The development of a capsaicin detection system that integrates facile preliminary evaluation with high sensitivity and accuracy across a wide detection range is crucial for the discrimination of gutter oil and the protection of human health. In this study, we constructed a novel colorimetric/SERS dual-mode detection system utilizing peroxidase-like Au@Pt nanoparticles (NPs) that exhibit SERS-activity. The Au@Pt NPs feature a spherical gold nanoparticle core with synapse-like platinum nanoparticles distributed intermittently on their surface, this structure enhances the catalytic activity of the PtNPs and the SERS activity of the AuNPs, making them ideal for designing colorimetric/SERS dual-mode probes. Based on the colorimetric assay, we achieved a capsaicin detection range from 1 to 10,000 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.48 μM, as determined by absorption spectroscopy analysis. Additionally, a linear calibration curve for capsaicin ranging from 10 −9 to 10 −5 M was established using the SERS method, yielding an LOD of 7.38 nM. By integrating the advantages of facile detection through colorimetric analysis with the high-sensitivity trace assay provided by SERS, this proposed dual-mode detection system demonstrates excellent sensitivity, reliability, selectivity, and wide detection range compared to previous probes and methods. Consequently, this method can serve as an efficient tool for monitoring oil quality.

Rapid simultaneous detection of multi-component adulteration markers can improve the accuracy of identification of gutter cooking oil in edible oil, which is made possible by broad-spectrum antibody (bs-mAb). This study used capsaicinoids (CPCs) and gingerol derivatives (GDs) as adulteration markers, and two broad-spectrum haptens (bs-haptens) were designed and synthesized based on a reverse design strategy of molecular docking. Electrostatic potential (ESP) and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) preparation verified the strategy's feasibility. To further investigate the recognition mechanism, five other reported antigens and mAbs were also used. Finally, the optimal combination (Hapten 5-OVA/1-F12) and key functional groups (f-groups) were determined. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) for CPCs-GDs was between 88.13 and 499.16 ng/mL. Meanwhile, a preliminary lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) study made practical monitoring possible. The study provided a theoretical basis for the virtual screening of bs-haptens and simultaneous immunoassay of multiple exogenous markers to monitor gutter oil rapidly and accurately.

In this study, gutter oil biodiesel-based polyols (GOBP) and a reactive-type flame retardant named diethyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-aminomethylphosphonate (BHAPE) were both synthesized. Subsequently, gutter oil biodiesel-based flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foams (BPUFs) were prepared with GOBP, BHAPE, aluminum hydroxide (an additive-type flame retardant) and polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate. The properties of the BPUFs, including density, thermal conductivity, compressive properties, chemical component, morphology, thermal stability, limiting oxygen index, cone calorimetry testing, char residues stability were characterized. Among them, BPUF-AB owning 6.97 wt% of GOBP, 18.59 wt% of BHAPE and 39.77 wt% of aluminum hydroxide obtained a lower density of 0.097 g/cm 3 , a lower thermal conduction of 0.048 W/(m * k) and the highest compressive strength of 187 ± 13 kPa. Fire testing revealed a highest limiting oxygen index value of 30.1% and passed the UL-94 standard test. Cone calorimetry testing revealed that the peak heat release rate and peak smoke production release of BPUF-AB were reduced by 51.08% and 57.10%, respectively. Meanwhile, the total heat release rate and total smoke production were respectively decreased by 36.88% and 40.79%. The results indicate that BPUFs derived from gutter oil biodiesel are prosperously potential biomaterials with good thermal stability for fire insulation porous materials in future architecture applications.

Gutter oil, which poses a serious threat to human health and has generated widespread attention in recent years, is misused as cooking oil, creating a major food safety concern. Capsaicin has been identified as a promising indicator for the detection of gutter oil. Hence, in this study, we introduce a novel hybrid approach for capsaicin detection that combines magnetic molecular imprinting (MMIP) with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology to rapidly and accurately identify gutter oil. A magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer is developed with the incorporation of purified halloysite nanotubes, which provide a large specific surface area. The resulting product, magnetic halloysite molecularly imprinted polymers (MHNTs@MIPs), serves as a specific isolation material for the enrichment of capsaicin from complex matrices. The Ag NPs@Si (silver nanoparticles deposited on a silicon wafer surface) and Au NPs (gold nanoparticles), known for their excellent signal enhancement capabilities, work synergistically as the SERS substrate. Substantially enhanced SERS peaks are observed at 1173 cm −1 , indicating the potential of this method for capsaicin detection and gutter oil identification. A strong log-linear relationship between SERS intensity and the logarithm of capsaicin concentration is established across a wide range of 0.05–100 μM, with a detection limit of 67.7 nM. Furthermore, for both simulated and real gutter oil samples, capsaicin recovery rates of 95.5%–110.3% and 96.3%–104.9% were achieved using the SERS sensor, demonstrating good consistency with certified high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results. Therefore, this SERS sensor can be served as efficient method for detecting capsaicin and monitoring oil quality.

In order to address the widespread concerns with food safety such as adulteration and forgery in the edible oil field, this study developed a fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) based on a monoclonal antibody in a homogeneous solution system for determination of capsaicinoids in gutter cooking oil by using chemically stable capsaicinoids as an adulteration marker. The prepared fluoresceinthiocarbamyl ethylenediamine (EDF) was coupled with capsaicinoid hapten C, and the synthesized tracer was purified by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and showed good binding to the monoclonal antibody CPC Ab-D8. The effects of concentration of tracer and recognition components, type and pH of buffer and incubation time on the performance of FPIA were studied. The linear range (IC 20 to IC 80 ) was 3.97–97.99 ng/mL, and the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) was 19.73 ng/mL, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 1.56 ng/mL. The recovery rates of corn germ oil, soybean oil and peanut blend oil were in the range of 94.7–132.3%. The experimental results showed that the fluorescence polarization detection system could realize the rapid detection of capsaicinoids, and had the potential to realize on-site identification of gutter cooking oil. As a universal monoclonal antibody, CPC Ab-D8 can also specifically identify capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin, so the proposed method can be used to quickly monitor for the presence of gutter cooking oil in normal cooking oil.
