Droplets banding characteristics of water-in-oil emulsion under ultrasonic standing waves

Xiaoming Luo,Juhang Cao,Haoran Yin,Haipeng Yan,Limin He

Droplets banding is critical to emulsion separation under ultrasonic irradiation as it can greatly improve the separation efficiency. In this paper, the formation process of droplets banding under ultrasonic standing waves was precisely captured by high-speed microscopic photography; by processing the images, the droplets banding characteristics, including the banding formation time and banding interval, were extracted. Then the effects of acoustic intensity, frequency, droplet size, and physical properties of oil and water on the droplets banding characteristics were discussed in details. The results show that the range of acoustic intensities, within which the droplets banding can form, increases with the increase of the frequency; a maximum allowable acoustic intensity exists for banding formation, which also increases with the frequency. The banding formation time, which increases with increasing oil viscosity but decreases with droplet size, is found to be hardly affected by the oil-water interfacial tension. In addition, the banding interval is only related to the frequency, which closely corresponds to the half wavelength.

An experimental study on the coalescence process of binary droplets in oil under ultrasonic standing waves

Xiaoming Luo,Juhang Cao,Limin He,Hongping Wang,Haipeng Yan,Yahua Qin

The coalescence process of binary droplets in oil under ultrasonic standing waves was investigated with high-speed photography. Three motion models of binary droplets in coalescence process were illustrated: (1) slight translational oscillation; (2) sinusoidal translational oscillation; (3) migration along with acoustic streaming. To reveal the droplets coalescence mechanisms, the influence of main factors (such as acoustic intensity, droplet size, viscosity and interfacial tension, etc) on the motion and coalescence of binary droplets was studied under ultrasonic standing waves. Results indicate that the shortest coalescence time is achieved when binary droplets show sinusoidal translational oscillation. The corresponding acoustic intensity in this case is the optimum acoustic intensity. Under the optimum acoustic intensity, drop size decrease will bring about coalescence time decrease by enhancing the binary droplets oscillation. Moreover, there is an optimum interfacial tension to achieve the shortest coalescence time.

Ultrasonic Enhanced Sodium Sulfide Removal of Arsenic from Zinc Sulfate Solution

Qi Zhang,Yingjie Xu,Hongying Xia,Chenwei Hu,Shixiong Peng,Qifei Pei,Libo Zhang

The ZnSO 4 solution leached from zinc oxide dust requires arsenic removal prior to electrolysis. Traditional lime-ferric salt methods face issues like long reaction times, large As residue, and low efficiency. This study proposes an ultrasound enhanced sodium sulfide process for efficient and rapid As removal. The influence of factors such as S/As molar ratio, pH, temperature, reaction time, and ultrasonic intensity on As removal efficiency was evaluated. Results identified the S/As ratio and pH as the most influential parameters. When the pH of zinc sulfate solution is greater than 1, zinc will enter the residue more with the increase of pH, resulting in increased zinc loss. Under optimized conditions, As removal reached 99.39%. Compared to the lime-ferric salt method, the sulfidation process reduced As-bearing residue by 73.72% and shortened the reaction time by 90%. The enhancement is attributed to ultrasonic cavitation and associated mechanical effects. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM-EDS) analyses confirmed that the ultrasound irradiation improves sodium sulfide's As removal. Kinetic studies show that the process under ultrasonic enhancement follows internal diffusion and chemical reaction mixing control, whereas conventional conditions follow internal diffusion control. Ultrasonic enhancement reduces activation energy from 14.48 to 9.16   kJ/mol, lowering the reaction barrier and improving efficiency. The results demonstrate that ultrasound-assisted sodium sulfide treatment is a highly effective alternative for arsenic removal from ZnSO 4 solutions.

Preparation of aspirin inhalable powder by ultrasound-intensified anti-solvent crystallization for pulmonary drug delivery

Yan Zhao,Kai Feng,Boxin Liu,Zhihao Zhang,Haozhou Huang,Mateng Chen,Qingzhen Zhang,Gang Yang,Mengxing Lin,Yulong Zhang,Hanhan Li,Ning Xue,Kaiqi Shi,Qiang Da,Bin Dong

Aspirin is an antiplatelet agglutinating drug used clinically for the prevention and treatment of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and cerebral thrombosis. In this study, aspirin inhalable powder was prepared by ultrasound-intensified anti-solvent crystallization (UIAC) and developed for rapid antiplatelet aggregation, which could reduce the dose and gastrointestinal irritation. The particle size distribution, morphology, density, fluidity, and in vitro aerodynamic performance of the as-prepared powders were systematically evaluated. Meanwhile, machine learning methodology, specifically utilizing the Decision Tree Regressor in conjunction with Shapley Value analysis, was applied to elucidate the influence of critical process parameters within the production process. The powder flowability could be improved by the addition of excipients L150 and L-leucine (Leu). The value of fine particle fraction (FPF) increased from 10.40 % to 45.86 % when adding L150 (60 %, w/w) and Leu (5 %, w/w). The cytotoxicity study of aspirin inhalable powder was performed at cellular level, and demonstrated aspirin powder had no significant toxic effect. The Calu-3 cell monolayer interfaced to simulate lung epithelial tissue, demonstrated the high permeability of inhalable powder in lung. Pharmacokinetics were investigated in healthy rats, compared with oral administration, the T max of inhale administration (10 min) was significantly shorter than oral administration (30 min), and the AUC was 1.91 times higher than that of the oral administration, demonstrating that pulmonary drug delivery accelerated the absorption and increased the bioavailability of aspirin.

Research on mechanism and characteristics of oil recovery from oily sludge in ultrasonic fields

Xiaoming Luo,Haiyang Gong,Ziling He,Peng Zhang,Limin He

The acoustic parameters and operating conditions that determine efficiency of oil recovery from oily sludge are studied. Based on this, the mechanism of ultrasonic disintegration of oily sludge is analyzed. The results show that lower frequency ultrasound results in larger and more energetic cavitation bubbles that are more effective in the desorption of oil from solid particles. Moreover, acoustic intensity and treatment time that correspond to maximal oil recovery are found. Increasing the ratio of water to sludge and pH can reduce the slurry viscosity and facilitate the formation of HSiO 3 − , respectively, which improves the oil recovery efficiency. Moreover, Triton X-100 has better oil solubilizing effects than SDBS. After ultrasonic treatment, small amounts of asphaltenes are more stable on solid particles than other components. The heteroatoms such as S, N, and O in asphaltenes form hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups on the surface of the particles, impeding the desorption of oil. Mechanical effects such as shock waves and micro jets due to acoustic cavitation can break the hydrogen bonds between asphaltenes and solid particles, thereby facilitating oil recovery from oily sludge.
