Preparation of chiral materials from achiral helical polymers has aroused great interest among researchers. In this work, chiral small molecules were utilized to accomplish chiral induction toward racemic helical polyacetylene via intermolecular π–π stacking by which chiral films with strong optical activity were fabricated. Furthermore, introducing fluorescent components generated full-color and white circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). A CPL generation mechanism is proposed accordingly, namely circularly polarized light excitation (CP-Ex). CPL emission and amplification of the luminescence dissymmetry factor were achieved under the synergetic effect of CP-Ex and chirality transfer. The CP-Ex mechanism was further verified by the double-layered film consisting of a chiral layer and a fluorescent layer. More noticeably, for double-layered films, the sense of CPL signals can be switched by changing the direction of excitation light. This work opens up new strategies for exploring tunable multiple- and white-color CPL materials.

Chiral materials are of particular interest and have a wide range of potential applications in life science, material science, spintronic, and optoelectronic devices. Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic–inorganic lead halide perovskites have attracted increasing attention. Incorporating the chiral organic ligands into the layered lead iodide frameworks would introduce strong chirality in pure 2D perovskites for potential applications in circularly polarized light (CPL) emission and detection; nonetheless, studies on those aspects are still in their infancy. Here, we report on the strong CPL emission and sensitive CPL detection in the visible-wavelength range in pure chiral (R-/S-MBA)2PbI4 (MBA = C6H5C2H4NH3) 2D perovskites, which are successfully synthesized with a needle shape and millimeter size by incorporating the chiral molecules. The chiral 2D perovskites (R-MBA)2PbI4 and (S-MBA)2PbI4 exhibit an average degree of circularly polarized photoluminescence (PL) of 9.6% and 10.1% at 77 K, respectively, and a maximum degree of the circularly polarized PL of 17.6% is achieved in (S-MBA)2PbI4. The degree of circularly polarized PL dramatically decreases with increasing temperature, implying that the lattice distortion induced by the incorporated chiral molecules and/or temperature-dependent spin flipping might be the origin for the observed chirality. Finally, CPL detection has been achieved with decent performance in our chiral 2D perovskite microplate/MoS2 heterostructural devices. The high degree of the circularly polarized PL and excellent CPL detection together with the layered nature of pure chiral 2D perovskites enables them to be a class of very promising materials for developing and exploring spin associated electronic devices based on the chiral 2D perovskites.

The ability to design halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) offers exceptional potential in photonic technologies. Despite recent inspiring advances, the creation of PNCs with full-color tailorablity, outstanding CPL, and long-term stability remains a substantial challenge. Herein, a robust strategy to craft CPL-active PNCs is reported, exhibiting appealing full-color tunable wavelengths, enhanced CPL, and prolonged stability. In contrast to conventional methodologies, this strategy utilizes chiral nematic mesoporous silica (CNMS) as host to render in situ confined growth of diverse achiral PNCs. By strategically engineering photonic bandgap, adjusting loading amount of PNCs, and manipulating cations/anion compositions of PNCs, robust CPL responses with tunable wavelength and intensity are successfully obtained. The resulting PNCs-CNMS achieves stable CPL emissions with full-color tunability and impressive luminescent dissymmetric factors up to −0.17. Remarkably, silica-based hosts as a protective barrier confer exceptional resistance to humidity, photodegradation, and thermal stability, even up to 95 °C. Furthermore, the ability to achieve reversible CPL switching within PNCs-CNMS is attainable by leveraging the responsiveness of CNMS matrix or dynamic behavior of impregnated PNCs. Additionally, circularly polarized light-emitting diode devices based on PNCs-CNMS can be conveniently fabricated. This research affords a powerful platform for designing functional chiroptical materials.

Multimodal optical-materials are highly desirable due to their advantages in enhancing information security, though independent modulation is challenging, especially accurately controlling the orthogonal relationship between the structural coloration (SC) and fluorescence (FL) pattern. Herein, we report a strategy which combines programmable structural coloration and switchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) for multimodal information encryption. Using photomask with aligned grating, programmable periodic patterns are fabricated on a polydiacetylene (PDA) gel film, which produces image in tunable structural colors. Introducing a chiral fluorescence layer containing perovskite nanocrystals and twisted-stacking Ag nanowires (NWs) bilayers, which provides stimuli-responsive FL and CPL with high dissymmetry factor ( g lum , up to 1.3). Importantly, the structural coloration information and FL patterns (including CPL pattern) can be independently modulated without mutual interference, even selectively concealed or exposed by varying microstructure design of the cross-linked PDA gel or by acetonitrile treatment.

This work reports the synthesis of chiral perovskite heterostructure films by combining a two-dimensional (2D) chiral (R-/S-MBA)2PbI4 perovskite with CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs). The as-synthesized chiral heterostructure films exhibit obvious circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, even though pure 2D chiral perovskite cannot present photoluminescence. It indicates that the chirality of the excited state of the QDs originates from the 2D chiral perovskite. The circular polarization-resolved transient absorption (TA) spectra further demonstrate that the CPL response of heterostructure films originates from the energy transfer between the chiral perovskite layer and QDs layer and the suppression of spin relaxation, which induces the imbalance of the spin population of excited states in QDs layer. In addition, the photoluminescence (PL), circular dichroism (CD), and CPL spectra of these heterostructure films can be controlled by varying the thickness and component of the chiral perovskite layer, which demonstrates that the anion exchange between chiral perovskite and CsPbBr3 QDs can tune the chemical composition and optoelectronic properties due to the low bonding energy difference between them and decrease the strain within the QDs layer to reduce the radiative recombination lifetime. This work provides guidance for the synthesis of chiral perovskites with a strong CPL response and further provides insight into the origination of CPL.

We found that the complexes of nucleotides and terbium(III) exhibit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The CPL of GMP/Tb/Ag coordination polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) was converted by a magnetic field and pH. The CPL of the purine nucleobase of nucleotides was opposite to that of the pyrimidine nucleobase. GMP/Tb/Ag CPNs could be used as advanced safety coatings and acid–base switches, and Tb/Ag could be used as CPL probes for rapid differentiation of nucleotides, which provided ideas for multiple transformations and applications of CPL.

As one of the most challenging scientific issues in the world, the origin of natural homochirality has attracted intense attention and has been widely studied. Herein, a unique, simple, and scalable approach to achieve the birth of helical chirality is presented. In the absence of any additional physical or chemical chiral source, optical activity has been acquired in the absolutely achiral polymer casting systems. Specifically, optically active and recyclable composite films are fabricated from casting racemic helical substituted polyacetylenes and achiral polar polymeric matrices. The induced dissymmetry intensity can be flexibly adjusted by controlling the temperature for fabricating the films and/or the recycling casting times. This study reveals that weak intermolecular interactions can enantioselectively drive racemic helices to be far from the original equilibrium state, thereby resulting in the generation of helical chirality that can be further amplified and maintained in solid films. To demonstrate the utility of the as-obtained chiroptical films, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been achieved by judiciously combining an achiral fluorescent source with the casting films. The finding of symmetry breaking at the macromolecular level can provide useful insights into the understanding of natural homochirality and the design of chiral functional materials.

The construction of effective artificial chiral light-harvesting systems ( C -LHSs) is significantly important as it provides insights into the hierarchical levels of chirality evolution in natural systems. Herein, we devised pairs of chiral blue emitters, S -/ R -binaphthalene dioxygen- N -octadecamidephthalimide ( S -/ R -BPOA), which function as donors of chirality and light absorbers. S -/ R -BPOA co-assembled with enantiomers of atomically precise yellow-emitting subnanometer-scale Ag 6 clusters to fabricate C -LHSs. Within these hybrid C -LHSs, we successfully resolved enantioselective chirality/energy transfer that was dependent on the handedness of the components. This promoted the efficient circularly polarized energy transfer in chirality-compatible ensembles, resulting in a remarkable amplification of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the ultrasmall silver cluster. The achieved dissymmetry factor ( g lum ) reached an impressive value of 1.54 × 10 −2 , and white-light CPL with chromaticity coordinates of (0.32, 0.33) was obtained. Furthermore, the customizable fluorescence and CPL in these C -LHSs bestow them with potential application possibilities in information storage and encryption.

Spin light-emitting diodes (spin-LEDs) are important for spin-based electronic circuits as they convert the carrier spin information to optical polarization. Recently, chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) has emerged as a new paradigm to enable spin-LED as it does not require any magnetic components and operates at room temperature. However, CISS-enabled spin-LED with tunable wavelengths ranging from red to near-infrared (NIR) has yet to be demonstrated. Here, chiral quasi-2D perovskites are developed to fabricate efficient spin-LEDs with tunable wavelengths from red to NIR region by tuning the halide composition. The optimized chiral perovskite films exhibit efficient circularly polarized luminescence from 675 to 788 nm, with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) exceeding 86% and a dissymmetry factor ( g lum ) ranging from 8.5 × 10 −3 to 2.6 × 10 −2 . More importantly, direct circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) is achieved at room temperature in spin-LEDs. This work demonstrated efficient red and NIR spin-LEDs with the highest external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaching 12.4% and the electroluminescence (EL) dissymmetry factors ( g EL ) ranging from 3.7 × 10 −3 to 1.48 × 10 −2 at room temperature. The composition-dependent CPEL performance is further attributed to the prolonged spin lifetime as revealed by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy.

Chiral Plasmonic nanomaterials have gradually illustrated intriguing circularly polarized light (CPL)-dependent properties in photocatalysis due to their unique chiral optical activity. However, the connection between chiral characteristics and catalytic performance of these materials in cooperative systems is rarely reported and remains a challenge task. In this work, branched AgAuPt nanoparticles induced by L / d -cysteine (Cys) with strong and perfectly symmetric circular dichroism (CD) signals are synthesized. Chiral branched AgAuPt nanoparticles firstly exhibit superior typical electrocatalytic performance. In the photoelectrocatalytic system, chiral branched AgAuPt nanoparticles demonstrate selective catalytic water splitting performance. Specifically, chiral branched AgAuPt with related CPL irradiation exhibits enhanced acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. Under the continuous irradiation of related CPL , the chiral catalyst generates more heat, which further increases the catalytic activity. This contribution of heat is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculation results. The changes in chiroptical activity during this process are recorded by variable temperature CD spectra. This work provides a novel paradigm for designing chiral catalysis systems and emphasizes the profound promise of chiral plasmonic nanomaterials as chiral catalysts.

Tetraphenylethylene and its derivatives are a class of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compounds that are most extensively and successfully studied. It has been found that the simplest TPE is easy to crystallize into homochiral M crystals or P crystals. However, no research on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of TPE solid is documented. In this paper, we report that TPE can grow into big and nonefflorescent single crystals in single helical conformation and has large birefringence that is comparative with commercially available products. The TPE single crystals can emit strong CPL with a very high glum value up to 0.53. Moreover, the sense and magnitude of CPL signals can be willfully tuned by simple rotation of the single crystal due to anisotropy of the crystals. This simple and promising CPL photonic material integrates emission, chirality, and birefringence together in one single crystal without needing an additional chiral dopant or conjugate polymer that can produce linearly polarized light. After being ground into fine powder and pressed as KBr pellets, the obtained nanocrystals of TPE also emit strong CPL light. Exceptionally, by mixing other achiral luminescent dyes together with TPE powder in KBr pellets, induced CPL signals were obtained, which could give full-color CPL emission. Although there were no interactions between TPE and the dyes in the pellets, induced CPL signals were realized through radiative energy transfer, providing a very simple method for the tuning of CPL emission.

Coordination-driven self-assembly with controllable properties has attracted increasing interest because of its potential in biological events and material science. Herein, we report on the remote, instant, and switchable control of competitive coordination interactions via ultrasound and heat stimuli in a hydrogel network. Configurational coordination changes result in the transformation of blue-emissive and opaque Al3+–amide aggregations to yellow–green-emissive and transparent Al3+–terpyridine aggregations. Interestingly, circularly polarized luminescence “off–on” switches of the metallo-supramolecular assembly are also created by these configuration changes. Additionally, the impact of the stoichiometric ratio of Al3+ and LysTPY on the assembly is also studied in detail. With a higher content of Al3+, the hydrogel with branched and abundant junctions exhibited robust, self-healing, and self-supporting properties. This in-depth understanding of the coordination interaction adjustment will afford new insights into the preparation of stimuli-responsive metallogels.
