A quantitative evaluation of the dynamics of antimony (Sb) species transformation when Sb(III) enters the soil matrix would facilitate the understanding of the speciation and environmental fate of Sb in natural environments. Towards this end, the coupled sorption and abiotic oxidation kinetics of Sb(III) were examined across 12 soils with a 24 h timeframe. The soil-solution distribution coefficients (K d ) of Sb ranged between 214 and 5965 L kg −1 . Both apparent and mechanistic kinetic models were used to described the process. The apparent kinetic model indicated a two-rate oxidation and associated stabilization behavior of Sb in soils. The fast oxidation rate constants ranged from 0.147 to 0.763 h −1 , which were one to two orders of magnitudes higher than the slow rate constants (0.002–0.039 h −1 ). Iron and Mn oxides were identified as the key soil components associated with adsorptive-oxidative sites (SOH) and oxidative sites (Mn-OH) of soils for Sb species, and these were subsequently integrated into the mechanistic kinetic model. This model included the adsorption–desorption of Sb(III) as well as the oxidation product, Sb(V) on the SOH, the oxidation of Sb(III) by SOH and Mn-OH, and the stabilization of both Sb(III) and Sb(V). The model produced a global fit for dissolved and adsorbed Sb species across the 12 soils. This study provides new information for predicting the dynamics of Sb in soils when multiple adsorption–desorption, oxidation and stabilization reactions are coupled in natural environments.

This paper evaluates the UV photodegradation of 17β-estradiol (E2) on silica gel and in natural soil with different soil components. Silica gel was chosen as a stable and pure support to simulate the photochemical behavior of E2 on the surface of natural soil. Ultraviolet light, rather than visible light, was confirmed to play a decisive role in the photodegradation of E2 on silica gel. The effect of three soil components, including humic acid (HA), inorganic salts, and relative humidity (RH), on the photochemical behavior of E2 on silica gel or soil under UV irradiation was then evaluated. Two HA concentrations (10 and 20 mg g −1 ) and three salts (ferric sulfate, copper sulfate and sodium carbonate) were observed to obviously inhibit the degradation of E2 on silica gel. Interestingly, nitrate was found to obviously improve the removal efficiency of E2. Both too-dry and too-wet conditions obviously reduced the removal rate of E2, and the optimum relative humidity (RH) value was found to be approximately about 35% (30 °C). Furthermore, twenty intermediate products and two major pathways were proposed to describe the transformation processes of E2 treated by UV irradiation, among which oligomers were found to be the major intermediate products before complete mineralization. The efficient UV removal of E2 on silica gel and natural soil suggested a feasible strategy to remediate E2 contaminated soil.

Various antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) can thrive in soil and resist such environmental pressures as antibiotics through cooperative resistance, thereby promoting ARB retention and antibiotic resistance genes transmission. However, there has been finite knowledge in regard to the mechanisms and potential ecological risks of cooperative resistance in soil microbiome. In this study, soil minerals and organic matters were designed to treat a mixture of two Escherichia coli strains with different antibiotic resistance ( E. coli DH5α/pUC19 and E. coli XL2-Blue) to determine how soil components affected cooperative resistance, and Luria-Bertani plates containing two antibiotics were used to observe dual-drug resistant bacteria (DRB) developed via cooperative resistance. Results showed quartz, humic acid , and biochar promoted E. coli XL2-Blue with high fitness costs, whereas kaolin, montmorillonite , and soot inhibited both strains. Using fluorescence microscope and PCR, it was speculated DRB could resist the antibiotic pressure via E. coli XL2-Blue coating E. coli DH5α/pUC19. E. coli DH5α/pUC19 dominated cooperative resistance. Correlation analysis and scanning electron microscope images indicated soil components influenced cooperative resistance. Biochar promoted cooperative resistance by increasing intracellular reactive oxygen species , thereby reducing the dominant strain concentration required for DRB development. Kaolin inhibited cooperative resistance the most, followed by soot and montmorillonite.

Soil is the main natural reservoir of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Their dissemination and proliferation were largely motivated by conjugative transfer, while the influence of soil components on bacterial conjugative transfer and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In the present study, two Escherichia coli strains were exposed to soil minerals (quartz, kaolinite and montmorillonite) and organic matters (humic acid, biochar and soot) respectively to investigate their impact on ARGs conjugation. The results showed that quartz had no significant effect on conjugation; montmorillonite promoted the growth of the donor, but inhibited the recipient and conjugant; kaolinite and three organic matters significantly promoted the production of conjugant, while biochar promoted and then inhibited it with time prolong. Within the range of bacterial concentration involved in this study, the concentration of conjugant increased with the ratio of the concentration of donor and recipient (R D/R ), indicating that the variation of conjugant production was mainly mediated by changing R D/R . Further observation of biochar treatment group showed that the bacterial responses such as cell membrane permeability, cell surface hydrophobicity and biofilm formation ability shifted with the exposure time, which might be a potential factor affecting conjugative transfer. Collectively, our findings suggest that the type and exposure time of soil components jointly affected conjugation, while the change of R D/R and related bacterial responses are the main underlying mechanisms.
