Acoustic streaming enabled by a Lamb wave resonator (LWR) is efficient for particle trapping and enrichment in microfluidic channels. However, because Lamb waves combine the features of bulk acoustic waves and surface acoustic waves, the resulting acoustic streaming in the LWR occurs in multiple planes, and the particle flow behavior in this acoustofluidic system is largely unknown. Reported here are numerical simulations and laboratory experiments conducted to investigate the boundary conditions for particle motion inside a microvortex induced by an LWR. Upon dynamic capture, the particles’ trajectories become orbital paths within an acoustic vortex. The suspended particles encounter two distinct acoustic phenomena, i.e., the drag force resulting from acoustic streaming and the acoustic radiation force, which exert forces in various directions on the particles. When the acoustic radiation force and the fluid drag force are dominant for large and small particles in a mixed solution, respectively, the large particles reside within the vortex while the small particles remain at its periphery. Conversely, when the acoustic radiation force is dominant for both types of particles, the distribution pattern is reversed. HIGHLIGHTS A Lamb wave resonator (LWR) was fabricated and used for particle manipulation, and upon analyzing the forces acting on the particles, two distinct distribution patterns are found. Particles in the acoustic streaming are dominated by different forces depending on their size and the frequency of the LWR. An LWR with a frequency of 370 MHz was used, and this frequency induces a potent acoustic flow in the LWR that is suitable for particle manipulation.

The accurate and efficient manipulation of particles and droplets is crucial for the fields of disease diagnosis, target drug delivery, and sample purification, specific microstructure-based particle and droplet manipulation have been widely utilized in bioassays. However, current techniques are mainly based on the fixed microstructures, which is extremely difficult to achieve dynamic modulation by adjusting microstructure morphology and excitation conditions. Herein, we present a novel particle capture and droplet manipulation methodology by using morphologically reconfigurable magnetic micropillar arrays incorporate with acoustic streaming effects, which enables reconfigurable particle capturing, cargo transportation, and droplet manipulation. The mechanism is to assemble NdFeB magnetic powders by magnetic gradient fields to form morphologically variable magnetic micropillar arrays with porous surfaces, and the localized acoustic streaming effects generated by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) enable micropillar arrays to capture nearby particles onto the surfaces or to drive perturbations in droplets in the vicinity. To demonstrate the capabilities of this technology, we have achieved the high-volume acoustofluidic particle capture and loading (0.214 MCF), targeted complex maze navigation, efficient droplets manipulation (≤ 3.96 mm/s), and acoustofluidic mixing acceleration (≤ 2.5 s). Therefore, this technique enables reconfigurable and versatile manipulation of particles and droplets in biomedical applications.

Liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) has emerged as a promising method for the industrial-scale production of graphene. However, one of its critical steps, namely sonication, has faced challenges due to high power consumption and low efficiency, leading to limited applicability in industrial settings. This study introduces a novel, cost-effective microfluidic sonication device designed to significantly reduce power consumption while efficiently assisting the LPE process for graphene production. By coupling a capillary with a buzzer and applying an appropriate electric signal, simulation and particle tracing experiments reveal the generation of robust shear forces resulting from acoustic streaming and cavitation when the capillary end is immersed in the liquid. For the first time, the capillary-based sonication device was effectively utilized for graphene exfoliation in a DMF (N,N-Dimethylformamide) + NaOH liquid phase system. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and Raman characterization results corroborate the successful exfoliation of 100 nm with thicknesses below 10 nm graphene sheets from graphite flakes using this pioneering device. The values ofI2D/IGincrease after processing, which suggests the exfoliation of graphite flakes into thinner graphene sheets. The vibration-based acoustofluidic effector represents a versatile and scalable miniature device, capable of being employed individually for small-batch production, thereby optimizing the utilization of raw 2D materials, particularly in experimental scenarios. Alternatively, it holds the potential for large-scale manufacturing through extensive parallelization, offering distinct advantages in terms of cost-efficiency and minimal power consumption. Keywords:liquid phase exfoliation;graphene;capillary sonication;acoustic streaming;cavitation

Manipulating objects with acoustics has been developed for hundreds of years since Chladni patterns in gaseous environments were exhibited. In recent decades, acoustic manipulation in microfluidics, known as acoustofluidics, has rapidly thrived and many sophisticated technologies were born. However, the basic background motion of particles under acoustic excitation is usually neglected and the classical Chladni patterns haven't been reproduced in an aqueous environment. In this study, we investigated the basic mechanism and the motion of suspended particles and sinking particles in a plain microchamber under low-frequency excitation (3–5 kHz). The mechanisms were clearly distinguished by comparing the differences among colored fluids, suspended particles, and sinking particles. The suspended particles rotated around the antinode with a speed up to 55.1 μm s−1 at 100 Vpp by the acoustic streaming and they approached each other by the secondary acoustic radiation force. The sinking particles concentrated at the node with a speed up to 22.3 μm s−1 at 100 Vpp by bouncing on the vibrating surface and the primary acoustic radiation force. We have reproduced the classical standard/inverse Chladni patterns in an aqueous environment for the first time, and they were leveraged to separate SiO2 particles with different sizes. The big particles with an average diameter of 9.68 μm were concentrated at the node while the small particles with an average diameter of 2.72 μm were collected at the antinode within 2 min. These results not only provide insightful perspectives of basic mechanisms, but also open up new possibilities for advanced acoustic tweezers.

Currently, researches on nanomaterials have been restricted by slow and multistep synthesis procedures. Herein, we demonstrate an ultrafast, one step method of purification and delivery of quantum dots into living cells, actuated by the acoustic streaming (AS) produced through a gigahertz resonator. Results demonstrate that the impurities in the carbon dots (CDs) can be extracted immediately aided by the acoustic forcing, with extra high purification efficiency of 93%. The system can also efficiently deliver the CDs into cells, showing excellent nucleus and mitochondria uptake under 3 min of AS treatment, and making the organelles of cells to be recorded more easily and simultaneously. More importantly, the AS is found to further accelerate the bioreaction inside the cells, thus realizes the enhanced biosensing of Fe 3+ in single living cells. This work develops a novel type of multifunctional method for effective purification, intracellular delivery and biosensing of nanomaterials, inspiring the biological/medical nanotechnology researches at subcellular level.

Acoustofluidics that combines acoustics with microfluidics represents an emerging and promising technology for the efficient mixing of fluids and synthesis of functional nanomaterials. However, it remains a great challenge to the controllable synthesis of three-dimensional functional nanostructures in a confined space. Herein, we introduce a robust acoustofluidic bubble-driven micromixer for the controllable synthesis of functional nanoarray inside the glass capillary toward efficient photodegradation and metal ion enrichment. The acoustofluidic micromixer functions with microbubbles-induced acoustic streaming from arrow-patterned microchannels. The morphology, density, and size of ZnO nanorods and nanosheets array can be precisely adjusted by reactant type, seeding phase, and reaction time. ZnO nanorod array exhibits approximately 90% degradation efficiency of R6G even after ten cycles, which are significantly better than ZnO nanosheet array and blank control groups. Enrichment tests of heavy metal ions show that ZnO nanoarray performs better enrichment performance of Cu 2+ than that of Ag + . In addition, both photodegradation and enrichment capabilities can be well regulated by tuning the flow rates (i.e., the residence time). These findings provide important guidelines for the rational design of functional nanomaterials and shed new light on the fabrication of advanced lab-on-a-chip devices.

Ultrasound-actuated microrobots that incorporate entrapped microbubbles rely on acoustic streaming thrust for propulsion. While bubble size and resonance have been extensively studied, the role of opening size remains less understood. In this study, we numerically investigate how the opening size affects both streaming flow and the resulting thrust. Finite element analysis (FEA) reveals that although streaming velocity increases with oscillation amplitude and opening size, the generated thrust does not always scale proportionally. Counterintuitively, microbubbles with larger openings are more likely to produce greater thrust than those with smaller openings under identical acoustic excitation, despite generating weaker streaming flows. This phenomenon is experimentally confirmed using a microcantilever-based thrust measurement system. Our study provides key insights into the mechanics of microbubble-driven propulsion and highlight the the critical role of opening size in acoustic streaming thrust, offering valuable guidance for the design of next-generation microbubble-based acoustic microrobots for various biomedical applications.

Evaporation of cyclohexane and ethanol binary drops under acoustic levitation was investigated. The aim was to understand the effect of acoustic levitation on the evaporation dynamics and involved physical processes of the binary drops. We report the occurrence of liquid-phase separation of the binary drop during evaporation under acoustic levitation. Through systematic experiments, it was found that the enhanced evaporation rate of the drop under acoustic levitation led to a significant temperature decrease. In addition, driven by external acoustic streaming, water vapor tended to be enriched and condensed on the drop surface. Because ethanol is extremely soluble in water, tiny cyclohexane droplets were extracted from ethanol owing to water condensation. In addition, driven by the internal flow of the acoustically levitated drop, the extracted cyclohexane droplets coalesced, eventually resulting in macro-segregation in the drop. These findings provide new insights into the evaporation dynamics of acoustically levitated drops, thus, shedding light on industrial purification and separation of volatile liquids with opposite water solubilities, such as cyclohexane and ethanol.

Aggregation-dependent brightness (ADB) indirectly limits the in vitro performance of a pure aggregation-induced emission (AIE) probe in many ways; thus, controlling the aggregation state of the AIE probe is helpful for detecting an object of interest. Many studies are focused on the molecule design of the AIE probes, while less efforts have been made for the control of the aggregation of the AIEs. Here, an acoustic streaming tweezer (AST) generated using a gigahertz bulk acoustic wave resonator was applied to manipulate the aggregation status of the AIE probe and further enhance their performance for human serum albumin (HSA) detection. As the trapping size of the AST matches the working size of the AIE probe, the streaming can enrich and accumulate AIE nanoparticles, which then further trigger larger aggregates. Due to the ADB effect, the fluorescence intensity strongly increased, and thus, the detection limit of HSA was reduced to 0.5 μg/mL, which is low enough for kidney disease detection. Such an AST-assisted ADB strategy is potentially applicable to other AIE probes and can work as a portable choice for the biomedical detection.

SERS measurements for monitoring bactericides in dairy products are highly desired for food safety problems. However, the complicated preparation process of SERS substrates greatly impedes the promotion of SERS . Here, we propose acoustofluidic one-step synthesis of Ag nanoparticles on paper substrates for SERS detection. Our method is economical, fast, simple, and eco-friendly. We adopted laser cutting to cut out appropriate paper shapes, and aldehydes were simultaneously produced at the cutting edge in the pyrolysis of cellulose by laser which were leveraged as the reducing reagent. In the synthesis, only 5 μL of Ag precursor was added to complete the reaction, and no reducing agent was used. Our recently developed acoustofluidic device was employed to intensely mix Ag + ions and aldehydes and spread the reduced Ag nanoparticles over the substrate. The SERS substrate was fabricated in 1 step and 3 min. The standard R6G solution measurement demonstrated the excellent signal and prominent uniformity of the fabricated SERS substrates. SERS detection of the safe concentration of three bactericides , including tetracycline hydrochloride , thiabendazole , and malachite green, from food samples can be achieved using fabricated substrates. We take the least cost, time, reagents, and steps to fabricate the SERS substrate with satisfying performance. Our work has an extraodinary meaning for the green preparation and large-scale application of SERS.

Liposomes have garnered significant attention owing to their favorable characteristics as promising carriers. Microfluidic based hydrodynamic flow focusing, or micro-mixing approaches enable precise control of liposome size during their synthesis due to the comparable size scale. However, current microfluidic approaches still have issues such as high flow rate dependency, complex chip structures, and ease of clogging. Herein, we present a novel microfluidic platform for size-tunable liposome synthesis based on an ultra-high-frequency acoustic resonator. By designing the shape and orientation of the acoustic resonator in the three-phase laminar flow, it combined the features of both hydrodynamic flow focusing and rapid micro-mixing. The distribution of lipid precursor solution in laminar flow and the mixing conditions could be regulated by the confined acoustic streaming vortex. We successfully synthesize liposomes with adjustable sizes and narrow size distributions. Notably, this platform regulates the product size by adjusting only the input power, which is less dependent on the flow rate. Furthermore, the vortex-like fluid flow generated along the device edge effectively prevents precipitation due to excessive lipid concentration or contact with the wall.

Here, we present a high performance uncooled near-infrared (NIR) detector comprising of a giga hertz (GHz) solidly mounted resonator (SMR) and gold nanorods (GNRs) arrays. By coupling the localized surface plasmon resonances of GNRs, the resonator system exhibits optimized optical response to vis-NIR region. Both simulation and experiments demonstrate the hybrid GNRs-SMR exhibit significantly enhanced optical responsive sensitivity of NIR, the tunable aspect ratios (AR) of GNRs enable resonator respond sensitively to selected light. Specially, taking advantage of the acoustofluidic effect of SMR, the GNRs can be controllably and precisely modified on the microchip surface in an ultra-short time, which addresses one of the most fundamental challenges in the localized functionalization of micro/nano scale surface. The presented work opens new directions in development of novel miniaturized, tunable NIR detector.
