The structures of starch and starch-based materials determine additives migration from material matrix. Propionylated starch derived from waxy, normal, G50 and G80 starch were selected as the matrix, the amylose effect on plasticizer (triacetin) migration as well as structural changes in hydrophobic starch-based films were discussed. The constant ( k 1 ) of first-order rate and initial release rate ( V 0 ) of triacetin migration were consistent with the increment of amylose content. Meanwhile, diffusion model disclosed that Fick's second law was apposite to characterize the short-term migration of triacetin, and larger diffusion coefficient ( D ) values of short- and long-term migration were also found in films with higher amylose content, indicating that amylose-formed structures were in favor of triacetin migration. In comparison of propionylated amylopectin , Van der Waals's interactions between propionylated amylose and triacetin were easier to be weakened with the migration of triacetin, which promoted the decrease of wavenumber of C-O-C, and enlarged the inter-planner spacing of crystalline structures, promoting the formation of amorphous structures and wrinkles and embossments in films with higher amylose content. This work confirmed that regulating the structures of starch were effective to control the migration behavior of additives from starch-based films.

This work revealed the influence of thermal processing on the microstructural, mesoscopic and molecular scale structures and thus the plasticizer migration of the starch ester films. Thermal processing promoted the permeation of water molecules to hinder the shrink of the amorphous macromolecules. That is, the swelling of the amorphous macromolecules diminished the ordered regions to a certain degree, resulting in the enlarged amorphous regions. Along with slight degradation of the macromolecules, the crystallites were partially disorganized, as indicated by a reduced relative crystallinity. These multi-scale structural changes of the films and the thermally enhanced mobility of plasticizer molecules synergistically enhanced the plasticizer migration. This study not only enables a well understanding of how thermal treatment alters the plasticizer migration of starch-based films from a multi-scale structural view, but also hints to our future work that rationally modulating the structural features of starch-based film may effectively control the migration of chemicals.

Migration of additives is an important issue for proper application in food packaging. In this work, propionylated waxy and normal starch-based nanocomposites (PW-N and PN-N) with two different amylopectin content were immersed in distilled water, and structural changes and migration mechanism of plasticizer (triacetin) were discussed in detail. Results showed that when immersion time was prolonged to 150 h, small crystals of PN-N disappeared, and amorphous structures formed gradually in PW-N and PN-N. Exfoliated structures still remained in PW-N with prolonged immersion time, while exfoliated structures gradually formed from intercalated ones in PN-N, and the peak representing d001 ( d -spacing) at q = 1.70 nm −1 faded. The migration mechanism of triacetin obeyed the first-order kinetic model and Fick's law; furthermore, in comparison with PW-N, PN-N showed a larger diffusion coefficient ( D 2 = 12.13 μ m 2 ·h −1 ). These results contributed to expanding the application of starch-based nanocomposites in future environmentally friendly food packaging.

The effect of microwave treatment on the plasticizer migration and the changes in multi-scale structures of starch ester films for food packaging were evaluated, and the relationship between these structural changes and plasticizer migration was revealed. The plasticizer migration from the starch ester film to the milk system was accelerated during microwave heating compared with during simple immersion at 30 °C without microwave. After microwave heating, the water and/or fat molecules of the milk system rapidly permeated the film interface to enlarge the interchain spaces. The plasticizer molecules distributed near the boundary more readily migrated out than those located in the matrix interior. The changes in the plasticizer/starch ester interaction and film structures weakened the stability of the ether bond both in the plasticizer and starch ester molecules. The crystalline structure of the film was changed with a certain degree of destruction and the relevant interplanar spacing was decreased. The milk permeation into the amorphous region of the film impeded the shrinkage and aggregation of amorphous starch ester chains and even enlarged the inter-chain distances in this region. However, the ordered microaggregations were shrunk with reduced polydisperse size distribution. In consequence, the aggregation structure showed less restriction to the activated plasticizer molecules as a result of microwave treatment. These structural changes, including the expanded amorphous region and shrunk ordered microregions, could be the reason for the greater plasticizer migration during the microwave treatment. This knowledge will help us in further designing the starch-based materials with restrained plasticizer migration by controlling the molecular interaction, crystalline structure and ordered aggregation structure within the film matrix for safe and reasonable application of this type of packaging materials.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used in food packaging, but the processing aids that include materials such as plasticizers and antioxidants may migrate to food, thereby harming the food quality and human health. To develop packaging materials with lesser plasticizer migration and to understand the anti-migration mechanism, a SiO x layer was deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) on a PET substrate to prepare a composite film. The effects of SiO x layers with different thicknesses on blocking the migration of dioctyl phthalate (DEHP, a plasticizer) and Irganox 1010 (an antioxidant) from the PET substrate into the food simulant were investigated at three temperatures. The migration of additives from both pristine and SiO x -coated films increased with an increase in the contact time and temperature. However, compared with the pristine film, the specific migration rates of DEHP can be reduced by up to 88.57% in the 320-nm SiO x /PET composite film, while that of Irganox 1010 can reach 82.61%. For a fixed SiO x layer thickness, the DEHP migration is not greatly affected by temperature, while that of Irganox 1010 migration decreased at higher temperatures. In addition, a 320-nm SiO x layer effectively retarded the transmission of water vapor and oxygen through the composite film to 77.3% and 79.3% lesser than those of the pristine PET film, respectively. The SEM image showed that the surface of the composite film was denser and more uniform than a pristine PET film, which also confirmed that the SiO x layer can block the migration of additives.

Plasticizers enhance the flexibility of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products but may migrate over time, posing potential health risks. This study quantified migration rates of ten phthalate and non-phthalate plasticizers from PVC sheet specimens into artificial saliva and sweat, across plasticizer contents ranging from 20 to 50 wt%. Migration experiments at 37 °C, followed by GC-TOF/MS analysis, revealed linear relationships between plasticizer content and both ingestion and dermal migration rates for most compounds. DBP, DiBP, and DiNA exhibited the highest migration (> 0.33 μg/cm 2 /min in saliva; > 3.23 ng/cm 2 /min in sweat), whereas DEHA and DnOP demonstrated minimal release. Key molecular descriptors − including measured content (MC), estimated solubility (ESOL), SpMax2_Bhi, and total connectivity index (Xt) − showed significant correlations with migration behaviors. Multiple linear regression and robust regression models were developed to predict ingestion and dermal migration, achieving R 2 = 0.70 (RMSE = 0.238) and Pseudo R 2 = 0.89, respectively. Internal 5-fold cross-validation confirmed model stability, although external validation revealed limitations related to dataset dependency. Despite these constraints, the proposed models offer a practical and rapid screening approach for estimating plasticizer release and potential human exposure from consumer products.

In this work, the migration of urea and/or formamide plasticizers in crosslinked starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films under UV irradiation has been accurately quantified by using a combination of GC-MS/MS and UV–Vis analysis. The crosslinked starch/PVA films, prepared with different amide plasticizers (urea, formamide, urea-formamide), were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After 7 days of UV irradiation, the starch/PVA film plasticized with urea-formamide (A 7 -SPF-UF) exhibited a flat surface morphology, high crystal stability, and highest thermal stability. The migration ratio of urea and formamide for A 7 -SPF-UF was also quantified to be 3.2 % and 4.5 %, respectively, using GC-MS/MS and UV–Vis analysis, indicating optimal migration resistance. The synergistic effect of urea and formamide as plasticizers built the dense network structure of A n -SPF-UF and improved the UV aging resistance, toughness and durability of the film. On one hand, this enhances the market competitiveness of the products; on the other hand, it promotes the development of environmentally friendly materials, aligning with sustainability requirements.

Migration is an important issue for the security in food packaging. In this work, the migration mechanism of plasticizer in G50 starch ester nanocomposites and accompanying multi-scale structural changes were probed with immersion. Mathematical model manifested that the migration mechanism of plasticizer obeyed the first-order kinetic model, and the migration of plasticizer followed the Fick’s second law in the short-term migration. In the meantime, the interactions between G50 starch ester and nanoparticles (OMMT) were enhanced by the migration, which was in favor of reducing the migration and bringing about a smaller diffusion coefficient ( D ) in the long-term migration compared with short-term ones. Meanwhile, the strengthened interactions conduced to accelerating the motion of starch ester, and altering the dispersion of OMMT, which resulted in the transformation from intercalation to exfoliation with the vanish of small inter-planar spaces for crystals. Simultaneously, these conversions increased the electron density contrast in amorphous and ordered regions, showing an increment of the roughness with wrinkles in the cross-sections. Based on above researches, the migration behaviors of plasticizer in starch ester nanocomposites were well expounded, while it is still necessary to explore new ways to inhibiting the migration of plasticizer in food packaging materials.
