This work was conducted to study the effect of soil pH (4.0, 6.0, and 8.0) on the transport, fractionation, and oxidation of trivalent chromium [Cr(III)]. Variation in pH altered soil chemical and mineralogical properties such as zeta potential, cation exchange capacity and redox potential of natural soil. Breakthrough curves and batch sorption experiments coupled with fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses demonstrated that the easy mobility of Cr(III) in pH 4.0 soil was dominated by the limited coordination effect. The high retention of Cr(III) in pH 8.0 soil was mainly ascribed to the hydrolysis. Incubation experiments indicated that the proportions of Cr in exchangeable fraction decreased with increasing of soil pH and incubation time, and kinetics analysis revealed that the time dependent transformation was controlled by mass transfer and chemical processes (e.g., hydrolysis, ion association). The XPS confirmed the oxidation of Cr(III) in pH 8.0 soil during the incubation period. Furthermore, the content of toxic hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] was positively associated with time and initial concentration of Cr(III) released. These results revealed the hazardousness of Cr(III) in soil contaminated simultaneously by inorganic acid and alkali.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a toxic heavy metal and its mobility and bioaccessibility in soils are influenced by soil properties. In this study, the soil pH and organic carbon contents of Ultisol , Alfisol , and Inceptisol were adjusted before they were polluted with 230 mg kg −1 Cr(VI). Alkaline digestion, sequential extraction, and an in vitro experiment were conducted to study the valence state, species, and bioaccessibility of Cr in the soils. The results showed that a high soil pH was not favorable for reduction of Cr(VI); therefore the Cr(VI) and exchangeable Cr contents were positively related to soil pH. Soil organic carbon promoted the reduction of Cr(VI). Almost all Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) when the soil organic carbon content reached 10 g kg −1 . Chromium bioaccessibility in simulated gastric and intestinal phase solutions was influenced by Cr(VI) and Cr(III) adsorption/desorption, dissolution/precipitation, and redox reactions. Chromium bioaccessibility differences between the gastric and intestinal phases were associated with the Cr(VI)/Cr(III) ratio. Acidic conditions and a high organic carbon content promoted the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). When soil pH was increased from 4.01 to 5.85, Cr(VI) in Alfisol without the addition of humic acid increased from 96.38 to 174.78 mg kg −1 , the exchangeable Cr proportion increased from 9.7% to 22.6%, and Cr bioaccessibility increased from 41.29% to 49.14% in the gastric phase and from 41.32% to 48.24% in the intestinal phase. When the organic carbon content increased from 3.95 to 9.28 g kg −1 in Alfisol, Cr(VI) content decreased from 167.66 to 20.52 mg kg −1 , which led to a decrease in Cr bioaccessibility from 49.15% to 13.8% in the gastric phase and from 45.85% to 7.67% in the intestinal phase. Therefore, acidic conditions and increasing soil organic carbon levels can reduce the health risk posed by Cr in soils.

The vertical migration behavior of antibiotics in long-term manure-fertilized soils during rainfall remains unclear. Here, we examined antibiotics in soil profiles (0–60 cm) and leachates following each rainfall event throughout a year for three soils (acidic, neutral, and calcareous) with a 13-year history of manure application. The total concentrations of all the antibiotics in the soil profile (11.04–190.32 μg/kg) and the yearly cumulative load of these antibiotics in the leachate (4070–6900 ng/m 2 ) were significantly higher in the acidic and neutral soils than in the calcareous soil. Rainfall caused the migration of antibiotics (especially tetracyclines, quinolones, and sulfonamides) from soil to leachate, while the migration dynamics of some antibiotics differed among the three soil profiles. Random forest analysis revealed that precipitation, soil organic carbon content, pH, sand content, and the partition coefficient ( K ow ) of antibiotics were the key factors influencing the migration of antibiotics. Environmental risk assessment suggested that antibiotics in leachates pose low toxicity risks to aquatic organisms. Nevertheless, the vertical migration of some antibiotics (e.g., sulfachaloropyridazine and sufamerazine) was positively correlated with the dissemination of high-risk antibiotic resistance genes in leachates. This study advances our understanding of the precipitation-caused vertical migration of antibiotics in soil exposed to manure application, considering future increases in severe rainfall events.

Manganese toxicity is a major obstacle to agriculture in acid soils. Dark pericarp disease (DPD) is a newly spread physiological disorder induced by excess Mn in litchi, leading to undesirable fruit appearance and substantial economic loss. In this work, broadcast of alkaline soil conditioner in winter, followed by foliar sprays of ascorbic acid and sulfur solution at fruit development, was adopted to examine the effect of these combinations on DPD alleviation in a litchi orchard, with DPD morbidities of 70~85% in recent ten years. The combination of soil conditioner broadcast and foliar water spray was used as the control. At harvest, DPD incidence was significantly decreased by sulfur spray (3.3 ± 1.0%) and slightly reduced by ascorbic acid spray (10.7 ± 8.0%) compared to the control (12.9 ± 7.6%). Soil pH and available Mn were significantly increased and reduced by the soil conditioner broadcast. Sulfur spray significantly inhibited Mn uptake but enhanced the accumulation of Mg, Ca, sugars and cyanidin-3-rutinoside in the pericarp, leading to improved fruit pigmentation. Antioxidase activities were regulated to resist Mn stress by sulfur spray. The spray of ascorbic acid could not mitigate DPD as expected, probably due to the dose used. Conclusively, this study provides a practicable approach to mitigate Mn phytoavailability in acid soils. Keywords:litchi;Mn stress;soil pH;phenolic compound;antioxidant enzyme

Investigation of the inherent relationship between soil physicochemical properties and pollutant's bioaccessibility (BAc) by analyzing different soil types may produce erroneous results or bias, owing to the complexity of natural soil characteristics. However, use of single factor analysis (e.g., soil pH, organic matter) facilitates evaluation of the transition. In this study, the inherent relationship between soil properties and the BAc of molybdenum (Mo) was evaluated in two typical variable-charge soils (Ferralosol and Ferrosol) and constant-charge soils (Alfisol and Inceptisol) spiked with Mo after adjusting their pH and organic carbon content. The Unified Bioaccessibility Research Group of Europe (BARGE) Method (UBM) was applied to evaluate the BAc of Mo in the gastric and intestinal phase (GP and IP, respectively). Isothermal adsorption experiment, Tessier sequential extraction, and field emission scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS) analysis were conducted on these spiked soils. The results indicated that the BAc of Mo in IP (27.42–80.41%) was significantly higher than that in GP (2.52–28.53%). A significantly lower level of BAc of Mo was found in the variable-charge soils, when compared with that in the constant-charge soils. Furthermore, significant negative correlations were identified between the BAc and adsorption of Mo, which decreased with soil pH. These negative correlations can be attributed to the increase in soil negative charge density and enhancement of Mo desorption by hydroxyl, which reinforce the repulsion between Mo and soil particles with increasing soil pH; this was further confirmed by the decrease in Mo adsorption with Alfisol pH. The Mo fractions and FESEM-EDS patterns confirmed that the BAc of Mo in GP was negatively correlated with soil organic carbon (SOC) content, possibly owing to an increase in Mo retention by SOC. These findings indicated that the health risk of Mo contamination in low pH and SOC-rich variable-charge soil is relatively low, thus providing references for rationalizing risk assessment and remediating Mo-polluted soil.

Industrial soil is susceptible to acid or alkali pollution, but studies focused on the remediation of such soil are still limited. This manuscript investigated the neutralization effect of five agents (hydrochloric acid, citric acid, ferrous sulfate, calcium superphosphate and raw gypsum) to alkali polluted soil. The results showed that regarding the initial pH after the neutralizing agent addition, it was better to set it lower than the target, as the pH would rebound. None of the five agents caused an obvious increase in the heavy metal contents of the leachates, but they all caused an increase in electrical conductivity, which indicated an increase in soil salinity. The leachates showed a luminous gain toVibrio fischeri. However, remediation with hydrochloric acid would cause significant inhibition of germination and root elongation of pakchoi. In addition, the addition of neutralizing agents reshaped the soil microbial community structure in different patterns. Soils treated with hydrochloric acid and ferrous sulfate seemed to improve the microbial richness. The neutralization might be favorable for the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which usually coexist in industrial contaminated soil. In general, the neutralization of alkaline industrial soils using ferrous sulfate, superphosphate and gypsum brought minimal environmental risk, among which ferrous sulfate was the first recommendation in industrial soil after a comprehensive comparison. Keywords:soil pH neutralization;industrial soil remediation;heavy metal release;16S rRNA sequencing

Improving saline-alkali soil requires cost-efficient and stable technologies. In this study, a novel technology combining in-situ super-stable mineralization with Ca-bentonite was successfully applied to ameliorate saline-alkali soil. A simulation experiment was conducted on Ca-bentonite in solution to validate its feasibility, and in-situ mineralization using humic acid, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O, and Ca-bentonite was performed to treat saline-alkali soil. Additionally, climate modeling and field experiments were employed to investigate the effects of this technology on soil physicochemical properties, crop growth, and crop yield. Under natural conditions, Ca-bentonite can transform into Na-bentonite via cation exchange with Na + . The results from the in-situ mineralization experiment showed that the soil pH, total content of CO 3 2− and HCO 3 − , Na + content, electrical conductivity, and bulk density decreased from approximately 10.30 to below 9.00, 7.81 to 1.53 g/kg, 7.20 to 1.51 g/kg, 2741 to 552 μS/cm, and 1.63 to 1.24 g/cm 3 , respectively. Furthermore, the germination rate of corn increased from 0 % to 83.3 % in climate simulation experiments. Field trials conducted in Inner Mongolia and Jilin, China, further demonstrated significant improvements in soil properties. The seedling emergence rates for corn and oats significantly increased, rising from 0 % to over 85 % and 95 %, respectively. Correspondingly, crop yields reached 323 kg/hm 2 for corn and 182 kg/hm 2 for oats. Together, our study introduces a novel, cost-effective, and efficient technology to enhance crop growth by mitigating soil salinity and alkalinity. This approach provides a new perspective for alleviating salt-alkali stress and contributes to the advancement of healthy and sustainable agricultural practices.

Soil N-fixing bacteria communities (SNB) can increase soil N availability, which can facilitate invasions of many kinds of invasive plant species. Meanwhile, variability in the forms of anthropogenic N deposition can mediate obvious shifts in both soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities (especially SNB). This can alter the soil micro-ecological mechanisms of plant invasions via changes in soil characteristics and soil microbial communities, especially SNB. This study uses next-generation high throughput sequencing technology to provide insight into the effects of invasion by Amaranthus retroflexus L. on the structure and diversity of SNB under different forms of simulated N deposition (SND). Soil pH under A. retroflexus invasion under various forms of SND was 8.08% lower than controls under a NH 4 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), 15.15% lower than controls under a NO 3 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), and 6.57% lower than controls under CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N and Mix-N treatments ( P < 0.05). Meanwhile, soil pH was one of the most important environmental variables explaining changes in the structure and diversity of SNB. The total number of species of SNB under A. retroflexus invasion was approximately 13.13% higher than controls for the NH 4 -N treatment ( P > 0.05), 11.00% higher than controls for the NO 3 -N treatment ( P > 0.05), 39.42% higher than controls for the CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N treatment ( P < 0.05), and 27.67 higher than controls for the Mix-N treatment ( P < 0.05). The positive effects mediated by the combined treatments of A. retroflexus invasion and SND may be ascribed to enhanced soil nutrient content (especially N), which can enhance the abundance of the nifH gene. The effects of A. retroflexus invasion on the total number of species of SNB under organic and mixed-N addition were greater than under inorganic N addition. This may be a consequence of a disturbance of the balance of inorganic to organic N for SND, as a result of the addition of a single form of inorganic N, which can diminish the stimulatory effects of soil nutrient content on SNB under inorganic N. Another potential cause of this pattern may be stronger acidification under inorganic N addition, which can exert more pronounced effects on SNB. LEfSe analysis showed that some species changed significantly under A. retroflexus invasion in the presence of SND (i.e., Rhodobacteraceae under NH 4 -N and Proteobacteria under CO(NH 2 ) 2 -N). Thus, A. retroflexus invasion in the presence of SND caused obvious shifts in certain species of SNB and increased the total number of species of SNB in particular, to facilitate its further invasion.

Cadmium (Cd) is the most concerning soil pollutant , and a threat to human health, especially in China. The in-situ immobilization of Cadmium by amendments is one of the most widely adopted methods to remedy soil contamination. The study was designed to evaluate the effect of organo-chemical amendments on soil Cd bioavailability and nitrogen cycling microbes under continuous planting of rice ( Oryza sativa ) and pak choi ( Brassica chinensis L. ). The experiment was carried out using four amendments, Lime, Zeolite, Superphosphate , and Biochar, at two different ratios; M1: at the ratio of 47:47:5:1, and M2 at the ratio of 71:23:5:1, respectively. Moreover, both M1 and M2 were enriched at four levels (T1: 0.5%; T2: 1%; T3: 2%; T4: 4%). Results showed that compared with CK (Cd enriched soils), the yield of rice under treatments of M1T1 and M2T1 increased by 8.93% and 8.36%, respectively. While the biomass (fresh weight) of pak choi under M1 and M2 amendments increased by 2.52–2.98 times and 0.76–2.89 times respectively, under enrichment treatments T1, T2, and T3. The total Cd concentrations in rice grains treated with M1T3 and M2T3 decreased by 89.25% and 93.16%, respectively, compared with CK. On the other hand, the total Cd concentrations in pak choi under M1T3 and M2T2 decreased by 92.86% and 90.23%, respectively. The results showed that soil pH was the main factor affecting Cd bioavailability in rice and pak choi. The Variance partitioning analysis (VPA) of rice and pak choi showed that soil pH was the most significant contributing factor. In the rice season, the contribution of soil pH (P) on Cd bioavailability was 10.14% (P = 0.102), and in the pak choi season, the contribution of soil pH was 8.38% (P = 0.133). Furthermore, the abundance of ammonia oxidation and denitrifying microorganisms had significantly correlation with soil pH and exchange Cd. In rice season, when the enrichment level of amendments increased from 0.5% (T1) to 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOA, AOB, nirK , nirS and nosZ (І) tended to decrease. While in pak choi season, when the enrichment level increased at the level of 0.5% (T1), 1% (T2), and 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOB, nirS, and nosZ (І) increased. Additionally, the gene abundance of AOA and nirK showed a reduction in the pak choi season contrasting to rice. And the mixed amendment M2 performed better at reducing Cd uptake than M1, which may have correlation with the ratio of lime and zeolite in them. Finally, we conclude that between these two amendments, when applied at a moderate level M2 type performed better than M1 in reducing Cd uptake, and also showed positive effects on both gene abundance and increase soil pH.

Purpose This study aims to evaluate the effects of chitosan and D-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (F16BP) trisodium salt on the acidity of selected Ultisols (Ultisol-QY1, Ultisol-QY2, Ultisol-LX, and Ultisol-YT) and their resistance to soil acidification. Materials and methods The effect of adsorbed chitosan and F16BP on soil acidity was evaluated by interacting different concentrations of the organic substrates with 4.0 g soil under different agitation times (2 to 264 h, 200 rpm, 25 °C). Also, the soils were amended with the organic substrate and incubated for 14 days to determine their effects on soil physicochemical properties. Afterwards, the soil solid phases from the adsorption studies and incubated soil were acidified with different concentrations of nitric acid to simulate soil acidification and activate soil aluminum (Al). Results and discussion The adsorption interactions of chitosan and F16BP with Ultisols demonstrated different potentials in their ability to displace mineral-bound hydroxyl groups and ameliorate soil acidity. The R-PO 4 3− group of F16BP was more effective in displacing the hydroxyl groups through a ligand exchange mechanism and thus showed greater ameliorating effect on soil acidity than chitosan. Compared to lime and F16BP, chitosan-treated soils exhibited the least decrease in pH during soil acidification due to the significant improvement in soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC). Specifically, when amended with chitosan, the pHBC of Ultisol-QY1, Ultisol-QY2, Ultisol-LX, and Ultisol-YT was increased by 262.2%, 88.9%, 337.7%, and 320.6% as opposed to 22.1%, 18.4%, 27.4%, and 83.0% for these Ultisols by F16BP, respectively. Thus, F16BP is a better material to improve soil pH, while chitosan is a better option to improve soil pHBC, inhibit soil acidification, and retard the activation of phytotoxic Al 3+ . By the nature of their functional groups, we deduced that F16BP ameliorated soil acidity by displacing the hydroxyl groups on soils due to adsorption of R-PO 4 3− group through ligand exchange mechanism, while chitosan directly improved pHBC by providing abundant R-NH 2 groups to accommodate excess exogenous H + . Conclusions Chitosan is a promising soil amendment material for use in the management of acidic soils due to its high N content and potential to inhibit soil acidification. Given the readily available raw materials and ease of producing chitosan, long-term incubation studies should be carried out to assess the effect of chitosan on soil pH variations, carbon, and N mineralization.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is widespread in various ecosystems and is colonized by microbes that form biofilms with compositions and functions. However, compared with aquatic environments, the soil environment has been poorly studied in terms of the taxonomic composition of microbial communities and the factors influencing the community structure of microbes in the plastisphere. In the present study, a microcosm experiment was conducted to investigate the plastisphere bacterial communities of MP (polyvinyl chloride, PVC) in soils with different pH (4.62, 6.5, and 7.46) and arsenic (As) contents (13 and 74 mg kg −1 ). Bacterial communities in the plastisphere were dominated by Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, with distinct compositions and structures compared with soil bacterial communities. Soil pH and As content significantly affected the plastisphere bacterial communities. Constrained analysis of principal coordinates and a structural equation model demonstrated that soil pH had a stronger influence on the dissimilarity and diversity of bacterial communities than did soil As content. Soil pH affected As speciation in soil and on MP. The concentration of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) was significantly higher on MP than that in soil, indicating that As methylation occurred on MP. These results suggest that environmental fluctuations govern plastisphere bacterial communities with cascading effects on biogeochemical cycling of As in the soil ecosystems.

Recently, biochar is widely used as a soil amendment to improve soil properties, which might affect the fate and behavior of contaminants in soil. In this study, we investigated the effect of biochar on the migration of tetracycline (TC) in soil and their combined impacts on microbiome. Due to the strong interaction between soil and TC, adsorption, rather than photolysis or biodegradation, was the dominating dissipation way of TC in soil. Moreover, biochar could promote the vertical migration of TC through the decreased soil bulk density and its lower adsorption capacity. After 90-day incubation, only slight impact of TC on soil bacterial community was observed due to the rapid dissipation of TC in soil, whereas more available C supply induced by biochar significantly altered bacterial community via the enhancement of copiotrophic bacteria. Besides, biochar could decrease the soil pH and thus change the composition of fungal community. The effect of TC on fungal community was partially counteracted by biochar, which could adsorb part of TC and thus decrease the contact of TC with microorganisms . This work will improve our understanding of the fate of organic pollutants and evolution of microbiome in soil where biochar servers as soil amendment.
