Adsorptive removal of cationic methylene blue dye using carboxymethyl cellulose/k-carrageenan/activated montmorillonite composite beads: Isotherm and kinetic studies

Chao Liu,A.M. Omer,Xiao-kun Ouyang

In the present study, new composite beads based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/k-carrageenan (kC)/activated montmorillonite (AMMT) were prepared for adsorptive removal of cationic methylene blue (MB) as a dye model. The structure and morphology of the composite beads were investigated by FT-IR and SEM, while the thermal properties were tested using TGA. Factors affecting the removal percent of MB such as CMC/kC/AMMT ratios, initial MB concentration, pH medium, adsorbent dosage, solution temperature, and agitation speed were also explored. Results demonstrated that MB removal (%) exceeded 92% after 120 min using CMC/kC/AMMT (1:1:0.4 ratio) compared to 69% in case of free AMMT beads. Moreover, data obtained from isotherm studies were fitted well to Langmuir model (R 2   =   0.999), and the kinetics of adsorption followed pseudo-second order model. Finally, the composite beads showed good reusability for MB dye removal with high efficiency. Results obtained from this study suggest that the prepared composite beads could be applied effectively for removing cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Insight and mechanisms of tetracycline adsorption on sodium alginate/montmorillonite composite beads

Po-Hsiang Chang,Raj Mukhopadhyay,Binoy Sarkar,Yun-Cheng Mei,Chih-Hsun Hsu,Yu-Min Tzou

The presence of antibiotics in soil and water raises great health concerns because they may increase the development of harmful antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this study, composite beads prepared from 2:1 or 1:1 ratios of montmorillonite (Mt) and sodium alginate (SA) were used to adsorb tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), an antibiotic commonly found in aqueous systems. The equilibrium time for TC adsorption onto the Mt/SA was 8 h, and the kinetic data were consistent with the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherm was described with the Langmuir equation. The maximum amounts of TC adsorbed were 745, 689, and 445 mg g −1 for the 2:1- and 1:1-Mt/SA and the original Mt, respectively. The Mt/SA composite beads exhibited porous structures ; however, this did not play a key role in TC removal, as previously reported. Cation exchange was the major adsorption mechanism, and electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding between the SA and TC also contributed to TC adsorption on the Mt/SA composite beads. In addition, the migration of a small amount of TC into the inner spaces of the beads led to the intercalation of the TC in the Mt interlayers and enhanced TC adsorption by the Mt/SA composite beads.

Insights into the mechanism of separation of Co, Nd, and Dy by different crystal structures of zirconium phosphate in bead form

Zhongyan Luo,Jukka Kuva,Jan Luyten,Risto Koivula,Małgorzata Szlachta,Hongli Bao,Junhua Xu

The increasing demand for Co, Nd, and Dy, particularly in neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnets, has heightened concerns over their supply risks. Developing efficient, environmentally friendly methods to recover Co, Nd, and Dy from spent NdFeB magnets is therefore critical. This study presents the synthesis of two types of crystalline zirconium phosphate (ZrP) encapsulated in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite beads. The structure, morphology, and chemical properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray computed tomography (XCT), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The intercalation of dimethylformamide (DMF) enlarged the interlayer spacing of α-ZrP and γ-ZrP, thereby enhancing their ion exchange properties. Batch sorption experiments revealed that α-ZrP/PAN outperformed γ-ZrP/PAN in both sorption and separation efficiency. α-ZrP/PAN beads exhibited high selectivity for Nd 3 + and Dy 3 + , with minimal Co 2 + sorption (8.57 %). Stepwise elution studies on α-ZrP/PAN demonstrated the obtained metal purities to be ∼100 wt% for Co, 64.1 wt% for Nd, and 96.5 wt% for Dy. Sorbent regeneration was investigated over ten sorption–desorption cycles, which revealed that α-ZrP/PAN retained 72.72 % of its sorption capacity, demonstrating excellent reusability and stability, while γ-ZrP/PAN’s capacity declined to 68.95 % after five cycles. The ion-exchange reaction accompanied by shrinking of the interlayer space was illustrated by combining the batch sorption experiments, column operations, and analyses from XRD, FT-IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Overall, α-ZrP/PAN shows promise for Co, Nd, and Dy separation from NdFeB magnets, although further optimization of sorbents and elution agents is necessary.

Preparation of Activated Carbon-Reinforced Composite Beads Based on MnO2/MCM-41@Fe3O4 and Calcium Alginate for Efficient Removal of Tetracycline in Aqueous Solutions

Zhigong Zheng,Ronghui Shi,Xiaoping Zhang,Yonghao Ni,Hui Zhang

Tetracycline (TC) is a common antibiotic; when untreated TC enters the environment, it will cause a negative impact on the human body through the food chain. In the present study, MnO2/MCM-41@Fe3O4(FeMnMCM) prepared using a hydrothermal and redox method andCamellia oleiferashell-activated carbon (COFAC) prepared through alkali activation were encapsulated using alginate (ALG) and calcium chloride as a cross-linking matrix to give the composite beads COFAC–FeMnMCM–ALG. The resultant COFAC–FeMnMCM–ALG composite beads were then carefully characterized, showing a high immobilization of MnO2/MCM-41@Fe3O4, with porous COFAC as an effective bioadsorbent for enriching the pollutants in the treated samples. These bead catalysts were subsequently applied to the oxidative degradation of TC in a Fenton oxidation system. Several parameters affecting the degradation were investigated, including the H2O2concentration, catalyst dosage, initial TC concentration, and temperature. A very high catalytic activity towards the degradation of TC was demonstrated. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching results showed that ·OH and ·O2−were generated in the system, with ·OH as the main radical species. In addition, the COFAC–FeMnMCM–ALG catalyst exhibited excellent recyclability/reusability. We conclude that the as-prepared COFAC–FeMnMCM–ALG composite beads, which integrate MnO2and Fe3O4with bioadsorbents, provide a new idea for the design of catalysts for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and have great potential in the Fenton oxidation system to degrade toxic pollutants.

Nanocellulose/Graphene Oxide Composite Beads as a Novel Hemoperfusion Adsorbent for Efficient Removal of Bilirubin Plasma

Xuanru Wei,Hengfeng Zhu,Dichan Hong,Xiangxian Li,Zhuqun Shi,Quanling Yang

Conventional hemoperfusion adsorbents suffer from inefficiency and poor biocompatibility. Cellulose, a natural polysaccharide with biocompatible, biodegradable, and nontoxic properties, was combined with graphene oxide (GO) to fabricate composite beads (TGO) for blood purification. GO synthesized via a modified Hummers method was complexed with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs). Increasing GO content (2–20 wt %) enhanced TGO’s specific surface area (256.4–289.0 m2 g–1) while retaining an ∼10 nm pore size. TGO demonstrated exceptional adsorption capacities: bilirubin (418.4 mg g–1), creatinine (23.5 mg g–1), uric acid (146.6 mg g–1), and Cu2+ (171.9 mg g–1). The beads exhibited excellent hemocompatibility (hemolysis rate <5%) and prolonged recalcification time (585 ± 5.2 s). Notably, TGO restored blood bilirubin levels to normal within 30 min, highlighting its potential for blood purification.

Efficient removal of noxious methylene dye by low-cost and reusable composite beads based on cellulose acetate/banana pseudo-stem fiber

Eze Esther,Omer Ahmed M.,Hassanin Ahmed H.,Eltaweil Abdelazeem S.,El-Khouly Mohamed E.

Abstract Converting agricultural waste into an effectual adsorbent material for removing organic pollutants without creating secondary pollution has received considerable attention. Herein, a green approach was employed to construct eco-friendly composite beads with ease-separation and reusability features for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye. The treated banana pseudo-stem fibers (BFs) were functionalized using iminodiacetic acid (IDA) and impregnated into cellulose acetate beads. The developed IDA-BFs@CA composite beads were analyzed by FTIR, TGA, SEM, XRD, UV-Vis, photoluminescence, BET, XPS, and zeta potential characterization tools. The composite beads demonstrated a porous structure; negatively charged surface (−27.4 mV) and acceptable surface area reached 38.29 m 2 /g with a pore volume of 0.097 cm 3 /g. In addition, the removal (%) was greatly improved and reached a maximal value of 85% using CA:IDA-BFs (1:3) blend ratio compared to 60% using CA:IDA-BFs (1:3) ratio. The isotherms study pointed out that the adsorption of MB dye unveiled a favorable correlation with the Langmuir model ( R 2 = 0.987) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 124.3 mg/g at 25 °C, while adsorption data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamically, the adsorption process was endothermic, random, and spontaneous. The removal mechanism involves both physical and chemical adsorption such as electrostatic interactions, H-bonding, and pore filling. Besides, the reusability study implied that the developed beads reserved admirable adsorption properties with a maximal removal efficiency exceeding 79% after six sequential cycles, emphasizing its potential for removing cationic dye from industrial wastewater bodies. Fabrication of novel bio-adsorbent and its application for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution

Zhao Dianjia,Ye Wenkang,Cui Wenxuan

As eco-friendly adsorption material, hydroxyapatite (Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, HA) has been extensively applied to the removal of heavy metal ions. However, separating and recovering of HA powder after the adsorption process limits their application. Alginate-based composite beads (HCA) encapsulated with HA and cellulose were designed to remove Cu(II) from aqueous solution. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for characteristic analysis. An extensive discussion in terms of HCA adsorption capacity, effect of various Cu(II) concentration, and analysis of the involved mechanisms of Cu(II) removal on the biosorption. HCA beads showed that the maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) of 64.14 mg/g at pH = 5 with 8 h contact time. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm and second-order kinetic model gave the closest fit. HCA beads display good regeneration ability after four cycles and offer potentiality for practical application.

SiO2-Coated Fe3O4 Nanoparticle/Polyacrylonitrile Beads for One-Step Lipase Immobilization

Jiawei Lu,Youran Li,Huilin Zhu,Guiyang Shi

Nanoscale particle-based enzyme immobilization carries a risk of dissolving or breaking the material when applied. One effective strategy to improve the stability and functionality of this type of nanomaterial is compounding with polymers. In this study, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized and coated with SiO2, after which magnetic hollow composite beads with nanoscale porous structures, named, lipase/Fe3O4/PAN (L/FP), were fabricated by compounding polyacrylonitrile and SiO2-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles to immobilize Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) in one step. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method, vibrating sample magnetometer measurements, and thermogravimetry analysis were used to analyze the structure of hollow beads. It was found that composite beads retained nanoscale channels and had a larger specific surface area (27.2 m2/g), a higher pore volume (0.09 cm3/g), and better saturation magnetization values (9.8 emu/g) than PAN hollow beads (6.2 m2/g, 0.03 cm3/g, and 0 emu/g, respectively). After optimizing fabrication and immobilization conditions, L/FP showed a high lipase capacity (50 mg protein/g support) at 2 mg/mL lipase, and the immobilized yield was up to 98.4% when the mass ratio of the starting lipase and support was 1.3 (mg lipase/g support). The immobilized lipase in L/FP showed greater thermal stability and resistance to alkali than free CALB. L/FP also had good stability in most organic solvents. In all tested cycles, it also had better reusability (78.4, 47.2, and 23.8% retained activity after 10, 20, and 30 cycles, respectively) in ester hydrolysis than CALB-immobilized Fe3O4 nanoparticles or PAN beads and had higher activity than the commercial immobilized lipase (Novo 435).

Enhanced removal of bisphenol A from aqueous solution by aluminum-based MOF/sodium alginate-chitosan composite beads

Zifen Luo,Hongyi Chen,Shichuan Wu,Cao Yang,Jianhua Cheng

Aluminum-based metal-organic framework/sodium alginate-chitosan (Al-MOF/SA-CS) composite beads were synthesized and employed as an adsorbent for the removal of bisphenol A (BPA). Several methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were used to characterize the prepared adsorbents. Results demonstrated that the introduction of CS could change the porosity of the beads and the obtained Al-MOF/SA-CS composite beads possessed higher surface area and total pore volume comparing with the beads without CS. Batch experiments were carried out to explore the adsorption performance and the results displayed that the enhanced adsorption capacity was achieved by Al-MOF/SA-CS beads compared to the Al-MOF/SA ones. It is also found from the fitting results that the adsorption process fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and followed the Freundlich isotherm model. Importantly, the composite beads could be easily recycled and regenerated by methanol and the adsorption efficiency still maintained as high as 96% even after five cycles. Furthermore, it can be inferred from the experimental results that the π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding and cation-π interaction could be the primary adsorption mechanisms. Considering the high adsorption properties, good water stability, especially easy separation, and excellent recyclability , Al-MOF/SA-CS composite beads could be a promising adsorbent for the removal of BPA from contaminated water .

New insight into adsorption and co-adsorption of chlortetracycline hydrochloride and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride by Ga-based metal-organic gel/sodium alginate composite beads

Junhong Gu,Zhi Liu,Aiyuan Jia,Yiqi Wang,Ningning Li,Zhisheng Liu,Yangxue Li,Hongxing Zhang

Due to the extensive usage of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones for disease control, their residuals usually coexist in wastewater and seriously affect human health and the entire ecosystem. To mitigate this problem, developing efficient and recyclable absorbent has been urgently required to be put on the agenda. In this research, Ga-based MOGs (GMOGs) were synthesized to remove chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) in aqueous solution, followed by incorporating GMOGs into low-cost sodium alginate (SA) matrix to gain GMOG/SA beads with enhanced adsorption property, fine recycling performance and stable reusability. In single system (S-system), the adsorption behaviors of CTC/CIP by GMOGs and GMOG/SA beads including key operating factors, kinetics, isotherms and practicability were investigated systematically, and the maximum adsorption capacities for CTC/CIP by GMOGs and GMOG/SA beads achieved 406.50/158.23 mg g −1 and 1085.19/862.07 mg g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the proposed adsorption mechanisms were discussed. In binary system (B-system), regardless of suppressed co-adsorption behaviors of CTC/CIP by GMOGs and GMOG/SA beads arising from the competitive effect between CTC and CIP, their adsorption capacities still reached 207.90/126.90 mg g −1 and 588.24/571.42 mg g −1 , respectively. Moreover, the value of industrial application was evaluated by testing the adsorption performance of GMOG/SA beads in bead columns and real water. This work provides a potential practicable, effective and recycled exploration of GMOG/SA beads for remediating the CTC and CIP co-contaminated wastewater.

Functionalized graphene oxide/sodium alginate beads with ion responsiveness for uranium trapping

Yu Nan,Jianli Wang,Xue Chang,Kejin Shao,Yuchen Lin,Lijuan Qian,Zhan Li,Peizhuo Hu

Uranium as a strategic and non-renewable resource has been paid close attention to its efficient recovery and reuse from uranium-containing wastewater. Here, a composite bead was prepared by functionalized graphene oxide and sodium alginate (L-Lys-GO/SA) with ion-stimuli responsiveness for achieving U(VI) adsorption. The L-Lys-GO/SA-60 composite beads can selectively adsorb U(VI) with the maximum adsorption capacity (q max ) of 704.22 mg/g. Interestingly, the composite beads will swell under the stimulation of ions, which is more conducive to rapid solid-liquid separation and U(VI) recovery at low energy consumption. More importantly, the composite beads also exhibit high reusability of U(VI) adsorption with excellent life span of 80.11 % adsorption rate after 9 cycles, meaning that the composite beads and technology may be used in extraction and production for U(VI) from uranium-containing wastewater.

Preparation of metal-organic framework composite beads for selective adsorption and separation of palladium: Properties, mechanism and practical application

Jian Feng,Meng Xie,Derong Xu,Zhenzhen Tang,Chunlin He,Shunyan Ning,Min Li,Guoyuan Yuan,Songshan Jiang

Separation and recovery of palladium from industrial waste is an environmental way to utilize the valuable secondary resources. Metal-organic framework (MOF) has a great potential for the adsorption of Pd(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions, but the tiny powder form of MOF restricts its practical applications. In this work, a feasible and green method is developed to prepare novel MOF composite beads (B-MOF) with a stable cross-linked network. The adsorption performance of B-MOF for Pd(Ⅱ) was evaluated in acidic solutions. Comprehensive characterization results show that the structure of B-MOF is stable throughout the adsorption process. At pH 3.0, the adsorption capacity of Pd(Ⅱ) on B-MOF was high up to 334.68 mg.g −1 , exhibiting superiority to most of the other congeneric adsorbents. The adsorption behavior accorded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, which was a spontaneous and endothermic chemisorption process. Moreover, the adsorption performance of B-MOF persisted almost unchanged even after 12 regeneration cycles. B-MOF also demonstrated high selectivity to Pd(Ⅱ) in the presence of interfering ions, including Na(Ⅰ), K(Ⅰ), Ni(Ⅱ), Mg(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), Zn(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), Ca(Ⅱ) and Al(III). Mechanism studies reveal that Pd(Ⅱ) can be adsorbed on B-MOF by the inner-sphere complexation to Zr-nodes and the electrostatic attraction with protonated amine groups. The recovery of Pd from a real industrial waste was successfully achieved with a recovery rate of 92.5 %. This study provides an effective method to improve the practicability of MOF-based materials and may open a new way for the disposal of industrial waste containing palladium.
