Paddy soils are globally distributed and saturated with water long term, which is different from most terrestrial ecosystems. To better understand the environmental risks of antibiotics in paddy soils, this study chose sulfadiazine (SDZ) as a typical antibiotic. We investigated its adsorption behavior and the influence of soil solution properties, such as pH conditions, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ionic concentrations (IC), and the co-existence of Cu2+. The results indicated that (1) changes in soil solution pH and IC lower the adsorption of SDZ in paddy soils. (2) Increase of DOC facilitated the adsorption of SDZ in paddy soils. (3) Cu2+co-existence increased the adsorption of SDZ on organic components, but decreased the adsorption capacity of clay soil for SDZ. (4) Further FTIR and SEM analyses indicated that complexation may not be the only form of Cu2+and SDZ co-adsorption in paddy soils. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that soil solution properties and co-existent cations determine the sorption behavior of SDZ in paddy soils.Keywords:sulfadiazine;Cu2+co-existence;paddy soils;adsorption;soil properties

Thermal desorption (TD) remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated sites is known for its high energy consumption and cost implications. The key to solving this issue lies in analyzing the PAHs desorption process, defining remediation endpoints, and developing prediction models to prevent excessive remediation. Establishing an accurate prediction model for remediation efficiency, which involves a systematic consideration of soil properties, TD parameters, and PAH characteristics, poses a significant challenge. This study employed a machine learning approach for predicting the remediation efficiency based on batch experiment results. The results revealed that the extreme gradient boosting (XGB) model yielded the most accurate predictions (R 2 = 0.9832). The importance of features in the prediction process was quantified. A model optimization scheme was proposed, which involved integrating features based on their relevance, importance, and partial dependence. This integration not only reduced the number of input features but also enhanced prediction accuracy (R 2 = 0.9867) without eliminating any features. The optimized XGB model was validated using soils from sites, demonstrating a prediction error of less than 30%. The optimized XGB model aids in identifying the most optimal conditions for thermal desorption to maximize the remediation efficiency of PAH-contaminated sites under relative cost and energy-saving conditions.

Growing evidence has indicated that mercury sulfide nanoparticles (HgS NPs) are the potential precursors for neurotoxic methylmercury. But how and which soil components affect HgS NP retention remains unclear. Here, we examined the retention of uncoated and humic acid coated HgS NPs in 18 natural soils with varied properties. Our results suggested that the K r values (retention coefficients) for uncoated and humic acid HgS NPs were 2.46 × 10 3 to 8.32 × 10 5 L kg − 1 and 3.00 × 10 3 to 2.73 × 10 5 L kg − 1 , respectively. Soil properties (i.e., electrical conductivity, organic matter (OM), oxalate-extractable Fe and Mn) significantly affected the uncoated HgS NP retention, accounting for 69% of the variability in the K r values. Meanwhile, OM exhibited a tendency to reduce coated HgS NP retention. Importantly, HgS NPs exhibited significant dissolution in representative soil porewaters. These findings highlight the soil property-dependent retention of HgS NPs in realistic environment.

Calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) has been proven to oxidize various organic pollutants when they exist as a single class of compounds. However, there is a lack of research on the potential of unactivated CaO 2 to treat mixed chlorinated organic pollutants in soils. This study examined the potential of CaO 2 in treating soils co-contaminated with p-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB) and p-chloromethane cresol (PCMC). The effects of CaO 2 dosage and treatment duration on the rate of degradation were investigated. Furthermore, the collateral effects of the treatment on treated soil characteristics were studied. The result showed that unactivated CaO 2 could oxidize mixed chlorinated organic compounds in wet soils. More than 69% of the pollutants in the wet soil were mineralized following 21 days of treatment with 3% (w/w) CaO 2 . The hydroxyl radicals played a significant role in the degradation process among the other decomposition products of hydrogen peroxide. Following the oxidation process, the treated soil pH was increased due to the formation of calcium hydroxide. Soil organic matter , cation exchange capacity, soil organic carbon , total nitrogen, and certain soil enzyme activities of the treated soil were decreased. However, the collateral effects of the system on electrical conductivity, available phosphorus, and particle size distribution of the treated soil were not significant. Likewise, since no significant release of heavy metals was seen in the treated soil matrix, the likelihood of metal ions as co-pollutants after treatment was low. Therefore, CaO 2 can be a better alternative for treating industrial sites co-contaminated with chlorinated organic compounds.
