The sustainable development of human society is driving an increasing demand for environmentally friendly materials that exhibit both acoustic absorption and efficient heat transfer control. To date, a limited number of aerogels with adjustable thermal properties have been reported, and these are primarily composed of synthetic polymers or fibers. In this study, bio-based crosslinked polyacrylonitrile/ β -oligomers (PAN/P- β -CD) nanofibrous aerogel (CPNA) were prepared through directional freeze-drying and thermal treatment. The resulting aerogels demonstrate excellent elasticity, including remarkable compressive cycle durability, retaining 87.5% strength after 100 cycles, and stable elasticity over a wide temperature range (-20 ∼ 180 °C). These exceptional mechanical properties confer thermal management capabilities to CPNA aerogels. The CPNA aerogels exhibit dynamic thermal conductivity under varying compressive strain, with thermal conductivity values as low as 22.9 mW/mK. Due to their well-designed hierarchical porous structure and unique nano-sized cavities of cyclodextrin, CPNA aerogels display broadband sound absorption performance, achieving a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) value of 0.67. Furthermore, the bio-based CPNA aerogels degraded in alkaline solutions. This work expands the applications of bio-aerogels in some environments that require materials with excellent sound absorption and adjustable thermal management properties.

Ultrafine fibrous porous materials obtained by electrospinning technology have broad application prospects in the field of noise reduction. However, the two-dimensional fibrous membranes faced low thickness and dense structure, resulting in a single internal structure and narrow sound absorption band. Here, we report a simple and robust strategy to prepare gradient structured fiber sponges with superelasticity and stretchability by combining humidity-assisted multi-step electrospinning and a unique physical/chemical dual cross-linking method. The prepared gradient structured fibrous sponge has a maximum tensile strength of 169 kPa and can lift a weight 10,000 times its weight without breaking. Besides, the material can still maintain a stable structure after 500 compression cycles at 60% strain. Meantime, the material has lightweight properties (density of 13.8 mg cm −3 ) and hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 152°). More importantly, the gradient change of porosity and pore diameter in the Z direction endowed the fibrous sponge material with high-efficiency absorption of broadband sound waves (with a noise reduction coefficient up to 0.53). The design of this gradient structured fiber sponge opens a new way for the development of ideal sound-absorbing materials.

Silica-based aerogels are widely regarded as promising sound-absorbing materials due to their low density and high specific surface area. However, their hard surface and small pores hinder sound wave penetration, resulting in a relatively poor sound absorption performance. To overcome this limitation, our study employs melamine foam (MF) as a scaffold to construct a gradient aerogel composite acoustic absorber. This innovative design significantly leads to a low average density (31.3–117.4 mg/cm3) and large density gradient up to 13.7 mg/cm4 (approximately 2.7 times difference compared with the lowest density), and its sound absorption properties are greatly improved, achieving an average absorption coefficient of 87% over the entire frequency band and 95% above 2000 Hz for 30 mm samples. In addition, the best noise reduction coefficient can reach 0.59. For demonstration, simulations further reveal the role of the pore size in enhancing sound absorption. The large pores in the foam skeleton facilitate the coupling of sound waves into the structure, while the small pores in the aerogel effectively block sound wave transmission, providing additional pathways for acoustic energy dissipation. Moreover, the incorporation of aerogel significantly enhances the foam’s mechanical properties. In terms of thermal insulation, the presence of aerogel markedly improves the foam’s insulating performance. This gradient design not only expands the potential applications of aerogels in sound absorption and thermal insulation but also provides a novel approach for the development of advanced acoustic materials.

As promising candidates for widespread application, advanced ceramic fiber mats with robust mechanical properties are urgently needed. However, the brittleness, fatigue failure, and large density of ceramic fiber pose significant obstacles to its practical application. Herein, a novel SiO 2 aerogel/ZrO 2 composite nanofibrous membrane (SZCNFM) with excellent flexibility was prepared by introducing SiO 2 aerogel nanoparticles into ZrO 2 nanofiber via simple co-electrospinning. The developed tetragonal zirconia phase without changing up to 1200°C endows SZCNFM material with excellent thermal stability. Furthermore, the as-prepared membranes exhibit fatigue resistance ability which can maintain 98% of the original stress after 100 buckling cycle tests. The addition of mesoporous structure aerogel reduces the heat transfer of the nanofibrous membrane, giving its low thermal conductivity (30 mW/m/K) and low-frequency sound absorption (noise reduction coefficient of 0.52). Combined with the high-temperature resistance, low thermal conductivity and excellent sound-absorption ability make it a promising material for heat insulation and acoustic absorption.

A sound absorption perlite brick coated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/perlite slurry was prepared by two kinds of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) methods (one-step method and two step method) to develop an efficient sound absorption composite material in full frequency. The characterization results indicated that CNTs delivered by two-step method are denser and purer than that delivered by one-step method. Moreover, the grain sizes played an important role in the acoustic performance of sound absorption perlite brick. The average sound absorption coefficient of sound absorption perlite bricks decreased steadily and significantly with incremental grain size. In addition, the effects of CNTs on the acoustic performance of the materials were explored. The results showed that the sound absorption coefficients of the bricks coated with CNTs/perlite slurry were all over 0.7 when the frequency was above 500 Hz, and the highest value reached 0.96, indicating a positive influence of the CNTs coatings.

Industrial and traffic noise has become increasingly serious with the progress of industrialization. Most existing noise-absorbing materials suffer from poor heat dissipation and insufficient low-frequency (<1000 Hz) noise absorption, which not only reduces working efficiency but also leads to safety risks. Herein, heat-conducting elastic ultrafine fiber sponges with boron nitride (BN) networks were prepared by integrating direct electrospinning and impregnation method. The large acoustic contact area of ultrafine fibers and the vibration effect of BN nanosheets in a three-dimensional direction endow fiber sponges with good noise reduction, which can reduce white noise by 28.3 dB with a high noise reduction coefficient of 0.64. Moreover, thanks to good heat-conducting networks composed of BN nanosheets and porous structures, the obtained sponges exhibit superior heat dissipation with thermal conductivity of 0.159 W m −1 K −1 . Besides, the introduction of elastic polyurethane and following crosslinking endow the sponges with good mechanical properties, which have almost no plastic deformation after 1000 compressions, and the tensile strength and strain are as high as 0.28 MPa and 75%. The successful synthesis of heat-conducting elastic ultrafine fiber sponges overcomes poor heat dissipation and low-frequency noise reduction of noise absorbers.

Under the condition of constant thickness, improving the low-frequency sound absorption performance of conventional sound-absorbing materials is a challenging research topic. To address this issue, a new reduced graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol (RGO/PVA) porous composite ceramic was fabricated using freeze-drying and optimized by redesigning the internal connecting pores of porous ceramic matrixes with a reticular microstructure using RGO and PVA. The as-prepared porous structure showed significant enhancement in the low-frequency sound absorption band compared with pristine porous ceramics. In addition, the hybrid porous ceramics exhibited low thermal conductivity. These favorable properties indicate that the hybrid sound-absorbing ceramics have potential application prospects for noise reduction in the fields of construction and electrical and mechanical devices.

Natural fiber-based sound-absorbing materials have received more and more attention due to the increasingly severe noise pollution. However, the current natural fibers’ sound-absorbing materials often have poor flame-retardant performance and degradability, which limits their further application. In this study, flame-retardant cellulose fiber (FRCF) was prepared by modifying softwood fiber, and a kind of fiber-based sound-absorbing material, natural fiber-based sound-absorbing composite (NFSC), was prepared by replacing glass fiber with FRCF. The results show that the synthesis of FRCF is successful, and the functional groups containing phosphorus and nitrogen introduced into the cellulose side chain can significantly improve the thermal stability of softwood fiber. FRCF is able to bestow initial flame-retardant capability on the NFSC, allowing NFSC to get the V-1 level in vertical burning test with fewer flame retardants, and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of NFSC can reach 28.5 %. The NFSC with FRCF instead of glass fiber also has better sound absorption performance; its maximum sound absorption coefficient reaches 0.90, and its noise reduction coefficient (NRC) reaches 0.45. This work is expected to provide inspiration for the design and preparation of environmentally friendly natural fiber-based sound-absorbing materials.

The rapid development of underwater vehicles has posed the pressing and urgent requirement for smart underwater skin. Developing the multi-function underwater skin for sound detection and absorption is of significance for environment investigation and stable operation of underwater vehicles. Herein, a novel underwater acoustic skin with dual functions of sensitive sound detection and effective sound absorption under high hydrostatic pressure was reported. With addition of piezoelectric multiple yolk–shell particles and carbon nanotube network, the smart skin exhibited excellent sound absorption performance and enhanced mechanical property, which retained a high sound coefficient under pressure of 3 MPa compared to the resin skin. The enhanced skin with piezoelectric particles also exhibited sensitive sound detection capability with admirable directivity. The results proved the broad application prospect of the acoustic skin based on piezoelectric multiple yolk–shell particles and conductive network in the underwater extreme environment.

Lignin is a sustainable biomass resource with abundant hydroxyl groups that holds great promise for use as a feedstock for polyurethane foam production. Therefore, the flexible polyurethane foams (FPUFs) were prepared using the oxidized alkali lignin (OAL) as the matrix to enhance its compatibility. The OAL was obtained under the following conditions of 60 °C, 80 min treatment, a ratio of hydrogen peroxide to lignin of 1.2:1, and a ratio of iron hydroxide to lignin of 0.01. It was demonstrated that incorporating OAL enhanced the density, compressive strength, sound-absorbing performance and degradability of foam composites. The compressive strength was also improved by more than five times than that of blank foam under the optimal conditions, reaching 0.11 MPa. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the foam composite containing 30 % modified lignin content exhibited the highest thermal stability. The results of solvent resistance testing demonstrated the durability of the foam composites in both water and solvents. Lignin-modified polyurethane foam exhibited an acoustic absorption coefficient above 0.2 across a wide frequency range, with the highest value reaching 0.84, meeting the conventional requirements for sound absorption materials (α > 0.2). The results suggested that this environmentally friendly preparation method was feasible for producing high-performance polyurethane foams, which was appropriate for the production of sound absorption boards for industry, transportation by train and automobile.

The low melt strength of degradable polymers makes the preparation and pore structure manipulation of degradable porous polymers challenging, limiting their widespread utilization. Herein, we report the adoption of a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating method to prepare degradable polymer porous materials with distinct characteristics, such as high porosity, a multiscale porous structure, and degradability. The prepolymer employed as the continuous phase was prepared by grafting degradable polycaprolactone onto 2-ethyloctyl acrylate. Subsequently, the viscosity of the oil phase and the density difference and interfacial tension between the oil and water phases were adjusted via the type and concentration of the diluting solvent. The porosity, pore structure, and degree of pore interconnectivity in the polymerized HIPE were adjusted by considering the physicochemical properties of the diluent and their influence on the oil–water partition at the HIPE interface. Additionally, the mechanisms underlying cavity and window formation in the prepared degradable polymer porous materials were explored. The prepared materials exhibited good sound absorption performance in the frequency range of 3000–4000 Hz, excellent organic solvent absorption capacity, and underwent rapid hydrolysis, with a mass loss of approximately 30% within the first 3 days, which escalated to approximately 80% within 1 month. The study findings provide a valuable reference for the preparation and structural regulation of degradable polymer porous materials, thereby fostering their future applications.

Underwater sound absorption coatings capable of absorbing sound energy is essential to conceal underwater vehicles. While the accumulation of marine fouling on surfaces of ship hulls , platforms, and submarines can significantly alter their acoustic properties . Currently, the precise impact that different stages of marine fouling have on underwater sound absorption coatings remains unclear. In this study, a novel lab assessment method was developed to investigate the acoustic effect of marine fouling on the underwater sound absorption coatings. Four distinct stages of marine fouling were artificial fabricated and characterized, including conditioning film, microfouling, medium macrofouling, and heavy macrofouling. These effects are quantified through comprehensive tests conducted in a water-filled impedance tube . It is found that the first two stages of marine fouling have a negligible impact on the underwater sound absorption performance within the low frequency range of 500 Hz and 2000 Hz. While a limited impact is observed in the frequency range of 2000 Hz–5000 Hz, where the sound absorption coefficient remains approximately 0.6. Conversely, in the third and fourth stages of fouling, the average sound absorption coefficient drops from 0.8 to 0.2. Further, a new acoustic finite element method (FEM) model of hard fouling was developed to predict the acoustic effect, and the numerical results show the same trend with the experimental results. These findings emphasize the importance of considering antifouling strategies during the design of underwater sound absorption coatings, with a particular focus on targeting hard fouling organisms as the primary objective.
