Backing materials play important role in enhancing the acoustic performance of an ultrasonic transducer. Most backing materials prepared by conventional methods failed to show both high acoustic impedance and attenuation, which however determine the bandwidth and axial resolution of acoustic transducer, respectively. In the present work, taking advantage of the structural feature of 3D graphene foam as a confined space for dense packing of tungsten spheres with the assistance of centrifugal force, the desired structural requirement for high impedance is obtained. Meanwhile, superior thermal conductivity of graphene contributes to the acoustic attenuation via the conversion of acoustic waves to thermal energy. The tight contact between tungstate spheres, epoxy matrix, or graphene makes the acoustic wave depleted easily for the absence of air barrier. The as-prepared 3DG/W80 wt %/epoxy film in 1 mm, prepared using ∼41 μm W spheres in diameter, not only displays acoustic impedance of 13.05 ± 0.11 MRayl but also illustrates acoustic attenuation of 110.15 ± 1.23 dB/cm MHz. Additionally, the composite film exhibits a high acoustic absorption coefficient, which is 94.4% at 1 MHz and 100% at 3 MHz, respectively. Present composite film outperforms most of the reported backing materials consisting of metal fillers/polymer blending in terms of the acoustic impedance and attenuation.

PZT-8 ceramics exhibit outstanding performance in sensor applications owing to their superior piezoelectric properties. Nevertheless, conventional dense PZT-8 ceramics are subject to certain limitations, including high acoustic impedance and relatively low energy conversion efficiency, which restrict their broader application potential. Porous architectures offer a viable solution by enabling controlled porosity, thereby improving acoustic matching and enhancing energy harvesting efficiency. Although 3D printing presents a cost-effective method for fabricating complex ceramic geometries, ultraviolet (UV) light-based photopolymerization techniques have encountered challenges in processing PZT-8 ceramics due to their strong UV absorption characteristics. To address this limitation, this study introduces a novel strategy by incorporating non-absorbent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) into the formulation of high-performance porous PZT-8 piezoelectric ceramics tailored for digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing. Systematic investigations demonstrate that increasing PMMA content (5 wt% to 25 wt%) positively influences curing depth while simultaneously affecting microstructure and electrical properties. The experimental results show d 33 values ranging from 176 to 272 pC/N, k t values from 35.84% to 46.55%, Z values from 18.13 to 22.22 MRayls, FOM values from 8.92 to 10.55 × 10 -12 m 2 /N, and HFOM values from 3.47 to 4.40 × 10 -12 m 2 /N.

Transcranial ultrasound imaging and therapy have gained significant attention due to their noninvasive nature, absence of ionizing radiation, and portability. However, the presence of the skull, which has a high acoustic impedance, presents a challenge for the penetration of ultrasound into intracranial tissue. This leads to a low transmission of ultrasound through the skull, hindering energy focusing and imaging quality. To address this challenge, we propose a novel approach that utilizes a flexible matching layer with gradual acoustic impedance to enhance ultrasound transmission through the skull. This matching layer is constructed using Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/tungsten powders as the structural component responsible for the gradual impedance, while agarose serves as the flexible matrix. Our simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the matching layer with an exponential gradual acoustic impedance significantly improves the ultrasound transmission coefficient across a wide frequency range compared to traditional quarter wavelength matching layers. Specifically, at 2 MHz, the maximum transmission coefficient reaches 49.5%, more than four times higher than that of the skull without a matching layer (only 11.7%). Additionally, the good flexibility of our matching layer ensures excellent adhesion to the curved surface of the skull, further enhancing its application potential in transcranial ultrasound imaging and therapy. The improved transmission performance allows for a lower ultrasound transmission power, effectively addressing overheating and safety issues.

Conventional hydrogel preparation typically involves the use of solvents (mostly water), which increases the free volume between polymer chains and weakens their interactions, resulting in mechanically weak hydrogels with limited viscoelasticity. Here, a solvent-free synthesis strategy is presented to produce tough, swelling-resistant physical hydrogels with ultra-wide frequency viscoelasticity (loss factor tan δ > 0.3 at 10 −10 –10 5 Hz). This is achieved through the bulk copolymerization of highly miscible hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers, forming water-free copolymers that develop into phase-separated hydrogels with dense chain entanglements upon equilibration in water. The resulting hydrogel exhibits significant mechanical enhancements over counterparts prepared through classical micellar copolymerization, with stiffness, strength, and fracture toughness increased by up to 81, 46, and 41 times, respectively. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the tough hydrogel with excellent swelling resistance is applied as a sound-absorbing coating for underwater vehicles, minimizing acoustic interference during marine research through its strong viscoelasticity and near-perfect acoustic impedance matching with water. Unlike conventional solvent-assisted polymerization methods used for hydrogel preparation, bulk copolymerization offers advantages such as ultra-high monomer concentration, pure products, and straightforward process, providing new insights for developing simple yet tough hydrogels that are not only promising for underwater applications but also conducive to theoretical studies.

In this study, 0.57(Bi 0.8 La 0.2 )FeO 3 -0.43PbTiO 3 (BLF-PT) porous ceramics were fabricated by the burnable plastic sphere method using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a pore forming agent. X-ray diffraction results reveal that BLF-PT porous ceramics mixed with tetragonal and rhombohedral phases display the single perovskite structure, changing little for different porosities. Scanning electron microscope images show that porosity of BLF-PT ceramics increases with the increase of PMMA content with average grain size of 3.2–3.5 μm. Different from the continuous decrease of dielectric constant ε r and remnant polarization P r , piezoelectric constant d 33 of BLF-PT porous ceramics increases initially but then drops with the increase of porosity that reaches to the maximum of 230 pC/N at porosity of 8.5 vol.%. The abnormal enhancement of piezoelectric property is attributed to the unique three-dimensional grid porous ceramic skeleton and uniformly distributed grain size. Moreover, acoustic impedance Z of BLF-PT porous ceramic is 11.2 MRayls at porosity of 24.3 vol.% comparing with that of 17.7 MRayls for bulk ceramics, which reduces by 58%. BLF-PT porous ceramics at lower porosity with enhanced piezoelectric and acoustic matching performances have a great potential in the fields of underwater acoustic transducers and medical ultrasonic diagnosis.

Effectively attenuating highly penetrative low-frequency noise (LFN, f < 500 Hz) presents a significant challenge. Traditional acoustic insulation materials are circumscribed by the mass law, presenting an inherent conflict between lightweight design and acoustic insulation. Despite the promising potential of PUA aerogels in acoustic insulation, attributed to their lightweight and high damping properties, their low-density results in inadequate areal density. Consequently, it remains challenging to effectively suppress LFN through mass inertia alone. Moreover, lightweight design often reduces mechanical properties, creating a conflict between lightweight, high strength, and low-frequency acoustic insulation. Inspired by the periodic structures of metamaterials, this study fabricates a PUA aerogel with an ordered metamaterial-like structure (density: 0.126 g/cm 3 ). Through self-assembly induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an ordered porous cavity and fibrous topological skeleton were formed. This structure creates an efficient interfacial reflection network that provides dynamic acoustic impedance for LFN attenuation. The average STL is at least 42.6 dB in the 45–500 Hz range and 39.6 dB in the broader 45–6300 Hz range, 16.35 times higher than that of commercial melamine foam of the same 2 cm thickness. Its weight is just 1/770 that of lightweight concrete bricks with equivalent noise reduction performance, and its thickness is only 2/25 of theirs. At 145 °C, the aerogel maintains a temperature difference of approximately 105.05 °C between its surfaces. The compressive strength of the modified aerogels is 2.76 times that of unmodified PUA aerogels. The simple, cost-effective fabrication process and the lightweight, high-strength, and outstanding low-frequency acoustic insulation properties make metamaterial-like PUA aerogels promising for noise reduction in residential, transportation, and industrial applications.
