Measurement of the Speed of Sound in Hexane and Heptane at Temperatures from (303.15 to 536.15) K and Pressures from (1.0 to 8.5) MPa

Xiong Zheng,Ying Zhang,Maogang He

The speed of sound in hexane and heptane (mass purity > 0.990, GC) was measured using the Brillouin light scattering method at T = (300.15 to 506.15) K for hexane, (302.15 to 536.15) K for heptane), and p = (1.0 to 8.5) MPa, including saturated liquid, saturated vapor, and compressed liquid. The expanded relative uncertainty (k = 2) of the speed of sound was estimated to be less than 1.0% over the whole investigated range of states. Polynomial representations for the speed of sound in hexane and heptane were fitted to the experimental results. A comparison of the speed of sound data with the correlation shows that, for hexane, the AAD is 0.67% for the saturated liquid, 0.36% for the saturated vapor and 0.57% for the compressed liquid respectively, and for heptane, the AAD is 0.46% for the saturated liquid, 0.38% for the saturated vapor and 0.41% for the compressed liquid, respectively.

Speed of Sound and Derived Properties of Ethyl Nonanoate

Taotao Zhan,Ying Zhang,Qi Zhou,Junshuai Chen,Xiaopo Wang,Xiangyang Liu,Maogang He

Ethyl nonanoate is a promising component of biodiesel with a satisfactory cetane number and reactivity. The speeds of sound in ethyl nonanoate were measured by the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) method within the temperatures from 295.24 to 593.15 K and at pressures up to 10 MPa. The relative expanded uncertainty (k = 2) of our BLS experimental system is estimated to be less than 0.7%. The densities of ethyl nonanoate were measured using a vibrating tube densimeter at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range of 293.15–353.15 K, and the absolute average relative deviation between the experimental densities and the literature data is 0.12%. For temperatures between 303.15 and 353.15 K and at pressures up to 10 MPa, these measurements were used to calculate densities, isobaric heat capacities, and indirect derivative properties including the isobaric thermal expansion, the isothermal compressibility, the isentropic compressibility, and the internal pressure. The comparison between the calculated isobaric heat capacities and the literature values shows a satisfactory agreement with an absolute average relative deviation of 0.18% and a maximum deviation of 0.38%. At the end, the dependences of internal pressure of ethyl nonanoate on temperature and pressure were found to be in accordance with those of ethyl caprylate and ethyl caprate.

Ying Zhang,Yutian Chen,Taotao Zhan,Maogang He

The speed of sound in n-heptane was measured by the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) method. The examined region is T = (513.40 to 650.90) K along seven isobaric lines at p = (2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0) MPa, which was near the critical point of n-heptane. The relative expanded uncertainty (k = 2) of BLS experimental system is estimated to be <0.013 for the speed of sound measurement. The variation tendencies of the speed of sound with increasing temperature and pressure were illustrated. Moreover, the calculated results from the multiparameter equation of state (EOS) proposed by Span and Wagner were employed to assess the experimental data in this paper. The absolute average of the deviations (AAD) between the experimental data and the calculated results is 1.22% in the whole investigated p–T region.

Ying Zhang,Yongbo Zhang,Yuqi Su,Junshuai Chen,Taotao Zhan,Hengfei Zhang,Maogang He

We report the speeds of sound for the mixtures of ethanol (1) + isooctane (2) at 0.100, 0.300, 0.500, 0.700, 0.900 molar fractions of ethanol, respectively, at temperatures from 298.15 to 605.23 K along three isobaric lines from 3.0 to 7.0 MPa. On the basis of the experimental results and the literature density data, we evaluate the excess free length, excess acoustic impedance, and excess isothermal compressibility of ethanol (1) + isooctane (2) mixtures at 298.15 to 435.15 K and pressures below 5.0 MPa. Moreover, we fit the excess values by the Redlich–Kister polynomial equation. Finally, molecular interactions between ethanol and isooctane are analyzed.

Experimental investigation and modeling of thermophysical properties of ethyl decanoate at high temperatures

Ying Zhang,Taotao Zhan,Junshuai Chen,Xiangyang Liu,Maogang He

The use of ethyl decanoate combined with conventional diesel or biodiesel could be economically attractive. Thermophysical properties of ethyl decanoate at high temperatures can be an essential guidance for the structural design and optimization of the fuel injection system in diesel engine. The measurements of the speed of sound and the thermal diffusivity of ethyl decanoate (EeC10: 0) were carried out by the light scattering method, which are along five isobaric lines from (0.1–10) MPa at the temperatures (300.71–562.07) K and (295.34–565.49) K, respectively. The expanded relative uncertainties ( k  = 2) of the measurement systems are estimated to be 1.2% for speed of sound and 2.4% for thermal diffusivity. The thermal conductivities of ethyl decanoate at pressures up to 10 MPa and in the temperature range (303–363) K are derived, which agree well with literature values finding an AAD of 0.81%. The pρT dependences of the thermal conductivity are analyzed based on the vibrational theory. The results obtained show that the higher density of biofuels leads to smaller distances between oscillating molecules, of which the collision probability and intermolecular energy transport are enhanced. The consistent behaviors of biofuels that higher density leads to higher conductivity, and the dependence of the thermal conductivity on density becomes smaller with temperature increase are verified.

Ying Zhang,Yutian Chen,Yu Zheng,Xinxin He,Maogang He

The speed of sound in n-octane and isooctane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane) was measured by the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) method. The examined regions for n-octane are T = (297–580) K along five isobaric lines at p = 0.1, 4.0, 7.0, 10.0, and 12.0 MPa for liquid and T = (573–673) K along ten isobaric lines with p = (3.0–10.0) MPa for supercritical fluid. The examined regions for isooctane are T = (294–525) K along five isobaric lines at p = 0.1, 3.0, 6.0, 10.0, and 12.0 MPa for liquid and T = (543–630) K along six isobaric lines with p = (3.0–10.0) MPa for supercritical fluid. The relative expanded uncertainty of the speed of sound is estimated less than 1.3%. Polynomial representations for the speed of sound in liquid n-octane and isooctane were fitted to the experimental results, respectively. The AADs are 0.27% for n-octane and 0.19% for isooctane. The influence of temperature and pressure on the speed of sound was also analyzed. Moreover, the data were also used to assess the predicted ability of three equations of state for n-octane.
