Near-infrared responsive gecko-inspired flexible arm gripper

Xiaohang Luo,Xiaoxiao Dong,Hong Zhao,Travis Shihao Hu,Xiuping Lan,Lan Ding,Jiapeng Li,Huiqin Ni,Jordan A. Contreras,Hongbo Zeng,Quan Xu

Inspired by the microstructure of gecko toes, a drivable bionic gecko toe adhesion surface with double-layer structure was designed and fabricated. The driving ability is derived from the volume shrinkage of the dehydrated hydrogel after the driving hydrogel layer is irradiated by near-infrared light (808 nm) (the temperature of the single-layer hydrogel can be increased from 17.9 °C to 107 °C within 30s, and the curling angle can be curled by 0°–180°, similar to the folded state.), and another layer with a microstructure similar to gecko toes can withstand a maximum shear force of 22.4N/cm −2 . The different properties of the two layers are combined together to achieve a reversible transition of adhesion/desorption similar to the gecko walking process. The double-layer structure of the drivable bionic gecko toe adhesion surface was structurally optimized to prepare a four-arm gripper that could grasp/release only by unilateral irradiation. This bilayer-structured bionic gecko toe adhesion surface has great design potential, and in the future, it is hoped that it can provide insights into the preparation of large-actuated remote-controlled robots and fast-actuated soft robots .

Multi-Bioinspired mechanically responsive surface with high adhesion modulation ratios rapidly and efficiently switch adhesion to both solids and liquids

Hongyang Ma,Yuanyuan Xiang,Mengmeng Li,Haiyang Zhang,Xiaofeng Liu,Chao Wu,Shuqi Zhao,Xu Liu,Zhongjun Cheng,Yuyan Liu

Adhesives with switchable adhesion for both solids and liquids have become research frontier because of their broad application potential in fields such as biomedicine and soft grippers. However, these adhesives simultaneously achieving high adhesion modulation ratios for both solids and liquids remain challenge, because high surface free energy and large contact area make the adhesives lose the ability to control liquid adhesion. In this study, we integrated the adhesive concepts of the lotus leaf, gecko, and mesovelia to design a mechanically responsive adhesive surface (MRAS), which consists of a low adhesion background mesh (LABM) similar to lotus leaves and high adhesion pillar array that mimics geckos. Similar to the adhesion-regulating mechanism of mesovelia, this MRAS enables reversible adhesion switching by mechanically controlling the protrusion/retraction of pillars on the LABM. The MRAS can regulate adhesion force by altering the surface chemistry of pillars and the contact state between the pillars and solids/liquids. The MRAS can achieve high adhesion modulation ratios of 260 for solids and 105 for liquids, and can switch adhesion rapidly (less than 1 s) and efficiently. These capabilities allow the MRAS to manipulate various solids and liquids. Additionally, it enables the programmable control of solids and liquids. This research could provide new strategies for applying switchable adhesive surfaces in various fields.

Multi-branched cage molecules synergistically physically and chemically crosslink transparent, robust, and reusable adhesive by mimicking gecko setae

Boran Hao,Yimin Luo,Wenjun Chan,Yujie Yang,Shushen Lyu,Zhuangzhu Luo

The protection of marine equipment against complex media environments encounters multifaceted coupling factors, posing significant challenges to achieving durable environmental resistance and robust interfacial adhesion for critical applications such as submarine optical components, cross-sea bridges, and deep-sea operational devices. In this work, inspired by the gecko setae structure, based on the multi-branched molecular structure design characteristics of cage-like structures (n = 1, 2, 3) in synergy with the special zigzag hydrogen bond arrays of thiourea/urea, three types of tough adhesives with high transparency, mechanically robust interfacial adhesion, self-healing, and the ability to maintain strength for reusability are controllably fabricated. The unique molecular design of the multi-branched cage-like structures is effectively integrated through physical/chemical crosslinking actions with high-density quintuple hydrogen bond arrays of supramolecular polyurethane, showcasing strong adhesive strength (22.45 MPa; 406 % enhancement). Interestingly, the synergy between the initial interfacial wet adhesion work dominated by interfacial tension and the energy change terms (enthalpy change) brought by the physical/chemical properties of cleverly designed adhesives controlling viscous forces during curing is demonstrated through observations of dynamic wetting behavior of adhesive melts, innovatively establishing the evolutionary laws of adhesive spatial network structures and interfacial adhesion mechanisms. Additionally, the adhesive’s resistance to high and low temperatures and marine conditions is simulated for bridge pier protection, offering technical support for enhancing the protection of marine engineering components.

Gecko-inspired ultrasensitive multifunctional mechano-optical smart membranes

Yang Liu,Shaoxin Song,Meng Liu,Yue Hu,Lu-wen Zhang,Hyunsik Yoon,Lili Yang,Dengteng Ge

Mechano-optical materials are of great importance in smart window, security, display and camouflages. However, fabricating ultrasensitive optical devices with wide range still remains great challenging. Inspired from the fast tail amputation of gecko utilizing weak non-ossificated septum, herein, we report an ultrasensitive mechano-optical membrane based on weak dye layer between silica nanoparticles and soft polydimethylsiloxane matrix. Owing to the light scattering from dye-induced internal cavitation, the transmittance dramatically decreases by ~44% at initial small strain level (15%) and a high sensitivity ( S  > 2) is kept within an abroad strain range (0~35%). Moreover, a high total transmittance tuning range of ~75% is exhibited. Simulation and experimental monitoring demonstrate the effective weakening of interface energy. The potential applications in smart window, sensor, anti-counterfeiting also exhibit the multifunctionality of our smart membranes. This facile and low-cost approach enables the large-scale production and applications of mechano-optical membranes and this interface design provides a general way to develop ultrasensitive mechano-responsive materials.

Sculpting Bio-Inspired Surface Textures: An Adhesive Janus Periosteum

Yuhe Yang,Tianpeng Xu,Ho Pan Bei,Yuanjin Zhao,Xin Zhao

Existing artificial periostea faces difficulty in supporting the entire bone repair cycle due to the absence of adhesion-centric design and effective cell manipulation, leading to poor inhibition of soft tissue infiltration and induction of osteogenesis and angiogenesis. Here, a Janus periosteum with interior surface adhesion and exterior anatomical patterns to mimic the structure and function of natural periosteum is presented. Photo-crosslinkable polymers are employed to replicate the exterior anisotropic surface structured microgrooves for cell fate manipulation and assemble gecko-inspired fibrillar setae arrays for interior surface adhesion. To further bolster its underwater adhesiveness, mussel-inspired poly (dopamine methacrylamide-co-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PDMH) is coated onto the periosteum surfaces. This periosteum presents adhesiveness with strong shear and normal adhesion in both dry and wet conditions due to the coordinated interactions of micro setae arrays and PDMH coating; it also boasts effective cell modulation for enhanced synchronous osteogenesis and angiogenesis, without the aid of growth factors. Moreover, the Janus periosteum is found to enhance bone regeneration in vivo with increased new bone formation and neovascularization. It is envisioned that this Janus periosteum will be able to streamline bone fracture surgical repair as a rapidly adhesive, low-maintenance yet robust bandage to significantly cut down the healing phase.

Bio-Inspired Hybrid Laser Direct Writing of Interfacial Adhesion for Universal Functional Coatings

Zimo Cai,Chuyang Miao,Chonghao Zhang,Huayu Luo,Jiangen Wu,Tianzhen Zhao,Huan Yang,Lisha Fan,Geng Yang,Xiaoping Ouyang,Huayong Yang,Jianhua Yao,Kaichen Xu

Enhancing interfacial adhesion between functional coatings and target surfaces facilitates long-term stable service by mitigating interferences of mechanical mismatches. Design of mechanical interlocks affords an effective strategy to strengthen the interfacial bonding with durability and compatibility, but the in-depth investigations are still lacked. Herein, a gecko-inspired hierarchical strategy realized by hybrid laser direct writing is proposed, which incorporates an armored frame scale for surface protection and a riveted anchor scale for interlocks. Such dual-scale configurations endow the functional coatings with the stronger adhesion to the targets than the pristine and mono-scale cases, resulting in 2 orders of magnitude enhancement resistant to tape peeling tests. Utilizing this scheme, a laser-induced integrated deicing system is in situ manufactured on thermoplastics, primarily comprising superhydrophobic structures, carbon-based sensors as well as adhesive copper (Cu) interconnects and heaters, where Cu-based devices exhibit superior resistance to water impacts and stress fatigue. Interfacing with signal processing modules, such an all-in-one system demonstrates real-time temperature monitoring and high efficiency in deicing (4.24 folds faster than the control group). The facile route for intensified adhesion holds promise in the interfaces within advanced equipment and under harsh scenarios.
