Energy-level rich nanorings hybridizing Ag, Au and AgCl as high-performance SERS substrate for numerous molecules

Rongjing Hu,Shilan Fu,Yongcong Zhou,Zhenyu Lin,Fengfu Fu,Yongqiang Dong

The current surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates typically feature a single energy level, posing challenges in coordinating electromagnetic enhancement (EM) and chemical enhancement (CM), thereby limiting the sensitive detection of numerous crucial target molecules. In this study, novel aggregated nanorings (a-NRs) hybridizing Ag, Au and AgCl are constructed as SERS substrates. On one hand, the obtained a-NRs exhibit robust localized surface plasmon resonance absorption, whose wavelength can be tuned to match three commonly used laser wavelengths (532, 633 and 785 nm) to gain strong EM effect. On the other hand, these materials possess the Fermi levels of Au nanoparticles and Au/Ag alloy, in addition to the valence band and conduction band of AgCl. The abundant energy levels of the obtained a-NRs facilitate increased charge transfer opportunities for molecules, leading to a strong CM effect. Therefore, the obtained a-NRs show ultra-high SERS sensitivity towards numerous molecules. Moreover, the unique chemical composition makes the obtained a-NRs have good long-term stability in terms of SERS activity. Besides providing high-performance SERS substrates, the valuable experience for coordinating EM and CM to construct highly active SERS substrate demonstrated in this work are expected to significantly advance the application of SERS.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering nanotag of tunable ZIF-8 shell-encapsulated magnetic core-plasmonic satellites for disentangling chemical enhancement from electromagnetic enhancement

Hao Chen,ZhaoGuo Wu,AiWu Zhao,Jin Wang

To enhance the stability of Raman reporters, these reporters were trapped in a metal organic framework (MOF) exoskeleton that was grown and compressed on Fe3O4@Au core–satellites, producing recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanotags. Furthermore, encapsulation of Raman reporters in the assembled MOF-based nanocomposites was divided into two types of patterns, pre-enrichment and post-enrichment, in order to disentangle chemical enhancement of charge transfer (CT) from electromagnetic enhancement (EM) in SERS. Hence, to demonstrate the effect of encapsulation, a typical non-thiolated Raman reporter, for example crystal violet (CV) trapped in a core–satellite nanoassembly-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) shell, was selected. The results suggest that stability and Raman intensity are remarkably improved. Moreover, the pattern of incorporation of CV into the ZIF-8 shell with tunable shell thickness can contribute to the disentangling of CT effects from EM effects.

Unraveling the Raman Enhancement Mechanism on 1T′-Phase ReS2 Nanosheets

Peng Miao,Jing-Kai Qin,Yunfeng Shen,Huimin Su,Junfeng Dai,Bo Song,Yunchen Du,Mengtao Sun,Wei Zhang,Hsing-Lin Wang,Cheng-Yan Xu,Ping Xu

2D transition metal dichalcogenides materials are explored as potential surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates. Herein, a systematic study of the Raman enhancement mechanism on distorted 1T (1T′) rhenium disulfide (ReS 2 ) nanosheets is demonstrated. Combined Raman and photoluminescence studies with the introduction of an Al 2 O 3 dielectric layer unambiguously reveal that Raman enhancement on ReS 2 materials is from a charge transfer process rather than from an energy transfer process, and Raman enhancement is inversely proportional while the photoluminescence quenching effect is proportional to the layer number (thickness) of ReS 2 nanosheets. On monolayer ReS 2 film, a strong resonance-enhanced Raman scattering effect dependent on the laser excitation energy is detected, and a detection limit as low as 10 −9 m can be reached from the studied dye molecules such as rhodamine 6G and methylene blue. Such a high enhancement factor achieved through enhanced charge interaction between target molecule and substrate suggests that with careful consideration of the layer-number-dependent feature and excitation-energy-related resonance effect, ReS 2 is a promising Raman enhancement platform for sensing applications.

Plasmon-exciton coupling by hybrids between graphene and gold nanorods vertical array for sensor

Xing Zhao,Jun Dong,En Cao,Qingyan Han,Wei Gao,Yongkai Wang,Jianxia Qi,Mengtao Sun

The graphene/gold nanorods vertical array (G/GNRs-VA) hybrid substrate was fabricated by self-assembly and wet-etching method, which demonstrated high performance in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). By combining the excellent electromagnetic (EM) enhancement of the GNRs-VA and the distinctive physical/chemical properties of graphene, the G/GNRs-VA hybrid substrate has high sensitivity, which can detect Raman signal of Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) at concentrations as low as 10 −13   M. This phenomenon can be easily reproduced in our experiment. Among these randomly selected points, we calculated the relative standard deviations (RSD) at 1360   cm −1 and 1650   cm −1 , and got the results as7.2% and 7.3%, respectively. Compared with GNRs-VA, hybrid substrates exhibit stronger Raman signal, which is mainly attributed to chemical enhancement (CM) of graphene. COMSOL software was used to simulate local electromagnetic field of the SERS substrate, which is consistent with experimental result. Moreover, G/GNRs-VA hybrid substrate can simultaneously detect Raman signals of Rh6G and crystal violet (CV) at concentration of 10 −9   M. These indicate that the G/GNRs-VA hybrid substrate could provide reliable support for developing environmental detection and biomedical diagnostics.

Facile preparation of Cu2-xS supernanoparticles with an unambiguous SERS enhancement mechanism

Jun Zhang,Tingyang Xing,Min Zhang,Yunlong Zhou

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) techniques benefit from the development of various substrates ranging from noble metal to semiconductor materials. Semiconductor substrates have been assumed to construct more specific structures and designable surface chemistry than noble metal substrates. Therefore, the development of semiconductor substrates may lead to the selective recognition of target molecules, more stable SERS spectra, and even low-cost fabrication of SERS substrates. In this paper, we disclose semiconductor supernanoparticles formed by a self-limiting assembly process with stable properties, easy scale-up fabrication, and high SERS enhancement. The detected concentration of analytes reaches as low as 10 −8  M. The built-in hotspots and self-doping in suprananoparticles provide strong electromagnetic enhancement, and the molecular resonance and charge transfer with the target molecule contribute to chemical enhancement. Discrete dipole approximation simulation was used to further confirm the SERS enhancement mechanism. Cu 2-x S supernanoparticles paved a new way to construct novel semiconductors with SERS activity.

Niobium pentoxide: a promising surface-enhanced Raman scattering active semiconductor substrate

Shan Yufeng,Zheng Zhihui,Liu Jianjun,Yang Yong,Li Zhiyuan,Huang Zhengren,Jiang Dongliang

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering technique, as a powerful tool to identify the molecular species, has been severely restricted to the noble metals. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates based on semiconductors would overcome the shortcomings of metal substrates and promote development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering technique in surface science, spectroscopy, and biomedicine studies. However, the detection sensitivity and enhancement effects of semiconductor substrates are suffering from their weak activities. In this work, a semiconductor based on Nb 2 O 5 is reported as a new candidate for highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection of dye molecules. The largest enhancement factor value greater than 10 7 was observed with the laser excitation at 633 and 780 nm for methylene blue detection. As far as literature review shows, this is in the rank of the highest sensitivity among semiconductor materials; even comparable to the metal nanostructure substrates with “hot spots”. The impressive surface-enhanced Raman scattering activities can be attributed to the chemical enhancement dominated by the photo-induced charge transfer, as well as the electromagnetic enhancement, which have been supported by the density-functional-theory and finite element method calculation results. The chemisorption of dye on Nb 2 O 5 creates a new highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital contributed by both fragments in the molecule-Nb 2 O 5 system, which makes the charge transfer more feasible with longer excitation wavelength. In addition, the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism also accounts for two orders of magnitude enhancement in the overall enhancement factor value. This work has revealed Nb 2 O 5 nanoparticles as a new semiconductor surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate that is able to replace noble metals and shows great potentials applied in the fields of biology related.

Preparation and surface-enhanced Raman scattering properties of GO/Ag/Ta2O5 composite substrates

Zhiyuan Zhang,Zhaoxiang Li,Luyao Wang,Jinmeng Li,Jie Pan,Shuyun Wang,Chao Zhang,Zhen Li,Qianqian Peng,Xianwu Xiu

The composite substrate composed of precious metal, semiconductor and graphene has not only high sensitivity and uniform Raman signal but also stable chemical properties, which is one of the important topics in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In this paper, a sandwich SERS substrate based on tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) is designed and fabricated. The substrate has high sensitivity, stable performance and high quantification capability. The composite substrate can achieve a high sensitivity Raman detection of crystal violet (CV) with a detection limit of 10−11 M and an enhancement factor of 1.5 × 109. This is the result of the synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement and chemical enhancement, in which the chemical enhancement is the cooperative charge transfer in the system composed of probe molecules, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Ta2O5, and the electromagnetic enhancement comes from the strong local surface plasmon resonance between the adjacent AgNPs. After exposing the composite substrate to the air for one month, the Raman signal did not weaken, indicating that the performance of the composite substrate is stable. In addition, there is an excellent linear relationship between the intensity of Raman characteristic peak and the concentration of probe molecules, which proves that the composite substrate has high quantification capability. In practical application, the composite SERS substrate can be used to detect harmful malachite green quickly and sensitively and has a broad application prospect in the field of food safety and chemical analysis.

Facile synthesis of novel Ni-BDC-NH2/Au NPs SERS substrates with synergistic enhancement effects for high-performance detection

Xinxing Jiang,Jihong Fu,Shuxian Ren,WenXia Xue

Substrate materials with high sensitivity and good reproducibility are highly desirable for the practical applications of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) techniques. In this study, a novel Ni-based metal-organic frameworks loaded gold nanoparticles (Ni-BDC-NH2/Au NPs) SERS substrate was successfully synthesized via electrostatic self-assembly method. The enhancement of the SERS signal is achieved owing to the synergy between chemical enhancement (CM) effect of Ni-BDC-NH2 and the electromagnetic enhancement (EM) of Au NPs, and the enriching of the analyte near the SERS “hot spots” through the strong adsorption capacity of the Ni-BDC-NH2. The Ni-BDC-NH2/Au NPs exhibited a high enhancement factor (EF) of 1.10×107 and a low detection limit of 5×10-9 mol/L. Besides, the substrate material showed exceptional stability up to 45 days at room temperature. The Ni-BDC-NH2/Au NPs was used to detect methylene blue (MB) that displayed a wide linearity (5×10-7-5×10-5 mol/L) and high recoveries (86.82-104.46%). These indicate that the Ni-BDC-NH2/Au NPs hybrid substrate has great potential for the detection of environmental pollution in practical applications.

Flower-like Ag coated with molecularly imprinted polymers as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate for the sensitive and selective detection of glibenclamide

Xiaohui Ren,Xin Li

Flower-like Ag was formed by nanosheet self-assembly as a SERS-active substrate and was utilized for the preparation of flower-like Ag@molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor. Based on the combination of the molecular imprinting technique and SERS technology, the flower-like Ag@MIPs with high sensitivity and excellent selectivity were used as SERS substrates for the detection of glibenclamide. The imprinted layer could effectively protect the flower-like Ag from oxidation and thereby may improve the stability of the SERS substrate. The intensities of the characteristic peaks obtained for the flower-like Ag@MIPs were higher than that of flower-like Ag. By applying the flower-like Ag@MIPs as an efficient and ultra-sensitive SERS platform, glibenclamide was quantitatively detected in trace concentrations as low as 1 ng mL−1. Furthermore, the SERS enhancement for the flower-like Ag@MIPs was due to the synergetic effect between electromagnetic enhancement and chemical enhancement. We believe that this reliable method can open up new opportunities for practical chemosensor or biosensor applications.

Li Yang,Qixin Chen,Yiheng Yuan,Xishun Peng,Xinghua Li,Cheng Zuo,Zhangyu Zhou,Zhongchen Bai

Detecting γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the mammalian body is vital for diagnosing neurological disorders. Here, we introduced a novel SERS sensor based on metal-semiconductor heterojunction ZnO/Cu@Ag substrate for highly sensitive detecting GABA molecules. The ZnO/Cu@Ag substrate fully leverages the electromagnetic field enhancement effect and the chemical enhancement effect of metal-semiconductors heterojunction, exhibiting an excellent enhancement factor of 2.23 × 10 6 and a low limit-of-detection (LOD) of 3.84 nM for GABA molecules in water. Moreover, the ZnO/Cu@Ag substrate could recognize 10 nM GABA molecules in human serum. This GABA SERS sensor provides a reliable tool and technological support for research and applications in neuroscience and medicine.

Metal-enhanced fluorometric formaldehyde assay based on the use of in-situ grown silver nanoparticles on silica-encapsulated carbon dots

Yang Weiqiang,Zhang Guiyun,Ni Jiancong,Lin Zhenyu

Fluorescent nanoparticles were prepared by encapsulating carbon dots (CDs) within silica spheres and then modifying these spheres with amino groups (CD@SiO 2 -NH 2 ). On the basis of the silver mirror reaction, Ag + assembled on the surface of CD@SiO 2 -NH 2 is reduced to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by formaldehyde. The in-situ grown AgNPs cause a visually distinguishable fluorescence enhancement. This metal-enhanced effect was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic characterization, and the relevant conditions were optimized. CD@SiO 2 -NH 2 -Ag + fluorescent probes were loaded onto nano-sponge pieces for the analysis of formaldehyde gas. The blue fluorescence emission (peaking at 466 nm) in response to formaldehyde is greatly enhanced (up to 5.2 times) over other species. There is a linear relationship between the fluorescence enhancement and formaldehyde gas concentration in the range of 10 ppb to 1 ppm, and the detection limit is 3 ppb. The fluorimetric assay needs 30 min for the reaction, and the fluorescent nano-sponge pieces are disposable. Schematic representation of the metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) induced by in-situ grown silver nanoparticles on silica-encapsulated carbon dots, and its application in formaldehyde gas assays.

Size and distance dependent fluorescence enhancement of nanoporous gold

Chao Chen,Ling Zhang,Min Yang,Chunxian Tao,Zhaoxia Han,Bin Chen,Heping Zeng

Nanoporous gold (NPG) has been reported to provide remarkable fluorescence enhancement of adjacent fluorophores due to the metal-enhanced fluorescence phenomenon (MEF), and the enhancement is related with the characteristic length of nanoporosity. To fully understand the effect of NPG on nearby fluorophores, it is desirable to study systems with well-defined metal-fluorophore distances. In this study we investigated the distance effect by using silica as the spacing layer between fluorophores and NPG. Originating from competition between plasmonic amplifying and metallic quenching, the dye molecule rhodamine 6G was best enhanced by 20-nm SiO2 coated nanoporous gold with the pore size of 36 nm, while the protein phycoerythrin was best enhanced by 15-nm SiO2 coated nanoporous gold with the pore size of 42 nm and the quantum dots were best enhanced by 20-nm SiO2 coated nanoporous gold with the pore size of 42 nm.
