A novel Fe/Ca-modified biochar (BC) derived from corn stalk was prepared in this study for the simultaneous adsorption and immobilization of arsenic, cadmium and lead in aqueous solution and soil, respectively. The adsorption experiment in aqueous solution indicated that 1Ca-Fe@BC exhibited excellent removal efficiency (R, %) towards arsenic (46.3%), cadmium (76.3%) and lead (93.6%). The presence of cadmium and lead could enhance the adsorption efficiency of arsenic by facilitating the formation of ternary complexes with it. Moreover, both cooperative and competitive effects occurred between cadmium and lead adsorption. When the distribution coefficient of cadmium and lead was equimolar, cooperative adsorption prevailed. However, when the distribution coefficient deviated from this balance, competitive adsorption dominated with a higher affinity for lead. The soil culture experiment demonstrated that the utilization of 1Ca-Fe@BC could enhance the stability of arsenic, cadmium and lead in soil by enhancing soil cation exchange capacity and pH while reducing dissolved organic carbon. The competitive and cooperative effects of arsenic, cadmium and lead in soil were consistent with those found in aqueous solution. The results showed that 1Ca-Fe@BC exhibited an excellent remediation efficiency for both arsenic, cadmium and lead-contaminated aqueous solution and soil.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important mutagen prevalent in the contaminated sites, bringing potential risks to human health. Iron oxides are important natural components in soils. Pyrene removal in soil using persulfate (PS) oxidation activated by microwave (MW) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) was investigated. Fe 3 O 4 significantly promoted pyrene removal in the soil; 91.7 % of pyrene was degraded within 45 min treatment. Pyrene removal rate in the Fe 3 O 4 /MW/PS system was 5.18 and 3.00 times higher than that in the Fe 3 O 4 /PS and MW/PS systems. Increasing in Fe 3 O 4 dosage, PS concentration, MW temperature, and soil moisture content in the selected range were conducive for pyrene degradation. SO 4 •− , • OH, O 2 •− , and 1 O 2 were responsible for pyrene degradation, and the conversion of Fe (Ⅱ) in the Fe 3 O 4 to Fe (Ⅲ) contributed to the formation of O 2 •− and 1 O 2 . Characteristic bands of pyrene were more obviously destroyed by the Fe 3 O 4 /MW/PS oxidation, in comparison with MW/PS oxidation. Ring hydroxylation and ring-opening reactions were the main degradation pathways of pyrene. The toxicities of the formed byproducts were significantly reduced after treatment. This study provided a promising option for pyrene contaminated soil remediation .

Both soil erosion and soil contamination pose critical environmental threats to the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). Green, efficient and feasible remediation technologies are highly demanded to meet these challenges. Herein we propose a unique “soil for soil-remediation” strategy to remediate the heavy metal polluted soil in CLP by converting loess into zeolite for the first time. With a simple template-free route, the natural loess can be converted into cancrinite (CAN) type of zeolite. A highly crystalline CAN was obtained via hydrothermal treatment at 240 o C for 48 h, with a precursor alkalinity of Na/(Si+Al)> 2.0. The as-synthesized CAN zeolite exhibits excellent remediation performance for Pb(II) and Cu(II) polluted soil. Plant assay experiment demonstrates that CAN can significantly restrain the uptake and accumulation of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions in vegetables, with a high removal efficiency up to 90.7% and 81.4%, respectively. This work demonstrates a “soil for soil-remediation” strategy to utilize the natural loess for soil remediation in CLP, which paves the way for developing green and sustainable remediation eco-materials with local loess as raw materials.

More efficient soil remediation technologies are highly anticipated to treat large quantities of heavy metal-polluted urban sites nowadays. Herein, a novel hydrothermal technology of converting heavy metal-polluted soils into zeolites for in-situ immobilizing heavy metals was proposed. The zeolites (analcime and cancrinite) could be synthesized hydrothermally with certain Na/Si and Al/Si ratios. The formed zeolites could manage to change their species and structure during zeolitization to accommodate different heavy metals in soil according to their size and charge. Since smaller-size Cu 2+ was introduced, analcime and some cancrinite possessing small cages could be formed adaptively to immobilize the Cu 2+ by replacing Na + and forming Cu 2+ -OH and Cu 2+ -O. Whereas, cancrinite with large channels managed to form to immobilize the larger-size Cd 2+ by forming Cd 2+ -O. Interplanar spacing variation of zeolites also corresponded to their structural change for accommodating different heavy metals. Leaching results showed the amounts of Cu and Cd leached from the synthesized zeolites were reduced to 0.005% and 0.05% respectively, reflecting a more stable immobilization of smaller heavy metals by small cages, in agreement with the results of distribution coefficient ( K d ). Negligible effect of pH environment on the leaching rates further confirmed the stable structural immobilization of heavy metals by zeolites.

Four kinds of surfactants were used to increase accessibility of pyrene and cadmium (Cd) in simulated pyrene, Cd, and pyrene-Cd soils in this study. Tea saponin (TS) at 40 mg L −1 groups (exchangeable fraction of Cd and bioaccessible fraction of pyrene were 8.96 and 36.93 mg kg −1 ) showed more preferable potential application in improving solubilization capability than other surfactants. The morphology of Cd was transformed from Fe-Mn oxides (8.86 to 7.61 and 8.67 to 7.99 mg kg −1 in Cd and pyrene-Cd soil) and associated to carbonates fractions (4.46 to 4.36 and 4.28 to 4.36 mg kg −1 in Cd and pyrene-Cd soil) to exchangeable fraction with adding TS. These two morphological changes were important processes in the solubilization of Cd. The morphology of pyrene was transformed from associated fraction (72.15 to 61.95 and 71.02 to 63.48 mg kg −1 in pyrene and pyrene-Cd soil) to bioaccessible fraction (26.66 to 33.71 and 26.91 to 36.93 mg kg −1 in pyrene and pyrene-Cd soil) with adding TS. This morphological transformation was important in the improving of solubilization capacity of pyrene. In contrast, the solubilization of pyrene was promoted in the presence of Cd in pyrene-Cd soil (the bioaccessible fractions were 33.71 and 36.93 mg kg −1 in pyrene and pyrene-Cd soil), but the solubilization of Cd was hindered in the presence of pyrene (the exchangeable fractions of Cd were 8.86 and 8.67 mg kg −1 in Cd and pyrene-Cd soil). These findings will be beneficial for application of surfactants in soil remediation.

Antimony (Sb) contamination in certain areas caused by activities such as antimony mining and smelting poses significant risks to human health and ecosystems. In this study, a stable composite material consisting of natural zeolite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (Z-ZVI) was successfully prepared. The immobilization effect of Z-ZVI on Sb in contaminated soil was investigated. Experimental results showed that Z-ZVI exhibited superior performance compared to pure nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) in terms of stability, with a lower zeta potential (−25.16 mV) at a pH of 7 and a higher specific surface area (54.54 m 2 /g). It can be easily applied and dispersed in contaminated soils. Additionally, Z-ZVI demonstrated a more abundant porous structure. After 60 days of treatment with 3% Z-ZVI, the leaching concentration of Sb in the contaminated soil decreased from 1.32 mg/L to 0.31 mg/L (a reduction of 76%), and the concentration of available Sb species decreased from 19.84 mg/kg to 0.71 mg/kg, achieving a fixation efficiency of up to 90%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the effective immobilization of Sb in the soil through reduction of antimonate to antimonite , precipitation, and adsorption processes facilitated by Z-ZVI. Moreover, the addition of Z-ZVI effectively reduced the bioavailability of Sb in the contaminated soil, thereby mitigating its toxicity to earthworms. In conclusion, Z-ZVI can be utilized as a promising material for the safe remediation and antimony and other heavy metal-contaminated soils.

The bioaccumulation and toxicity of heavy metals are serious threats to human activities and ecological health. The exploitation of environmentally friendly passivated materials is major importance for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil. This research developed a new type of environmental functional material with a core-shell structure, which is an iron-based material functionalized with phosphorus and carbon from sludge for heavy metal pollution remediation. The results indicated that the C/P@Fe exhibits excellent heavy metal removal ability, and the maximum removal rates of the two heavy metals in simulated wastewater could reach 100% under optimum reaction conditions. It also effectively converts the labile Cr/Pb into the stable fraction after 28 days of incubation, which increased the maximum residual fraction percentage of Cr and Pb by 32.43% and 160% in soil. Further analysis found that the carbon layer wrapped around the iron base could improve the electron transport efficiency of reducing iron, phosphorus and ferrum could react with heavy metal ions to form stable minerals, such as FeCr 2 O 4 , FeO·Cr 2 O 3 , Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, PbCO 3 , 2PbCO 3 ·Pb(OH) 2 and PbS, after reacting with C/P@Fe. The study demonstrated that the Iron-based materials functionalized with carbon and phosphorus from sludge provided a more efficient way to remove heavy metals.

The use of degradable chelating agents to facilitate phytoextraction is a promising low-cost method for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. However, there are few studies on how plants and soils respond to the chelating agents. In this study, the responses of French marigold ( Tagetes patula L.) and soil cadmium (Cd) to the chelator tetrasodium glutamate (GLDA) was investigated in a 180 d field trial. Five GLDA treatments (0, 292.5, 585, 1170, and 2340 kg hm −2 ) were carried out in a Cd-contaminated soil (0.47 mg kg −1 ) under French marigold plantation. The results showed that the application of GLDA promoted the transformation of other forms of Cd in soil to exchangeable state, and the exchangeable Cd and Fe–Mn oxide bound state increased by 42.13% and 32.97% ( p < 0.05), respectively. The cell wall Cd accumulations significantly increased 9.39% ( p < 0.05) and the percentages of soluble fractions increased by 460.33% ( p < 0.05). Furthermore, increases occurred in soil pH, as well as DOC and DTPA-Cd contents with increasing the total amount of GLDA. The composite application of GLDA (2340 kg hm −2 ) with French marigold reduced the total soil Cd content by 7.59% compared with the soil background. Altogether, results of this study suggested that the application of GLDA can effectively activate soil Cd and enhance the capability of French marigold for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

Waste biomass can be recycled to prepare biochar for soil restoration, in which process soil fertility would not be lost. In this work, biochar was prepared from waste pomelo peel, combined with ZnO, to be used to immobilize Cu(II) in contaminated soil, whose maximum adsorption capacity was up to 216.37 mg g −1 . Due to combination of ZnO, the BET surface area of biochar increased from 2.39 to 18.53 m 2 g −1 . Meanwhile, the surface functional groups increased, which was conducive to fixation of metal ion on the surface of biochar. Both pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model fit the experimental data well. Adsorption was easy to happen since the adsorption site on the surface of biochar/ZnO had a strong affinity with Cu(II). In addition, mechanism investigation indicated that Cu(II) was bond with biochar/ZnO mainly by non-bioavailable state (75.6%) primarily. It inferred that biochar/ZnO was an efficient and promising passivator in reducing heavy metal risk in soil.

Thermal desorption (TD) is known as an effective technique to remediate PAHs-contaminated sites. However, effectively removing PAHs using TD while saving time, and energy, and minimizing soil damage remains a challenge. In this study, we examined the combined effects of various factors on the removal efficiency of pyrene (PYR) by TD and developed an optimal numerical model based on conducting a series of soil experiments. The results showed that temperature (T) and time (t) promoted the desorption of PYR, while water ( S w ) and organic matter ( f om ) were just the opposite. Besides, water and organic matter had a synergistic effect proportionally. It was found that adjusting the soil-water ratio (which can be controlled by organic matter) maximized the desorption rate of PYR. An ideal S w / f om 1.56 and a minimized recommended temperature (173 °C) were proposed based on the model. Finally, the efficacy of the optimized scheme was validated in real-world site soil. These findings not only mechanistically revealed the desorption behavior of PYR under the influence of various factors, but also provided an optimized scheme for efficiently removing PAHs using TD, thereby accelerating the remediation process and reducing energy consumption. The modeling ideas and conclusions obtained may be applicable to other PAHs, guiding the effective remediation of PAHs-polluted sites.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising soil contamination amendment agents for its efficient absorbing abilities. However, the application of LDHs in remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil are to be developed. In this study, we synthesized MgAlFe-LDHs by introducing Fe 3+ into interlayer of the MgAl-LDHs using co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed to characterized the micro structure of MgAlFe-LDHs. And then pot incubation and pilot experiments were conducted to investigate the heavy metal removal efficiencies of MgAlFe-LDHs and its potential being applicated in As contaminated soil amendment from a deserted arsenic plant site. Incubation experiments showed that the MgAlFe-LDHs had a higher removal efficiency on arsenic contaminated soil compared to other agents. And the results of pilot experiments indicated that the MgAlFe-LDHs can immobilize up to 90% of the As in soil with 5% (w/w) addition. Based on the results above, MgAlFe-LDHs are promising materials amending the heavy metal contaminated soil with practical application value.

Both alkaline heavy metal (HM) contaminated red mud (RM) recycling and Cr(VI) polluted soil remediation are severe hazardous environmental problems. Herein, we developed a novel integrated approach to neutralize and stabilize the hazardous RM via the introduction of Ca2+ and Cl– dual ions. When 3% CaCl2·2H2O is added, the pH of RM is reduced from 11.0 to 8.9, and the Pb, Cr, Zn, Cu, and As leaching concentrations from RM are suppressed lower than the environmental standards of China and the World Health Organization (Pb, Cr, Zn, Cu < 0.50 mg/L; As < 10 μg/L). Detailed mechanism studies reveal that the pH neutralization is attributed to the novel OH– flocculation effect ascribing to Ca2+ charge neutralization and Cl– promoted proton neutralization. Furthermore, as the pH decreases, the HM adsorption capacity of RM is enhanced, achieving stable HM immobilization. The treated RM can be further employed to remediate Cr(VI) contaminated soil (Cr concentration 570 ppm; treated RM weight percentage in soil 5.0%), which can suppress 56.0% Cr mobility in soil and 68.4% bioaccumulated Cr in the harvested vegetables. Overall, this work demonstrates an ecofriendly “waste-to-soil remediation” strategy to solve both the solid waste and soil pollution problems.
