Arsenic and cadmium (As/Cd) are toxic elements which negatively impact the health and productivity of rice plants by subjecting them to stress. To address these issues, we developed three biochar amendment materials derived from plant-based corn-stover with iron-magnesium modification (FM@CB), char sourced from animal-based eggshells with iron-magnesium modification (FM@EB), and a blend (1:1, w/w) of both (FM@CEB). Batch adsorption experiment revealed that FM@CB exhibited a Langmuir sorption capacity of 77 mg g −1 for As(III) and 107 mg g −1 for Cd(II). In contrast, FM@EB showed values of 63 mg g −1 for As(III) and 115 mg g −1 for Cd(II), both observed in mixed systems. The exothermic dual adsorption mechanisms could include ion exchange, cation-anion bridging, complexation with surface functional groups, and precipitation processes. Pot trials were conducted, and the findings unveiled a substantial enhancement in rice grain yield with a 2% application of FM@CB, FM@EB, and FM@CEB. Specifically, there was a notable increase of 21.9%, 34.9%, and 37.6%, respectively. Simultaneously, the application led to a reduction in grain As levels by 34.4%, 53.2%, and 42.6%, and grain Cd levels by 48.7%, 71.2%, and 59.9%, respectively, in comparison to the no-amendment control condition. Our study observed a transformation in the soil's microbial community, as beneficial bacterial genera such as Anaeromyxobacter , Citrifermentans , and Desulfovibrio emerged to assist in the detoxification of these metal contaminants. Concurrently, the application of these materials led to a reduction in harmful bacterial genera like Pseudomonas , Flavobacterium , and Massilia . In addition, these amendments decreased the bioavailable As/Cd fractions in the soil and promoted the root-iron-plaque, which effectively sequesters these contaminants, rendering rice quality improvement. Ultimately, the use of these amendments, particularly FM@CEB, holds the promise of protecting rice from harmful metal(loid)s contaminants, increasing yields, and revitalizing the soil. The presence of these unique bacterial genera, especially those capable of detoxifying As/Cd, plays a crucial role in ensuring a healthier and more secure environment for all living organisms.

The omnipresence of rare earth elements (REEs) in the environment, driven by their extensive industrial applications and common occurrence in some weathered crusts, has raised significant concerns as emerging pollutants. Soil washing has been recognized as an effective approach to remediate REEs-contaminated soils. However, traditional washing agents frequently lead to soil acidification and salinization, adversely affecting soil microbial communities and plant growth. This study explored the use of biodegradable chelators (BCs)—specifically N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)-L-glutamic acid (GLDA), iminodisuccinic acid (ISA), and polyaspartic acid (PASP)—as alternatives for removing REEs from contaminated agricultural soils. Our findings demonstrated that the removal efficiency of REEs positively correlates with BCs concentration, liquid-to-solid ratio, and washing time, while showing a negative correlation with solution pH. Through response surface analysis, we determined the optimal parameters for the washing process, revealing that GLDA, ISA, and PASP achieved total REEs removal efficiencies of 50.8%, 40.5%, and 23.2%, respectively. Statistical analysis confirmed that the concentration of BCs was the primary factor influencing washing effectiveness. Moreover, washing with BCs significantly removed reducible REEs—those bound to iron/manganese oxides—thereby decreasing the mobility and bioavailability of REEs in soil. The reduction in bioavailable REEs significantly lowered the environmental risk associated with contaminated soil. Notably, the activity of soil enzymes improved post-washing with BCs, indicating a positive impact on soil health. This study provides valuable insights into the remediation of REEs-contaminated soils using BCs, with GLDA emerging as a particularly effective agent.

Herbicide acetochlor (ACT) is widely used in agricultural production, but it remains unclear whether microplastics (MPs) from agricultural films exacerbate its harmful effects on soil health. Here, a microcosm cultivation experiment was conducted to investigate the impacts of PE (Polyethylene)-MPs and PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate)-MPs with ACT (MPs/ACT) on soil health. Results showed that MPs/ACT treatment caused soil acidification, depletion of organic carbon and ammonium, altered enzyme activities, and influenced greenhouse gas emissions compared to ACT alone. MPs/ACT co-exposure also restructured microbial communities, reducing alpha diversity, increasing co-occurrence network complexity, enriching putative contaminant degraders, and enhancing the relative abundance of key nitrogen-cycling genes, enzymes, and carbon-cycling genes. Notably, PBAT/ACT stimulated nitrification-denitrification processes more than PE/ACT, indicating polymer-specific effects on soil nutrient cycling. Overall, MPs/ACT decreased soil health by 8.89 % - 14.63 %, greater than 8.39 % caused by ACT alone. These results demonstrate that MPs exacerbate the toxic effects of ACT on soil health. Mitigation strategies, such as reducing MP inputs, optimizing herbicide use, and incorporating biochar or microbial amendments, may help to restore soil health and maintain ecosystem stability. This study provides critical insights into the compounded impacts of MPs and herbicides on soil ecosystems.

A comprehensive assessment of the heavy metal system in the rehabilitated saline-alkali land holds significant importance, as the in-situ remediation process utilizing amendments substantially alters the initial physicochemical properties of the soil, which could lead to the migration or reactivation of previously stabilized heavy metals. In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the heavy metal content and health risk within the improved saline-alkali soil-plant system. Moreover, a comprehensive evaluation based on the TOPSIS-RSR method is carried out to accurately gauge the soil health status. The findings indicate that the modification process has an impact on the concentrations of heavy metals in the soil and crops, causing either an increase or decrease. However, the level of heavy metal pollution in the improved saline-alkali soil and rape remains within safe limits. The results of the migration of heavy metals after amendment application indicated that the migration of heavy metals in the soil was influenced by the properties of the heavy metals, the composition of the amendment, and leaching. Furthermore, the total non-carcinogenic hazard quotients in the soil and rape were within the safe threshold for all populations. The findings provided novel insights into the status and risk assessment of the pollution of improved saline-alkali soil.

This study investigated the application of a specific soil washing method to remove Cu and Pb from contaminated agricultural soil. To develop an efficient leaching agent of heavy metal compounds for use in farmland soil, a mixed chelator (MC) was prepared using potassium fulvic acid (PFA, 3.2%) and citric acid (CIT, 0.16 M) in a volume ratio of 4:1 (PFA:CIT = 4:1); the optimal solid-liquid ratio (S/L = 1:20), initial pH value (4.51) and contact time (360 min) were also explored. Under optimal conditions, the removal efficiencies of MC for Cu and Pb were 42.92% and 50.46%, respectively, both of which performed better than PFA (27.86% of Cu and 17.91% of Pb) and CIT (42.04% of Cu and 41.46% of Pb). The effective states, bioavailability and relative mobilities of Cu and Pb in soil were also efficiently reduced by MC, which also increased the stability of these elements, thereby lowering the risk to soil health. More importantly, MC not only had little effect on the soil physicochemical properties (e.g., pH, organic matter (OM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), ammonium nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP) and rapidly available potassium (AK)), but also improved the restored soil. Furthermore, soil structure, surface elements and the enzyme activity did not exhibit significantly loss. Therefore, MC has great potential for remediating agricultural soil.
