic analysis.

Carbon dots (CDs), one of the most promising luminescent nanomaterials, have attracted widespread concern due to their unique optoelectronic properties and widespread application. However, mass production of solid-state CDs with highly efficient full-color emission has rarely been reported, severely limiting their practical application in solid-state lighting and displays. Here, using an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) strategy, full-color solid-state fluorescent (SSF) CDs with quantum yields (QYs) of up to 55.3–27.9% have been prepared on a kilogram scale through one-step microwave-assisted pyrolysis of the same precursors. Detailed structure–property studies demonstrate that the SSF of CDs is derived from the suppression of surface carboxyl group motions and the decrease of the non-radiative rate in their aggregated state, and that their tunable emission is attributed to the excessive fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) induced by the increasing number of aromatic rings on CD surfaces. Therefore, these CDs exhibit both the AIE enhancement and red shift throughout the entire visible spectrum in the solid state. Finally, because of their excellent AIE properties, these highly efficient SSF CDs have been applied to pattern encryption, large-area luminescent fibrous membranes (LFMs), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and fingerprint detection.
