Detecting trace of mercury ions in water using photoacoustic method enhanced by gold nanospheres

Qiaozhi He,Qian Zhang,Wenwu Cao,Ting Yin,Siwei Zhao,Xiaoqia Yin,Hui Zhao,Wei Tao

A gold nanospheres (Au NSs)-enhanced photoacoustic (PA) system has been developed to detect parts per trillion (ppt)-level mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) in aqueous environments, which combines the advantages of the high sensitivity of PA detection and high extinction coefficient of Au NSs. 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA) is used as the aggregation agent to detect Hg 2+ by a designed PA system. Experimental results demonstrate a linear relationship between the amplitude of PA signals and logarithmic concentration of Hg 2+ in the range of 10 pM-1 μM (R=0.994). The detection limit of this Au NSs-enhanced PA system is 78 pM (16 ppt, S/N=3) with a quick response time of 1 min. This method has excellent selectivity for Hg 2+ over other heavy metal ions , alkali, and alkaline earth metal ions . The system is cost-effective and shows a great potential for quick detection of Hg 2+ trace in water with very high sensitivity.

Five-Cavity Resonance Inspired, rGO Nano-Sheet Reinforced, Multi-Site Voice Synergetic Detection Hydrogel Sensors with Diverse Self-Adhesion and Robust Wireless Transmissibility

Yue Wu,Kewei Zhao,Jingliu Wang,Chunhui Li,Xubao Jiang,Yudong Wang,Xiangling Gu

The practical application of flexible sensors in sound detection is significantly hindered by challenges such as information isolation, fragmentation, and low fidelity. To address these challenges, this work developed a composite hydrogel via a one-pot method, employing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the first network, polyacrylic acid (PAA) as the second network, and two-dimensional nanomaterials—reduced graphene oxide (rGO)—generated through the redox reaction of polydopamine (PDA) and graphene oxide (GO) as conductive fillers. The uniformly distributed rGO within the hydrogel forms an efficient conductive network, endowing the material with high sensitivity (GF = 0.64), excellent conductivity (8.15 S m−1), rapid response time (350 ms), and outstanding stability. The synergistic interaction between PDA and PAA modulates the hydrogel’s adhesion (0.89 kPa), enabling conformal attachment to skin surfaces. The designed rGO@PVA-PAA hydrogel-based flexible sensor effectively monitors vibrations across diverse frequencies originating from five vocal cavities (head, nasal, oral, laryngeal, and thoracic cavities) during singing. Integrated with multi-position synchronization and Bluetooth wireless sensing technologies, the system achieves coordinated and efficient monitoring of multiple vocal cavities. Furthermore, the hydrogel sensor demonstrates versatility in detecting physiological signals, including electrocardiograms, subtle vibrations, and multi-scale body movements, highlighting its broad applicability in biomedical and motion-sensing applications.

Smart skin of underwater vehicle with dual functions of sound detection and absorption

Jiaqi Zheng,Hao Luo,Jiawei Du,Shuang Sun,Qikuan Cheng,Lu Zhang,Dong Wang,Yunming Wang,Huamin Zhou

The rapid development of underwater vehicles has posed the pressing and urgent requirement for smart underwater skin. Developing the multi-function underwater skin for sound detection and absorption is of significance for environment investigation and stable operation of underwater vehicles. Herein, a novel underwater acoustic skin with dual functions of sensitive sound detection and effective sound absorption under high hydrostatic pressure was reported. With addition of piezoelectric multiple yolk–shell particles and carbon nanotube network, the smart skin exhibited excellent sound absorption performance and enhanced mechanical property, which retained a high sound coefficient under pressure of 3 MPa compared to the resin skin. The enhanced skin with piezoelectric particles also exhibited sensitive sound detection capability with admirable directivity. The results proved the broad application prospect of the acoustic skin based on piezoelectric multiple yolk–shell particles and conductive network in the underwater extreme environment.

Molecular Ferroelectrics for Highly Sensitive Detection Toward Low-Frequency Sound Recognition

Ruonan Wang,Lutao Li,Jiating Li,Chen Wang,Shan Cong,Guoxiang Zhao,Xinyu Du,Chao-Ran Huang,Hengyu Cao,Weiyu Cheng,Yaqi Ye,Chengyuan Liu,Bin Li,Wei-Qiang Liao,Zheng Lu,Rujun Tang,Ren-Gen Xiong,Guifu Zou

Human hearing cannot sensitively detect sounds below 100 Hz, which can affect the physical well-being and lead to dizziness, headaches, and nausea. Piezoelectric acoustic sensors still lack sensitivity to low-frequency sounds owing to the low piezoelectric coefficient or high elastic modulus of materials. The low elastic modulus and substantial piezoelectric coefficient of molecular ferroelectric materials make them excellent candidates for acoustic sensors. In this study, the molecular ferroelectric, [(CH 3 ) 3 NCH 2 Cl]CdCl 3 , is used as a piezoelectric active layer in the construction of a piezoelectric acoustic sensor for low-frequency sound detection. The sensor exhibits high sensitivity (47.43 mV Pa −1 cm −2 ) at 87 Hz, with an excellent level of frequency resolution (up to 0.1 Hz). This facilitates the accurate discrimination and detection of low-frequency sounds, which is suitable for noise detection applications. The sensor differentiates between various musical instruments and heartbeats, and recognizes audio signals. This study highlights the potential of molecular ferroelectric materials in piezoelectric acoustic device applications, including noise detection, health monitoring, and human-computer interactions.
