Urban Organic Waste for Urban Farming: Growing Lettuce Using Vermicompost and Thermophilic Compost

Corinna Schröder,Franziska Häfner,Oliver Christopher Larsen,Ariane Krause

A transformation towards sustainable food production requires improved circular nutrient management. Urban organic waste contains relevant nutrients and organic matter, yet only 4% of global urban nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) sources are presently recycled. One recycling approach is the composting of urban wastes for urban horticulture. We characterized compost from various urban waste fractions and assessed their fertilizer value in a pot trial with lettuce plants. Seven treatments were investigated: food waste vermicompost with coir and paperboard bedding material, thermophilic compost from green waste and human feces, two references with mineral fertilization and a sand control. The lettuce yield and total uptake of P, potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) were highest in plants grown in coir-based vermicompost. The fecal compost led to the highest shoot P and K content, but the shoot uptake of Ca and Mg were lower than in the other treatments. All composts required additional N for lettuce growth. In conclusion, urban waste-derived vermicompost and fecal compost demonstrate a high delivery rate of plant-available Ca, Mg, P, and K. Research is needed on macronutrient availability and alternative N sources for the substitution of synthetic fertilization. These findings support the production of urban waste composts, furthering efforts in nutrient recycling. Keywords:coconut fiber;fecal compost;lettuce;nutrient recovery;organic waste;sustainable food production;thermophilic compost;phosphorus

Application of Additives in Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco Tending Shreds Compost in Forest

Xuan Li,Huijuan Bo,Jialei Zhu,Jiwei Zhang,Jun Hu,Fuyong Mu,Lishui Nie

This study aimed to explore the effects of different additives on tending shreds ofPlatycladus orientalis(L.) Franco. Two different additives (priming 0.2% and common compost 0.2%) combined with C, N, and P adjustment of raw material treatments were tested on the temperature, moisture, EC, pH, lignocellulose degradation rate, nutrient content, and toxicity of compost. Priming made the compost temperature rise rapidly, and the peak temperature of the composting group with priming reached 51 °C. At the end of composting, the moisture in each treatment from high to low was in the order: common compost > priming > C/N, C/P adjustment only > control group. The increase of EC in the treatments with additives was great, and the peak value of EC in the treatment of priming was 1.30 ms·cm−1, which was 3.9 times higher than that of the control group. At the end of composting, the decomposition rate of cellulose in priming compost was 1.7 times higher than that in the control group, and the hemicellulose decomposition rate in the common compost group was 3.2 times higher than that in the control group. By the end of composting, the pH value of the composts in additive treatments was above 7.0, and the pH value of the priming treatment was the highest (7.5). The highest content of organic matter was found in the priming treatment, which was 52%, 1.7 times higher than that in the control group. The total nutrient content (TN + K2O + P2O5) of additive treatments was higher than 5.0%, and the priming treatment was 2.7% higher than that of the control group. By the end of composting, the germination rate and germination index ranged from 88% to 91% and 60% to 81%. Except for the control group, the C/N ratio of other treatments decreased to below 25. Additives can accelerate the decomposition of raw materials, shorten the composting cycle, and improve the quality of composts, and the effect of adding priming is the most significant. Keywords:Platycladus orientalis(L.) Composting of 4-nonylphenol-contaminated river sediment with inocula of Phanerochaete chrysosporium

Danlian Huang,Xingmeng Qin,Piao Xu,Guangming Zeng,Zhiwei Peng,Rongzhong Wang,Jia Wan,Xiaomin Gong,Wenjing Xue

A composting study was performed to investigate the degradation of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) in river sediment by inoculating Phanerochaete chrysosporium ( Pc ). Pc was inoculated into composting Reactor A, C and D, while Reactor B without inocula was used as control. The results showed that composting with Pc accelerated the degradation of 4-NP, increased the catalase and polyphenol oxidase enzyme activities in contaminated sediment. The dissipation half-life (t 1/2 ) of 4-NP in Reactor A, C and D with inocula of Pc were 2.079, 2.558, 2.424   days, while in Reactor B without inocula of Pc it was 3.239   days, respectively. Correlation analysis showed that the contents of 4-NP in sediment in Reactor A and D were negatively correlated with the actives of laccase, whereas no obvious correlation was observed in Reactor B and C. All these findings also indicated that Pc enhanced the maturity of compost, and the best composting C/N ratio was 25.46:1.

Effects of Iron Nanoparticles Addition on Bacterial Community and Phytotoxicity in Aerobic Compost of Pig Manure

Wenqing Yang,Qian Zhuo,Yuanping Zhong,Qinghua Chen,Zuliang Chen

In China, the treatment of pig manure for land application is an important issue. In this paper, green synthesized iron nanoparticles (G-nFe) were evaluated for their effectiveness in the aerobic composting of pig manure. G-nFe were evenly mixed into the compost, and the pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of the compost in the presence of G-nFe both decreased. FTIR showed that G-nFe promoted the formation of humus during composting. The addition of G-nFe (200 mL kg−1) to the compost also promoted bacterial growth, significantly increasing the colony-forming units (CFU, up to 25.6 × 104CFU mL−1) and OD600 (up to 0.634) in 5 days. Furthermore, G-nFe promoted the fermentation of the pig manure, thus reducing the phytotoxicity of the compost produced. For example, the final volatile solids (VS) degradation rate and seed germination index (GI) of the compost were the highest and reached 20.8% and 0.76%, respectively. Finally, G-nFe improved both the bacterial diversity and community richness of the compost. This indicated that the addition of G-nFe could result in the prolonging of the acidic fermentation time during composting, leading to increased compost maturity. Overall, the beneficial impact of G-nFe on compost was far greater than the potential harm to bacterial communities in the compost and perceived phytotoxicity. Keywords:bacteriological;compost;iron nanoparticles;green synthesis;phytotoxicity

Dynamics of copper and tetracyclines during composting of water hyacinth biomass amended with peat or pig manure

Lu Xin,Liu Lizhu,Fan Ruqin,Luo Jia,Yan Shaohua,Rengel Zed,Zhang Zhenhua

Composting is one of the post-treatment methods for phytoremediation plants. Due to a high potential of water hyacinth to accumulate pollutants, the physicochemical parameters, microbial activity as well as fates of copper (Cu) and tetracyclines (TCs) were investigated for the different amended water hyacinth biomass harvested from intensive livestock and poultry wastewater, including unamended water hyacinth (W), water hyacinth amended with peat (WP), and water hyacinth amended with pig manure (WPM) during the composting process. Pig manure application accelerated the composting process as evidenced by an increase of temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), NH 4 -N, as well as functional diversity of microbial communities compared to W and WP treatments. Composting process was slowed down by high Cu, but not by TCs. The addition of peat significantly increased the residual fraction of Cu, while pig manure addition increased available Cu concentration in the final compost. Cu could be effectively transformed into low available (oxidizable) and residual fractions after fermentation. In contrast, less than 0.5% of initial concentrations of TCs were determined at the end of 60-day composting for all treatments in the final composts. The dissipation of TCs was accelerated by the high Cu concentration during composting. Therefore, composting is an effective method for the post-treatment and resource utilization of phytoremediation plants containing Cu and/or TCs.

Biochar combined with compost to reduce the mobility, bioavailability and plant uptake of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether in soil

Leilei Xiang,Hongjie Sheng,Chenggang Gu,Redmile-Gordon Marc,Yu Wang,Yonrong Bian,Xin Jiang,Fang Wang

Biochar application to soil is recognised for its capacity to immobilise pollutants (through sorption) while composted inputs can accelerate the biodegradation of organic pollutants. However, little is known about the influence of combined incorporation on plant uptake of organic pollutants. Therefore, we investigated the effects of maize straw-derived biochar (MSB), compost derived from maize straw and pig manure (SMC), and their combination (MSB-SMC) as soil amendments on bioavailability of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) and carrot ( Daucus carota L. ) uptake in a horticultural soil. We found that biochar alone performed well in reducing BDE-47 bioavailability, but was less effective at degrading the pollutant. Conversely, addition of compost stimulated BDE-47 biodegradation. MSB-SMC enhanced BDE-47 biodegradation in soil, reduced contamination of carrot roots, and caused significant reductions in soil extractable BDE-47. The combination of contrasting approaches to remediation thus resulted in the most favorable outcome for a contaminated soil: immobilisation of contaminant from vegetable crops (via biochar) with simultaneous bioremediation of the growing medium. These findings point towards an effective strategy for reducing plant uptake of PDBEs through the combined use of biochar and compost as soil amendment – reducing mobility and facilitating degradation of the accessible contaminant fractions.

Imidacloprid dissipation, metabolism and accumulation in Agaricus bisporus fruits, casing soil and compost and dietary risk assessment

Qicai Zhang,Xianli Wang,Qinxiong Rao,Shanshan Chen,Weiguo Song

An improved understanding of imidacloprid (IMI) metabolism and accumulation in casing soil or compost-mushroom systems will help to optimise the safe use of IMI for agricultural pest control in Agaricus bisporus cultivation. In this study, the dissipation, metabolites and accumulation of IMI in casing soil or compost- A. bisporus systems were investigated. The results show that the IMI dissipation half-lives at doses of 10 and 50 mg kg −1 were 65 d and 59 d in casing soil and 6.6 d and 6.2 d in compost, respectively during the cultivation period. Three IMI metabolites were observed in casing soil during cultivation of mushrooms. Urea-imidacloprid (IMI-urea) was a major metabolite, accounting for more than 59%. In compost, the main metabolite in the first 5 days was IMI-urea, from 5 to 10 days olefin-imidacloprid (IMI-ole) and 6-chloronicotinic acid (6-CNA) were both the most prominent compounds, and after 10 days 6-CNA alone. At 50 mg kg −1 dose, IMI and the metabolites (IMI-urea, IMI-ole) were detected in the fruiting body with IMI applied to casing soil and only the metabolite 6-CNA was detected in fruiting body with IMI applied to compost. The bio concentration factors (BCFs) of IMI-ole and IMI-urea were higher than of IMI and 6-CNA, and the BCFs had no obvious relationship with log K ow . Furthermore, the potential dietary risk of IMI in A. bisporus was acceptable when application rates in casing soil or compost was up to 50 mg kg −1 . Our study supports a safe use of IMI as agricultural pest control in A. bisporus cultivation.

The inhibition of cystathionine gamma-lyase and cystathionine beta-synthase - a strategy to reduce hydrogen sulfide emissions during livestock manure composting

Ze Deng,Jiajia Cheng,Yaqi Zhang,Yue Zhao,Zimin Wei,Caihong Song

The composting of livestock manure produces a significant amount of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), which can cause environmental pollution. This has become a substantial impediment to the advancement of the composting industry. In this study, Cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) and Cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) enzymes were explored from the perspective of endogenous H 2 S production. This study investigated aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA) and DL-propargylglycine (PAG) as enzyme inhibitors in composting to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of H 2 S emission reduction from chicken and swine manure. The results showed that the treatment groups reduced the cumulative H 2 S emissions by a minimum of 33.52% and a maximum of 72.11%. The CSE and CBS-mediated H 2 S production reaction was inhibited by AOAA and PAG, which resulted in a significant reduction ( P  < 0.05) in H 2 S emission during composting and a considerable decrease in the loss of sulfur components in gaseous form. Furthermore, the addition of AOAA and PAG affected the genes related to organic sulfur metabolism and the sulfur metabolism cycle network. This study is the first to investigate the addition of two enzyme inhibitors in composting, examining the mechanisms at different levels. These results provide new insights into the compost management strategies for the reduction of H 2 S emissions. This is a crucial area of research for the reduction of environmental pollution and the advancement of the composting industry.

Aerobic co-composting of mature compost with cattle manure: Organic matter conversion and microbial community characterization

Zichun Zhang,Huaikai Yang,Bin Wang,Chao Chen,Xiaoshuang Zou,Tuo Cheng,Jiang Li

The production of organic fertilizer by aerobic composting of cattle manure is an important way of its resource utilization. This study evaluated the effects of adding mature compost on the decomposition and microbial communities in the aerobic composting of cattle manure. The addition of mature compost shortens the composting cycle and results in a final lignocellulosic degradation rate of 35%. Metagenomic analysis showed that this was due to the proliferation of thermophilic and organic matter-degrading functional microorganisms, which enhanced the activity of carbohydrate-active enzymes. With the addition of mature compost, the microbial community exhibited stronger metabolic functions, especially carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, which are the driving forces of organic matter degradation. This study deepens the understanding of organic matter conversion and microbial community metabolic functions when mature compost is used for livestock manure composting and provides a promising technology for livestock manure composting.

Effects of nitrification inhibitors DCD and DMPP on maturity, N2O and NH3 emissions during manure composting

Xinyuan Ma,Haobo Bai,Guoxue Li,Lingling Li,Haofeng Meng,Yan Liu,Jing Yuan

In order to reduce N 2 O emissions during composting, the effects of different nitrification inhibitors (NI), dicyandiamide (DCD) and 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP), on compost maturity, N 2 O, and NH 3 emissions were studied under continuous incremental addition. This study used pig manure and corn straw as composting materials, based on the total nitrogen (TN) content of the initial mixture, two treatments were set: DCD (2.5% in the early phase and 5.0% in the maturation phase) and DMPP (0.25% in the early phase and 0.75% in the maturation phase) in a composting experiment. The results showed that adding DCD and DMPP did not affect the compost maturity, with the seed germination index (GI) of final compost reaching 80.76%–97.06%. Before the maturity period of compost, ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions accounted for 98.5%–99.4% of total emissions. Compared with the control group (CK), the addition of DCD and DMPP in the early stage reduced NH 3 emissions by 8.85% and 12.83%, respectively, by decreasing the ammonification rate. During the mature stage of composting, N 2 O emissions account for 95.6%–98.9% of the total emissions. The addition of DCD and DMPP delayed N 2 O emissions by 4 and 6 days, respectively, through nitrification inhibition. The DMPP amendment also reduced cumulative N 2 O emissions by 54.50% and increased the nitrogen content of the final compost. Correlation analysis showed that N 2 O was mainly originated from the denitrification of nitrification substrate (NO 2 − -N and NO 3 − -N). This study provides technical support for low-carbon management of agricultural waste.

Ferrous salts accelerate humification and reduced carbon emissions during the co-composting of hoggery slurry and wheat husks: New insights into their biotic and abiotic functions and mechanisms

Yang Wang,Guorong Yi,Wanqiang Zhang,Jiawei Hou,Kuok Ho Daniel Tang,Bowen Wang,Hua Li,Quan Wang,Hamada Abdelrahman,Tao Zhang,Sabry M. Shaheen,Ronghua Li

In this study, the effects and mechanisms of water-soluble ferrous salts (WSFS) on the humification and carbon conversion during the co-composting of hoggery slurry (HG) and wheat husks (WH) were investigated. A composting mixture of HG and WH was treated with FeCl 2 addition (T1) and FeSO 4 addition (T2), and compared with an untreated control (CK), as a function of time (28 days). The duration of the high-temperature phase (>50 °C) for CK, T1, and T2 are 17, 15, and 15 days, respectively. Compared to the CK, T1 and T2 treatments reduced CO 2 emissions by 11.4 % and 32.0 %, respectively. The calculated total global warming potential values were 293.67 (CK), 267.69 (T1) and 207.10 (T2) g CO 2 eq kg −1 . The humus concentrations increased in all treatments: CK by 28.10 %, T1 by 53.41 % and T2 by 49.73 % in composting. WSFS addition enhanced biotic humification by elevated the abundance and distribution of Bacillus , which promotes cellulose and hemicellulose decomposition, and Tepidimicrobium , which accelerates the production of humus, through use of sugars and proteins. Besides, WSFS addition decreased the levels of pathogenic bacteria in the final compost product. Notably, WSFS addition also benefited the abiotic humification by production of •OH during oxidation of Fe(II) in composting. This study enhances the understanding of the biotic and abiotic functions of FeSO 4 and FeCl 2 in promoting humification and reducing carbon emissions during composting. The detailed role of hydroxyl radical in composting and the effectiveness of WSFS-addition in composting nitrogen transformation are still need to be addressed in future.

Dissipation Dynamics of Doxycycline and Gatifloxacin and Accumulation of Heavy Metals during Broiler Manure Aerobic Composting

Lei Chu,Yongcui Wang,Bin Huang,Jian Ma,Xin Chen

In this study, broilers were fed with heavy-metal-containing diets (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, As, Hg) at three rates (T1: 5 kg premix/ton feed, T2: 10 kg premix/ton feed and T3: 15 kg premix/ton feed) and Doxycycline (DOX) and Gatifloxacin (GAT) at low or high doses (T4: 31.2 mg DOX/bird/day and 78 mg GAT/bird/day, T5: 15.6 mg DOX/bird/day and 48 mg GAT/bird/day) to assess the accumulation of various heavy metals and the fate of two antibiotics in broiler manure after 35 days of aerobic composting. The results indicated that the two antibiotics changed quite differently during aerobic composting. About 14.96–15.84% of Doxycycline still remained at the end of composting, while Gatifloxacin was almost completely removed within 10 days of composting. The half-lives of Doxycycline were 13.75 and 15.86 days, while the half-lives of Gatifloxacin were only 1.32 and 1.38 days. Based on the Redundancy analysis (RDA), the concentration of antibiotics was significantly influenced by physico-chemical properties (mainly temperature and pH) throughout the composting process. Throughout the composting process, all heavy metal elements remained concentrated in organic fertilizer. In this study the Cr content reached 160.16 mg/kg, 223.98 mg/kg and 248.02 mg/kg with increasing premix feed rates, similar to Zn, which reached 258.2 mg/kg, 312.21 mg/kg and 333.68 mg/kg. Zn and Cr concentrations well exceeded the United States and the European soil requirements. This experiment showed that antibiotic residues and the accumulation of heavy metals may lead to soil contamination and pose a risk to the soil ecosystem. Keywords:Doxycycline;Gatifloxacin;heavy metal;composting;degradation;accumulation
