A High Performance Direct Carbon Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Stack for Portable Applications

WANG Xiao-Qiang,LIU Jiang,XIE Yong-Min,CAI Wei-Zi,ZHANG Ya-Peng,ZHOU Qian,YU Fang-Yong,LIU Mei-Lin

A direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell (DC-SOFC) stack was prepared with 3 tubular cells electrically connected in series. To increase carbon storage in the stack, the anode was fabricated outside the tubular cells so that carbon fuel can be loaded at the exterior of the stack, which is more spacious than the interior. The 3-cell-stack is operated directly with carbon as the fuel and oxygen in ambient air as the oxidant. With a total effective area of 10.2 cm2 and a 5% (w) Fe-loaded activated carbon fuel of 17 g, the stack reveals a peak power of 4.1 W at 800°C. The stack discharged at a constant current of 1.0 A for 19 h, giving a charge capacity of 19 A·h and an energy capacity of 31.6 W·h, which are much higher than those of a similar stack with anode on the inside and carbon loaded at the interior. The high capacity of our DC-SOFC opens up potential applications in portable devices.

Compact dual-cathode stack enables industrially viable H2O2 electrosynthesis with high throughput and operability

Chen Shu,Bin Chen,Weihu Zhang,Lele Cui,Wenheng Jing

Renewable electricity-driven hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) electrosynthesis technology has recently emerged as a multidisciplinary research frontier as its distributed deployment capability can provide enhanced versatility for various potential niche applications. Despite significant progress in screening advanced electrocatalysts and fundamental understanding of microscopic reaction mechanisms, industrially viable electrolysis devices suitable for this technology are still lacking due to technical challenges such as low space/electrode utilisation and single-pass yield as well as poor operability. Here, we demonstrate a membrane-free dual-cathode stack reactor featuring compactness (inter-electrode distance configured to flow field plate thickness) and ideal electrode utilisation (two cathodes paired with one anode). Structurally discontinuous carbon films with self-sustained aeration are assembled as cathodes, which enables open air-fed O 2 -to-H 2 O 2 conversion and thus effectively simplifies operation. Even with low electrolyte concentrations (0.05 M Na 2 SO 4 ), this design demonstrates efficient H 2 O 2 production from bench- to industrial-scale operating current densities (75–200 mA cm −2 ) at relatively low cell voltages (5.9–11.0 V). Impressive single-pass H 2 O 2 accumulations of 959.6–2332.1 mg L −1 with current efficiencies of 55.1 %–90.7 % can be achieved at low hydraulic retention times of 15–60 s. The practicality and reliability of the device can be further elucidated by its robustness in decentralized wastewater remediation scenarios. This all-material/components-commercial design paves the way for advancing the technology readiness level of H 2 O 2 electrosynthesis processes.

A direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell stack on a single electrolyte plate fabricated by tape casting technique

Wei Wang,Zhijun Liu,Yapeng Zhang,Peipei Liu,Qianyuan Qiu,Mingyang Zhou,Meilin Liu,Jiang Liu

A four-cell-in-series stack of solid oxide fuel cell is fabricated on a single yttrium-stabilized-zirconia electrolyte plate which is fabricated by tape casting technique. The slurry for the tape casting process is characterized and optimized through Zeta potential and viscosity measurements. The optimal slurry is used to prepare the electrolyte plate, with electrical connecting holes, for the stack. The stack is operated directly with 5 wt% Fe-loaded activated carbon as the fuel. With a total effective area of 8.8 cm 2 and carbon fuel of 5 g, this direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell stack shows an open circuit voltage of 3.82 V and an output power of 2.2 W at 820 °C. It gives a discharging platform of over 3.0 V for 10.5 h with a constant discharging current of 200 mA, at 800 °C. Then voltage drops to zero after discharging for 14 h, releasing a discharging energy of 8.6 W h. This work shows a possibility of developing direct carbon solid oxide fuel cells for applications of portable or distributed power sources.

Joining 3YSZ Electrolyte to AISI 441 Interconnect Using the Ag Particle Interlayer: Enhanced Mechanical and Aging Properties

Xiaoqing Si,Xiaoyang Wang,Chun Li,Tong Lin,Junlei Qi,Jian Cao

Reactive air brazing has been widely used in fabricating solid oxide fuel/electrolysis cell (SOFC/SOEC) stacks. However, the conventional Ag–CuO braze can lead to (I) over oxidation at the steel interconnect interface caused by its adverse reactions with the CuO and (II) many voids caused by the hydrogen-induced decomposition of CuO. The present work demonstrates that the Ag particle interlayer can be used to join yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes to AISI 441 interconnect in air instead of Ag–CuO braze. Reliable joining between YSZ and AISI 441 can be realized at 920 °C. A dense and thin oxide layer (~2 μm) is formed at the AISI 441 interface. Additionally, an interatomic joining at the YSZ/Ag interface was observed by TEM. Obtained joints displayed a shear strength of ~86.1 MPa, 161% higher than that of the joints brazed by Ag–CuO braze (~33 MPa). After aging in reducing and oxidizing atmospheres (800 °C/300 h), joints remained tight and dense, indicating a better aging performance. This technique eliminates the CuO-induced issues, which may extend lifetimes for SOFC/SOEC stacks and other ceramic/metal joining applications. Keywords:solid oxide fuel/electrolysis cells;sintering;YSZ;Ag particle interlayer;aging

A compact and seal-less direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell stack stepping into practical application

Qianyang Chen,Qianyuan Qiu,Xiaomin Yan,Mingyang Zhou,Yapeng Zhang,Zhijun Liu,Weizi Cai,Wei Wang,Jiang Liu

The direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell is a potential technology that efficiently and cleanly converts the chemical energy of solid carbon into electricity. Its superiority of all-solid-state configuration and unique operating mechanism indicate that it has a good application prospect in high energy density portable or backup power supplys. It can also be used to convert coal into electrical power. Here, for the first time, we report a compact direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell stack with 12 cells fabricated on a single 10 × 10 cm electrolyte plate. The plate covers a container filled with solid carbon-rich fuel to form a stack. No sealant and pipelines are needed and the carbon-rich fuel can be reloaded. Both activated carbon and sawdust of bauhinia tree branch are used as the fuel. The output power of such a stack approaches more than 10 W at 800 °C. Using 15 g of 5 wt% Fe-loaded activated carbon as the fuel, a stack discharging at a constant current of 1.5 A outputs an energy of 29 Wh, correspongding to an energy desnity of carbon of ∼2000 Wh kg −1 . This work shows the feasibility of developing direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell into a compact electricity generator using readily available carbon-rich fuels. It also shows promise of using this technology in clean and efficient conversion of coal to electricity.

Digital Microfluidics with Integrated Raman Sensor for High-Sensitivity In-Situ Bioanalysis

Wenbo Dong,Rongxin Fu,Nan Zhang,Jing Zhao,Yudan Ma,Han Cui,Jiangjiang Zhang,Zipeng Zhao,Hang Li,Yunxia Zhao,Yao Lu,Zhizhong Chen,Tianming Xu,Huikai Xie,Qian Yu,Shuailong Zhang

This study introduces an advanced bioanalytical platform that combines digital microfluidics (DMF) with Raman spectroscopy, effectively addressing common issues in bioanalysis such as sample contamination, excessive consumption of samples and reagents, and manual handling. Our innovative system is engineered to handle diverse sample types and enables both sample preparation and in-situ analysis on a single device, utilizing less than 5μL of samples and reagents. It incorporates a Translucent Raman Enhancement Stack (TRES) sensor, which boosts the detection signal, and includes droplet-driving functionality for automated processing of complex samples in a compact setting. The hydrophilic surface of the TRES sensor draws analytes into the detection zone, expediting sample attachment and enhancing the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Moreover, the TRES sensors are cost-effective, straightforward to manufacture, and scalable, making them suitable for widespread production and single-use bioanalytical applications. This integrated and automated approach streamlines the sample preparation and analysis processes, enhances detection efficiency, and achieves high sensitivity, excellent linearity, and effective detection of different biochemical analytes. We validate the system's accuracy through on-device enrichment and analysis of exosomes from serum, demonstrating its capability for real-time, on-site analysis of complex biological samples.
