Multidentate Polymer-Stabilized Buried Interface for Efficient Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Hao Zhu,Chao Wang,Yanping Mo,Dehong Chen,Bofei Xue,Fuzhi Huang

Buried interface engineering is crucial to improve the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Although coordination materials have been widely used for buried interface modification, they are generally engineered on one surface of the interface through monodentate or bidentate molecules. Here, we propose that a multidentate polymer, sodium alginate (SA), acts with both surfaces via numerous C═O groups to reinforce buried interfaces. SA effectively reduces buried interface defects, adjusts the energy level alignment, and refines carrier dynamics. Notably, it also induces the growth of a perovskite film that is less tensile stressed and free of voids. Consequently, the champion device efficiency after SA treatment increased from 23.05% to 24.98%, along with significant improvements in both light and thermal stability. This work offers insights into efficiency and stability improvement from the perspective of multidentate polymer anchoring.

Synergistic effects of caesium closo-dodecaborate on buried interface for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

Wenjing Hou,Meiling Yang,Yao Guo,Yuting Ma,Mengna Guo,Yaoming Xiao,Gaoyi Han

The defects and strain of the buried SnO 2 /perovskite interface seriously affects the performances of n -i-p type perovskite solar cells. Herein, caesium closo-dodecaborate (B 12 H 12 Cs 2 ) is introduced into buried interface to improve the device performances. B 12 H 12 Cs 2 can passivate the bilateral defects of the buried interface, including the oxygen vacancy and uncoordinated Sn 2+ defects on SnO 2 side and the uncoordinated Pb 2+ defects on perovskite side. Three-dimensional aromatic B 12 H 12 Cs 2 can promote the interface charge transfer and extraction. [B 12 H 12 ] 2− can enhance the interface connection of buried interface by forming B-H---H-N dihydrogen bond and coordination bonds with metal ions . Meanwhile, the crystal properties of perovskite films can be improved and the buried tensile strain can be released by B 12 H 12 Cs 2 due to the matched lattice between B 12 H 12 Cs 2 and perovskite. In addition, Cs + can diffuse into perovskite to reduce the hysteresis behavior by inhibiting the I − migration. Arising from the enhanced connection performances, passivated defects, improved perovskite crystallization, enhanced charge extraction, inhibited ions migration, released tensile strain at buried interface by B 12 H 12 Cs 2 , the corresponding devices yield a champion power conversion efficiency of 22.10% with enhanced stability. The stability of devices by B 12 H 12 Cs 2 modification have been improved, and it can still maintain 72.5% of the original efficiency after 1440 h, while the control devices can only maintain 20% of the original efficiency after aging in air condition of 20–30% RH.

Healing the Buried Interface by a Plant-Derived Green Passivator for Carbon-Based CsPbIBr2 Perovskite Solar Cells

Ziting Qi,Jiabao Li,Xinyu Zhang,Jie Dou,Qiyao Guo,Yuanyuan Zhao,Peizhi Yang,Qunwei Tang,Jialong Duan

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted extensive attention in photovoltaic applications owing to their superior efficiency, and the buried interface plays a significant role in determining the efficiency and stability of PSCs. Herein, a plant-derived small molecule, ergothioneine (ET), is adopted to heal the defective buried interface of CsPbIBr2-based PSC to improve power conversion efficiency (PCE). Because of the strong interaction between Lewis base groups (–C═O and –C═S) in ET and uncoordinated Pb2+ in the perovskite film from the theoretical simulations and experimental results, the defect density of the CsPbIBr2 perovskite film is significantly reduced, and therefore, the nonradiative recombination in the corresponding device is simultaneously suppressed. Consequently, the target device achieves a high PCE of 11.13% with an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.325 V for hole-free, carbon-based CsPbIBr2 PSCs and 14.56% with a VOC of 1.308 V for CsPbI2Br PSCs. Furthermore, because of the increased ion migration energy, the detrimental phase segregation in this mixed-halide perovskite is weakened, delivering excellent long-term stability for the unencapsulated device in ambient conditions over 70 days with a 96% retention rate of initial efficiency.

Bioinspired molecules design for bilateral synergistic passivation in buried interfaces of planar perovskite solar cells

Wang Bin,Ma Junjie,Li Zehua,Chen Gangshu,Gu Qiang,Chen Shuyao,Zhang Yiqiang,Song Yanlin,Chen Jingbo,Pi Xiaodong,Yu Xuegong,Yang Deren

Trap-mediated energy loss in the buried interface with non-exposed feature constitutes one of the serious challenges for achieving high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Inspired by the adhesion mechanism of mussels, herein, three catechol derivatives with functional Lewis base groups, namely 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine (DA) and 3-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (DPPA), were strategically designed. These molecules as interfacial linkers are incorporated into the buried interface between perovskite and SnO 2 surface, achieving bilateral synergetic passivation effect. The crosslinking can produce secondary bonding with the undercoordinated Pb 2+ and Sn 4+ exhibited the best performance and operational stability. Upon the DOPA passivation, a stabilized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.5% was demonstrated for the planar PSCs. After 55 days of room-temperature storage, the unencapsulated devices with the DOPA crosslinker could still maintain 85% of their initial performance in air under relative humidity of ≈15%. This work opens up a new strategy for passivating the buried interfaces of perovskite photovoltaics and also provides important insights into designing defect passivation agents for other perovskite optoelectronic devices, such as light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and lasers.

Maltose as an Ecofriendly Modifier of the Buried Interface for Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Boping Yang,Yili Pan,Yu Ding,Dan Ouyang,Hong Zhang

A new concept of modifying the buried interface with ecofriendly material to improve the photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is proposed. A low-cost and ecofriendly maltose with multihydroxyl groups is facilely chosen for the proof of our concept. The maltose modification not only improves the hole mobility of hole transporting layer, but also regulates the formation of a high-quality perovskite film with a low density of gain boundary and trap states. The resulting inverted PSCs show a champion power conversion efficiency of 20.65% with negligible hysteresis, accompanied by enhanced thermal and operational stability. This work shows that buried interface engineering with ecofriendly materials opens a new avenue to further improve the efficiency and stability of sustainable PSCs.

Photoisomerizing Molecular Modification on the Buried Interface of Perovskite Solar Cells

Ziqiu Ren,Hanwen Zhang,Xinqi Lu,Xiyue Wang,Xinyu Yuan,Yanlin Song,Na Wang

The operational stability issues of perovskite devices under illumination pose significant challenges for practical applications, attributed to substantial alterations in lattice distortion, defect enrichment, and stress distribution in the excited state. However, most existing modification strategies predominantly focus on defect elimination and chemical transformations at the ground state level, which may not yield the desired outcomes in the excited state. To address this challenge, this study introduces a dynamic management strategy utilizing 4-aminoazobenzene hydrochloride, which exhibits photoinduced cis-trans isomerism, for the buried interface within perovskite devices. Experimental results demonstrate that the isomerized molecules anchored at the buried interface effectively inhibit the formation of photoinduced defects and mitigate interfacial stress accumulation. A comprehensive mechanism of the dynamic management through cis-trans isomerism transformation has been proposed to elucidate the buried interface modification process. Consequently, the device efficiency and operational stability have been markedly enhanced, achieving a peak efficiency of 25.65% and retaining over 92% of its initial efficiency after 1200 h continuous illumination under International Summit on Organic Photovoltaic Stability protocol (ISOS ).

Buried Interface Passivation of Regular Perovskite Solar Cells Using Trimethoxysilane-Based Small Molecule Materials

Xinxin Xu,Qiang Lou,Jiahao Wu,Haocheng Huang,Hao Zhang,Bosen Zhang,Maojun Sun,Lin Zhao,Jingyi Xu,Hang Zhou

Numerous issues influencing the device performance at the buried interface of perovskite solar cells exist. Modifying the interface constitutes a key to enhancing the efficiency and stability of solar cells. In this work, we propose a small molecule material, (3-bromopropyl)trimethoxysilane (BTS), as an efficient modifier for the buried interface of regular perovskite solar cells. It can interact with the −OH groups on SnO2 and the uncoordinated Pb and the formamidinium (FA) vacancies in the perovskite, thereby passivating the defects in the SnO2 and perovskite layers, improving the extraction and transportation of charge carriers at the interface, inhibiting the nonradiative recombination of charge carriers, and thereby increasing the carrier lifetime. The introduction of BTS significantly improves the performance of the solar cells, with the open-circuit voltage (Voc) reaching 1.169 V and an increase in power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 19.39% to 23.60%. Additionally, the devices with interface modification exhibit outstanding stability, retaining 85.7% of the initial PCE value after being aged for 160 days under a relative humidity of 35% at room temperature.

Cross-layer all-interface defect passivation with pre-buried additive toward efficient all-inorganic perovskite solar cells

Qiurui Wang,Jingwei Zhu,Yuanyuan Zhao,Yijie Chang,Nini Hao,Zhe Xin,Qiang Zhang,Cong Chen,Hao Huang,Qunwei Tang

The buried interface in the perovskite solar cell (PSC) has been regarded as a breakthrough to boost the power conversion efficiency and stability. However, a comprehensive manipulation of the buried interface in terms of the transport layer, buried interlayer, and perovskite layer has been largely overlooked. Herein, we propose the use of a volatile heterocyclic compound called 2-thiopheneacetic acid (TPA) as a pre-buried additive in the buried interface to achieve cross-layer all-interface defect passivation through an in situ bottom-up infiltration diffusion strategy. TPA not only suppresses the serious interfacial nonradiative recombination losses by precisely healing the interfacial and underlying defects but also effectively enhances the quality of perovskite film and releases the residual strain of perovskite film. Owing to this versatility, TPA-tailored CsPbBr 3 PSCs deliver a record efficiency of 11.23% with enhanced long-term stability. This breakthrough in manipulating the buried interface using TPA opens new avenues for further improving the performance and reliability of PSC.

Optimizing ETL/CsPbBr3 buried interface contact for enhanced efficiency and stability of inorganic perovskite solar cells

Zhang Si-Yu,Guo Xing,Xu Yu-Meng,Jiao Yong,Lin Zhen-Hua,Zhang Jin-Cheng,Ouyang Jian-Yong,Guo Li-Xin,Hao Yue,Chang Jing-Jing

CsPbBr 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted significant interest for their remarkable stability under high temperatures and humidity. However, challenges such as energy loss at the CsPbBr 3 /oxide buried interface and imperfect band alignment have impeded further efficiency enhancements. In this study, TiO 2 , SnO 2 , or ZnO was employed as electron transport layer (ETL) materials, respectively, in CsPbBr 3 -based PSCs to optimize the band alignment at the ETL/CsPbBr 3 interface and enhance the film quality of CsPbBr 3 materials. The research findings indicate that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs is influenced by the choice of ETL material. Specifically, TiO 2 -based PSCs achieved a PCE of 10.37% efficiency, higher than SnO 2 - or ZnO-based PSCs. This disparity in PCE can be attributed to variations in open-circuit voltage, which stem from different band alignments at the ETL/CsPbBr 3 interface. Notably, superior photovoltaic performance was consistently observed in TiO 2 -based PSCs due to the substantial conduction band offset (∆ E c ) at the TiO 2 /CsPbBr 3 interface and the high quality of the CsPbBr 3 film. This not only enhances electron extraction at the TiO 2 /CsPbBr 3 interface but also diminishes non-radiative recombination at the interface, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments. Furthermore, photodetectors (PDs) based on TiO 2 /CsPbBr 3 heterojunction exhibit high photoresponse and photodetectivity. In conclusion, this study underscores the critical importance of the buried interface contact in CsPbBr 3 and offers a direct approach for fabricating efficient and stable inorganic PSCs and PDs. Liquid buried interface to slide lattice and heal defects in inorganic perovskite solar cells

Wei He,Xiya Yang,Jialong Duan,Junshuai Zhang,Qiyao Guo,Hao Huang,Qunwei Tang

The residual tensile strain, which is induced by lattice and thermal expansion coefficient difference between upper perovskite film and underlying charge transporting layer, significantly deteriorates the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of a halide perovskite solar cell (PSC). To overcome this technical bottleneck, herein, we propose a universal liquid buried interface (LBI) by introducing a low melting-point small molecule to replace traditional solid–solid interface. Arising from the movability upon solid-to-liquid phase conversion, LBI plays a role of “lubricant” to effectively free the soft perovskite lattice shrinkage or expansion rather than anchoring onto the substrate, leading to the reduced defects due to the healing of strained lattice. Finally, the inorganic CsPbIBr 2 PSC and CsPbI 2 Br cell achieve the best PCEs of 11.13 % and 14.05 %, respectively, and the photo-stability is improved by 33.3-fold because of the suppressed halide segregation. This work provides new insights on the LBI for making high-efficiency and stable PSC platforms.

Facile NH₄Br pre-deposition enables effective buried interface passivation yielding 25.46 % efficiency in perovskite solar cells

Longxian Zhang,Zhineng Zhou,Lang Wu,Qiaogang Song,Yu Zhuang,Chi Yang,Xintong Zhao,Juchuan Chai,Shurong Wang

The two-step method facilitates perovskite crystallization by pre-generating PbI 2 crystal nuclei and exhibits superior repeatability. Nevertheless, the two-step fabrication process results in a perovskite layer with many grain boundaries and interfacial defects, which act as non-radiative recombination sites, significantly limiting the V OC . At the same time, the quality of the resulting film strongly relies on how effectively organic salts diffuse within the PbI₂ layer. Herein, through a pre-deposition strategy, A pre-deposited NH 4 Br layer at the SnO 2 /perovskite interface effectively modulated the growth behavior of perovskite crystals. This led to the formation of a vertically grown perovskite film, featuring an average grain size of 1.37 μm. The pre-deposited NH 4 Br not only effectively suppressed interface recombination by reducing defect densities and enhanced carrier extraction, but also effectively improved perovskite film crystallinity and reduced PbI 2 content. Furthermore, the pre-deposition strategy extended the average carrier lifetime to 2.3 μs. Finally, perovskite devices based on pre-deposited NH 4 Br layer achieved a power conversion efficiency of 25.46 % and exhibited negligible hysteresis and good stability. In a word, the early incorporation of NH 4 Br at the SnO 2 /perovskite interface provides an effective approach to improving interfacial contact and reducing recombination, thereby enhancing device efficiency and long-term operational stability.

Regulating the Interplay at the Buried Interface for Efficient and Stable Carbon-Based CsPbI2Br Perovskite Solar Cells

Dan Zhang,Xiang Zhang,Tonghui Guo,Junjun Jin,Junjie Zou,Zhenkun Zhu,Yuan Zhou,Qiang Cao,Jing Zhang,Zhiwei Ren,Qidong Tai

Buried interface modification is promising for preparing high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by improving the film quality and adjusting the interfacial energy level alignment. In this work, multifunctional ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid diammonium (EAD)-modulated ZnO is employed as an effective buried interface to regulate the interplay between SnO2 and CsPbI2Br in carbon-based inorganic PSCs (C-IPSCs). The burying of EAD into the ZnO interlayer not only enhances the photoelectric properties of ZnO by passivating oxygen defects but also adjusts the energy level alignment of the buried interface. More importantly, the perovskite quality is optimized and the buried interface defects are passivated due to the formation of coordination and hydrogen bondings. Benefiting from such a robust and efficient charge transfer configuration, a maximum power conversion efficiency of 14.58% is achieved in the optimized device, which represents the highest performance reported among those of low-temperature CsPbI2Br C-IPSCs. In addition, the unencapsulated device demonstrates better long-term and thermal stability.
