Biochar application to soil is recognised for its capacity to immobilise pollutants (through sorption) while composted inputs can accelerate the biodegradation of organic pollutants. However, little is known about the influence of combined incorporation on plant uptake of organic pollutants. Therefore, we investigated the effects of maize straw-derived biochar (MSB), compost derived from maize straw and pig manure (SMC), and their combination (MSB-SMC) as soil amendments on bioavailability of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) and carrot ( Daucus carota L. ) uptake in a horticultural soil. We found that biochar alone performed well in reducing BDE-47 bioavailability, but was less effective at degrading the pollutant. Conversely, addition of compost stimulated BDE-47 biodegradation. MSB-SMC enhanced BDE-47 biodegradation in soil, reduced contamination of carrot roots, and caused significant reductions in soil extractable BDE-47. The combination of contrasting approaches to remediation thus resulted in the most favorable outcome for a contaminated soil: immobilisation of contaminant from vegetable crops (via biochar) with simultaneous bioremediation of the growing medium. These findings point towards an effective strategy for reducing plant uptake of PDBEs through the combined use of biochar and compost as soil amendment – reducing mobility and facilitating degradation of the accessible contaminant fractions.

Because of the diversification of industries in developing cities, the phenomenon of the simultaneous contamination of various kinds of pollutants is becoming common, and the environmental process of pollutants in multi-contaminated environmental mediums has attracted attention in recent years. In this study,p-arsanilic acid (ASA), a kind of organic arsenic feed additive that contains the arsenic group in a chemical structure, is used as a typical contaminant to investigate its adsorption on iron oxides and its implication for contaminated soils. The adsorption kinetics on all solids can be fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. At the same mass dosage conditions, the adsorption amount per unit surface area on iron oxides follows the order α-FeOOH > γ-Fe2O3> α-Fe2O3, which is significantly higher than that for actual soil, because of the lower content of iron oxides in actual soil. Lower pH conditions favor ASA adsorption, while higher pH conditions inhibit its adsorption as a result of the electrostatic repulsion and weakened hydrophobic interaction. The presence of phosphate also inhibits ASA adsorption because of the competitive effect. Correlations between the amount of ASA adsorption in actual soil and the Fe2O3content, total phosphorus content, arsenic content, and organic matter content of actual soil are also investigated in this work, and a moderate positive correlation (R2= 0.630), strong negative correlation (R2= 0.734), insignificant positive correlation (R2= 0.099), and no correlation (R2= 0.006) are found, respectively. These findings would help evaluate the potential hazard of the usage of organic arsenic feed additives, as well as further the understanding of the geochemical processes of contaminants in complicated mediums.Keywords:p-arsanilic acid;iron oxides;soil contamination;adsorption

Long-term mining activities in the mercury-thallium mining area of Lanmuchang, southwestern China, resulting in contamination of surrounding soils with complex toxic elements such as Tl, As, Sb, Hg, and Cd. While manure aids in pollution control and soil fertilization, its impact on Tl bioavailability in soil remains incompletely understood. This study explored the physiological changes and Tl accumulation in Capsicum annuum under combined pollution stress and application of livestock and poultry manure near the Lanmuchang mining area. The results showed that chicken manure promoted Tl accumulation in Capsicum annuum , whereas pig and cattle manure inhibited it, with pig manure exhibiting the strongest inhibitory effect. Both pig and cattle manure reduced the transpiration rate of Capsicum annuum , which decreased the driving force for Tl transport to the plant's upper parts. Additionally, manure increased organic acid secretion in Capsicum annuum roots and decreased soil Eh. This led to a reduction in Tl 3+ to the more stable Tl + , which decreased the content of exchangeable Tl form and its activity. Pig manure significantly reduced Tl content in stems, leaves, and fruits by increasing the area of the Casparian bands in Capsicum annuum roots, which hindered Tl accumulation. In contrast, chicken manure had the opposite effect. The findings of this study provide important theoretical support for scientifically guiding agricultural production safety in areas contaminated with the heavy metal Tl.

Tea saponin (TS), a kind of green biosurfactant produced by plants, was added into the Cd–pyrene co-contaminated soils to evaluate its influence on phytoremediation of Cd and pyrene by Lolium multiflorum . The results showed that the accumulation of pyrene in L. multiflorum was significantly promoted by the TS. Compared with no TS treatments (PL and ML), the aboveground concentrations of pyrene in TS treatments (PLT and MLT) increased by 135 and 30%, respectively, and the underground concentrations of pyrene in TS treatments (PLT and MLT) increased by 40 and 25%. The concentrations of Cd in the aboveground and underground parts in single contaminated treatments were all significantly more than those in co-contaminated treatments, while the situation of pyrene was quite the reverse. Besides, the addition of TS enhanced activities of dehydrogenase and polyphenol oxidase in soils and increased the biomass of L. multiflorum . The micromorphology of L. multiflorum was not affected by TS. The study suggests that the use of L. multiflorum with TS is an alternative technology for remediation of Cd–pyrene co-contaminated soils.

Soil contamination by heavy metals and metalloids has been a major environmental challenge. While various remediation technologies have been reported, field data on the remediation effectiveness have been limited. We tested a new remediation technology for on-site immobilization of As(III) and Pb(II) in a contaminated soil at an abandoned chemical plant site. A novel ternary amending agent consisting of Fe 2 O 3 , MnO 2 , and Mg(OH) 2 (molar ratio = 1.0:5.5:5.5) was used to amend the soil on-site . Field monitoring data indicated that the amendment severed as a pH buffer and a long-term sequester for both As and Pb in the soil. At a dosage of 3 wt%, the acid-leachable As and Pb were lowered from 0.042–0.077 mg/L and 0.013–0.022 mg/L to 0.0062–0.0093 mg/L and 0.0030–0.0080 mg/L, respectively, after one day of the amendment, and to 0.0020–0.0050 mg/L and 0.0020–0.0054 mg/L after 240 days of aging. As(III) was oxidized to As(V) and subsequently immobilized via complexation and precipitation, whereas Pb(II) was sequestered via electrostatic attraction and chemical precipitation . The treatment cost was estimated at $31.5/m 3 . The results indicate that complex contaminants in soil can be effectively immobilized using combined amending agents that can interact with the target chemicals and induce synergistic immobilization reactions.

Arsenic and PAHs impose environmental stress on soil microorganisms, yet their compound effects remain poorly understood. While soil microorganisms possess the ability to metabolize As and PAHs, the mechanisms of microbial response are not fully elucidated. In our study, we established two simulated soil systems using soil collected from Xixi Wetland Park grassland, Hangzhou, China. The As-600 Group was contaminated with 600 mg/kg sodium arsenite, while the As-600-PAHs-30 Group received both 600 mg/kg sodium arsenite and 30 mg/kg PAHs (phenanthrene:fluoranthene:benzo[ a ]pyrene = 1:1:1). These systems were operated continuously for 270 days, and microbial responses were assessed using high-throughput sequencing and metagenomic analysis. Our findings revealed that compound contamination significantly promoted the abundance of microbial defense-related genes, with general defense genes increasing by 11.07 % ∼ 74.23 % and specific defense genes increasing by 44.13 % ∼ 55.74 %. The dominate species Rhodococcus adopts these general and specific defense mechanisms to resist compound pollution stress and gain ecological niche advantages, making it a candidate strain for soil remediation. Our study contributes to the assessment of ecological damage caused by As and PAHs from a microbial perspective and provides valuable insights for soil remediation.

Carbendazim, a commonly used fungicide, was identified as a contributor to soil degradation. Despite the extensive use of carbendazim, the degradation mechanisms and the removal process of carbendazim in the soil environment were not yet fully understood. A deeper understanding of the degradation pathways of carbendazim was considered essential for developing effective strategies to mitigate long-term environmental impacts. The degradation of carbendazim using ozone in water and soil environments was investigated with the simulation experiments of ozone exposure in water and soil, and the degradation pathways and removal efficiency of carbendazim in water were also explored under different conditions in the study. The results showed that ozone-induced degradation proceeded in three stages: rapid removal, slow removal, and equilibrium. In water, ozone directly reacted with carbendazim, generating hydroxyl radicals (˙OH), which oxidized carbendazim into intermediates, including 2-aminobenzimidazole, 2-hydroxybenzimidazole, 2-benzimidazolone, and o-phenylenediamine. The intermediates eventually degraded into nontoxic byproducts such as carbon dioxide and water. In soil, ozone treatment enhanced the removal of carbendazim by catalyzing the production of active substances, including hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Increasing the aeration frequency to four times daily significantly improved the efficiency of carbendazim removal, reaching the peak removal rate of 70.4% after 21 days of ozone exposure in the soil. The findings of this study clarified the theoretical mechanisms of ozone treatment for carbendazim remediation, highlighted the critical role of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) in the degradation process, and established a scientific foundation for developing remediation strategies targeting carbendazim-induced soil contamination.

The use of mechanochemistry for the remediation of hexachlorobenzene (HCB)-contaminated soil was investigated. Additives such as alkaline materials, neutral materials, natural minerals, and solid waste were studied to explore their effect on the degradation of hexachlorobenzene in soil with single or combined addition by mechanochemical method. The best combination of materials were determined based on HCB destruction percentage by considering the impact on soil quality, the treatment cost, and the availability of additives. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analysis were conducted for the mechanism studies. The combination of albite and ferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) was found to achieve the best performance in the degradation of HCB with the destruction percentage from 74.3 to 92.5% after 2-h and 6-h reaction, respectively. The developed fracture structure and complex compositions of albite provided abundant reaction sites for mechanochemical degradation of HCB in soil.

Washing is one of the most practical remediation methods for heavy metals contaminated soil, however, conventional washing agents always cause soil acidification and salinization and bring about other negative impacts on soil microbes and plants. This study selected glutamate-N,N-diacetic (GLDA) and polyaspartic (PASP) as biodegradable chelators to remove Cd, Pb and Zn from contaminated farmland soil. The residual metals’ leachability , bioaccessibility , environmental risk and the properties of the soil were investigated after the polluted soil was washed with GLDA and PASP. Results showed that 93.8% of Cd, 87.9% of Pb and 91.9% of Zn were washed out when the concentration of GLDA was 50 mmol/L, pH was 5.5, S/L ratio was 1:10 and contact time was 90 min. Meanwhile, compared with the original soil, the leachability and bioaccessibility of the residual metals were decreased and the stability was increased after washing by GLDA or PASP. The environmental risks of metals were decreased as well by decreasing their bioaccessible concentrations. Moreover, the activity of the soil enzyme was improved after leaching. To sum up, this study provided a theoretical and scientific basis for the treatment of soil heavy metals pollution with biodegradable chelator.

Cr-contaminated soil is a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health because of its high toxicity of Cr(VI), and it needs to be treated properly. In this study, commercial humic acid (HA) was used as an extractant to treat high concentration of Cr contaminated soil (amorphous phase bound state), and the Cr(VI) removal rate was 90.55% under the optimal conditions (pH = 12, concentration 1 g/L, extraction time 24 h, liquid-solid ratio = 20:1). In this process, the remaining Cr species in the HA-treated soil was the most stable and the least mobile, with the highest retained native soil organic matter (SOM) compared to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid (CA). In addition, the economic cost advantage of HA was outstanding at only $55.3 per ton of soil contaminated with high concentrations of Cr(VI). Studies have shown that HA can be a "green" and more cost effective alternative to the traditional extractants EDTA and CA when targeting extraction treatments for high concentration Cr-contaminated soils and other Cr-containing wastes.

The simulated in-vitro gastrointestinal method provides a simple way to evaluate the health risk of human body exposed to soil contaminants. Several in-vitro methods have been successfully established for soil As, Pb, and Cd. However, the method development for soil Cr failed up to now, which could be resulted from alteration in the species of Cr (e.g., Cr(VI)/Cr(III)) caused by the gastrointestinal digestion components, ultimately affecting the accessibility of Cr. This study explored the transformation and bioaccessibility of Cr in two Cr-contaminated soils during the physiologically based extraction test. The water-soluble and exchangeable Cr in soil was dissolved in gastrointestinal tract, accompanied with reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III), and the reduction occurred after the chemical extraction in two soils rather than during the extraction. Pepsin and organic acids in gastric phase could reduce Cr(VI) into Cr(III) and reduction efficiency were 20.4%− 53.0%, while in intestinal phase, pancreatin and bile salt had little effect on the Cr(VI) reduction, instead, more Cr(VI) was released from soil. In the gastric solution, Cr(VI) was mainly present as HCrO 4 - and Cr(III) as free Cr 3+ ion. In the intestinal phase, Cr(VI) mainly occurred as CrO 4 2- and Cr(III) as Cr(OH) 3 (aq). Cr in the soil solid phase was dominated as the precipitates of Cr-Fe oxide, which was hardly extracted. Bioaccessibility of Cr in gastric phase increased as extraction duration increased and decreased in the intestinal phase, the contrary trend was observed for the hazard quotient of Cr in two phases due to Cr(VI)/Cr(III) transformation. This study indicates that the gastrointestinal components could influence the Cr transformation and subsequently affect the Cr bioaccessibility, which would help for a successful establishment of in vitro determination method for soil Cr bioaccessibility.

To develop a new technology to remediate pollution sites stably and effectively, hydrothermal conversion of polluted soil (model soil) into zeolite P for in situ immobilization of Heavy Metals (HM) was carried out. Zeolite P could be synthesized from soil hydrothermally with a large range of Al/Si ratio (0.33–1.0) in 48 h at 200 °C. With immobilizing heavy metals (Cr, Zn and Cd), the crystallization of Zeolite P (Cr-ZP, Zn-ZP and Cd-ZP) was delayed with the order of Cr >Zn >Cd because the stronger the ligand effect of heavy metals have, the more heavily the nucleation and growth were influenced. During immobilization via zeolitization, a self-adaptive structuring behavior was confirmed by EDAX, BET and Rietveld refinement analyses: zeolite P structured more [AlO4]− to immobilize HM because the flexible 8-member-Ring channels (8 mRs) with higher Al/Si ratio could complex with more HM readily. The encapsulated HM occupied the original Na positions (Na1 and Na2) of zeolite P competitively because of their different cation size, e.g., the smallest Cr3+ could substitute all Na1 because Na1 is closer to the Framework Oxygen (FO); the largest Cd2+, however, substituted Na1 (9%) and Na2 (14%) evenly. The shrunken 8 mRs due to heavy metal immobilization also caused different chemical environments for different heavy metals immobilized because the smaller heavy metal cation could get closer to the framework, and also coordinated with more FO.
