Optimization of cinnamaldehyde microcapsule wall materials by experimental and quantitative methods

Mengting Li,Changgui Li,You Zhou,Hua Tian,Qiaoyuan Deng,Haifang Liu,Li Zhu,Xueqiong Yin

Microencapsulation is a widely-investigated technique used for the unstable material preservation since the wall materials prevent the core materials from loss and deterioration. To improve the stability of cinnamaldehyde (CAL), different microcapsule wall systems are fabricated by spray-drying, and then characterized by experimental methods to determine the most suitable wall materials. Surface morphology, encapsulation efficiency, effective loading capacity, as well as moisture absorption property are evaluated, and the results suggest that a three-matrix system of methyl cellulose (MC)/sodium alginate (SA)/MC or MC/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC)/SA wall formulation is more suitable for CAL microencapsulation. Moreover, a novel quantitative method is also proposed to verify the most stable wall material microencapsulation. The quantitative results show that the highest activation energy (53.00 ± 2.24 kJ/mol) is observed for the MC/CMC/SA-encapsulated CAL microcapsule. Taken together, the results suggest that MC/CMC/SA wall formulation shows excellent barrier properties and is superior to other wall materials in preventing microencapsulated CAL deterioration. This study will be efficient in designing an ideal capsule for CAL microencapsulation.

Analysis of Burning Rate Variation of Tungsten Delay Composition Close to Zero Oxygen Balance

Yuan-Gen Lu,Bo Hao,Geng Chen,Cai-Xian Xu,Li Zhang

Tungsten delay compositions are widely utilized in ammunition, small detonators, and other devices. In this study, we first explored the changes in the burning rate of micron-sized tungsten delay compositions (W/BaCrO 4 /KClO 4 ) when achieving zero oxygen balance under different material tube walls. Subsequently, SiO 2 , CuO, BN, and shellac were added to the tungsten delay composition to investigate the burning rate variations of different samples in aluminum tubes. The experimental results reveal that the combustion rate of the tungsten delay composition decreases with an increase in the thermal conductivity of the tube wall. The content of BN exhibits a linear relationship with the combustion rate of the tungsten delay composition, the combustion rate of the tungsten delay composition decreases with the increase of the mass percentage of BN. A small amount of SiO 2 , CuO, and shellac accelerates the combustion rate of the tungsten delay composition, but the combustion rate decreases as the content of these additives increases. The conclusion of this study can provide a wider range of delay times for delay devices with significant spatial limitations.

Preparation and Thermodynamic Analysis of Easily Degradable Capsule Wall Materials

Weikai Meng,Hai Zhang,Lei Cao,Xinzi Li,Yujia Mao,Junping Zheng,Xiaofei Liu

Graphical This study explores thermally degradable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) capsule wall materials tailored for deep oilfield environments. The hydrothermal degradation properties of PUA at 150 °C are improved by molecular structure adjustment and incorporation of α-MeSt. The thermal degradation kinetics of PUA is systematically investigated using the Kissinger method and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa method. To meet the practical needs of oilfield capsule acids, series thermos-degradable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) capsule wall materials are prepared. The PUA consist of light-curing co-polymerization of isophorone diisocyanate, polybutylene glycol adipate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, α-methylstyrene (α-MeSt), and other acrylate monomers. The successful synthesis of the polymer is confirmed by IR and the successful preparation of capsule acid is demonstrated by SEM. The mechanical properties of PUA are tested using an electronic tensile strength tester. The polymer residual content under hydrothermal conditions at 150 °C proves the hot water degradation ability of polyester-type PUA is better than that of polyether-type PUA and the degradation ability can be improved with the increase of α-MeSt content. For elucidating the thermal degradation phenomenon of PUA, the initial decomposition of the copolymers at relative low temperatures is monitored by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that the PUA with the addition of the α-MeSt monomer have a thermal effect at about 140 °C and begin to undergo thermal degradation. The thermal degradation kinetics are systematically investigated by Kissinger method and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method, which explain that the degradation activation energy value of PUA decreased with the increase of the content of α-MeSt units.

Robust and Eco-Friendly Waterborne Phase-Change Composite Protective Coatings Containing Paraffin-Loaded SiO2/Fe3O4 Hybrid Wall Microcapsules and Their Application in Long-Term Effective Temperature Regulation of the Protected Substrate

Yingjie Ma,Baolei Liu,Dewen Sun,Dongfang Wang,Yabin Ma,Qianping Ran

SiO2/Fe3O4 hybrid wall microcapsules containing a paraffin core were successfully fabricated by Pickering emulsion template self-assembly and sol–gel technologies. The walls of these microcapsules were embedded with different dosages of Fe3O4 nanoparticles due to the effect of Fe3O4 Pickering emulsion of different concentrations. The resultant microcapsules exhibited a regular spherical morphology and a rough outer surface compared with that of the SiO2 wall. Thermal analysis indicated that the encapsulation efficiency (Een), thermal energy-storage efficiency (Ees), and thermal conductivity of paraffin@SiO2/Fe3O4 hybrid wall microcapsules prepared with 0.01 mol/L Fe3O4 Pickering emulsion [Pa@SiO2/Fe3O4-Ms (0.01)] increased by 16.71%, 16.88%, and 28.4% compared with those of paraffin@SiO2 microcapsules (Pa@SiO2-Ms), respectively. The phase-change temperatures and enthalpy of Pa@SiO2/Fe3O4-Ms (0.01) with an 80–100 μm particle size range changed little after 300 thermal cycles. At the same time, these microcapsules were introduced into water-based acrylic resin paint to prepare phase-change composite protective coatings (PCCPCs) and exhibited excellent thermoregulatory performance. The real-time temperature difference and temperature ramp rate of PCCPCs incorporating 5 wt % (80–100 μm) Pa@SiO2/Fe3O4-Ms (0.01) increased by 4.6 °C and decreased by 2.45 °C/min compared to that of the pure coating, respectively. Meanwhile, the fluctuation amplitude and fluctuation frequency of the average temperature on the back side of 5 wt % (80–100 μm) Pa@SiO2/Fe3O4-Ms (0.01)-PCCPCs decreased by 3.8 °C and extended by 395 s compared to that of the pure coating under one heating and cooling cycle, respectively. This study will provide great potential applications for addressing the risk of shrinkage deformation and cracking of the protected concrete substrates under high-frequency and large temperature difference conditions.

Preparation of fish oil microcapsules for enhanced stability and controlled release via plug-and-play microfluidic chips

Peilan Xie,Zhenqian Tang,Ba Guan,Yimeng Tang,Qiyou Chen,Jiaying Ou,Kangmin Lin,Zhuo Jiang

Fish oil faces challenges like oxidation, low bioavailability, and poor sensory properties. While microencapsulation improves stability, traditional methods suffer from poor monodispersity, core damage, and limited wall material control. In this study, the plug-and-play microfluidic system overcame these limitations by precisely controlling emulsion formation and bypassing charge-matching requirements. Based on microfluidic technology, a plug-and-play microfluidic chip (single-channel and three-parallel channel) was used to control preparation (coefficient of variation < 5 %, shell thickness from 163 to 592 μm, core number from 1 to 5) and scaled-up production of fish oil microcapsules. A multi-dimensional wall material screening platform was developed via ionotropic crosslinking, using sodium alginate as the network skeleton and integrating gum arabic (GA) for emulsifying stability and low-methoxyl pectin (LM) for pH responsiveness. The results showed that the ternary composite wall material system (TCWMS) exhibited lower peroxide value (POV) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) values, and strong hydrogen bonding interactions. The multi-dimensional wall material screening platform and plug-and-play microfluidic chip were built to enable stable, controllable industrial preparation of monodisperse oily microcapsules.

Effect of different combinations of emulsifier and wall materials on physical properties of spray-dried microencapsulated swida wilsoniana oil

Xiaohua Yang,Shouhai Li,Jiujuan Yan,Jianling Xia,Lixin Huang,Mei Li,Haiyang Ding,Lina Xu

Spray drying was used to produce microencapsulated Wilson's dogwood ( Swida wilsoniana ) oil. The influences of the emulsifier and wall materials on the encapsulation were studied in order to produce high quality encapsulated S. wilsoniana oil. The emulsions were prepared by using lecithin (L) and Tween 80 (T) with different hydrophilic-lipophilic balance. Results indicated that the stable emulsion was obtained using T and L as the compound emulsifier at a ratio of 4/6 (w/w). By virtue of the compound emulsifier (T/L 4/6), the microencapsulation efficiency (MEE) reached 91%, and the oil loading up to 35% was achieved. We also examined the influence of the wall materials on the microencapsulation of S. wilsoniana oil. All the three wall materials exhibited high MEE (> 85%), and the highest MEE (95.20%) was obtained with sodium caseinate/lactose. All the S. wilsoniana oil encapsulated with the three wall materials exhibited nearly spherical microcapsules without pores or cracks, thus protecting the oil from oxygen.

Improved viability of probiotics by co-encapsulation of wheat germ oil under storage and gastrointestinal conditions: Effects of drying methods and wall composition

Bao-Lin He,Rui Cui,Teng-Gen Hu,Hong Wu

To improve the viability of probiotics during food storage and gastrointestinal digestion, this study developed solid microcapsules co-loaded with probiotics and wheat germ oil using W 1 /O/W 2 emulsion pre-encapsulation, followed by spray drying (SD), freeze drying (FD) and spray freeze drying (SFD), respectively. The effects of drying methods and wall materials on the microstructure, physicochemical properties, storage stability, and gastrointestinal tolerability were highlighted. Firstly, all samples showed high encapsulation efficiency for probiotics (86%–99.2%) and wheat germ oil (72%–85%), low moisture content (2.8%–5.3%) and hygroscopicity (6.3%–11.6%), and wall materials exhibited structural stability during the drying process. The results of viable cell counts indicated that SFD caused more damage to bacterial cells than the other two drying methods, as evidenced by the total death of encapsulated probiotics within 90 days. In contrast, SD and FD encapsulated probiotics remained at 8.8–9.9 log CFU/g after 150 days of storage at 4 °C and 25 °C. Furthermore, the viability of probiotics in the co-encapsulated and pectin-added microcapsules was significantly enhanced in storage stability and simulated gastrointestinal digestion tests. Based on the above results, it was suggested that the co-encapsulation strategy of combining the W 1 /O/W 2 structure and SD or FD to prepare microencapsulated powders can obtain probiotic products with high activity and high stability. Meanwhile, composite wall material (whey protein isolate and pectin) could enhance probiotics' protective effect and colonic targeted release behavior. In conclusion, the current research provides a valuable reference for the application of probiotics and functional oils in the food industry.
