An inorganic–organic hybrid material, poly(dimethylsilylene ethynylenephenyleneethynylene) (PMSEPE), was synthesized in a mild condition and its microfiber was successfully produced by melt electrospinning. The electrospinning parameters, which affected the morphology and diameter of fibers, were well investigated. To maintain the fiber structure at thermal cured temperature (above melting point), the PMSEPE fibers were enhanced via thiol-yne photo polymerization. Followed by the thermal curing reaction, the heat-resistance and mechanical properties of fibers were enhanced. The mechanism of two-step curing was explored and confirmed by means of Fourier transform infrared, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Thermaogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy results show that after carbonization at 800 °C, the two-step cured fibers had only a small weight loss (20%) and the fibers can still maintain the original morphology. Moreover, the two-step cured fiber exhibited a high tensile strength (55.4 MPa) and a small elongation at break (0.02%). All the results indicate that the fibers could be applied as fiber-reinforced materials. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2017 , 55 , 2815–2823

The integration of bio-based functional agents with biopolymers is welcomed as a way of meeting the growing demand for healthy, safety, and sustainability. This study presents a facile and solvent-free fabrication of flame retardant (FR), UV protective, and reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composite using two bio-based complexing couples: tannin acid/ferric salt (TAFe) and chitosan/phytic acid (CTSPA). The thermal and burning properties of PLA composites were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limited oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, and cone calorimetry . The UV protective and tensile properties were also evaluated. PLA/TAFe and PLA/CTSPA showed earlier mass loss and higher char residue than pristine PLA. CTSPA (3 wt%) enhanced the LOI value of PLA from 19.6% to 30.5%. PLA/CTSPA and PLA/TAFe/CTSPA achieved V-0 ratings in UL-94 test with slight melt dripping. Cone calorimetry demonstrated that 2.5 wt% apiece of TAFe and CTSPA led to obvious reductions in peak heat release rate and total heat release. Interestingly, the combination of TAFe and CTSPA was effective in suppressing CO production. PLA/TAFe had a higher UPF value (50+) and tensile strength than pristine PLA. In conclusion, the sustainable strategy developed in this study represents the concept of fabricating fully bio-based polymer composites via a solvent-free process, which can also be generalized into the eco-design for other multifunctional polymer systems .

Purpose To evaluate the effect of cement augmentation of cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screws using a novel calcium phosphate–based nanocomposite (CPN).Material and Methods CBT screws were placed into cadaveric lumbar vertebrae. Depending on the material used for augmentation, they were divided into the following three groups: CPN, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and control. Radiological imaging was used to evaluate the cement dispersion. Biomechanical tests were conducted to measure the stability of CBT screws. A rat cranial defect model was used to evaluate biodegradation and osseointegration of the CPN.Results After cement augmentation, the CPN tended to disperse into the distal part of the screws, whereas PMMA remained limited to the proximal part of the screws (P < 0.05). As for cement morphology, the CPN tended to form a concentrated mass, whereas PMMA arranged itself as a scattered cement cloud, but the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). The axial pullout test showed that the average maximal pullout force (Fmax) of CPN-augmented CBT screws was similar to that of the PMMA group (CPN, 1639.56 ± 358.21 N vs PMMA, 1778.45 ± 399.83 N; P = 0.745) and was significantly greater than that of the control group (1019.01 ± 371.98 N; P < 0.05). The average torque value in the CPN group was higher than that in the control group (CPN, 1.51 ± 0.78 N∙m vs control, 0.97 ± 0.58 N∙m) and lower than that in the PMMA group (1.93 ± 0.81 N∙m), but there were no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05). The CPN could be biodegraded and gradually replaced by newly formed bone tissue after 12 weeks in a rat cranial defect model. Conclusion The biocompatible CPN could be a valuable augmentation material to enhance CBT screw stability.

We explored a novel three-dimensional reinforcement consist of petal-like epoxy functionalized graphene oxide (EG) and amine-capped polyphosphazene modified carbon fibers (CF-ACP). The grafted EG sheets with numerous epoxy groups obviously changes the surface topography of carbon fibers. A significant improvement of interfacial shear strength was achieved from 47.3 MPa for virgin CF composites to 97.7 MPa for functionalized CF composites. Therefore, such multiscale reinforced composites show great potential to be used as high-performance structural applications.

In this study, vanadium carbide (VC) was used as the raw material to synthesize PDA-functionalized VC (P-VC). VC and P-VC were added as nanoreinforced materials to the Ni–W–B coating. The effects of the two nanomaterials on the morphology, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the Ni–W–B coatings were investigated and compared. The experimental results show that the surface of the Ni–W–B/P-VC coating is denser and more uniform than that of the Ni–W–B and Ni–W–B/VC coatings, and there are no obvious defects on the surface. According to the hardness test, the Ni–W–B/P-VC coating reaches the highest microhardness of 887.1 HV. According to the friction and wear tests, the Ni–W–B/P-VC coating has the shallowest scratches, the lowest average friction coefficient (COF = 0.274), and the lowest wear rate (9.578 × 10–8 mm2/N). The corrosion resistance is the best, the corrosion rate is 0.0456 mm/y, and the impedance value Rt reaches 14,501 Ω·cm2.
