Single-particle (SP) sensing technology provides a methodology to explore the biochemical process in a micro/nanosize area (super-high resolution) with high sensitivity. Plasmonic nanoparticle is promising as a substrate for single-particle sensing. To realize specific sensing, a modification layer on the surface of the plasmonic nanoparticle is usually in need. However, a challenge stands in the way: the traditional coating of modification layer can deplete the highly enhanced electric field (EF) around the plasmonic particle and also, perhaps, hinder the analytes moving into the sensing hot spot with the most enhanced EF; thereby, the plasmonic particle cannot perform with super-high sensitivity. To solve this problem, we demonstrated an innovative single plasmonic particle sensing system in this work. In a convenient and controllable way, a single gold nanorod (AuNR) was successfully modified by monolayer WS2. There is an energy interaction between the AuNR and WS2, and thus, an exposed sensing hot spot with a nondepleted enhanced EF exists at the interface, which equips the as-prepared AuNR-WS2 SP with the ability to detect small changes in the local dielectric environment. Meanwhile, the monolayer WS2 also acted as a specific modification layer for detecting different analytes. We applied the AuNR-WS2 SP to explore the adsorption kinetics of different gas molecules, including ammonia, ethanol, and acetone for the first time. Through monitoring the scattering spectra under a microscope in dark-field, AuNR-WS2 SP could successfully differentiate the three small molecules, and help to explore the adsorption kinetics of them. Our experimental results were consistent with theoretical simulation in SP’s EF distribution and its scattering spectra under different dielectric environments. Additionally, this proposed interaction-based modification strategy was also applied to other plasmonic nanoparticles, such as Au@Ag nanocube and Au nanodisk, suggesting the universality of this innovative SP sensing system.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been widely utilized as an effective substrate for triggering molecular ionization upon photoexcitation. However, its underlying mechanism(s) remains unclear. Here, by blocking heat transfer and electron transfer on photo-excited AuNPs with a thin layer of silica shell (i.e., Au@SiO2 NPs), the critical role of the enhanced E-field in ionizing nearby molecules was evidenced. The enhanced E-field of the Au core could enhance the protonation of amino acids (via short-range interaction) by polarizing the analyte molecules. In contrast, the polarizability of the Au core showed a more pronounced effect to enhance the metal cationization process (Na+ and K+ adduction via long-range interaction) by polarizing both the analyte molecules and metal ions and was successfully applied to the sensitive analysis of amino acids in human serum.

Hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis is significantly hindered by high energy costs and undesirable detrimental chlorine chemistry in seawater. In this work, energy-saving hydrogen production is reported by chlorine-free seawater splitting coupling tip-enhanced electric field promoted electrocatalytic sulfion oxidation reaction. We present a bifunctional needle-like Co 3 S 4 catalyst grown on nickel foam with a unique tip structure that enhances the kinetic rate by improving the current density in the tip region. The assembled hybrid seawater electrolyzer combines thermodynamically favorable sulfion oxidation and cathodic seawater reduction can enable sustainable hydrogen production at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 for up to 504 h. The hybrid seawater electrolyzer has the potential for scale-up industrial implementation of hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis, which is promising to achieve high economic efficiency and environmental remediation.

High-curvature multi-noble metallic heterostructures can effectively enhance the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance by utilizing the synergism of tip-enhanced electric field effect and local electric field effect. Herein, we report a two-step synthesis strategy to obtain multi-branched high-curvature AgAuPt heterostructure, firstly amino acids-induced growth of Au branches on Ag nanocubes, and secondly L -AA reduction of H 2 PtCl 6 to incorporate tiny Pt nanoparticles on Au branches. The D -CAgAuPt results in a low overpotential of 38 mV to deliver a cathodic current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is superior to commercial 20% Pt/C (46 mV). The strong electronic interactions between multi-noble metals intrinsically enhance the durability and stability of the catalysts. The intrinsic mechanism of promoting HER performance is investigated and revealed in-depth via the FDTD simulations and DFT calculations. In addition, D -CAgAuPt can also achieve efficient and stable hydrogen evolution in a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, which has the potential for commercial practical application. This work designs a novel multi-branched high-curvature multi-noble metallic heterostructure, and fully provides insights into the generical and efficient enhancement of electrocatalytic HER performance of multi-noble metallic heterostructures.
