Impact of nanominerals on the migration and distribution of cadmium on soil aggregates

Yulong Li,Sufen Dong,Jianchen Qiao,Shuxuan Liang,Xiaowei Wu,Mei Wang,Huiwei Zhao,Wei Liu

Soil aggregates play an important role in the migration and transformation of heavy metals . In this paper, solution adsorption and incubation experiments were carried out to explore the effects of soil texture (sandy loam and clay loam), nanominerals (nanomontmorillonite [nMt] and nanohydroxyapatite [nHA]), and pollution levels (5, 10, and 15 mg/kg) on the surface migration and transformation of cadmium in soil aggregates with different sized particles. The aim is to clarify the dynamics of cadmium in various particle size soil aggregates of different texture soils and demonstrate the positive effect of nanominerals on the partitioning and geochemical fractions of cadmium between the aggregates. The results showed that as the particle size decreased, the ability of the soil aggregates to carry cadmium initially decreased and then increased. Organic matter was the main factor influencing the cadmium distribution among the soil aggregates, whereas soil texture had no significant effect on the adsorption capacity of Cd 2+ in the soil particles. The soil aggregates with sizes <15 μm had the highest cadmium accumulation capacity. As the cadmium concentration increased, cadmium ions were more likely to accumulate in soil aggregates with small particles (<15 μm). The application of nanominerals promoted the migration of cadmium to <15 μm particles from 2000 to 45 μm particles in sandy loam and 75-15 μm particles in clay. nHA also significantly improved the content of residual cadmium in the <15 μm portion of both soil textures. This study provides a theoretical basis for the use of nano-fixatives in environmental restoration applications.

Carbon Dot-Based Smart Soil with Automatically Adjustable Porosity and Aggregate Size

Qianjie Niu,Jiwei Jiang,Changsong Zhan,Yujie Tao,Zijun Ye,Jian Huang,Bin Dong,Zhenhui Kang

With the world's population expanding rapidly, modern agriculture is evolving at a swift pace, leading to a significant increase in food production, primarily through the use of chemical fertilizers. However, this heavy reliance on fertilizers has led to issues such as soil compaction and decrease of earthworm abundance. Herein this study reports a smart soil consisting of conventional soil and carbon dots (CDot) based smart material which is capable of automatically adjusting its porosity and soil aggregate size. Due to the responsiveness, The CDot-based smart soil can lift its height up to 150% upon humidity stimulation due to the increased porosity which is similar to the effect caused by earthworms. Based on this effect, this smart soil can increase the growth rate of maize seedlings by 40%, thus showing great potentials in agriculture.

phoD-harboring bacterial community assembly and co-occurrence in soil aggregates during roadside slope restoration

Zongyang Liu,Shenghao Ai,Meihua Sheng,Jingyao Xiao,Peng Wang,Yingwei Ai,Xiaoyan Ai

Soil organic phosphorus (OP) mineralization plays a vital role in the ecological restoration of roadside slopes. However, the changes in the functional bacterial ( phoD -harboring) community involved in OP mineralization in soil aggregates during slope restoration are still unknown. In this study, a space-for-time substitution was conducted to compare the differences in the phoD -harboring bacterial community structure and assembly in soil aggregates of four particle sizes (<0.053, 0.25–2, 0.053–0.25, and >2 mm) at different slope restoration ages (7, 11, and 14 years). The results showed no significant differences in the phoD -harboring community diversity and structure among soil aggregates in the same restoration year. Community structure dissimilarity increased with restoration time. Species replacement dominated slope soils restored for 7, 11, and 14 years, accounting for 78.40 %, 79.68 %, and 68.96 % of the total β-diversity, respectively. Community assembly processes shifted from coexisting deterministic (68 %) and stochastic (32 %) processes in the 7-year restoration slope soil to dominantly deterministic (98 % and 91 %) processes in the 11- and 14-year restoration slope soils, respectively. Dominant phoD -harboring bacteria tended to shift from r-to K-strategies as slope restoration progressed, and the C:P ratio significantly correlated with both community structure and assembly. The increasing C:P ratio over restoration time stimulated phoD -harboring bacteria to secrete alkaline phosphatase to improve P availability, enhancing the complexity and stability of the network. This study elucidates the changing patterns of phoD -harboring bacteria in soil aggregates and provides a theoretical basis for the management of soil P during roadside restoration.

Effect of Aminating Lignin Loading with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi on Soil Aggregate Structure Improvement

Chenghui Hu,Tingting Xu,Shumei Wang,Huiyang Bian,Hongqi Dai

Lignin is an important component of plant fiber raw materials, and is a three-dimensional network structure aromatic polymer with abundant resources and a complex structure in nature. Lignin is generally used as industrial waste, and its potential value has not been fully utilized. Modern agriculture extensively uses chemical fertilizers, leading to the gradual degradation of soil fertility and structure, which seriously affects crop growth, nutrient transport, and root respiration function. Based on soil bulk density, porosity, aggregates, and their stability indicators, this study analyzed the effects of aminated industrial lignin and its loading with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on soil structure improvement and plant growth. It was hoped that resource-rich lignin could play a beneficial role in improving soil structure and promoting crop growth. The phenolic hydroxyl group of lignin was epoxidized and further aminated to load with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The results indicated that amine-modified lignin could effectively load with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi-supported aminated lignin to soil aggregate structure improvement greatly reduced the bulk density of soil, and increased the porosity of soil and the content of large granular soil. Compared with unmodified soil, soil bulk density decreased by 73.08%, the porosity of soil increased by 70.43%, and the content of large granular soil increased by 56.38%. Using the improved soil for corn cultivation efficiently increased the biomass of corn. The plant height was increased by 72.16%, the root–shoot ratio was increased by 156.25%, and other indexes were also improved to varying degrees. The experimental method provides an important basis for the effective utilization of lignin materials in agriculture in the future.

The regulating mechanisms of tritonX-100 affected oxidation of PAHs in site soil aggregates using sodium citrate activated Fe2+-persulfate

Chunhui Zhang,Yue Gao,Cuiping Wang,Hongwen Sun

Here, we present a first investigation of the inhibition mechanism of surfactant Triton X-100 (TX-100) on the oxidation degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in site soil aggregates using sodium citrate assisted Fe 2+ -activated persulfate (SC/Fe 2+ /PS). First, TX-100 was not only competed the adsorption sites of soil aggregates with PS, but also consumed PS, which inhibit the PAHs remediation rate in the TX-100 elution followed by the SC/Fe 2+ /PS oxidation system from 55.6% in the oxidation system to 50.3%. Furthermore, in the oxidation followed by elution system, PAHs was adsorbed on the iron minerals produced during the oxidation, which would be form a bound PAHs that was difficult to react with PS, and then re-eluted to the soil by the TX-100. Additionally, it was found that the oxidative and the elution efficiency of PAHs exhibited negative correlations with aggregate particle sizes. Finally, soil microorganism communities were more strongly changed by SC/Fe 2+ /PS oxidation and PAHs concentration than that of TX-100 elution, with obvious alterations bacteria than fungi, the effects of SC/Fe 2+ /PS and PAHs concentration on microorganism communities were opposite. This study provided a proof of regulating mechanisms for the site soil remediation using surfactants combined with the iron-PS system. Environmental Implications Surfactants may have inhibitory effects in advanced oxidative systems on the removal of PAHs and may alter soil microorganism diversity. It is necessary to comprehensively analyze the intrinsic regulatory mechanisms, and the correlation between the remediation process and soil microbial community structure of surfactants affecting the remediation efficiency of PAHs in site soil aggregates. This work comprehensively discussed the controlling mechanisms of surfactants affect the oxidation remediation of PAHs in the site soil and providing new insights for the design of the remediation technologies for the soil polluted with PAHs in the future.

UHPM dominance in driving the formation of petroleum-contaminated soil aggregate, the bacterial communities succession, and phytoremediation

Xiaokang Li,Quanfu Wu,Yinfei Wang,Gang Li,Yuhong Su

This study focused on the effects of urea humate-based porous materials (UHPM) on soil aggregates, plant physiological characteristics, and microbial diversity to explore the effects of UHPM on the phytoremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil. The compositions of soil aggregates, ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) biomass, plant petroleum enrichment capacity, and bacterial communities in soils with and without UHPM were investigated. The results showed that UHPM significantly increased soil aggregate content by 0.25 mm-5 mm, resulting in higher fertilizer holding capacity, erosion resistance capacity, and plant biomass and microbial number than the soil without UHPM mixed. In addition, UHPM decreased the absorption of petroleum by plants in the soil while increasing the abundance of degrading bacteria and petroleum-degrading-related genes in the soil, thereby promoting the removal of hard-to-degrade petroleum components. RDA showed that, compared with the unimproved soil, each soil indicator was positively correlated with a high abundance of degrading bacteria in the improved soil and was significant. UHPM can be regarded as a petroleum-contaminated soil remediation agent that combines slow nutrient release with soil improvement effects.

Rapid conversion of fly ash into synthetic soil via polymer-assist granulation

Gang Li,Chunyan Cao,Minkun Cai,Lingyu Zhao,Bingang Xu

Accumulating stockpiles of unutilized coal fly ash (FA) presents a major challenge due to its vast production and limited reuse. Converting FA into soil-like media offers a promising valorization pathway, yet its non-cohesive nature impedes direct utilization. Conventional strategies often rely on the incorporation of organic matter to promote aggregation, but such indirect approaches are inefficient and difficult to control. This work introduces a rapid and controllable approach using a synthetic polymer adhesive to directly form water-stable FA aggregates, overcoming the inefficiencies of traditional organic matter-based aggregation methods. First, an FA–PVA composite is prepared through mixing and drying, after which strong hydrogen bonding between PVA and FA ensures the composite’s high water stability. The bulk composite is then granulated into aggregates with controllable size and assembled into soil. This process converts non-cohesive FA—which otherwise forms dense, waterlogged structures with critically low aeration porosity (<3 %)—into a well-structured soil with balanced hydration and aeration properties (66 % water-holding capacity and 21 % air-filled porosity) with one week. Agricultural validation confirmed successful seed germination and 70 % of the eggplant yield relative to that in natural soil. This work demonstrates a rapid and scalable pathway to convert industrial solid waste into well-structured soil, offering new opportunities for landfill reclamation and the reuse of FA.

Significantly bipolar immigration of PFOA and PFOS into macroaggregates and microaggregates in soils under simulated natural conditions

Li Yulong,He Liuyang,Chen Yulin,Xue Jianming,Zheng Li,Yang Shengmao,Wu Li,Chen Zhendong,Zhang Zulin,Yang Lie

Purpose Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in soils pose a severe threat to the soil ecosystem and human health. Soil aggregates play a critical role in the migration and transformation of pollutants. Materials and methods In this study, soil with different properties (Fluvisol and Planosol) spiked with PFOA/PFOS were incubated for 90 days, and then divided into five particle size fractions by wet sieving with low loss. The concentrations of PFOA and PFOS in soils and fractions were extracted using ultrasound-assisted extraction method with methanol as an extractant. The PFOA and PFOS were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS). Results and discussion The results showed that the ability of the soil aggregates to carry PFOA and PFOS initially decreased and then increased with decreasing particle sizes. Moreover, organic matter was the main factor influencing the PFOA and PFOS distribution in the soil aggregates, whereas soil types did not affect the accumulation capacity of PFOA and PFOS on soil particles. The macroaggregates (2000–250 µm) showed the highest accumulation capacity of PFOA and PFOS, suggesting high load of PFOA and PFOS. Additionally, the microaggregates (< 15 µm) played a dominant role in the PFOA and PFOS distribution due to the high proportion of this fraction in soil samples (51.73 ~ 62.47%). Conclusions Significantly bipolar immigrations of PFOA and PFOS into macroaggregates and microaggregates in soils were observed. This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that the particulate organic carbon (POM) can sorb the PFOA and PFOS in the macroaggregates, while the presence of SOC (highly humified) may increase the PFOA and PFOS contents in the microaggregates. The stabilizing mechanism of cadmium in contaminated soil using green synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles under long-term incubation

Jiajiang Lin,Fengxin He,Binglin Su,Mengqiang Sun,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Despite numerous studies having been conducted on the stabilization of heavy metal contaminated soil, our understanding of the mechanisms involved remains limited. Here green synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles (GION) were applied to stabilize cadmium (Cd) in a contaminated soil. GION not only stabilized soil Cd, but also improved soil properties within one year of incubation. After GION application both the exchangeable and carbonate bound Cd fractions decreased by 14.2–83.5% and 18.3–85.8% respectively, and most of the Cd was translocated to the residual Cd fraction. The application of GION also strongly altered soil bacterial communities. In GION treatments, the abundance of Gemmatimonadetes, Proteobacteria, and Saccharibacteria increased which led to a shift in the dominant bacterial genera from Bacillus to Candidatus koribacter . The variation in bacteria confirmed the restoration of the contaminated soil. The most abundant bacterial genus and species found in GION treatments were related to (i) plant derived biomass decomposition; (ii) ammoxidation and denitrification; and (iii) Fe oxidation. GION application may enhance the formation of larger soil aggregates with anaerobic centers and coprecipitation coupled Fe (II) oxidization, ammoxidation and nitrite reduction followed by Fe mineral ripening may be involved in Cd stabilization. The predominant stabilization mechanism was thus coprecipitation-ripening-stabilization.
