High fixation and low energy consumption in reactive dyeing of cotton through combining the dye molecule design and environment-friendly dyeing technique

Yang Jingjing,Yang Xinyi,Wu Cheng,Chen Xin,Huang Fang,Lv Jingchun

To explore methods for achieving clean application of reactive dyes from the source, three polyfunctional reactive dyes (YMR-1–YMR-3) using different diamine compounds as bridge groups were developed. The three dyes showed different solubility in water, which was 230, 100, and 160 g/L, respectively, at 25 ℃. The three reactive dyes were used to dye cotton fabrics through an energy-saving cold pad-batch dyeing technique. The factors influencing on the dyeing performance in the cold pad-batch dyeing technique were also comprehensively studied. The maximum fixation values of YMR-1, YMR-2, and YMR-3 were 94.19, 90.79, and 92.18%, respectively. Levelness of the cotton fabrics dyed with the three dyes was investigated and further discussed. The results showed that the dyed cotton fabrics exhibited good levelness with a low color difference value (Δ E  < 0.40). The dry rubbing fastness of the cotton fabrics dyed with the three dyes was grade 4, and the corresponding wet rubbing fastness was grade 3 or 2–3. The staining fastness of the dyed cotton fabrics was grade 4–5 or 4. The light fastness of the cotton fabric dyed with YMR-1 was grade 4, and that of YMR-2 and YMR-3 was grade 3.

Exploring the requirements of reactive dyes in eco-friendly dyeing process: The relationship between dye structure, dyeing properties, and eco-friendly dyeing techniques

Jingjing Yang,Cheng Wu,Huang Fang,Xin Chen,Jingchun Lv

Herein, four heterobifunctional brilliant yellow dyes containing different numbers of sulfonic groups (MRY-1–MRY-4) were designed to investigate the relationship between the dye structure, dyeing properties, and the eco-friendly dyeing technique. The solubility, stability, substantivity, reactivity, and colorimetric properties of the dyes were studied. The substantivity of the dyes was significantly reduced when the diazo component of the chromophores contained two sulfonic groups. The four dyes were then used to dye cotton fabrics using eco-friendly low liquor ratio dyeing and cold pad-batch dyeing techniques. For low liquor ratio dyeing, when the liquor ratio was 1:6, the fixation rates of MRY-1, MRY-2, and MRY-3 were 84.9 %, 71.1 %, and 75.0 %, respectively. MRY-4 was not suitable for exhaust dyeing but could be used in cold pad-batch dyeing, in which its fixation rate on cotton fabric reached 93.8 %. However, MRY-1 cannot be used to dye cotton by cold pad-batch dyeing due to its low alkali resistance and resulting poor stability. In a similar chromophore structure, increasing the number of sulfonic groups increased the brightness value of the dye but also made the dye greener and bluer. The dry and wet rubbing fastness of cotton dyed with the four reactive dyes was grade 4–5 and 3–4, respectively. The wash fastness to color change and staining reached grades 4 or 4–5, while the light fastness of MRY-1 and MRY-3 was grade 3–4 and that of MRY-2 and MRY-4 was grade 4–5.

Constructing polyfunctional reactive dyes for printing of cotton fabrics with ultra-high fixation and ultra-low staining on the white ground

Yang Jingjing,Zhao Jiyang,Xie Rui,Wu Cheng,Huang Fang

To address the challenges of low fixation and poor resistance to staining on white ground of reactive dyes in the dyeing and printing industry, two new polyfunctional reactive dyes (MFA-1 and MFA-2) were developed. These dyes, which contained m-phenylenediamine derivatives with sulfonic and methyl groups as bridge groups, demonstrated high solubility (above 350 g/L) and low affinity to fibers. Detailed investigations were conducted to understand the factors affecting printing performance. The two dyes exhibited exceptionally high fixations of 94.35% and 95.75%, respectively, on cotton fabrics at a high dye concentration of 5.0%. This represented a 24% and 43% improvement over C.I. Reactive Red 111 and C.I. Reactive Red 120, respectively. Notably, MFA-2 achieved a fixation above 95% even at a higher dye concentration of 10.0%. Additionally, both MFA-1 and MFA-2 showed minimal staining on white ground, with fastness properties of grades 3 and 4, respectively, representing 2–3 grades higher than C.I. Reactive Red 111 and C.I. Reactive Red 120. The mechanism behind the exceptional fixation and low staining properties of these dyes was proposed, suggesting that the unique structure of the bridge group disrupted the co-planarity of the dye molecule and evenly distributed the negative charge in the dye molecule. Furthermore, the cotton fabrics printed with MFA-1 and MFA-2 demonstrated good color uniformity, with low ΔE values of 0.46 and 0.32, respectively. The printed fabrics also exhibited good dry and wet rubbing fastness (grades 4 and 3, respectively), wash fastness (grades 4–5), light fastness (grade 4), and perspiration fastness (grades 4 or 4–5).

Synthesis and properties of poly(styrene-co-maleic acid) macromolecular reactive dyes

Fuchun Wang,Wei Ma,Bingtao Tang,Shufen Zhang

To obtain a new type of macromolecular reactive dye with high fixation and good light fastness, poly(styrene- co -maleic acid) was synthesised by co-polymerisation of styrene and maleic anhydride, then, through nitration, reduction, diazotisation and coupling reaction, novel macromolecular reactive dyes were prepared with a solubility greater than 60 g/L. The dyes were used to dye cotton fabrics; the results showed their fixation was more than 92%, and both the rub and wash fastness of the dyes were good. The light fastness of the red and blue dyes with the ethoxy group on melamine was grade 4, and for the yellow dye reached grade 5. The poly(styrene- co -maleic acid) macromolecular reactive dyes exhibit very good application prospects in practice.

Effect of alkyl chain length of epoxy quaternary ammonium salts on their performance in salt-free neutral dyeing of cotton fibers

Zou Wensheng,Ma Wei,Zhang Shufen

Quaternization of cotton enables its dyeing with anionic dyes and thus makes it possible to dye wool/cotton blends fabrics in one bath. However, research on the impact of the structures of EQASs on the dyeing properties of modified cotton fibers remain limited. In this study, three EQASs with varying alkyl chain lengths—EMAC-4, EMAC-8, and EMAC-10—were synthesized and used to modify cotton fibers. The dyeing properties of the modified cotton fibers were then investigated. As the alkyl chain length increased, the K/S values and fixation ( F% ) of the dyes on modified cotton fibers increased, while the leveling properties were somewhat compromised. When the modifier dosage was the same, EMAC-10 showed the best performance: at 20 g/L, EMAC-10 modified cotton fibers achieved 100% exhaustion ( E% ) and more than 93.4% fixation. Computational simulations revealed that as the alkyl chain length increased, the mobility of reactive dyes decreased, the reactivity of the newly introduced hydroxy groups increased, and the reaction energy barrier with monochloro- s -triazine reactive dyes was reduced. This study enhanced the understanding of the structure-performance relationship of cationic modifiers and provided a feasible direction for the design of efficient and environmentally friendly modifiers for cotton fibers.

Regulation of symmetric polyfunctional reactive red dyes for ultra-high fixation on cellulose fibers in various dyeing and printing techniques

Yang Jingjing,Wu Jiaying,Wu Yanan,Xie Rui,Wu Cheng,Huang Fang

To achieve ultra-high dye fixation on cellulose fibers in various dyeing and printing techniques, the relationship between dye structure, physical properties, application techniques, and dyeing performances of nine symmetric polyfunctional reactive red dyes (MFB-1 to MFB-9) with different bridging groups was investigated. By altering the structure of the bridging group, the solubility of the nine dyes can be modulated within the range of 100–400 g/L, and their substantivity can be controlled from 20 to 90%. Using the pad dyeing technique, the fixations of MFB-1, MFB-3, and MFB-9 on cotton fabrics reached 97.16%, 96.82%, and 94.30%, respectively. The dyed cotton fabrics exhibited good levelness, with color difference values (Δ E ) of less than 0.6. The dry rubbing fastness was grade 4 or 4–5, the wet rubbing fastness was grade 3 or 3–4, and the wash fastness was grade 4 or 4–5. MFB-2 and MFB-7 had the highest fixations on cotton fabrics using the exhaust dyeing technique, with values of 91.86% and 89.85%, respectively. The Δ E values for the dyed fabrics were 0.635 and 0.555, respectively. The dry rubbing fastness was grade 4, while the wet rubbing fastness was rated at either grade 2–3 or 3. The wash fastness was above grade 4. Additionally, MFB-4, MFB-5, and MFB-6 achieved ultra-high fixations of over 95% on cotton fabrics using both pad dyeing and printing techniques. The Δ E values for the dyed cotton fabrics from the pad dyeing technique ranged between 0.4 and 0.6, while the Δ E values for the printed fabrics were around 0.3. In both techniques, the dry rubbing fastness was grade 4 or 4–5, and the wet rubbing fastness was grade 3 or 3–4, with wash fastness rated at grade 4–5. MFB-8 achieved a fixation of 89.04% on cotton fabrics in cold pad-batch technique. The colored fabrics showed good levelness and color fastness, with a Δ E value of 0.365. The dry rubbing fastness was grade 4, the wet rubbing fastness was grade 3, and the wash fastness was grade 4 or 4–5. The results of the cross-sectional slice of fibers showed that all nine dyes can effectively penetrate the interior of cellulose fibers.
