The disposal of waste oil, paint and coating barrels (WOPCBs) after use is an ongoing social and environmental problem. In this paper, a novel technological scheme using steel converter co-processing is proposed for the safe disposal and resource utilization of WOPCBs. The scheme is mainly composed of WOPCBs pretreatment and converter disposal, focusing on the impact of converter co-processing WOPCBs on the environment and production process. Compared to the traditional technology, the scheme presented takes full advantages of the production process and environmental protection facilities of steel converter, and has many advantages, such as a large disposal capacity, low cost, highly efficient and environmentally friendly. The industrial trials results show that after adding 180–540 kg WOPCBs to each furnace load (nominal capacity 250 t), the converter operation is safe and controllable, and all the pollutant emission indicators generated in the process meet the Chinese national standards. In addition, WOPCBs are suitable to be used as a supplementary material for scrap steel. Therefore, this study provides important insights for sustainable resource utilization from WOPCBs.

CO 2 may erode cement structure of geological disposal repository in the long-term disposal process. This study investigates the adsorption behavior and mechanism of carbonated cement for Co 2+ via characterization and adsorption experiments. Characterization experiments show that the carbonation does not change the adsorption mechanism of cement for Co 2+ . Adsorption experiments show that carbonation reduces the adsorption capacity of cement. In general, the adsorption of Co 2+ by both pristine and carbonated cement involves multiple mechanisms including ion exchange and chemical adsorption. This study provides critical data for safety assessments of the geological disposal repository.

Background Deciphering the in vivo processes of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is crucial for identifying new pharmacodynamic substances and new drugs. Due to the complexity and diversity of components, investigating the exposure, metabolism, and disposition remains a major challenge in TCM research. In recent years, a number of non-targeted smart mass-spectrometry (MS) techniques, such as precise-and-thorough background-subtraction (PATBS) and metabolomics, have realized the intelligent identification of in vivo components of TCM. However, the metabolites characterization still largely relies on manual identification in combination with online databases. Results We developed a scoring approach based on the structural similarity and minimal mass defect variations between metabolites and prototypes. The current method integrates three dimensions of mass spectral data including m/z , mass defect of MS1 and MS2, and the similarity of MS2 fragments, which was sequentially analyzed by a R-based mass dataset relevance bridging (MDRB) data post-processing technique. The MDRB technology constructed a component relationship network for TCM, significantly improving metabolite identification efficiency and facilitating the mapping of translational metabolic pathways. By combining MDRB with PATBS through this non-targeted identification technology, we developed a comprehensive strategy for identification, characterization and bridging analysis of TCM metabolite in vivo. As a proof of concept, we adopted the proposed strategy to investigate the process of exposure, metabolism, and disposition of Semen Armeniacae Amarum (CKXR) in mice. Significance The currently proposed analytical approach is universally applicable and demonstrates its effectiveness in analyzing complex components of TCMs in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, it enables the correlation of in vitro and in vivo data, providing insights into the metabolic transformations among components sharing the same parent nucleus structure. Finally, the developed MDRB platform is publicly available for ( https://github.com/933ZhangDD/MDRB ) for accelerating TCM research for the scientific community. Graphical

The distribution coefficient ( K d ) of radionuclides is a crucial parameter in assessing the safety of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) geological repository. It is determined in the laboratory through batch and column experiments. However, differences in obtained K d values from distinct experiments have not been thoroughly assessed and compared. This study evaluated strontium (Sr) sorption on different granite materials using static batch and dynamic experiments (column and core-flooding experiments). The results from batch sorption experiments showed higher Sr sorption on granite under acidic and strongly alkaline conditions, low solid–liquid ratios, and low ionic strength. In column experiments, a two-site sorption model was used to simulate Sr transport in crushed granite and mixed pure minerals. The sorption of Sr on crushed granite exhibited a higher affinity than that of mixed pure minerals. The dual-porosity transport model was employed to investigate Sr transport behavior in fractured granite in the core-flooding experiment. K d obtained from batch sorption experiments are four to twenty times higher than those from column experiments, and two to three orders of magnitude higher than that from a core-flooding experiment. The results of this study provide valuable insights into safety assessment for the HLW geological repository.
