Low partial pressure CO2 capture in packed tower by EHA+Diglyme water-lean absorbent

Kun Fu,Mingzhen Zheng,Dong Fu

The results of beaker experiments (Fu et al., 2021, 2022) showed that water-lean 2-ethylhexan-1-amine (EHA) + diglyme absorbent has more advantages than the commercial water-based ethanolamine (MEA) absorbent in terms of characteristics of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) absorption and desorption. Verifying CO 2 capture characteristics in a tower facility is essential to absorbents development. In this work, a pilot packed tower was set up and the Dg16 type polypropylene step ring was taken as packing to test the capture efficiency and mass transfer performance of EHA + diglyme water-lean absorbent for low partial pressure CO 2 , and then the effects of gas-liquid ratio, CO 2 partial pressure and packing height on the capture performance were clarified. The results showed that the absorption of CO 2 by EHA + diglyme water-lean absorbent was dominated by liquid-phase mass transfer in the packed tower. Compared with aqueous 30 wt%MEA, the water-lean EHA + diglyme achieved much higher CO 2 capture efficiency and overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient. This work demonstrated the transition from water-free absorption to water-lean absorption under the existence of water vapor in flue gas . It can provide basic data for the design of the CO 2 capture process based on water-lean absorption in packed towers.

Characterization and Correlations of CO2 Absorption Performance into Aqueous Amine Blended Solution of Monoethanolamine (MEA) and N,N-Dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) in a Packed Column

Hao Ling,Sen Liu,Tianyu Wang,Hongxia Gao,Zhiwu Liang

To get a more accurate mass transfer coefficient model of CO2 into aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA)/N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) solution in a packed column, the Henry’s law constant, equilibrium CO2 solubility, volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient (KGav), overall gas-phase mass transfer coefficient (KG), and effective gas–liquid interfacial area (av) were comprehensively studied. The Henry’s law constant was obtained using a jacketed stirred glass reactor, and the equilibrium CO2 solubility was investigated using a bubbling absorption reactor. Additionally, the mass transfer performance was measured and evaluated experimentally in a packed column with DX-Type structured packing in terms of KGav, KG, and av. These experiments were conducted under the MEA/DMEA concentration of 6 kmol·m–3 with ratio of 5:1. The dynamic changes of solubility, species concentration, and absorption heat of solution were analyzed under different CO2 loadings. The experimental results showed that the relationship of successive absorption without synergistic effect from the perspective of equilibrium state for the MEA/DMEA solution and the blended MEA/DMEA solution can reduce the CO2 absorption heat compared to that of MEA solution. Furthermore, a predicted model of KGav, which should be suitable for different solution systems with DX-Type structured packings in a packed column, was also proposed and developed based on the KG model and av model in this work.

Energy consumption analysis and parameter optimization of CO2 desorption in a structured packaged column

Kefei Li,Yue Wu,Yiming Bai,Hai Yan,Yiming Wang,Yuzhe Guan,Liang Li,Guicheng Liu

Reducing the energy consumption of CO 2 regeneration is crucial for enhancing the economic feasibility of CO 2 capture processes. While most studies have focused on developing novel absorbents, the influence of operating parameters on gas-liquid mass transfer behavior and their subsequent impact on energy consumption has received limited attention. This study experimentally investigates the regeneration heat duty (Q reg ) for CO 2 desorption from a 1-(Dimethylamino)-2-propanol (1DMA2P)/2-Methylaminoethanol (MAE) aqueous blend in a lab-scale stripper equipped with high-efficiency Sulzer DX structured packing. The effects of key operating parameters, including rich CO 2 loading, lean CO 2 loading, solution flow rate, amine concentration, and synergistic parameters (Δ α  ×  L and C  ×  L ), on Q reg were systematically analyzed. The experimental results showed that all these factors greatly influenced Q reg . For example, the Q reg decreases as the lean CO 2 loading (α lean ) , rich CO 2 loading (α rich ) , and 1DMA2P/MAE concentration (C) increase, indicating that the Q reg can be reduced by optimizing these operating parameters. Additionally, compared with MEA, 1DMA2P/MAE reduces energy consumption by 51.5 % and decreases the stripper height by 35 %. This study underscores the critical role of operating parameters in reducing CO 2 regeneration energy consumption. The findings provide valuable insights into optimizing stripper performance and demonstrate the advantages of the 1DMA2P/MAE blend as an energy-efficient alternative to MEA-based solvents in industrial CO 2 capture applications.

Mass-Transfer Performance of CO2 Absorption with Aqueous Diethylenetriamine-Based Solutions in a Packed Column with Dixon Rings

Miaopeng Sheng,Chenguang Liu,Chunyuan Ge,Moses Arowo,Yang Xiang,Baochang Sun,Guangwen Chu,Haikui Zou

This study investigated the absorption performance of CO2 into a diethylenetriamine (DETA)-based solution containing piperazine (PZ) or 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEPZ) as an activator in a packed column with Dixon rings. The effects of various operation conditions such as the activator concentration, gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, CO2 partial pressure, and solution temperature on overall gas-phase volumetric mass-transfer coefficient (KGav) were explored. Results indicate that the presence of PZ in DETA solution yields a better enhancement effect on KGav than AEPZ, and, thus, a combination of 5%PZ+25%DETA solution is expected to be a promising absorbent for CO2 absorption. The results further show that KGav increases with an increase in the liquid flow rate and a decrease in CO2 partial pressure and first increases and then decreases with an increase in solution temperature. On the other hand, the gas flow rate has an insignificant effect on KGav. A simplified empirical correlation for KGav as a function of the operation parameters has been proposed, and most of the calculated values are in agreement with the experimental data with a deviation within ±15%.

Optimization of carbon capture and storage technology using sodium alginate through response surface methodology

Muhammad Arqam Khan,Shaine Mohammadali Lalji,Moiz Ali Khan Sial,Areeba Batool,Mohsin Ayubi,Syed Imran Ali,Muhammad Mustafa,Mei-Chun Li

The increasing demand for sustainable carbon capture technologies necessitates the exploration of novel solvents for CO 2 absorption. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a critical technology for controlling greenhouse gas emissions and tackling climate change. This study investigated the efficiency of sodium alginate (Na-Alg) as a bio-based solvent in carbon capture technology using the simulation software, Aspen Plus. The model was developed to simulate the absorption of CO 2 in a tray column, and the performance of sodium alginate solution was analyzed using various key parameters, including temperature, pressure, and solvent flow rate, to maximize the carbon capture efficiency. The simulation was then validated with the help of existing literature and experimental data and was found to be in good correlation. The carbon capture efficiency of CO 2 was observed at 97 % using sodium alginate solution. The relations between process parameters and their influence on CO 2 capture were evaluated by applying response surface methodology, identifying optimal conditions at 10–20 °C, 10 bar pressure, and a solvent flow rate of 20–25 kmol/h. These findings highlight the potential of sodium alginate as an effective, eco-friendly solvent for CCS, offering both environmental and operational advantages. The study also demonstrates the utility of simulation and optimization techniques in enhancing CCS performance.

Absorption capacity and CO2 removal efficiency in tray tower by using 2-(ethylamino)ethanol activated 3-(dimethylamino)propan-1-ol aqueous solution

Kun Fu,Pan Zhang,Dong Fu

The absorption amount ( m ) and loading ( α ) of CO 2 in 2-(ethylamino)ethanol (EAE) activated 3-(dimethylamino)propan-1-ol (3DMA1P) aqueous solution were measured. The temperatures ranged from 303.2 K to 323.2 K. The mass fractions of 3DMA1P and EAE respectively ranged from 0.3 to 0.5 and 0.01 to 0.03. The effects of temperature ( T ) and mass fractions of amines ( w ) on the absorption performance were illustrated. It’s impressive that the addition of very small amounts of EAE into 3DMA1P aqueous solution significantly enhanced the absorption performance. Moreover, comparison showed that 3DMA1P-EAE aqueous solution appeared much higher CO 2 absorption capacity than the widely used MDEA-MEA aqueous solution. Tray towers with different plates ( N p  = 6, 8 and 10) were used to verify the removal efficiency of CO 2 ( η CO 2 ηCO2 ) and the effects of gas flow rate ( G ), absorbent flow rate ( L ), w , absorbent feed temperature ( T ) and N p on η CO 2 ηCO2 were illustrated. Our results showed that when composed of 30% to 50% (mass percent) 3DMA1P and 3% EAE, the absorbents achieved η CO 2 ηCO2 higher than 90%, which met the efficiency requirement specified in a power plant, thus leading to a promising industrial application in the CO 2 capture process.
