Hydrogels have attracted widespread attention in anticounterfeiting due to their unique physical/chemical properties and designability. However, hydrogels’ poor mechanical properties and sluggish response to chemical stimuli pose challenges for their wide application. A fluorescent tough organohydrogel capable of freeform writing of information is reported in this work. By incorporation of the fluorescent monomer 7-methylacryloxy-4-methylcoumarin into the polyacrylamide network in a covalently cross-linked manner while intertwining with the carboxymethyl cellulose sodium network, a fluorescent tough organohydrogel with a dual-network structure is prepared. The organohydrogel shows acid–base-mediated adjustable fluorescence through the transformation of fluorescent monomers. Ion printing and electrical stimulation design achieved free information storage and encryption. In addition, the prepared organohydrogel has good antifreezing properties and can be encrypted and decrypted at subzero temperatures. The encrypted information in the organohydrogel can be read only after UV-light irradiation. These patterned fluorescent organohydrogels should find applications in protected message displays for improved information security.

Conductive hydrogels have shown great potential in the field of flexible strain sensors. However, their application is greatly limited due to the low conductivity and poor mechanical properties at subzero temperatures. Herein, an ultrastretchable, tough, antifreezing, and conductive cellulose hydrogel was fabricated by grafting acrylonitrile and acrylamide copolymers onto the cellulose chains in the presence of zinc chloride using ceric ammonium nitrate as the initiator. The resulting hydrogel exhibited ultrastretchability (1730%), excellent tensile strength (160 kPa), high elasticity (90%), good toughness (1074.7 kJ/m3), and fatigue resistance property due to the existence of dipole–dipole and multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions on the hydrogel network. In addition, the introduced zinc chloride endowed the cellulose-based hydrogel with remarkable electric conductivity (1.54 S/m) and excellent antifreezing performance (−33 °C). Finally, the hydrogel showed high sensitivity and stability to monitor human activities. In summary, this work presented a facile strategy to construct conductive hydrogel with excellent antifreezing and mechanical properties simultaneously, which showed great potential for wearable strain sensors.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels with high mechanical strength, programmable deformation, and simple preparation are essential for their practical applications. Here the preparation of tough hydrogels with programmable and complex shape deformations is reported. Janus hydrogels with different compositions and hydrophilic natures on the two surfaces are first prepared, and they exhibit reversible bending/unbending upon swelling/deswelling processes. More impressively, the deformation rate and extent of the hydrogels can further be easily controlled through an extremely simple and versatile ion dip-dyeing (IDD) and/or ion transfer printing (ITP) method. By selectively printing proper patterns on 1D gel strips, 2D gel sheets and 3D gel structures, the transformations from 1D to 2D, 2D to 3D, and 3D to more complicated 3D shapes can be achieved after swelling the ion-patterned hydrogels in water. The swelling-deformable Janus and ion-patterned hydrogels with high mechanical strengths and programmable deformations can find many practical applications, such as soft machines.

Toughness, strechability and compressibility for hydrogels were ordinarily balanced for their use as mechanically responsive materials. For example, macromolecular microsphere composite hydrogels with chemical crosslinking exhibited excellent compression strength and strechability, but poor tensile stress. Here, a novel strategy for the preparation of a super-tough, ultra-stretchable and strongly compressive hydrogel was proposed by introducing core–shell latex particles (LPs) as crosslinking centers for inducing efficient aggregation of hydrophobic chains. The core–shell LPs always maintained a spherical shape due to the presence of a hard core even by an external force and the soft shell could interact with hydrophobic chains due to hydrophobic interactions. As a result, the hydrogels reinforced by core–shell LPs exhibited not only a high tensile strength of 1.8 MPa and dramatic elongation of over 20 times, but also an excellent compressive performance of 13.5 MPa at a strain of 90%. The Mullins effect was verified for the validity of core–shell LP-reinforced hydrogels by inducing aggregation of hydrophobic chains. The novel strategy strives to provide a better avenue for designing and developing a new generation of hydrophobic association tough hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties.

Facile preparation, rapid actuating, and versatile actions are great challenges in exploring new kinds of hydrogel actuators. In this paper, we presented a facile sticking method to prepare Janus bilayer and multilayer hydrogel actuators that benefited from a special tough and adhesive PAA-clay hydrogel. Combining physical and chemical cross-linking reagents, we endowed the PAA gel with both toughness and adhesion. This PAA gel was reinforced by further cross-linking with Fe3+. These two hydrogels with different cross-linking densities exhibited different swelling capabilities and moduli in the media manipulated by pH and ionic strength, thus acting as promising candidates for soft actuators. On the basis of these gels, we designed hydrogel actuators of rapid response in several minutes and precisely controlled actuating direction by sticking two hydrogel layers together. Elaborate soft actuators such as bidirectional bending flytrap, gel hand with grasp, open, and gesturing actions as well as word-writing actuator were prepared. This method could be generalized by using other stimuli-responsive hydrogels combined with the adhesive PAA gel, which would open a new way to programmable and versatile soft actuators.

3D-printing tough conductive hydrogels (TCHs) with complex structures is still a challenging task in related fields due to their inherent contrasting multinetworks, uncontrollable and slow polymerization of conductive components. Here we report an orthogonal photochemistry-assisted printing (OPAP) strategy to make 3D TCHs in one-pot via the combination of rational visible-light-chemistry design and reliable extrusion printing technique. This orthogonal chemistry is rapid, controllable, and simultaneously achieve the photopolymerization of EDOT and phenol-coupling reaction, leading to the construction of tough hydrogels in a short time ( t gel ~30 s). As-prepared TCHs are tough, conductive, stretchable, and anti-freezing. This template-free 3D printing can process TCHs to arbitrary structures during the fabrication process. To further demonstrate the merits of this simple OPAP strategy and TCHs, 3D-printed TCHs hydrogel arrays and helical lines, as proofs-of-concept, are made to assemble high-performance pressure sensors and a temperature-responsive actuator. It is anticipated that this one-pot rapid, controllable OPAP strategy opens new horizons to tough hydrogels.

Adhesive, tough, and conductive hydrogels have broad application prospects in wearable and flexible sensors. The construction of adhesive-tough hydrogels still remains a challenge. Here, for the first time, we develop Janus adhesive-tough hydrogel by a medium-guided (filter paper absorbing HAuCl 4 ) diffusion method, followed in-situ generation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in gelatin-polyacrylamide (GA) double network hydrogel. The as-generated AuNPs in the adhesive surface restrict the formation of triple helixes of gelatin, thus enhancing the adhesion to various materials such as steel, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), ceramic, wood, stone, rubber, copper, glass, and skin. The tough side maintains double network structure, resulting in high toughness with good recovery ability. The thickness of the adhesive surface can be regulated by adjusting the diffusion time and the concentration of HAuCl 4 . By adding lithium chloride (LiCl), the hydrogel can be applied as strain sensor to monitor human motion such as finger, cervical vertebrae, wrist, and elbow. These findings may contribute to the design of Janus adhesive-tough hydrogels and provide a model for strain sensors.

The emerging stretchable and tough hydrogels find their extraordinary contributions in widespread use. However, the applicability of existing tough hydrogels in harsh environments like highly acidic stomachs has remained a challenge. Here, we develop superior stretchable and tough P(AA -co- AAm)/SiO 2 hybrid hydrogels through radiation-induced polymerization and crosslinking in the presence of acids. The performance of the nanocomposite gels was optimized by altering fabrication variables including acid concentration, monomer composition and absorbed dose. The mechanic tests show that the protonated hybrid hydrogels displayed a high elongation at break (1919%), fracture strength (117 kPa), and compressive strength at 50% strain (126 kPa). These values are superior to those of conventional polyelectrolyte hydrogels and expect to significantly broaden the application. The proposed strategy is quite general and offers an alternative strategy to develop tough hydrogels.

Three-dimensional (3D) extrusion bioprinting has emerged as one of the most promising biofabrication technologies for preparing biomimetic tissue-like constructs. The successful construction of cell-laden constructs majorly relies on the development of proper bioinks with excellent printability and cytocompatibility. Bioinks based on gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) have been widely explored due to the excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability and the presence of the arginine–glycine–aspartic acid (RGD) sequences for cell adhesion. However, such bioinks usually require low-temperature or ionic cross-linking systems to solidify the extruded hydrogel structures, which results in complex processes and limitations to certain applications. Moreover, many current hydrogel-based bioinks, even after chemical cross-linking, hardly possess the required strength to resist the mechanical loads during the implantation procedure. Herein, we report a self-healing hydrogel bioink based on GelMA and oxidized dextran (OD) for the direct printing of tough and fatigue-resistant cell-laden constructs at room temperature without any template or cross-linking agents. Enabled by dynamic Schiff base chemistry, the mixed GelMA/OD solution showed the characteristics of a dynamic hydrogel with shear-thinning and self-supporting behavior, which allows bridging the 5 mm gap and efficient direct bioprinting of complex constructs with high shape fidelity. After photo-cross-linking, the resulting tissue constructs exhibited excellent low cell damage, high cell viability, and enhanced mechanical strength. Moreover, the GelMA/OD construct could resist up to 95% compressive deformation without any breakage and was able to maintain 80% of the original Young’s modulus during long-term loading (50 cycles). It is believed that our GelMA/OD bioink would expand the potential of GelMA-based bioinks in applications such as tissue engineering and pharmaceutical screening.

Adhesives can stably hold adherent components together. However, a simple design of a high-performance printable tough adhesive (PTA) with instant fatigue-resistant adhesion on various substrates is still a significant challenge. Here, the authors report a rapid design to meet this requirement that enables one-step adhesion of PTA on wet and dry, porous, and nonporous surfaces low as 5 s. This design gives an interfacial toughness of ≈3000 J m −2 and comparable mechanical and fatigue-resistant properties. The adhesive precursor can be used as an adhesive paint for bonding materials even underwater and maintains strong adhesion under several thousand cycles of large deformation or in a wide temperature range. Moreover, the PTA precursor is chemically stable and controllable, thus benefiting the printing of heterogeneous, 4D shape-memory composites and a wearable electroluminescent sensor. It is anticipated that this rapid one-step design of PTA opens new horizons to tough adhesion of diverse surfaces.

Excellent mechanical and self-healing features could make hydrogels an ideal candidate for the application of load-bearing soft tissue replacements such as cartilage. In this study, a dual ionically cross-linked 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc)-Fe 3+ hydrogel was constructed using a one-pot method (in situ polymerization of AAc in the presence of HACC and Fe 3+ ). Both macromolecular positively charged HACC and Fe 3+ metal ions acted as cross-linkers to form ionic bonds with negatively charged PAAc. The HACC/PAAc-Fe 3+ hydrogels demonstrated ultra-high mechanical strengths (tensile strength of ca. 9.86 MPa and compressive stresses greater than 95 MPa at 99% strain), excellent self-recoverability (ca. over 90% toughness recovery within 5 h without any external stimuli), outstanding self-healing properties (ca. 74% self-healing efficiency at 70 °C for 48 h), transparency, and high stabilities in aqueous environments. The mechanical properties of the hydrogels could be adjusted by varying the concentration of HACC and Fe 3+ . This work provides a new approach for the construction of novel tough and transparent hydrogels with a fully ionically cross-linked network.

Natural polymer-based hydrogels have been wildly used in electronic skin, health monitoring and human motion sensing. However, the construction of hydrogel with excellent mechanical strength and electrical conductivity totally using natural polymers still faces many challenges. In this paper, gelatin and oxidized sodium carboxymethylcellulose were used to synthesize a double-network hydrogel through the dynamic Schiff base bonds. Then, the mechanical strength of the hydrogel was further enhanced by immersing in ammonium sulfate solution based on Hofmeister effect between gelatin and salt. Finally, the gelatin/oxidized sodium carboxymethylcellulose hydrogel exhibited high tensile properties (614 %), tensile fracture strength (2.6 MPa), excellent compressive fracture strength (64 MPa) and compressive toughness (4.28 MJ/m 3 ). Also, the electrical conductivity reached 3.94 S/m. The hydrogel after salt soaked was fabricated as strain sensors, which could accurately monitor the movement of many joints in the human body, such as fingers, wrists, elbows, neck and throat. Therefore, the designed hydrogel fully originated from natural polymers has great application potentials in motion detection and information recording.
