Synthesis of blue photoluminescent WS2 quantum dots via ultrasonic cavitation

A. Bayat,E. Saievar-Iranizad

Blue photoluminescent WS 2 quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized using a simple top-down method from natural raw mineral tungsten disulfide via tip ultrasonication followed by centrifugation in a water-ethanol (0.7/0.3 ratio) as eco-friendly solvent. Cavitation process at a high power (300   W) led to the breaking of bulk WS 2 flakes to its quantum dots. The as synthesized WS 2 QDs showed blue photoluminescence upon UV excitation. The synthesized WS 2 QDs were analysed by UV–vis and photoluminescence spectrophotometry , transmission electron microscopy , atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. According to the transmission electron microscopy images, the size of WS 2 QDs was obtained as 5   nm in average.

The Role of Oxalic Acid in the Leaching System for Recovering Indium from Waste Liquid Crystal Display Panels

Jiaying Cui,Nengwu Zhu,Deliang Luo,Yao Li,Pingxiao Wu,Zhi Dang,Xuan Hu

In this study, oxalic acid showed better performance than inorganic acid in the indium leaching system from waste liquid crystal displays. The In3+ leaching efficiency with the powder dosage of 50 g/L came up to 100% within 45 min, using 0.5 M oxalic acid and stewing at 70 °C. Ultrasonic cavitation can improve the powder dosage. Combined with the substance analysis using ICP, XPS, SEM, and XRD, In2O3 dissolution depended on the distributive H+ concentration. Metal hydrolysis was a general negative phenomenon for ions loss in an acid leaching system. According to the Arrhenius model, the apparent activation energy for the indium leaching reaction was 43.622 kJ/mol, indicating that the indium leaching rate was mainly affected by the ion diffusion process through the solid–liquid interface and the chemical reaction process. Oxalic acid can maintain an appropriate H+ concentration to reduce the acid consumption from nontarget substances to relieve the powder surface corrosion for reuse and to inhibit metal hydrolysis, and its C2O42– ions also could precipitate some metal impurities such as Ca2+ and Sr2+ in the leachate.

Study on separation characteristics of water in oil (W/O) emulsion under ultrasonic standing wave field

Xiaoming Luo,Juhang Cao,Haipeng Yan,Haiyang Gong,Haoran Yin,Limin He

The separation characteristics of W/O emulsion were investigated under ultrasonic standing wave field in this paper. The effects of the irradiation time, acoustic intensity, frequency, oil viscosity, and oil-water interfacial tension on the separation characteristics of emulsion were studied in details. It was proved that there existed an optimal irradiation time, acoustic intensity and oil-water interfacial tension to achieve the maximum separation efficiency in ultrasonic treatment process. Excessive long irradiation time had little effect on improving the dehydration rate of emulsion but rather increased unnecessary processing time. Excessive high acoustic intensity caused the occurrence of acoustic cavitation phenomenon. The acoustic cavitation would cause the aggregated droplets to be dispersed by oscillating bubbles or even emulsified again by high speed micro jets. The acoustic cavitation threshold is effectively and accurately obtained by a spectral analysis method. The micro acoustic streaming which resulted from the attenuation of acoustic energy occurred with the increase of frequency. It sheared the aggregated droplets, destroyed the stable droplets banding and reduced the separation efficiency of emulsion. The excess surfactant adsorbed on the oil-water interface resulted in the increase of the interfacial film strength, which hindered the coalescence process of droplets and reduced the separation efficiency.

Fabrication of repairable anti-corrosive superhydrophobic surfaces with micro-nano structures by ultrasonic cavitation

Fengjun Chen,Jianhua Du,Shuai Huang

We proposed a novel superhydrophobic fabrication method based on ultrasonic cavitation. The collapse of cavitation bubbles eroded the surface to form a microstructure with high roughness. SiO 2 nanoparticles were then effectively anchored on the surface using cavitation jets to form a micro-nano composite structure. The superhydrophobic performance was evaluated on the basis of the water contact angle (WCA). The proposed method achieved robust superhydrophobic property, and the WCA of copper, brass and 304 stainless steel substrates exceeded 153.3°. The morphology and composition of the superhydrophobic surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscopes and Fourier transform infrared, respectively. Results revealed that the SiO 2 particles were uniformly dispersed, and a flaw-free state was obtained by the surface. The samples exhibited excellent anti-corrosive durability during ultraviolet and outdoor testing and immersion in different corrosive solutions. The cavity generated by the cavitation erosion can be used as a container to suppress the loss of effective components. The micro-nano double layer structure was retained, and the WCA can be restored to the original level through functionalization again to give low surface energy. The prepared superhydrophobic surface was repairable. In addition, the WCAs of the copper foam and sponge were 157.0° and 159.6°, respectively.

Beneficial impact of incorporating spinel lithium manganate and samarium oxide into high performance positive materials through ultrasonic cavitation strategy

Bao Zhang,Yannan Zhang,Bowen Zhu,Jianguo Duan,Xue Li,Xiaoyuan Zeng,Zheng Lian,Rui Gong,Kai Zhou,Zhengwu Wang,Yifeng Gao,Peng Dong,Yingjie Zhang

Spinel LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO) positive material has the advantage of a robust structure with a three-dimensional network of channels for fast Li + conduction, which is one of the hot topics in the zero-cobalt electrodes field of new energy technology. Nonetheless, the spinel LiMn 2 O 4 has serious transition metal dissolution as well as phase/surface stability problems, resulting in unsatisfactory cycle performance which hinders large scale applications in the field of lithium-ion batteries. In this study, Sm 2 O 3 surface modified LiMn 2 O 4 positive material is obtained by a facile ultrasonic cavitation combined with sol-gel strategy. The structural and surface morphological are analyses by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy illuminate the formation of the Sm 2 O 3 -coated LiMn 2 O 4 . Electrochemical analysis revealed that the LMO particles coated by the 1 wt% Sm 2 O 3 is exhibited the best electrochemical performance among other coated and non-coated samples, with an initial capacity of 110.92 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention of 94.79% after 200 cycles. Furthermore, ICP analysis is showed that the manganese dissolution of the modified material in organic electrolyte is much lower than that of pristine sample. This work may provoke wide interests in surface modification areas and motivate the further improvement of the electrochemical performance for other commercialized spinel lithium ion batteries (LIBs).

Promoting ultrasonic cavitation via Negative-Curvature nanoparticles

Zhouling Wu,Xiaobin Liu,Huiying Guo,Jie Huang,Guangyu He,Hongyu Chen,Xueyang Liu

It is a challenge to study the nucleation of cavitation bubbles, which critically depends on nanoscale morphological features. Our recent advances in synthesizing colloidal negative-curvature nanoparticles (NGC-NPs) offer a rare opportunity, in comparison to the conventional studies of bulk substrates, where it is difficult to obtain consistent and well-defined surface features. In order to quantitatively assess their effects, we exploit the radical-induced color change of [Fe(SCN) 6 ] 3− , which turned out to be a more convenient method than the bending of AgNWs and the fluorescence-based methods. We show that the NGC-NPs outperform positive-curvature nanoparticles (PSC-NPs) and homogeneous nucleation, in terms of promoting cavitation. The NGC-NPs provide a higher percentage of gas–solid interface, and thus reduces the activation barrier during the critical stage of bubble nucleation. This leads a higher probability of cavitation and transforms more energy from ultrasonication to radical formation and shockwaves.

Degradation of organic wastewater by hydrodynamic cavitation combined with acoustic cavitation

Chunhai Yi,Qianqian Lu,Yun Wang,Yixuan Wang,Bolun Yang

In this paper, the decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB) by hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), acoustic cavitation (AC) and the combination of these individual methods (HAC) have been investigated. The degradation of 20 L RhB aqueous solution was carried out in a self-designed HAC reactor, where hydrodynamic cavitation and acoustic cavitation could take place in the same space simultaneously. The effects of initial concentration, inlet pressure, solution temperature and ultrasonic power were studied and discussed. Obvious synergies were found in the HAC process. The combined method achieved the best conversion, and the synergistic effect in HAC was even up to 119% with the ultrasonic power of 220 W in a treatment time of 30 min. The time-independent synergistic factor based on rate constant was introduced and the maximum value reached 40% in the HAC system. Besides, the hybrid HAC method showed great superiority in energy efficiency at lower ultrasonic power (88–176 W). Therefore, HAC technology can be visualized as a promising method for wastewater treatment with good scale-up possibilities.

Active targeting nano-scale bubbles enhanced ultrasound cavitation chemotherapy in Y1 receptor-overexpressed breast cancer

Xuechen Qian,Yinjie Wang,Youfeng Xu,Ling Ma,Nianyu Xue,Zhenqi Jiang,Yi Cao,Ozioma Udochukwu Akakuru,Juan Li,Shengmin Zhang,Aiguo Wu

Ultrasound cavitation therapy has attracted much attention in recent years because the cavitation of microbubbles can be leveraged to boost the infiltration of chemotherapeutic drugs into cancer tissues. For breast cancer therapy, most of the previously reported microbubbles lack specific targeting capacity and permeability. In this study, we have successfully fabricated Y1 receptor ligand (NPY)-modified bubbles, and examined their therapeutic efficacies as size-dependent functions with or without NPY targeting. To achieve this, four types of micro-scale bubbles (MBs or MBs-NPY) and nano-scale bubbles (NBs or NBs-NPY) were comprehensively evaluated. In vivo results indicated that the NBs-NPY group with doxorubicin (DOX) under ultrasound irradiation showed a high tumor suppression effect and a prolonged survival time. Furthermore, the NBs-NPY with DOX group exhibited minimal damage to mouse vital organs, which points to the considerable tolerance of the proposed nanosystem for efficacious breast cancer therapy. In summary, these findings suggest that the developed NPY-targeted NBs could have a broad application prospect in ultrasound cavitation chemotherapy of Y1 receptor-overexpressed breast cancer.

Improved assessment sensitivity of time-varying cavitation events based on wavelet analysis

Qi Zhang,Guofeng Zhang,Lan Luo,Zijun Liu,Yifei Zhu,Zheng Fan,Xiasheng Guo,Xiaoge Wu,Dong Zhang,Juan Tu

Ultrasonic cavitation, characterized by the oscillation or abrupt collapse of cavitation nuclei in response to ultrasound stimulation, plays a significant role in various applications within both industrial and biomedical sectors. In particular, inertial cavitation (IC) has garnered considerable attention due to the resulting mechanical, chemical, and thermal effects. Passive cavitation detection (PCD) has emerged as a valuable technique for monitoring this procedure. While the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is a widely used algorithm to analyze IC-induced broadband noise detected by PCD system, it may not adequately capture the time-varying instability of cavitation due to potential nuclei collapse during ultrasound irradiation. In contrast, the continuous wavelet transform offers a more flexible approach, enabling more sensitive analysis of signals with varying frequencies over time. In this study, nanodiamond (ND) and its derivative, nitro-doped nanodiamond (N-AND), known to possess cavitation potential from previous research, were chosen as the source of cavitation nuclei. The cavitation signals detected by PCD were subjected to both FFT and wavelet analyses, with their results comprehensively compared. This research showcased the feasibility of employing wavelet analysis for effective inertial cavitation evaluation. It provided the advantage of monitoring the temporal evolution of cavitation events in real-time, enhancing sensitivity to weak and unstable cavitation signals, especially those in higher order components (3rd and 4th order). Additionally, it yielded a higher level of precision in determining IC thresholds and doses. Furthermore, the inclusion of time information through wavelet analysis offered insights into the limitations of low-cycle ultrasound in inducing IC. This study introduces a novel perspective for more sensitive and precise cavitation assessment, leveraging time and frequency data from wavelet analysis, and holds promise for effective utilization of cavitation effects while minimizing losses and damages resulting from unintended cavitation events.

The influence of pressure on the acoustic cavitation in saturated CO2-expanded N, N-dimethylformamide

Hanyang Gao,Kunkun Pei,Guoxin Hu,Wenxing Liu,Aihua Meng,Hongcheng Wang,Huifeng Shao,Wenxin Li

CO 2 -expanded organic solvent is a kind of important fluid medium and has broad applications in chemical industry, environmental protection and other fields. Ultrasonic cavitation in gas expanded liquids (GXLs) is conducive to enhancing mass transfer and producing many exciting phenomena. In this paper, the ultrasonic cavitations and streaming in the saturated CO 2 -expanded liquid N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 4.2 MPa and 5.2 MPa are observed by a high-speed camera. The cavitation intensity and time trace of pressure pulses are recorded using a PZT hydrophone. The influences of gas–liquid equilibrium pressure and ultrasonic power on the cluster dynamics of transient and stable cavitation are examined. The excess molar enthalpies required for CO 2 dissociation from DMF are calculated by Peng-Robinson equations of state and the change of surface free energy of CO 2 -expanded DMF is predicted. The results show that the excess enthalpy of the mixture is one of the key factors to control ultrasonic cavitation at high pressurized conditions, while the surface tension is the key factor for low pressure. As the increase of applied ultrasonic power, the formation and collapsing frequency of bubble clusters increases, and the amplitude and cyclic frequency of pressure pulse are enhanced. The transient cavitation intensity increases as it reaches a maximum value at a certain ultrasonic power and then decreases. The change trends of stable cavitation intensity under different pressures are basically same. It can be concluded from the evidence that ultrasonic cavitation in CO 2 -expanded DMF is affected by the combined effect of compression and substitution: compression depresses the nucleation and growth of bubbles, while the high solubility of CO 2 in DMF is conducive to the generation of bubbles in cavitation.

Microfluidic ultrasonic cavitation enables versatile and scalable synthesis of monodisperse nanoparticles for biomedical application

Zhikai Liu,Mei Yang,Wang Yao,Tingting Wang,Guangwen Chen

Controllable and scalable synthesis of biomedical organic nanoparticles (NPs) with tailored properties is critical for their clinical translation. However, the existing microfluidics-based synthesis is challenged by clogging and limited throughput, while the traditional ultrasound-assisted synthesis suffers from inhomogeneous cavitation activity, leading to wide particle size distribution. Herein, a series of biomedical organic NPs were successfully synthesized in a controlled, clog-free and scalable manner via a versatile microfluidic ultrasonic cavitation (MUC) approach. First, the effects of microchannel dimension and operating conditions on ultrasonic cavitation behavior and mixing performance was systematically studied. Cavitation pattern maps were developed for different operating conditions. By adjusting microchannel dimension and operating parameters, rapid mixing on a millisecond scale can be accomplished across an extensive range of conditions, including flow rates between 4 and 24 mL/min and flow rate ratios from 5:1 to 1:1. Then, the MUC approach was utilized to synthesize polymeric NPs, lipopolymeric NPs and lipid NPs encapsulating mRNA (mRNA-LNP). Compared to traditional microfluidics and ultrasound-based methods, NPs synthesized by MUC approach showed smaller sizes and more uniform distributions. The ability of MUC approach for clog-free and scalable production was demonstrated by the continuous synthesis of lipopolymeric NPs at a throughput of 1.6 g/h with desired properties. The successful synthesis of soft and fragile mRNA-LNPs has been accomplished by tailoring the cavitation pattern of MUC approach. The resultant mRNA-LNPs showed a mRNA encapsulation rate as high as 98.3%, over 99% transfection efficiency of cell with 0.5 μg dosage, and robust luciferase expression with 10 μg dosage at the injection site of BALB/c mice 24 h after injection.

Transcytosable and Ultrasound-Activated Liposome Enables Deep Penetration of Biofilm for Surgical Site Infection Management

Guowei Wang,Chengyue Zhang,Zixuan Huang,Jifan Chen,Hongjian Chen,Tao Lin,Zhuxian Zhou,Ning Gu,Pintong Huang

Biofilm-associated surgical site infection (BSSI) is a common and grievous postoperative complication lacking effective remedies, mainly due to the poor drug accumulation and penetration in the biofilms featured by dense extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). Here, it is found that the vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM1) is highly overexpressed in the vascular cells of BSSI. It is proposed that the combination of VCAM1-mediated transcytosis and ultrasonic cavitation can consecutively overcome the biological barriers of vascular endothelial cells and EPS for biofilm eradication. To demonstrate the feasibility, a VCAM1-targeted and ultrasound (US)-activated liposome (LPCOTML) loaded with a reactive-oxygen-species (ROS)-responsive lipoid prodrug of oleoyl meropenem, sonosensitizer of lipoid Ce6, and perfluoropentane is developed. LPCOTML can recognize the receptors on vascular cells, and initiate receptor-mediated transcytosis for transendothelial transport into the BSSI periphery. LPCOTML subsequently transforms from nanoparticle into microbubble via liquid–gas phase transition under US irradiation, triggering strong ultrasonic cavitation to blow up the EPS and deeply penetrate the biofilms. The sonosensitizer Ce6 induces ROS production under US irradiation and triggers the release of meropenem to induce potent antibacterial effect in a BSSI model. This study presents an effective strategy to tackle the biological barriers in BSSI via combining receptor-mediated transcytosis and ultrasonic cavitation.
