Lossless droplet transfer via micro-tube is urgently demanded in the fields of microfluidics and biomedicine. However, as the core component for the construction of lossless droplet transfer platform, the fabrication of low-adhesion micro-tubes is still a longstanding challenge. To solve the problems such as complex reaction procedures, difficult-to-clean reaction products, non-uniform wettability , etc. during the synthesis of the low-adhesion micro-tubes, a new one-step approach for the preparation of superhydrophobic micro-tubes has been developed, with the help of atmospheric pressure cold plasma (APCP) deposition technology. This method can break through the limitations of micro-tube materials, and achieve the preparation of superhydrophobic surface in glass and transparent Teflon tubes using a lab-made plasma generator . The mechanism of the superhydrophobic surface preparation by APCP deposition involves the formation of a micro-nano composite structure and hydrophobic functional groups. The results point out that the inner wall of the superhydrophobic micro-tube has good and consistent wettability, and uniform morphology. The reduction in transparency of the micro-tube was less than 5% within the wavelength range of 400 nm~1100 nm. Using the as-prepared superhydrophobic micro-tube as the core component, the lossless droplet transfer platform based on the non-contact ultrasonic driving was set up. Finally, the lossless droplet transfer under extreme conditions like in vertical micro-tubes, curve micro-tubes, spiral micro-tubes, using high-speed liquid feed at 850 μL/min was successfully achieved, with the transportation distance reaching hundreds of millimeters. With excellent performances, the lossless droplet transfer platform promises great potential applications in the fields like microfluidics, biomedicine and advanced device design.

A growing interest in the development of efficient strategies for the removal of organic pollutants from polluted water is emerging. As such, artificial micro/nano machines performing excellent water purification tasks have recently attracted more research attention of scientists. Hereby a spinous Fe 3 O 4 @PPy microrobot is presented that towards an efficient organic pollutant removal by enhancing Fenton-like reaction. The microrobot is fabricated by wrapping polypyrrole (PPy) on a spiny magnetic template prepared from sunflowers pollen. Modulating the sound pressure and frequency of the ultrasonic field enables the Fe 3 O 4 @PPy microrobot to present multimode motion, such as violent eruption-like motion caused by local cavitation (ELM), march-like unific motion (MLM), and typhoon-like rotation toward the center gathered motion (TLM). This multimode motion achieves the sufficient locomotion of microrobots in three-dimensional space and effective contact with organic pollutants in polluted water. Furthermore, a 5.2-fold increase in the degradation rate of methylene blue has been realized using Fe 3 O 4 @PPy microrobots under low-concentration hydrogen peroxide conditions. Also, the magnetically controlled recovery of microrobots from water after the completion of the degradation task has been demonstrated. The magnetic-acoustic actuated spinous microrobot can be extrapolated to other catalytic microrobot, developing a new strategy for an easier implementation and recovery of microrobot in real applications of water purification.

To overcome the propulsion difficulties in low Reynolds number environment, natural species have developed their exclusive swimming strategies after 1000 years of evolution. Inspired by those fascinating creatures, diverse artificial microrobots are proposed to achieve distinctive biomimetic motions. However, the lack of cognition for the propulsion mechanism hinders the exploration of the multimode biomimicking for the microrobots, especially at high-speed locomotion. Herein, biomimetic behaviors of the micro sonobot featured with multiple-layer tubular constructions and trapped microbubbles serving as powerful microengines are reported. The observed speed achieves tens of millimeters per second. Different from previously reported bubble-loaded microrobots, it is observed that primary Bjerknes forces originating from the nonhomogeneous acoustic field make a great contribution to orientation. Along with the streaming propulsion and secondary Bjerknes forces, distinctive biomimetic behaviors including individual locomotion and group aggregation are emerged and theoretically analyzed. The multimode biomimetic motion of micro sonobots offers marvelous potentials in building multifunctional micro/nanosystems for nanosurgery, lab-on-a-chip biosystems, chemical and biological engineering, environmental detoxification, etc.

Ultrasound-actuated microrobots that incorporate entrapped microbubbles rely on acoustic streaming thrust for propulsion. While bubble size and resonance have been extensively studied, the role of opening size remains less understood. In this study, we numerically investigate how the opening size affects both streaming flow and the resulting thrust. Finite element analysis (FEA) reveals that although streaming velocity increases with oscillation amplitude and opening size, the generated thrust does not always scale proportionally. Counterintuitively, microbubbles with larger openings are more likely to produce greater thrust than those with smaller openings under identical acoustic excitation, despite generating weaker streaming flows. This phenomenon is experimentally confirmed using a microcantilever-based thrust measurement system. Our study provides key insights into the mechanics of microbubble-driven propulsion and highlight the the critical role of opening size in acoustic streaming thrust, offering valuable guidance for the design of next-generation microbubble-based acoustic microrobots for various biomedical applications.

Antibacterial piezoelectric materials have broad application prospects in the medical field because of their broad-spectrum antibacterial properties and no bacterial drug resistance. At present, one of the main problems in the application of piezoelectric materials is the low electrocatalytic efficiency, which limits its application in antibacterial field. In this study, a piezoelectric antibacterial (PLGA/Zn-KNN) scaffold was fabricated by incorporating zinc oxide (ZnO) into potassium-sodium niobate (KNN) and composited with a poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) to achieve multicombination antibacterial for bone infection. The physicochemical properties of piezoelectric antibacterial scaffolds were analyzed. Bacterial, cell, and animal experiments were performed to characterize the antibacterial and infection treatment capabilities of piezoelectric scaffolds. The piezoelectric properties of the PLGA/Zn-KNN scaffold were enhanced by embedding ZnO particles into the KNN solid solution matrix. Furthermore, the piezoelectric scaffold released zinc ions, and electrical stimulation driven by ultrasound resulted in significant antibacterial effects through direct and immunoregulatory antibacterial pathways. Mechanistic investigation suggested that extracellular matrix ligands and complement and coagulation cascades may have a moderate effect on macrophage phagocytosis. This work highlights potential application methods for fabricating novel antibacterial hybrid piezoelectric scaffolds and engineering macrophages with immunoregulatory antibacterial activity.

We report a leukocyte membrane-coated gallium nanoswimmer (LMGNS) capable of ultrasound-propelled motion, antibiofouling, and cancer cell recognition and targeting. The LMGNS consists of a needle-shaped gallium core encapsulating an anticancer drug and a natural leukocyte membrane shell. Under the propulsion of an ultrasound field, LMGNSs could autonomously move in biological media with a speed up to 108.7 μm s−1. The velocity and motion direction of the LMGNSs can be modulated by regulating the frequency and voltage of the applied ultrasound field. Owing to the leukocyte membrane coating, LMGNSs can not only avoid biofouling during the motion in blood but also possess cancer cell recognition capability. These LMGNSs could actively seek, penetrate, and internalize into the cancer cells and achieve enhanced anticancer efficiency by combined photothermal and chemical therapy. Such biofunctionalized liquid metal nanoswimmer presents a new type of multifunctional platform for biomedical applications.

Bioinspired by the transformations of animals and plants such as pangolins and mimosas, many biomimetic shape-morphing systems have been developed. However, due to scale effect, microscale interactions become the dominant force, which may make the traditional shape-morphing systems ineffective. Acoustic actuation is expected to overcome this challenge. Here, we have developed an acoustically actuated hydrogel shape-morphing micromachine (AHSMM). It has a variable stiffness design, with the lower stiffness part serving as a flexible hinge to achieve transformation. Under the excitation of acoustic field, the flexible hinge produces strong oscillation and quickly provides the force and torque required for the transformation of AHSMM (generally less than 500 ms). In addition, we have developed a preprogrammed design for the transformation of micromachine to predict its transformation morphology. Furthermore, through the AHSMM, we have separately designed morphing transformations between Chinese characters (e.g., “夫” (fu) to “央” (yang)) and English letters (e.g., “k” to “x”). Finally, we developed a shape-morphing microrobot (width: 174.33 μm) utilizing this flexible hinge, which can pass through a narrow channel through its own shape-morphing, providing great potential in targeted drug delivery (the shape-morphing time is less than 100 ms, the forward speed can reach about 800 μm/s). Our work not only provides innovative ideas for shape-morphing design at the microscale, but also expands the coupling applications of acoustics, soft matter, and microrobots.

Ferroptosis is a non-apoptotic form of cell death that is dependent on the accumulation of intracellular iron that causes elevation of toxic lipid peroxides. Therefore, it is crucial to improve the levels of intracellular iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a short time. Here, we first propose ultrasound (US)-propelled Janus nanomotors (Au–FeOx/PEI/ICG, AFPI NMs) to accelerate cellular internalization and induce cancer cell ferroptosis. This nanomotor consists of a gold–iron oxide rod-like Janus nanomotor (Au–FeOx, AF NMs) and a photoactive indocyanine green (ICG) dye on the surface. It not only exhibits accelerating cellular internalization (∼4-fold) caused by its attractive US-driven propulsion but also shows good intracellular motion behavior. In addition, this Janus nanomotor shows excellent intracellular ROS generation performance due to the synergistic effect of the “Fenton or Fenton-like reaction” and the “photochemical reaction”. As a result, the killing efficiency of actively moving nanomotors on cancer cells is 88% higher than that of stationary nanomotors. Unlike previous passive strategies, this work is a significant step toward accelerating cellular internalization and inducing cancer-cell ferroptosis in an active way. These novel US-propelled Janus nanomotors with strong propulsion, efficient cellular internalization and excellent ROS generation are suitable as a novel cell biology research tool.

Current brain tumor treatments are limited by the skull and BBB, leading to poor prognosis and short survival for glioma patients. We introduce a novel minimally-invasive brain tumor suppression (MIBTS) device combining personalized intracranial electric field therapy with in-situ chemotherapeutic coating. The core of our MIBTS technique is a wireless-ultrasound-powered, chip-sized, lightweight device with all functional circuits encapsulated in a small but efficient “Swiss-roll” structure, guaranteeing enhanced energy conversion while requiring tiny implantation windows ( ~ 3 × 5 mm), which favors broad consumers acceptance and easy-to-use of the device. Compared with existing technologies, competitive advantages in terms of tumor suppressive efficacy and therapeutic resolution were noticed, with maximum ~80% higher suppression effect than first-line chemotherapy and 50–70% higher than the most advanced tumor treating field technology. In addition, patient-personalized therapy strategies could be tuned from the MIBTS without increasing size or adding circuits on the integrated chip, ensuring the optimal therapeutic effect and avoid tumor resistance. These groundbreaking achievements of MIBTS offer new hope for controlling tumor recurrence and extending patient survival.

An electroactive scaffold integrated with noninvasive in vivo electrical-stimulation (ES) capability shows great promise in the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues. Developing high-performance piezoelectric biomaterials which can simultaneously serve as both a biodegradable tissue scaffold and controllable electrical stimulator remains a great challenge. Herein, we constructed a biodegradable high-performance 3D piezoelectric scaffold with ultrasound (US)-driven wireless ES capability, and demonstrated its successful application for the repair of spinal cord injuries in a rat model. The 3D multichannel piezoelectric scaffold was prepared by electrospinning of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibers incorporated with biodegradable high-performance piezoelectric potassium sodium niobate (K0.5Na0.5NbO3, KNN) nanowires. With programmed US irradiation as a remote mechanical stimulus, the on-demand in vivo ES with an adjustable timeline, duration, and strength can be delivered by the 3D piezoelectric scaffold. Under proper US excitation, the 3D tissue scaffolds made of the piezoelectric composite nanofibers can accelerate the recovery of motor functions and enhance the repair of spinal cord injury. The immunohistofluorescence investigation indicated that the 3D piezoelectric scaffolds combined with the US-driven in vivo ES promoted neural stem cell differentiation and endogenous angiogenesis in the lesion. This work highlights the potential application of a biodegradable high-performance piezoelectric scaffold providing US-driven on-demand electrical cues for regenerative medicine.

Electroactive scaffolds with three-dimension (3D) hierarchical porous structure have demonstrated immense potential in tissue repair and regeneration by providing an electrical microenvironment at bone defect sites. Herein, we designed a biodegradable nanofiber-aerogel scaffold with hierarchical porous structure and rehabilitated electrical microenvironment for accelerated bone regeneration. Incorporating piezoelectrical ZnO/polyhydroxybutyrate nanofibers and chitosan into three-dimensional porous structure, the nanofiber-aerogel scaffold with extracellular matrix (ECM)-like structure effectively facilitated adhesion, migration and recruitment of stem cells, which also rehabilitated electric microenvironment for accelerating osteogenic differentiation under controllable ultrasonic (US) stimulation. A series of biological experiments in vitro and in vivo had been performed to verify osteogenic performance of nanofiber-aerogel scaffolds. This work highlights the potential application of nanofiber-aerogel scaffold processing ECM-like structure and rehabilitating electrical microenvironment in the therapy of bone defects.
